  • Cal Jones - I will be a walking pace (3:15) but will have hopefully returned from Tokyo Marathon the Tuesday before having completed all the Marathon Majors (at last).
Glad the recovery drink did the trick.
Have only had a chance to run a few 10.48 milers and two 10.19 miles including Parkrun plus the 12.51 miles this morning since my last posting  making
    YTD = 2460.63 miles
Will definitely aim to get to 2500 by the end of the year
  • *Sidles into thread, sheepishly* *Waves*

I'm so sorry for my very extended absence and the consternation it caused! Thank you to everyone who asked after me - especially the lovely Harmander and senidM for your kind messages - and even more sorry for not replying to them either. Life - mainly work - very much overwhelmed me and I lost the time for social media.

Well done for all the fantastic achievements that have happened over the second half of the year... everything from first Ultras to PBs to running in Nepal! :open_mouth: And congratulations to everyone who has joined the 1000 club... so many of you this year!

Condolences to those who have lost loved ones (Harmander and Dubai, I believe - sorry if I've missed someone). lilly - hope things get better for you, and hoping everyone who's suffering through illness or injury are on the road to recovery.

Welcome to out new comers who are still with us: MrM2, Gipfel, and Cal (hi Cal!)

As per the excellent cyber stalking by senidM - I have been running (kind of) but failed to achieve any of my goals this year and fell terribly out of love with running after the Manchester HM in October - failing to go sub-1:40 hit me really badly (ridiculous, I know... I actually managed my second fastest HM but it wasn't good enough) and I struggled to interact with anything linked with running for a while. Weirdly, my return to racing has been two 10K trail races - one in the dark - both of which have resulted in silverware! 4th lady and 1st FV40-49 at the Delamere Night Runner (bottle of wine and silver plate) and winning team at the Tatton Yule Yomp (silver cup).

Despite the slight bumpy running ride recently, I passed 1000 miles on 7th October (ahead of last year) and was hoping to maybe pass 2000 km by year's end, but illness has struck (twice) and I've had two separate weeks of zero miles so...

YTD: 1103.20 miles (Hobie you've got me well and truly beaten this year  )

  • Little Nell is back - Wow what a great Christmas present.
You now have to reply to each and every message you are mentioned in - just kidding.
    Good to have you back.
I am told I will be pacing at GNR next year - so you know (within a few seconds) exactly how long to wait for me at the finish.
Merry Christmas in advance in case you do your disappearing act again
  • Hehehe - thanks Harmander! I did consider name checking everyone...

I didn't do the GNR this year as I took part in various club relay races that took place around that time. I'll have to see how next year pans out.

I forgot to mention - I'm doing my third World Major in Chicago next year in October, so I'm not sure what my racing plan will be in Autumn 2019.

A very happy festive season to you and your family too!!!

  • Little Nell,

I know you have done London and Boston - Chicago is the nicest USA city out of the three Majors in the USA - New York is the worst - over priced, over hyped, rude people and terrible pot holed road surface with a rubbish finish line in Central Park.

You will love Berlin - really fast springy clean flat road surface with genuine support from the crowds lining the route.

Will let you know what Tokyo is like when I return in the first week of March.

    Welcome back Nell

So know what you mean about falling out of love with running, am in the middle of a "just can't be bothered" finish to a fairly crap year. But next year will be better, lots of targets, especially a GFA time for London 2020, which seems to me to be a good one to go for as it would be my 20th London!

    Onwards and upwards
  • Welcome back Nell!
I'm off for Christmas this year, and it's harder to get out running, too much socialising and enjoying the good life.

Was as at a party last night but managed to get out this morning. Only 5.43 miles and not the double figure run I was hoping for.

    YTD 1785.85 miles
  • Hi Nell, welcome back, wonderful to have you back & still putting in the good miles.
Ok so I might have shuffled more miles but yours were on classic courses, apart from Snowdonia most of mine were muddy and wet.

I've had a stinker of a cold all week but got out today... Wow what a lot of colourful snot I've discovered...hopefully get a few more in over the next few days to avoid family arguments.

    1422 miles YTD

    Happy Christmas everyone.
  • Merry Christmas 1000 milers!!!

Today's run was replaced with champagne and cigars for breakfast!!

    Have fun!!
  • Happy Christmas all! Hi Nell!
I'm staying in Manchester with my friend (parents both died in 2013 so no family obligations any more). I did South Manchester parkrun today, plus 2 miles there and 2 miles back again, and got a much better time than when I did it last year (25:29). The parkrun was pretty busy and there were lots of people in festive wear.
I hope you all manage to get some fresh air today. Hobie, feel better soon.

    Ytd: 1047.9 + 20 = 1067.9

Ipswich Park run today. Frosty and lovely.

Cal: I lived in South manchster for a couple of years. Loved it. I could Google this but which Park is the run based in?

Nell: great to see your name again. I always enjoy your contributions.

I plan to  write a little summary of my running year. Will do later but its made me reflect on the year, can always do more but it's been a decent one.
  • Donnie, it's Platts Fields. I was back there today in an attempt to ameliorate the calorific payload from yesterday - 8 miles logged. Achilles rather sore again - the improvement from when I had a week off with my cold was obviously short-lived. Ah well, back to the calf exercises once I get home.

Out this afternoon for a flat 14' seafront run. Main challenge was getting through the crowds; every man and his dog(s) was out today...showing off their new bikes, scooters....you name it. Can't blame them with such mild conditions. Now for that 'gap' until New Year. YTD:1543'. Happy running all.
  • Merry Christmas and Happy Festive Season everybody!!! Hope you've all had a lovely few days.

Thanks senidM, DubaiHobie and Donnie - I missed you guys

Thanks for the world majors intel. Harmander. I went in for the Berlin and Tokyo ballots this year but failed in both. Hope there will be plenty of pics of you with your six-star medal in Feb.

Sorry you've had a somewhat cr@ppy year too senidM. Come on up to run Manchester marathon if you're chasing a London GFA - it's perfect for fast times

Sounds like you're enjoying festivities, Dubai - nice healthy runner's breakfast there

Hope you fight off the cold soon, Hobie (I hear ya on the luminous snot thing!). Well done on running through the clogged head!

Cal - hope you're enjoying t'north. Nice couple of Christmas runs from you - fingers crossed for an improvement in the Achilles.

Well done on parkrunning too, Donnie. I'm looking forward to your running year in review.

Sounds like a good slalom run for you MrM2 - very fitting for a winter run!

I got out for a short trot on Christmas eve of 4.27 miles, and a nice leg stretcher today of 10.77 miles - meant to be a LSR as the start of my Manchester mara. prep. but ended up much faster than intended... felt great though.

YTD: 1118.24 miles. (It'll be touch and go if I can beat my 2017 final total of 1151 miles)

  • Getting close to end of year totals... Some big numbers being posted for sure and a massive well done to everyone whatever you've achieved it's all good.

Boxing day swim yesterday was possibly one of the calmest and "warmest" ever... About 300 of us this year for the annual life affirmation... Not dead yet.

New Christmas shoes for me to test out this morning. 8 miles, gorgeous morning.

1430 miles YTD, I've decided 1500 isn't going to happen but I can make 1450.
  • Boxing day swim sounds cold brr

    26.12 3.77
    27.12 6.13
    28.12 8.35

    YTD 1804.1 miles

And now for another day of brunching, big expat thing to do, eat and more specifically drink as much as you can on a Friday afternoon before a cocktail after party, 20 of us off to the Jumeirah beach hotel, could get messy!!
  • I feel for you Dubai Runner,

    lol

Have a great start to 2019 and thanks for pushing me during 2018
  • I’m getting back into it after a few days off over Christmas. 4 yesterday and 5 today brings me to 872.5 YTD.

I did 884 last year, so I’m hoping to just beat that this year.

  • YTD: 1075.9

Great efforts by everyone which I continue to enjoy reading about. I do hope we reconvene for 2019.

Looking back at 2018. The aim of the thread was a 1000 miles and I've achieved that. I've run a few more than in 2017 so happy days.

I've run 7 paid events (1 marathon, 1 HM and 5 10ks) along with about 40 park runs. I've enjoyed them all and I've been injury free so happy days.

The York marathon was the focal point of the year, my fourth marathon all at the same event. I wanted sub 4 and came home in 4 hr and 2!! It literally poured with rain the whole day and I hurt more than I've ever hurt when running before. Mixed days. I missed my  time target and it was the one I really wanted but I took things 'deeper' than I ever have before which was a surprisingly positive consolation. Regular readers may recall I've mentioned finishing events with too much in the tank, I didn't that day in York!!

Elsewhere I wanted a sub 46 10k but the best of the 5 was 46.05, but all were lovely events and I whole heartedly enjoyed them. Hopefully in 2019 I'll be back at each one, and quickly than this year!

My event of the year, the Askern 10k, near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. In many ways nothing special, a Wednesday night event in May, attracting about 600 mainly club runners from across Yorkshire, but cheap as chips, at the most friendly of clubs, in one of the poorest boroughs around (its a former pit village, race HQ is the miners welfare club which continues to limp on). In lots of ways the perfect example of the power of sport to overcome issues and bring people together.
  • Late check-in for me tonight.

Hobie - top effort on the swimbling... great to hear you're not dead and posting from beyond the grave

Dubai, I'm impressed how you're fitting running in around all that hardcore partying!

Hey Andrew - you're so close to last year's final score... I'm sure you can pass it for a big new 2018 total.

Wey hey - that's a great list Harmander... OMG you're in for Manchester!!! :open_mouth: That's ace, I can't wait to see you up here. We'll have to meet up beforehand, or after - whichever is easier.

That's an excellent review of your running year, Donnie. I need to take a leaf out of your book and learn to face adversity with more positivity than I've managed this year. You've ended up with some great times and some good targets to chase down in 2019.

A mixed pace run for me this evening including 3 x 1.5 miles fast, 0.25 miles recovery, with w/u and c/d made 7.30 miles.

    YTD: 1125.54 miles.

  • Donnie, I'd be interested in your thoughts on York as I'm entered for next year (did Chester this year, which was fab). I know there's a sneaky hill at the end!
I'm a Londoner but my dad was from Barnsley and I've been meaning to get up there and visit my one surviving aunt. She lives very close to the parkrun so, good excuse. :D
Crane parkrun today, in West London, plus a mile there and back from the station. My 25th different parkrun, and with 23 of those in London I am still not even half way through Lon-done. Yikes. A way outside my 5K PB but still a decent run, post-festivities. Finished as 9th lady in 25:19.

Races already entered for next year:

    Hampton Court half (Feb)
    The Big Half (March)
    Vienna Marathon (April)
    Liverpool R'n'R Marathon (May)
    Richmond Runfest Half (September)
    Yorkshire Marathon (October)

There will be others, of course, but I'll get to them later.
  • I’ve just created a new 2019 thread - hopefully all the regulars (and any lurkers or newbies) will want to take part again.

    I bet I still won’t reach 1000 next year either though 🤣
  • Thank you AndrewD.

Just wanted to share a sad bit of news.

Earlier this year I ran part of thwe VLM course to help familiarise a gentleman from the East End Road Runners club as he was going to run the VLM for the first time - I believe it was going to be his first marathon.

He wanted a sub 4 time and I suggested some training tips.  On the day, partly because it was the hottest VLM ever and his training programme was somewhat disrupted by the birth of his little daughter, he did 4:40:33.

He was a contributor on the 2018 VLM discussion Forum too.

His name is Shreeraj Lauria.  - His wife Rajshree and brother Supreme took part in our Dawn To Dusk race on 16 December.  He did the full marathon, his brother did the Half (22km) and his wife ran the 10km.

It was his wife, baby daughter and sister-in-law who died in Iceland earlier this week.

I am sure everyone will be hoping Shreeraj and the survivors make a full physical recovery although the loss of his wife, daughter and sister-in-law will be impossible to overcome.

    Sorry for the sad news.

  • Sorry for the typo - his name is Shreeraj Laturia
  • Oh, Harmander, that's such sad news. So sorry to hear of his terrible loss. Of course, wishing the same as you - a full recovery to Shreeraj and all the survivors and to find some way through this awful disaster.

  • Seems so unimportant in light of Harmander's news above but...

A fasted 5.26 easy miles for me this afternoon. Aiming for a double today so hope to go out for one more run later.

    YTD: 1130.80 miles.

  • Thanks Nell,

    Have a good run tonight.

Since my last data download, I ran two Parkruns with the there and back runs plus a 5km to boot making it 10.19 miles each plus the usual 10.48 miles on Thursday.  This totals

    YTD = 2491.49 miles

But I still have two days to do the 8.51 miles to get me over the 2,500 mile line.

As the races for the year are over (I include Parkruns in this category), I have finished  with 10 metres short of 654 miles in races alone (1052.50km)

Will try to beat that next year when my target will be 2019 miles
  • That really is awful, Harmander. What a sad end to the year.
  • I did manage a second, rather late night, run today. Was scheduled as 1 mi. w/u, 2 mi. "brisk", 1 mi. c/d... all went to plan but the 2 mi. "brisk" were actually 1 mi. "brisk" and 1 mi. "not quite so brisk but more like steady". Total was 4.03 mi.

YTD: 1134.83 miles. (Two days to do 16.17 miles... )
