Thanks for the FOD times Shades.  100MC sheet updated :)

Ian, congrats on the 5K PB - that's a great time!  As you say, hopefully you can get some training in once you're off work for a few days.

I went out this morning with the intention of doing 3 or 4 miles as my hip felt okay when I woke up, but after about 0.5 miles I just felt it was right to stop and turn around.  The hip was kind of okay (i.e., 2/10 in terms of pain) but all across my lower back felt stiff/sore.  Frustrating but I just felt that there was no point pushing it at this stage, so need another rest day at least.

No running yesterday, but I did sort out my travel to York.  I've decided to train it rather than drive as it's 5hrs drive, presuming everything goes well.  It's 5.5hrs on the train, with no changes, direct from Newton Abbot to York, so more relaxing on the train I think.  It's really frustrating as if I'd booked direct on National Rail it would have been £156 return, which is crazy for an off peak ticket, and it's that price that was making me consider driving.  However, I used one of the "ticket splitter" sites and got it for £101.83 for the same train!!  OK, I have a bunch of tickets for the one journey, but I've read the Ts & Cs carefully and as long as I produce the correct ticket when asked for, there's no issue, and it's reserved me the same seat for the whole journey.  It's still a lot of money and probably more expensive than diesel (I'm travelling on my own), but more relaxing for that length of journey.  I've got what looks like a nice AirBNB there, and there's a parkrun nearby, so I am very much looking forward to that weekend.  Claire and I went to York a couple of times, and it's a great city.  It's not until October though, but it is one of the main events I'm looking forward to for the rest of the year.

I also finished the Ron Hill books yesterday.   I really enjoyed them, but again a couple of things stood out to me.  In the later part of his career his focus was very much more on the business side of things I think, and I just feel that he believes he didn't achieve what he could/should have done in his running.  Shame as he was obviously a fantastic runner (massive understatement!), but the second part of the second book he just didn't seem at all happy with his running.

Shades-she's doing ok now, managing to run again and just being careful but hopefully looking good again for our half in September.
Big G-I often do that,it's ridiculous the money ive saved,as you say theres no issues and the inspectors always know about it.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - let's hope another's day of rest sorts you out.   Maybe the stiff/soreness in your lower back is due to you not being able to do much this week.

It's the drive to York that's so far put me off doing the Yorkshire marathon but it's definitely on my 'to do' list so I plan to do it.   I'm not keen on the train and I'd want the car so I can stay out of the city as York is very expensive especially on marathon weekend.   At least you could save yourself £50 on the fare by splitting the ticket.

I thought you'd enjoy the Ron Hill books.   Of course these days he would have had lottery funding and sponsorship and wouldn't have had to worry about supporting his family with such a demanding business.

Incidentally on the news today as the result of yet another survey about the benefits of exercise on mental health, they are saying that exercising more than 90 minutes a day has a detrimental affect on mental health.   So I decided to read the report more fully and in their classification of 'exercise'  they've included housework.   Of course if you did hours of housework every day you'd be more likely to be depressed. :D

Shades, not the same thing at all, but since I've not been drinking I've been keeping a keen eye on the news about the supposed benefits of drinking.  One headline from a broadsheet last week read: "Not drinking alcohol in middle age increases dementia risk, says report".

When I read the whole article (not just the headline), it concluded "However, the report's authors concluded that the underlying mechanisms leading to dementia for heavy drinkers and those abstaining were probably different. The study did not take into account the subjects' drinking habits before middle age."

So the headline and the actual content of the report were saying different things.

Also, the actual BmJ study (I found it and read it) talked about "polyphenolic compounds", which do appear in wine and may provide a benefit in helping with dementia.  However, these compounds have nothing specifically to do with alcohol and can be found elsewhere (a quick google of "polyphenol" throws up lots of sources of this compound), so red wine is not the only substance that this compound can be taken from.  But, a casual read of the news report and someone could presume that red wine is the main/only place to get this compound, which is not true.

I'm obviously not medically trained in any way but I find it amazing, only now not drinking, how many of these studies there are that promote the perceived advantages of drinking alcohol.  It seems it gets into the consciousness, and becomes fact.  But just picking under the surface of the news articles and the evidence falls apart (occasionally this research is actually financed by a drinks company too....)

The BBC did a balanced article on the study last week, but the image they used was of people enjoying themselves with glasses of wine in their hands.  Again, it kind of subconsciously promotes the fact that drinking is a "good thing" when their article concluded the opposite.

Big G - I read that last week too.   I remember my previous doctor saying that what increased the death rate of his patients was when the papers started saying that drinking a glass of wine a day was good for you.  Decades later those patients by drinking too much ending up with cancer/heart problems etc and years of ill health or early death.  They didn't read that it was one small glass, and the fashion then became for larger wine glasses and they were drinking half a bottle a day and one or 2 full bottles a day at weekends.

The compounds that are good for you in red wine are too small a quantity in most wines to have any effect anyway.

The press coverage of the survey last week also failed to mention that those with an increased dementia came from the group that developed strokes and heart disease.
  • Steven, I don't mind the rain either as less idiots about however I very rarely start a run if its pissing down.

Ian, well done on the 5k, looking forward to having a crack at my club's races next year

cal - hope the enforced rest will do you good

big g - annoys me that those train splitter sites work as it shouldn't have to any they should give the best price in the 1st place, if there are systems already in place for it. When I was going down to rece NDW they were wanting £30+ a trip usually, I would buy a travelcard and a single from zone 6 to where I was running usually total cost less than £15.

In future if you are travelling with someone else it is worth getting a two together rail card, £30 for the year and saves a 1/3 off the travel when you travel with them, so one trip costing £60 each you'd already be saving.

shades - 90 mins house work!!!! I tell the OH that I'm doing housework reality 5 mins housework 85 mins playstation.

Final run before Saturdays 10k, 10x10sec hill sprints 90 secs recovery.  Legs feel nice and heavy so will enjoy the rest day tomorrow.  Aim is sub 45 mins but have no idea if I've got the speed at the moment.

  • Ian- great time for your 5k and well done on your pb.
Shades- thankfully I've not been needed to work at the European Championships just used to take up the slack for the guys that do.

No running today went for a game of golf instead. I joined my local golf club about a month ago and am using it as another form of exercise.

Robert - good luck for your 10k, I'm sure you'll make your target time especially as the weather has cooled a little.

Are you still on the healthy eating with your OH?

steven - not sure how much exercise there is in golf, ;)  but a good way to wind down from work and be out in the fresh air.

Rest day for me today, have to pack and off to the airport as flying to the IOM later.    This is the one journey of the year that I dread, only 80 odd miles to the airport but a few years ago this was the trip when I came the closest to missing a flight.  Due to delays on the M5 and despite having allowed a lot of extra time for the trip I only got to the airport 20 minutes before the flight left, I abandoned my car in the airport car park ran into the airport and amazingly they let me on the flight, was a bit stressful. :'(

Shades/Steven, if I was playing golf I’d probably get quite a lot of exercise. I’d be walking 3x further than the other golfers and taking 4x as many swings....  Good for the core too, as I’d be spending a lot of time hacking about in the rough, finding the ball.

Have a safe - and stress free - flight today Shades.

I’m going to try a short run a bit later, so hopefully that’ll go ok.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - that's a good point about the golf, I'd be out there all day looking for the ball...no hand/eye co-ordination :D   So would be an ultra for me

Hope you have a pain free run.

Am so looking forward to cooler temperatures this weekend for running, supposed to be about 17 and maybe some rain.   Unfortunately humidity is going to be in the high 90's for the whole race (unusual for the IOM) but I don't mind, I'm just going to be grateful not to be in blistering hot sun as I've had my last couple of races.

I have a friend doing the 10 in 10 in Italy, been over 30 every day so far, hottest they've had is 37, but she's surviving OK.  I think AH is doing the same event.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, I saw something about AH doing that 10-in-10.  I think last year he averaged just over 2:45 for the 10, and at the start of it he was hoping for better this year.  Last time I checked he was about 20mins slower up to about day 5, and had worked out he needed to do 2:41s for the rest of the events to break his record, which he acknowledged would take take some doing!

Some friends are over from Alaska who I haven't seen for a while.  Last time they were here was 2yrs ago, but I was in Vietnam then so it's been about 4yrs since I've seen them, although we chat fairly often.  A few of us met up last night, and it was nice to catch up with them all.  Although I don't seem him often, he's a good friend but quite unusual in terms of being a bit of a "mad professor" and she's a wild American originally from LA.  They've been together years and are very happy together but I'm not really sure how their paths ever crossed!  They often look at each other and laugh as they have different opinions on things but it obviously works!

He's well into drones now, for work - he studies volcanos, and is an expert in the field he works in, although I guess it's a fairly limited/specialist field!  I'm fairly techy (or geeky, if you like!), but he lost me within about 3-milliseconds of explaining what his current project was.
  • Have friends who do 4 rounds of golf challenges for charity, as i dont play golf due to my ability to hit the ball in the right direction, long enough or actually hit the ball at all.  I've always wondered if it is an strenuous as they make it out to be.

Shades, still clean eating although lost 8 lbs in 2 weeks, OH has lost the same weight and was slimmer of the week last week.  She celebrates her 40th birthday in 2 weeks so will be over indulging then i'm sure.  Enjoy IOM, hope you dont experience troubles on the journey.

Big G hope you have a niggle free run, is this the make and break for Sailsbury? Your friend will have lost me a Volcano!

rest day as planned, tomorrow looks okay for the 10k 16-17 degrees and sunny, be a nice run hopefully.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - I'm sure that 10 in 10 is organised by an Italian that spends a lot of time in Ireland.  I've met him a few times and he's invited me over to do the 10 in 10 there but I've declined, looks a beautiful part of the country.   AH might get back on track as the temp was down to 33 yesterday  B)

I'm not surprised you don't see your friends very often if they live in Alaska!  I remember you mentioning the volcanos before.  Drones must the best invention ever for those studying volcanos.

Robert - well done to you and your OH, that's a significant weight loss.

I'm all packed now so will sign off.  Will check in over the weekend if hotel wi-fi is OK.

Good luck to all racing this weekend.

The run went well.  Just 4-miles at an easy pace, and it was nice to be out.  Right hip felt okay, but a very slight niggle in the left hip, strangely, but I think/hope that's nothing to worry about.  I felt quite sluggish, but again nothing to worry about - I haven't ran for 4 days, so that's probably the reason for that.

Robert, I reckon it's 60/40 in favour of me doing the event on Sunday.  I'll do a parkrun tomorrow and see how it is after that and then decide.  I was hoping to do a local 5-mile trail race tonight, but I won't do that in case it aggravates the hip again - it's a shame as it's a great event but the marathons are my priority really.  If I do the event on Sunday, I won't be racing it anyway and I'll just treat it as a day out....well, hopefully not a whole day out, but you get my meaning :)

Shades, in the past, they have invited me over to Alaska but it's really expensive to get there.  I.E., £1500 return.  Last night they did mention about an Alaskan trail marathon they know of, and of course my ears pricked up at that.  I suppose never-say-never, but I can't justify those flight prices (even though they'd put me up free of charge) so it's not remotely on my list at all.  And away, Alaska is bloomin' freezing most of the time!  It's odd as the flight times are more or less the same as getting to Vietnam, but if you're flexible you can get to Vietnam for around £500 return, plus it's really cheap once there.  I think to get to Alaska it's 2 different flights/carriers though which probably adds to the cost.

Rob-Brilliant weight loss, well done to you and Elle.
Shades-Good luck in IOM, have a great weekend and race.
Big G-Id guess there's a lot more competition heading towards Vietnam to help keep prices competitive.
Away myself this weekend in Northern Ireland for my cousins wedding, but looks like I can get some runs in.
10 miles today, very rainy afternoon and I got caught in the worse of it,luckily I got my new coat and it kept the rain off very well.
  • thank you vinson700 for that insight!

shades/ian, the weight loss has bought me to last years weight so happy with that, if I can lose another 3-4 lbs then i'll be the lightest for 3 years (12st 7lb).  Elle has about 4 stone to lose compared to my 1 and a bit but a great start and feeling confident continuing.

Big G glad run went well, sensible not to race a 5 miler this evening.

Still looking at next years races and am considering a back to back ultra nothing too serious in July either 50k/ 34 mile on the Saturday and 50km on the sunday.  Just waiting for the FVC to announce their date for the race and will double it with either XNRG 50km in Chiltern area or Essex 30 which is a 34 mile lapped race.

  • Shades- in regards golf, as I'm not very good at golf I find I actually walk about 5 miles in total per round at the same time carrying my clubs I certainly feel like I've had a workout by the time I finish.
  • Think i’ll Stick to crazy golf myself Steven.

woke up with that feeling ‘oh f*ck, why have I entered a 10k?’ Wanted to stay in bed and I won’t have lost anything as won the place in a raffle.  But made it on the train, must be serious as I’m going to be 90 mins early so I can warm up properly!

Cal all see you there, I’m in a grey and white stripy top.

just keep on remembering I actually enjoyed my last 10k 6 months ago a feeling I hadn’t experienced for 8 years
  • See you there! I'm in my Chasers vest and red calf sleeves.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Rob/Cal-Good luck today guys,at least the weather is a lot better for racing now.
  • Good luck to those racing this weekend.

hyde park 10k was pretty reasonable a few seconds inside my sub 45 target fairly well paced but still had plenty in the tank but think need to be racing these distances more often to know my limits.
    Splits were
    6.56
    6.56
    7.04
7.33 (knocked a few water bottles over so picked em up)
    7.21
    7.22
    7.26 (final 0.2)

maybe considering another 10 late September before my target half or in November.

pleasure to meet cal after the run! Enjoy tomorrow’s 5k
  • My race went rather like Robert's, except not as fast. Conditions were pretty much perfect (sunny but not too warm, with a nice cool breeze) so I decided to give it my best shot. Went for it from the start but slowed with each mile, then had a tough mile 4 where I felt tired and a bit sick as the rice cakes I ate two hours prior came back to haunt me. I rallied a bit after that but I just missed my PB by 10 seconds. Splits were:
    8:05
    8:12
    8:19
    8:41
    8:30
    8:22
(8:39 - worth noting that this last bit has a nasty little climb, which is why my and Robert's times seem a bit slow for a finishing stretch).
Anyway, I got an official time of 51:49 so I'm pleased to be under 52 again. (I also suspect Clapham was a bit short - Garmin seemed to think so but I can't always trust what it says). Finished 4th in age group by gun time (5th by chip time) and 40th lady.
I was quite impressed Robert was on the first page of the results - he was 33rd. I'm just happy when I finish in the first half, which I did today (124 of 346).
Robert found me afterwards and we had an ice cream and a sit down.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Well done Cal and Robert. Sounds like you had a good race and it’s great that a couple of Shadies could meet up.  :)

I did parkrun yesterday and had a really enjoyable run, with no niggles so I was happy with that. I started off steady and it ended up being a progressive run, plus an easy 1.5 miles there and back. I felt quite strong and positive at that point.

However, in the afternoon I started feeling quite a sharp pain around my right hammie and inside of my leg - again painful to walk, so at that point I was getting concerned about today’s race. I did all the prep presuming I’d run and got up on time today, but it’s no good so I’m a DNS. It’s the same side as the hip niggle so I don’t know if it’s all related, or just a totally separate issue.

I know I said a couple of weeks ago that I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do this race anyway, but having to DNS due to injury feels different and it’s annoyed me!  I haven’t had the best week from a running perspective and I wonder if it’s all due to that trail race I did.  Very frustrating.

My next marathon is in two weeks so hopefully I’ll be fine before then. No running at all today though as like I say it hurts to walk.
  • Oh no, Big G, what a rubbish end to the week. Are you going to see a physio?

Part two of my race double today - Wimbledon 5K Dash. This was a cheapie race - no medals and, when I arrived, not even chip timing. It was timed like parkrun, so in all honesty I might've saved myself £10 and just done a parkrun, but it was part of the Surrey Road League which Chasers are a part of, which is why I signed up. As it was, only four other Chasers were there, which is a rather disappointing turn out compared to the other clubs who went.
I was warned there was a big hill in the middle, so it wasn't going to be a fast race for me either (especially not coming the day after a 10K).
Due to the hills I didn't risk wearing the Zoom Flys and stuck with my old Frees, and it felt odd to run fast in them. The Flys give me a little boost when I run, whereas I get nothing from the Frees, and this pair has over 400 miles on them including two marathons.
The race started on a track before venturing out into the park, then up on to the road, past the All England Club and then on to the hill. Which was steep...really steep. I trudged up, passing three people (two of who had decided to walk it) which made me feel a little smug. But then, after a short flat bit, came the down hill. Boy I was glad I didn't go with the Flys. I could barely run down it in my Frees. The same three people came right back past me again. I would make a really shit fell runner.
I got past them again as the ground levelled out and we came back into the park for the last bit, then back on to the track for the final stretch. Garmin says I ran it in 26:16 so a minute off my best, but not that bad considering the hill. Splits were 8:12/8:55/8:09 (plus the last .1 at 7:43 pace).
I guess there will be a wait for the official results seeing as they did it manually. I know I was the slowest of the five Chasers, probably by a long way, but there were quite a few behind me so I'll be interested to see where I finish by age cat.

I'm debating whether to do a recovery run later today. I've only logged 23 miles this week, so I will see how I feel later.
  • Good luck on a speedy recovery big G hope it’s nohing too serious!  Sensible decision not to run and the feeling of frustration will go as you get to your next event.

cal well done for getting out for the 5k, I’m still suffering from yesterday!

made it out for a sore on quads 10 miles along the river and back.  Scrap anything I said about doing more 10ks I didn’t really push myself yesterday and my quads are still very sore!
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Robert, well done on the run out today.  Yeah, hopefully this niggle will go soon and I'll be fine for the next event.

Sounds a good race there, Cal, but as you say it does seem a bit odd paying for a non-chip timed 5k these days.  It is different running a proper race though, compared to a parkrun I think.  I'm similar to you in that I'm really crap on hills, but in my case I'm also crap at running up the blasted things ;)  There's a chap in my club and we're similar in all distances up to Half - but I've noticed that on a steep downhill he always passes me with ease, especially on off-road and even on an easy run.  He just seems to be quite relaxed where I know I'm quite tense. (my marathon PB is much better than his though, so I have that smug feeling too ;)).

I may see a physio, but I'll leave it a few days yet I think.  I just need to make sure I don't put weight on as I'm currently at 12st10 which I'm quite pleased with.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Cal/Rob-Sounds like you both had a good race yesterday so well done.
Cal-Well done on today's effort also.
Big G-Tough decision to DNS but definitely sounds like the right one.
Easy 6 miles with the wife yesterday morning and and a tough 5 ok my own today, ran up to Scrabo tower which,id imagine is decent DD training, starts of with a nice easy km to get to the bottom then just over a mile with 120ft of climb to get warmed up and a final road of just over half mile with 315ft of climb,By the far the hardest  climb I've ever done.
  • Sounds...lovely...Ian! :D
Robert - I was surprisingly tired after that 10K yesterday. Didn't make it to yoga afterwards, I just couldn't be arsed.
Official time for today was 26:15. Big whoop. Trouble with clubby races is I'm always well down the rankings, even by age group. Strong contrast with Runthroughs where I'm usually top 5 age group and sometimes top three (though they don't give prizes for that).
Very much doubt I'll do that race again. As a rule I like to get a medal for my trouble, and if there's no medal then there better be a good shot at a PB, which today's course wasn't. I won't say I didn't enjoy it, because it was an experience, but I gave up a long run for it and, with only five Chasers turning up, I can't say it was worth it.
  • Went out for 8 miles this morning. I was hoping for 10-12 but the old achilles got progressively worse so I canned the run early. I guess it objected to doing two fast runs in a row, one of which had a big frickin' hill in the middle.

In other news, I may have a part time job at the yoga studio. It's grunt work - working reception two mornings a week but a lot of the time it's rolling up yoga mats and cleaning. But it's a few minutes walk down the road and it'd give me a bit of extra cash, as my rental income doesn't really stretch far enough. I'm going to do a trial couple of days this week and see how it goes.
The only issue, really, is that it's Tuesday and Thursday (5:45 to 2:45 I think) which means I'd have to rearrage my run schedule, as currently I run Sat/Sun/Tue/Wed/Thu, so not sure how to go about it. I could continue to run on those days in the afternoon but it would mean axeing one Vinyasa and one Pilates class that I do on those two days. Or I do four days in a row (Fri- Mon) and then Wednesday, but then that's going to be tough for recovery. Hmm.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Ian, I just had a closer look at your hill run on Strava and it looks like you ran it really well.  I know in the Dolomites I did a 5k loop one day which had 700ft of ascent, and a mile of that was flat!  Bonkers!

Good news on the potential new job there Cal, and great it's so close to your house too.  It may take a bit of rearranging but I'm sure you'll figure it out.  It's good that it's over and done with by mid afternoon too.  Maybe move the (usual Sunday?) long run to Monday, and have Tuesday as an "active" rest day at work?

Yeah, similarly to you I think two quick sessions in a row do me no favours generally.  The mind thinks it can do it (and wants to do it!) but the body says otherwise, sadly.  On some bank holiday weekends, there are sometimes 3-4 short local races in a row (I think Easter weekend there are races Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon) and a few of my club do them all, but I've never managed it.  I could jog them, but I know in races where I say I'm going to use it as a steady run, I always end up going quicker than I wanted!  Even if I start right at the back, I seem to get into a bit of competition with myself about how many I can overtake.

No running here.  Pain is okay and I think I could actually run, but I need to be sensible and take another day off.  I've just been stretching and massaging it a lot, which appears to be helping.  We'll see in a day or two.
