Anyone take multi-vitamins? Any recommendations?

What with all the training I find I pick up bugs more now, I'm doing the London Marathon also and all the running weakens my immune system, any tips, been told to take multi-vitamins, anyone recommend any good ones thanks, not really a big pill popper but willing to give it a try.

Thanks

Mark

  • Eat better. Vitamin pills are a massive con

  • Nope, my diet takes care of all my needs

Only worthwhile if you're a full-on vegan who is nut allergic, hates vegetables and is coeliac, i.e for the rest of us waste of money!

  • Any basic multi vit with do, but if your having issues with your immune system try maybe Echinecea and Vit C

    i use zip vit

  • I use Wellman vitamins, Mark. Reasonably priced and they contain everything I want them to.

  • This highlights a few issues to me - a healthy diet should give you all you need, but does it? Do we truly get all the promised benefits of 'fresh' fruit and veg after it has been transported in some cases thousands of miles before it ends up on our plates? Now I'm sure there are a few Good Life types amongst us but lets face it most of us buy from the major supermarkets and with the best intentions their food is hardly freshly harvested. So is frozen better? Or are supplements the way to go? Health benefits have been shown to be gained from adding vitamins to cereals and bread so to my mind a multivitamin has to be worth considering. As to being a waste of money, they hardly cost a fortune so why not? There must be plenty of other things that cost more that could be considered wasteful by some. It's personal preference.

  • Have a look at some of the costs of these multi-vitamins. Vita-biotics are making millions on these things. This is because they are a total rip off.

Then consider the huge amounts over your daily recommended dose that most of these things give you.

Take vitamin C. Your body doesn't hold on to excess vitamin C, it doesn't have a way to store it and it has no need for it, so what happens? You pass it, in fact if you have enough vitamin C you will most likely have diarrhoea as your body tries its best to excrete the unused vitamin.

Some of these tablets have figures like 4000% of your daily needs...

Finally try and look up some real science behind these supplements and you'll find that actually there is little to support their use on an every day basis.

My favourite con is with vitamin D. Anyone who is buying vitamin D (unless they have Ricketts) is wasting their money totally and you know why? Because spending 15 minutes or so in the sun during the summer months is enough for most people.

  • I do not want too be argumentative here medicalert but the flip side of your vitamin d comments what about a night shift worker.

A night shift worker who like me works permeant 10-6 its dark by the time i get up after been on nights and i am literally most morning just crawling into bed when the sun is rising.

My take on the vitamin sides of things yes take them, no do not take any that exceed the recommended daily allowance by 1000's of percent. I do take a vit d supplement due too being a permeant night shift worker and i take flaxseed oil which is brilliant for joints and selenium/glucosamine.

For the sake of ten-fifteen quid every other month it gives me piece of mind.

I have a toddler and when researching how varied after he needs to get all of the required nutrients, I was amazed at the advice.

It seems that some people only feed their kids sausages, Chips and beans, crisps and chocolate, yet those kids do not have any nutrient deficiencies. So I don't think that anyone who is eating a mixed diet would possibly have any need to worry about vitamin or minerals.

All of the tv shows that do tests say that the vitamins are a waste of money too, as we get all we need from food. So unless I develop a condition caused by a deficiency then I will pass on the pills. All supplement fads are industry driven and the studies that recommend them are paid for by industry. At least with fresh food, you know what you are looking at.

It all comes down to choice and disposable income.

get the cheap supermarket ones....just in case....

  • I sometimes use the fizzy vitamin ones you bung in water. Probably unnecessary but it makes me drink a bit more than I'd otherwise do so worth it for a quid a tube or whatever.
  • Just spent 10 minutes trying to get effervescent through the spell checker then realised cougie had just said exactly what i was about to say.

i wouldnt bother with the berroca type vit c tablets as they are something like 1000% your daily recommended allowance as anything beyond 100% is just coming out of you just as fast adding no value (unless bright orange p155 is of value to youimage)

i take the boots 100% A to Z tablets.  all the vits are 100% of daily allowance and no effect on stomach.

I agree that IF i had a decent well balanced diet then i wouldnt need them but i dont...so im happy spending about £4 every 3 months or so.

Wonder why you think it's the training that is making you pick up bugs ?

Lots of people do massive amounts of training without picking up bugs

dave - read the next line in the OP for a clue.   image

i dont think its that big a leap to say if someone is putting their body under regular stress in all sorts of weather that, coupled with a inadequate diet, could make you more likely to pick up bugs.

Lots of people dont do a proper warm up before going for a run, they dont all get injured.  But if you do get injured its the first thing people say to put right as prevention.

I always start and finish my runs a 5mins walk away from home. The do 5mins jogging @ 1 min slower than easy pace, 5 mins @ 30secs slower than easy pace and then easy pace for a mile before anything approaching a workout is what I aim for. It might seem excessive but it makes the working part of a run much more enjoyable.
  • He's supposed to be doing an Ironman as well Dean...

Just seems to be a catalogue of excuses why he hasn't trained
  • I see as usual Mark asks a question, but never returns until he has another one

    Zinc
    Milk Thistle
    Dandelion Root
    TMG (Trimethyclycine)
    NAC
    B-complex
    Magnesium
    A
    Super C (every other day)

  • A healthy diet is better than taking vitamins. Specially in the long run.
    ..
  • It seemed like you were trying really hard not to say that multivitamins in moderation are beneficial if you don't have an ideal diet.
