I want the heatwave back TR!

A disappointing half for me yesterday, 8 seconds slower than my PB despite properly tapering for it (88/62/40 miles) - maybe I race better off high mileage? My PB at Retford was on the back of an 82 mile week. If I can sort arrangements I may have another crack at Wardi's Vale of York Half in four weeks.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Good work TR and 8 seconds isn't much at all LMH that is near as PB form. But if we didn't get disappointed if we didn't hit our goals we would never hit them.

Reasonably happy with 82.06 for 7th place in my squelchy trail half marathon. 14 seconds slower than 2017 but a slower course today due to flooding and mud. Ran on my own from 3 miles when the lead group got away. For the rest of the race overtook 2 and got overtook by 3 so not much happening and plenty of time to enjoy the views and run through the puddles. Sore knee and hip on the run so slower miles this week on softer surfaces.

Exactly OuchOuch. Glad you're reasonably happy with your result. I feel a bit better as the winner said that he was hoping to go faster but felt that the headwind in the first few miles was an issue. Sorry to hear that your hip and knee are sore, take it easy eh?

TR - 17M+13M, very nice. Hope it continues for the 1/2 next weekend.

LMH - 8s is nothing, conditions etc. can easily account for that. Keep trying and you'll probably find that when you do beat it, it's by a decent chunk.

OO - that sounds pretty quick for a muddy trail marathon, well done.

7M on Saturday morning for me - 2M with the dog, then down to the parkrun with mini-P and back again. Managed to set a buggy PB with 17:20 (although annoyingly my barcode didn't scan properly as I'm "unknown" in the results). I definitely feel that a sub-17 would be possible with a bit more training, right conditions, not too much traffic etc.

Then just 5M yesterday to watch a local 10k and cheer on some friends.

Very close to PB LMH -- at least you still have the expectation of hitting PBs, I'm younger than you I think but am already resigned to the inevitable (happy to be proved wrong if it happens though).
Well done too OO, that sounded pretty tough.

    Nice miles TR.

As is normal for me now I had Saturday off to have somewhat fresher legs for Sunday, which was a training marathon with hill reps in the first 10 miles, then 10km tempo (about 30s/mile slower than MP but at marathon HR, so that wasn't great), then easy. First speed of any sort I've attempted for weeks.

Thanks Padams. I don't like to make excuses. Frustrating about your bar code.

Older and faster Charlie - don't expect an inevitable decline, at least not at your young age!

LmH - course and conditions make a difference, you can go quicker yet.

OO - good time that for a trail race.

    Padams - top buggy bombing.

7m inc 30 min of 30sec/30sec, good 1/2 mara prep for sunday, and im on leave this week so won't be doing anything longer than that.

I have swapped my new forest place to the 1/2, so the fixture list is now IoW 1/2, NF 1/2, solent 1/2, Abo, gosport 1/2, Portsmouth coastal. Good job the physio got me moving again. It's a pug stylie race yourself fit attempt.......rofl, lol, PMSL  (etc in a pug stylie).

Downton 1/2 and Hayling 10 are possibles.

That's a lot of races TR! I've entered Vale of York half.

LMH - when is rhat? Is it a pb potential course? Might be worth doing a few sessions of 10min or 15min reps if a pb matters. A lot of my races are B races but will help get me fitter. IoW is hilly and a late start (to allow travel time) so is tough on a warm day, NF is trail/road so is a bit slower, but they will both be good workouts. Solent 1/2 4 weeks before abo will be a good pointer as whilst its not gosport fast its not a slow course.

TR.. it's 9th Sept, flat course on closed roads with one railway bridge.  BTW I like the Pug style racing return but will you be able to make it onto the Pugometer??

LMH.. good to hear you are heading up North.  My clubmate is usually 1.23 ish so I could persuade him to tow you round to a PB  ;) He ran 17.34 for 5k last night but isn't quite as good (relatively) at longer distances.  Bad luck with the close but no cigar effort BTW.

OO.. that's a very decent time for a muddy trail event, nice one!

I was away at a music festival in Oxfordshire at the weekend, my annual sabbatical from running.  3 days of bacon & sausage sarnies, Welsh Oggies, Burgers & doughnuts washed down with copious quantities of cider.  My weight hasn't budged though!

Straight back into it this week, I felt a bit off colour at last night's 5k in York but had a thankfully short lived tummy bug afterwards which perhaps explained why I was struggling.  The main race was won by Graham Rush in 14.35 & the first lesser spotted broke the course record with 16.24 so a decent quality field.

Thanks for the well dones, hopefully with the speed boost from those two HM races (always the best training) and a good few more weeks of training I will be in with a good shout of a sub 250 time at Berlin. But right hamstring giving me gip now, suppose I have overdone it a bit for a while now so will take it as easy as 65 to 70 mpw allows me too.

Sounds a great weekend away Wardi.
CW - always amazed / impressed how you regularly can casually you can knock out a training marathon without much negative training impact or fuss.
LMH - with the training boost from last Sundays fast half, we all look forward to a new PB on 9th September - no pressure!
TR - that run of races should get you in great shape for Abingdon.
FGFA accepted looks like a weekend in London next April.

An introduction and tow would be much appreciated if it can be arranged Wardi. As ever I am in awe of your eating/weight management abilities.

I'm hoping Sunday's race will have helped too OuchOuch. My left hamstring is still a little niggly post race so I'm managing that at the minute and just going for some steady miles.

More likely to break than get faster I'm afraid TR and it's always disappointing not to even be able to hit MP in training never mind HMP so I'll probably keep plodding. Are you injury/niggle/pain free now?

Wardi - same day as NF then. Your festival sounded good fun.

OO - how did you find consecutive 1/2s 1 week apart? Ok as the first  wasnt flat out?

Lmh - maybe try a mixd session like the BAC ones then, dont forget that the psces arnt actually that important, its about the effort levels. Im ok under current load, we'll see what a mostly road 1/2 does to me Sunday.

Wardi - I do that every weekend and run.  You need to sharpen up, big guy.

Not had anything from the organising committee in London Village as yet.  Beginning to think they saw my closing 10k from this year with Pretty Boy and decided I was one of them chancers that picked up someone's number off the floor.  Can't say I blame them.  Was very heartened to read this :

'Please be aware that it is each runner’s responsibility to make contact if they have not heard from us'

and realise that as ever the desire to help is as plentiful as the wriggle room at VLM Towers.  Basically if there's any clerical error, even if it's ours, then you need to take full responsibility for it.  Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I'm running with no structure or focus and that'll do me for now.

    As you were.

CRAB - there are a few (we’ll within the time limit) still waiting to hear by the looks. And I think I read someone got in who was only 5 seconds under the qualifying time (a Senior Man who ran 2’59’55). Maybe check your Spam folder too - the initial email from VLM re the first part of registration went in there for me. Although why I’m considering entering I don’t know. I may as well just chuck £40 in the bin!

    Check Spam folder.  Thanks Einstein.

    FFS!

(I don't have the heart to tell you I have a fckn IT Degree!)

Mind you if I flogged my knackers off to get considerably more off my GFA time than the 90seconds I already had and it turns out I didn't need to I'll be so happy!

    As you were.

The speed that the emails came out leads me to believe that carrier pigeons were involved in the process.  Perhaps VLM could consult with those nice folk who manage to send out thousands of emails out at once enticing us with Nigerian bank transfers, viagra, and bottles of the elixir of youth.

Does this mean you are running a bit again LS21?  Jolly good news if so. :)

Oh and as an aside - Shaun Ryder is currently sitting in my shop (with his dog, Malcolm!) drinking a glass of organic apple juice. And Jonathan Edwards cane in earlier and bought a pork pie. Strange day.

Shaun Ryder, organic apple juice, Jonathan Edwards a pork pie, whats the world coming to!  Diverse, whose next - Teresa May wanting a 6 pick of Special Brew.
TR - I ran both at the same effort, the first  was considerably hotter and if anything found the second, faster one easier, as mentally was used again to running at race pace..and the pain! I've done back to back halfs a few times, and find the second one is easier and generally faster.
2019 VLM - (feel slightly guilty now) but I am in - should I get there, only currently 4 marathons and 1 ultra between now and then.   Hopefully the time will come when I add CRAB's name to the VLM 2019 list before hastily taking it off before he throws a wobbly.  But hope your on there too LS21.
On a rest day off, hamstring niggle, that red injury line looks a bit close.

Crab - that's a brilliant get-out by VLM, nothing like taking no responsibility for anything at all. I'm sure you'll be fine, they're probably just struggling with the new system.

LMH - I know you like the high mileage/easy pace training approach, but as TR suggests, if you want to knock some time off your HM PB a few tempo-type runs would probably be beneficial. Your approach can work for marathons (as you've shown), but for shorter races I think you do need some slightly faster training mixed in with the easy stuff.

Wardi - I have no idea what Oggies are, but the rest of the weekend sounds great!

TR - I like the Pug approach, but you need to race at least 3 times a week to match Jooligan. Nice 30s/30s efforts by the way, I did some of those a few months ago and found it surprisingly hard.

I had a rest day on Monday, then track on Tuesday was a bit different as they were doing some "races" to see if people could get some PBs on shorter stuff. So 1500m in 4:23 (finished 2nd behind one of the juniors), which was pretty painful, then about 3 mins recovery before 5000m in 17:24 (started steady and picked it up in the 2nd half once my legs got going again). I was pipped on the line by a different junior, although I knew he was going to do it and didn't want to bury myself to try to hold him off.

Then 4M yesterday with the dog and mini-P, and 8M just now on my lunch break.

I got into VLM no problem.  Despite a 2:04 second half this year.  And that was with outside assistance.
They must have taken pity on me  :)

Have decided to run Boston two weeks before anyway.  I might actually be a bit better in monsoon conditions.

I'm thinking of Boston before London too Dan - only in my case the one in Lincolnshire again.

I do try to run a fast last mile quite often Padams, it's not quite all plodding, though more or less.

Padams - no racing round a park or track here, so jooligans frequency is safe.

OO - i was hoping for a performance lift from these regular races, so dounds good. Im ok with them being the best i can be on the day efforts, which means minimal taper and recovery.

LS21 - you're good.  Turns out between your ground breaking assistance and Shaun Ryder walking in, London Village got their act together and realised it was all Dan's fault and gave the email machine a swift kick.  I'm sure as a result of your intervention.  I believe the bunting has been out at the Red Lion this afternoon as a result.  Not sure if Shaun Ryder walked into my shop (if I had one) that I'd be on the interweb telling some people who pretend to like me for a couple of hours per year all about it.  I'd be asking the daft apeth why the fck they didn't play in Hamburg in March 1991 when I got a fckn train half way across the bastard country just so I could get on a 24hour ferry specifically to see said band. Making Deee Lite (feat, Bootsy Collins) extend their set, whilst appreciated and understandable in the circumstances, didn't really sweeten the pill all that much.  Sorry to hear your pelvic floor is still not water tight.

    As you were.
