Monday 15th October 2018 Now nothing's impossible I have found

Morning!

Lyrics: Now nothing's impossible I have found
For when my chin is on the ground...

An easy week for several on here, I hope! No doubt there will be aches and pains, and new plans to be made and it won't be long before it is time to start all over again.

What: hopefully around half an hour easy run and fitness suite later

Why: not working

Hope the weather continues to play ball, Chick!

Benjy: don't tell anyone but today's lyrics are older than I am!

Progress is rarely a straight line. There are always bumps in the road, but you can make the choice to keep looking ahead.

  • Ale: What 22 years? (I claim to be be 21 and quite a bit, then my daughters promptly correct me).
Dustin: That sounds like a cracking event, the kind I like. Too much of a voyage from the smoke, but the Ravenscar Half Marathon in May is like that, great fun. Looking forward to that one already.
Don: Same goes again, I imagine in your neck of the woods a 5 mile hilly is spectacular.
OH: Again, sounds spectacular, do you work part-time for the tourist board, sold it to me.
Chicksta: Well you have a good deal going on there with the heavens, being able to keep Summer going just a bit longer, enjoy.

What: 6 mile trot at lunchtime with Jeremy Vine
Why: 'Werkin at home, to get out, recovery run to get blood to muscles to fight off any potential doms that happen by second day
Lyrics: I know the song but the not the artist, fairly confident Ken Bruce would award me 1 point after an "Um... err... well... I can giiive yooou one point" comment.

Grim up North today. Perfect for running.

  • Morning.

Lovely weather to come home to - not.

Glad you enjoyed your marathon Benjy and emzap.

Sorry you didn't get the race you hoped for OH. Hope you have a safe and stress free journey home.

That sounds like a tough weekend Dustin.

    How is your achilles Alehouse?

    What:            short, wet and cold
    Why:             return to reality
    Last hard:     coming home
    Last rest:      14/10

    Lyrics - no.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Benjy, are you on Strava?  I have a couple of photos from yesterday's run on there.  I was on the west coast, running from Portavadie to Tighnabruaich.  Very scenic indeed!

    Morning again!

    What: 31:47 minutes off road

Why: keeping M73 friend company. A long time since I have run with him. Quite cool but dry: he wore hat and gloves and I didn't but for the first 10 minutes wished I had.

Benjy: hate to admit it but I'm 27. And re the lyrics, not sure that I would expect anyone to get the original artist, but there have been quite a few covers. In a fit of generosity I will give two points for the title.

LMH: Achilles twinging after today's run. Off to the fitness suite later to work on it...after finishing defrosting the freezer and Popmaster.

    Don: half term?

Hope you have a good journey, OH

    Morning
Sorry, Saturday's lyrics were No Milk Today by Herman's Hermits.

I am in so much pain today, standing up and sitting down are pretty horrific, so trying to stay either up or down for as long as possible.  It's my quads, they have completely gone!

So, here we go, Yorkshire Marathon 2018 report.

Got to York on Saturday with no problems, met my friend and then possibly did a bit too much walking around for a restful day (12 km) but wasn't too worried as knew it would help me sleep...hmm the races were also on in York.  Went to bed at about 9:30 fell fast asleep, as for once I wasn't too worried about this marathon (after Birmingham disaster last year, the pressure was off a bit).  12 o'clock the party revelers came back to the hotel and kept me awake (though dozing on and off) until 6 am, when I had to get up...great.  So about 3.5 hours of decent sleep and now to run a marathon...

Got to the event village with loads of time to spare, which I was pleased about.  It was raining which wasn't in the forecast, well it wasn't in the forecast so it would clear right?

Got to the start with less than a minute to spare due to the loo queues.  I'm pretty sure some people missed the start due to this.  Managed to get in the right wave, but behind the 4:30 pacer (I wanted to be around the 4 hours one) but it was fine, I would stick to my plan.  Steady 5:30-5:40 km for as long as possible, then see how I felt.

First 5 km went really well.  Sticking to pace, enjoying it, despite the rain and soaking in the atmosphere (no pun intended).  Went through 5 km in 27:42, pretty spot on.  10km 55:55, again pretty perfect.  Was starting to feel like I was going constantly uphill, but this was a flat race, so how can that be?  Well, then it turned out I had been going constantly uphill (having looked at the race profile after!).  Big hill at about 13 km, so I stopped and walked some of it.  I was feeling tired and decided it was sensible to take it easy and not push for the sub 4, if it was going to happen, it'd happen, if not, no problem.  At some point high-fived the high-fiving vicar, goal ticked.

Got to 15 km in about 1:27, still going well.  Was feeling ok now that I had the new relaxed strategy and pushed on.  At some point round here I started counting steps whenever it started to get hard, at 1000 I could walk for a minute.  However, at this point it started to feel a bit better and so I managed to run on.  Got to the first short out and back and saw that we were going downhill (was about 0.5 km) so decided to push on the down and take it easy with some walking on the up.  Sensible plan as this was the start of quite a long uphill.  Got to half way in about 2 hours.  Was feeling ok.  Thought I could still manage a sub 4:15 so pushed on.  Then got to the second out and back, this time 2 miles.  Out was 2 miles downhill, back was 2 miles uphill!  Walked for a bit on the uphill, and some nice person handed me a gel (I ended up taking 8 in total plus the isotonic drinks as they really helped boosting my energy).  From there it was about 6 miles back to the end, which I ran with intermittent walking breaks.  It was still quite undulating which just sapped all the energy from my legs.  By this point my quads had basically gone, so every step was turning into agony, but I was determined that I could beat my post-accident PB of 4:30.

Walked ran all the way to the 25 mile point and from there was determined to run to the end.  Ran all the way to the bottom of the big hill just below the university, where I just couldn't run up it.  I tried and my calves just gave up!  However at the top of the hill I had 400 m to go and was on 4:17:30, so I went for it!  Came in at 4:19:05 (so really did sprint!).  A post marathon PB of over 10 minutes so was incredibly happy with that.  Managed to change into some dry clothes (apparently my lips were blue!) and made it home.

Day off today to rest and sleep!

OH sorry to hear your race didn't go so well but well toughed out. Well done Benjy.  Must say, despite the weather it was a fantastic day out.  Well done Dustin too :)

    Have a lovely day all.

WOW emzap what a brilliant post! Well done, it sounds a pretty tough one!

  • Oh my giddy aunt I forgot to say:

Yesterday's lyrics were Shout To The Top by The Style Council

Emz: Great report and fantastic result beating PB by 10mins. Jubilent. You replayed the route perfectly in my mind/memory. Sorry to hear you got a disturbed night's sleep though.

Don: Thanks for the offer, but I don't have Strava, I don't have a smart phone, (considering my specialist subject area throughout my working life has been digital media it baffles friends as to why I have a 1990s phone).

OH: "Fit of generosity" that did make me chuckle.
