    Hey all,
MrM2 - Glad everything seems good after the fall, excellent news, and well done the 3 hour run.
Cal Jones - Nice work this week, working through fatigue is always tough.
DCharman - awesome work sir. Finishing the 1st Marathon despite the 'wobble' took character - well done. You sound a heck of a lot happier about the 2nd, I look forward to hearing the full report.
Harmander - You sound like you are having a blast in Tokyo, I hope and trust that will continue for you!
JD1 - Not much rest in your schedule - nice going!
Dubai - Well done on the consistent work as always and nice sandstorm dodging ... I'm picturing you bedecked like Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia now ;)
SenidM - I hope you're enjoying your hols and I'm not even the slightest bit jealous.
    Donnie2 - Good running sir.
AndrewD - nice pace for threshold, keep it going.
Hobie1495 - I know what you mean, it's a very busy thread this year lol. Running under the stars sounds very lyrical, I'm running under grey clouds at the moment.
    AND, breathe in!
Out this morning (properly cold again) and started in the pitch dark, but quickly the sun came up and failed to shine through the clouds making it a very grey morning all in all. But, for all the moaning about the weather it was a good run out. My return to regular running is going ok.

PS The teams have obviously arrived in Glasgow for the European Indoors Championships; two Bulgarian 'gazelles' glided past me this morning as I ran along the Clyde, they looked like they were running on air - effortless! It's genuinely an awesome sight to see the worlds best in the flesh, and I'm sure they were only warming up!

Steven M2....Good to see you out running today, despite the grey clouds. I know what you mean when you talk about real runners; seems quite un-related to what I do! but beautiful to see.
David....Congrats on marathon No.2. No disputing distance run, whereas I'm often left wondering when Garmin records 26.52, or whatever.
Harmander....Not sure why I should feel so excited about Tokyo! Have a great time.

Out for the first morning of March, Plus sunshine! A 7' mixed run; enjoying the local park and the seafront. YTD:340'.

Couple of time around my 4 mile route, a 5km on the treadmill and parkrun (33rd place in 23.04 - take that) since last reporting.

Dave: Well done on the double marathon week, really enjoyed the reports

Harmander: Keep the Tokyo updates coming. Travelogue as enjoyable as running reports.

A couple of you have asked about my upcoming HM. Its not until 14th April, its the Sheffield half, big event by the Run for all organisation. Hoping for sub 1.50, first time on the course so no previous performance for comparison, its notoriously hilly. I think the event website will give me three times, the overall run, a 'king of the hills' section and a flat 10k 'the speed merchants' section.

Mr MM; you asked about my HM training. I'm not sure to be honest, I've done 4 marathons where each time I've obsessed about being sub 4, but only 3 HMs which were stepping stones to each marathon. This time the HM is very much a goal. Advice about long runs required.

  • Got up at 5:00 am this morning, beat my room mate to the WC. lol.
Had tons tons to eat as had time for the body to 'process it'. I was right. (too much information I hear).
Some guides took us to the 'gates' very close to the Keio Plaza Hotel at 7:15 am but did not take into account our different start pens. I made my own way to gate 2 as the official volunteers were absolutely brilliant.
Baggage bag searched and had security cleared sticker put on. Walked through a metal detection arch. My fillings did not set of any alarms and found th5right baggage lorry after going the wrong way first - must have walked a km (won't count that in my total). Joined the loo queue that became three queues at 7:45 am. Had a choice of a Japanese style loo or western style - thought I would enrich my knowledge as only wanted to pee. Escaped at 8:25 am and walked to my starting pen 5 minutes walk away. It was raining all this time.
Stood around with others like a wet lemon until the race started at 9:10 am (I crossed the start line about ten minutes later).
Room mate wanted to beat 5:15 so I gave him a pacing tag. Seemed a pointless exercise as he said he wanted to follow/stick with me. He always goes off too fast and  at fades rapidly late on.
At 5km we were 5 mins ahead of schedule. An unsuccessful attempt to go for a pee (by him) at 10km (the portaloos at Tokyo can be as far as 200m from the race route in some back street and when you get there you find there is long queue). We carried on having lost 3 minutes but still minutes ahead of schedule. I knew that he fades badly later on. He used to pop into the shops for loo breaks along the route after that. He did fade but we managed to come in at about 5:10 (please check the results when they are up) Bib numbers H80635 and H83875.
As our bib colours were different, we had to turn in opposite and he managed to find the tour bus, I got lost - but - not only the official volunteers were extremely helpful by walking me about another 3km around and around the subways but even a floor walkers at the McDonalds came out to help me find an official volunteers - genuinely impressed.
Room mate already refreshed himself by the time I got back.
Its now gone midnight and we are packed for a 7:15 am checkout. As this is not Trip Advisor I won't bore everyone about my take on the local eateries.
All in all, my total run time for the six marathons averaged 4:55.

4 miles yesterday (a 1 mile warm-up and then a parkrun) but I was marshalling the Thames Riverside 20 today so no running. Rather glad of it as the weather was a bit rubbish, drizzly with a lot of mud.
Harmander, there was an elderly Sikh running (very impressive beard) - I wondered if he was in your club? He looked about 80.

    Well done Harmander.
Donie 2.....Just looked at a training plan for a Half, and it confirmed what I had in mind; longest run was a 13'. Having run marathons and halves before you shouldn't find it too tough to work up to that distance. Of course there are risks (if you race it, or leave it too late in the plan) but there are many advantages too.
Didn't fancy battling the strong winds that are due in the next few hours, so got out earlier for a mixed pace 11'. YTD:351'.

    Well done Harmander.

Rubbish weekend for me in terms of running. Just 4.5 on Saturday and no long run (or run at all) yesterday. What's worrying is that this is now 2 crap weeks in a row, and 3 crap weeks in the last 4.

Feeling rather washed out and fed up with it all at the moment, so I'm really hoping that this feeling passes quickly and certainly in time for my target spring 10k on 7 April.

Andrew, feeling a bit fed up myself today. I did a diagnostic 4 miles and I can run but I have so many niggles. Not ideal with a half this weekend and a marathon in 5 weeks.

JD, nah, I'll be OK. Got a 10 done this morning. My niggles generally behave better at race pace though that could be adrenaline. I suspect, though, that my mechanics improve the faster I run and the Zoom Flys help as well.

  • Thank you all for the congrats - it was worth getting the Six Star medal after last of the Marathon Majors.  I hear they are thinking of adding another three but suspect over time it will be ten and then 12 Stars.
Got home last night, pleased I was able to watch some new releases
(Johnny English, Ocean's 8, TAG and for the life of cannot remember the other film for the moment on the flights).
Some good running out there by you all.

    Hey fellow 1000milers,

MrM2 - still clocking up the miles I see ... sunshine? sunshine? nope forgotten what that is. I see the wind arrived pretty quickly on it's heels.
Donnie2 - Personally I like my long run to be a 15 miler when I'm training to race a HM. But thats me. A 5 and a 4 not news-worthy??? Two months ago I'd have given the wife's left kidney for numbers like those ;)
Harmander - clap, clap, clap - take a bow sir, delighted for you. Well done on the 'recovery' miles afterwards lol. But STILL not through the 500 yet? come on buck your ideas up man ;)
Cal - glad to see your niggles arent stopping your running - and even though I wasn't there, thanks for marshalling.
Hobie - Nice work ducking the storm - well through the quarter-way mark now.
Dubai - Good numbers as always.
AndrewD - Sorry to hear the weekend was so frustrating, I hope the rest renews the mind and body - you'll be ready in April, I know it.
JD1 - by the time you read this you'll be over the 300 I'm sure, excellent running sir.

Things seem to be improving for me; every run is tough - last two miles are a mental challenge at the moment. Partly I think that's the anemia, mostly I think it's my body grumbling about the mileage increasing. There's a bit of work to be done to build up my mental strength as well, I very nearly ducked out of my run early this morning. The wind and rain was wild and I was freezing and absolutely drookit; combined with the fatigue from the run - I was very close to choosing to stop the run a couple of miles early lol.

  • Afternoon,

Sorry for the absence, has been manic at work along with home the last few days.

Senidm, Hope you have a lovely holiday, sounds bliss.

MrM2, Still that mileage is increasing, I also tend to mix my runs up with a splash in the pool, usually 1.5K, I find this really helps tired legs, great 19 mile long run.

Andrew, Glad you are feeling a bit better now, we all can relate to having a few shit weeks :)

Cal, Best of luck in this weekends Half, another PB maybe?

Harmander, Many congratulations Sir, I have seen a lot of pictures, mostly posted in the "Sikhs In the city" Facebook Group, I love the 6 major's bling!

Steven, Glad to have you back, two 10 milers, well done Sir, and plenty of time to catch up.

And so to last Friday's Track Wars event, we arrived as usual fairly early which gave me and my mum who did the HM distance, (walking), plenty of time to mingle with our usual group before hand.
The route was nice and easy, just keep going around and around, we got started at 09.30 and at the front was Adam Holland, who holds many records, Once we were away as Steven has recently mentioned he runs like a Gazelle, he manages to just glide, he makes running seem effortless, his PB by the way is 2.27 and holds the world record for 10 consecutive Marathons with an average time of around 2.45.
I stuck to quite a tight schedule, each 20 laps I stopped for a drink and something to eat, this worked fine and I managed to finish in 4.05.31, so happy with that, Mum for the record finish her half in 4.01.40 and Mr Holland 2.43 on the nose.

I went for a couple of my last one standing laps on Monday and the legs were feeling a bit heavy, so have had a couple of days to recover. Back to normal tomorrow.

David Charman - I like the Six Star Bling too but 'e indoors still won't let me display it.

Andrew D....Good to see you still contributing, and adding a few miles. Hope that things will pick up soon.
Steven M2...Glad that you are seeing some progress. Well done for completing the 10s!
David C....Thanks, and Congrats. on your well-crafted Track marathon! Have you worked out the different distances run by left and right legs? Well done to Mum for a steady walk! Interesting that you mention Adam Holland (came across him twice last year) He came 3rd at Dorchester (Steve Way was 1st.) Then he got 1st at Yeovil, in 2:32, (only 1:40 ahead of me.)

Timed today's run to miss most of the rain, and the worst of the wind. Planned a 15' run at approx. 10min/mile pace, but then decided to incorporate some hills, and finish with a few miles at Mara.pace. End result: 16' at an average of 9:32 (5:55/km). Rest day tomorrow! YTD:367'.

Can't she make an exception, Harmander? Seems a bit mean! Very well done, though!
Hang in there, Steven - my body is complaining like hell right now. I'm going to see a biomechanics specialist on Tuesday to help me get on top of my niggly bits. Right now I'm held together by gaffer tape (well, kinesiotape, but you get the picture). Another PB may be optimistic but I said that the last two times so you never know.
    Great run, MrM2!
And well done Andrew - close to the double ton now.

Hi all, long time no visit, and as usual, the thread has moved on massively! Well done to everyone on what looks like some great running. There are too many people to pick out, but:

Harmander, many congrats on Tokyo and the 6 majors medal (saw a picture of that the other day for the first time - it is truly amazing bling). Glad you had a good time there.

David Charman, respect for the track marathon, and a double at that - plus shaving so much time off the first! Hope your legs have recovered now.

Best of luck to everyone struggling with illness/injuries. Hope you are all sorted soon.

I got my second best ever half marathon time in Anglesey on Sunday - 23 secs off my PB, set 4 years ago - which was a really nice surprise, as I've got nowhere near that in recent times and especially wasn't expecting it on the Anglesey course, which is hilly in places. I have absolutely no idea where it came from, but it was a nice confidence booster! I was also happy not to feel too horrible at the end of the race, although I think that was because the course ends on a nice downhill, so even though you're going fast, you end up 'recovering' a little bit.

    YTD 238 miles

Just 5' for me today; a track sandwich. One mile each way to the track for some 400m reps with 90sec (200m) recoveries. The 400s averaged exactly 2 mins.  Had hoped to be a few secs faster but the wind had other ideas.
