  • Good job on the 21 miles Will. I'm sure that will do your confidence the world of good when it comes to marathon day.

Nice job on the park run enrvuk! I'm sure your body was grateful that you took it easy on the booze the night before.

My foot is definitely feeling somewhat better today. I can walk on it for a good 15 minutes now before the pain starts to set in. I'm going to try and brave a run on it tomorrow morning. I have no idea how far I'll manage but I will go prepared for the scheduled 18 miler and will just phone my wife for a pick up if things are not comfortable.
  • I did it! 18 miles in the pouring rain which is my longest run ever. Boy was it hard work, but most importantly my foot felt ok.

It certainly wasn't my quickest run by any means though. My legs felt really sluggish from around 6 miles onwards and my left knee was giving me a lot of grief for most of the second half of the run. Average pace was 9:05 per mile. Considering I wasn't even sure if I was going to be able to manage more than a couple of miles on the dodgy foot I have to be happy with that.
  • I'm in at the business end of my training plan for the London Marathon - I ran 15 miles 10 days ago which is the furthest I've ever run. After it, I felt some pain in my knee which I think is IT band syndrome and it won't let me run for any more than 5-10 minutes. I haven't completed a run since the 15 miles because it obviously needs time to heal but I'm wondering if anyone has experienced similar? Do you have any advice? How long before I can expect to be back running properly? I'm mainly worried about losing all the progress I've made on my fitness with less than 2 months to go.
  • Excellent work on the 21 miles Will.  Going a bit over 20 a couple of times in training helped me a lot.  If you can I would pop out for a short recovery rather than rest up entirely for 4 days, as the name says it should help your legs to get over the long run.   Shame about the badger and the hedgehog.

Regarding the swan - can it not be moved if it is causing such havoc to the other birds?  Or is that just put down to "nature"?

Hope your sis and BIL had a good HM enrvuk.  Interesting parkrun preparation - and a good time.

Good news on the foot alipat, I hope that it stays quiet after that long run.  Well done on your distance PB!  Were you possibly overcompensating for the foot and that gave you the knee issues?

I have no advice to offer benjamin regarding ITB - never suffered from it myself fortunately.   Other than maybe don't trial an injury too often - give it a couple of genuine days of rest and get a physio to look at it.  Have you tried searching in the Health and Injury section for infos on ITB?

10k race for me me today - 43:06 - my 2nd fastest over that distance so far - some 30 seconds slower than my PB.  Set off ok at potential PB pace but a brisk wind from the wrong direction on several km put paid to any hopes of a new PB and I probably wasn't up to it today anyway.  Nonetheless happy enough with the result as I know better now where I am trainingwise.  Legs held out well until around 5 and a bit miles, the lungs were not happy with the pace.  I prefer longer distances and slower paces than 10k it seems.  I put a longer report on the daily training thread if anyone would like to read a more detailed waffle.

Alipat, great news about your foot. That's one tough run in the bag - hopefully things will get better from now on.
Will, fantastic job on the 21.
benjamin, get yourself to a sports physio (don't bother with the GP, they'll just tell you to rest, and that won't fix anything). The physio will give you some exercises to fix the root of the problem. Foam rolling will likely help, too.

Bushy parkrun yesterday, as I was meeting some people there. Even though numbers are a bit nuts (1400 when I ran) they handle it well. However, I was a bit miffed to get an official time 30 seconds slower than I actually ran, (which was 25:16) so I guess the numbers can cause some problems.a
Marshalling at a race today, in rubbish weather, so rather glad I wasn't running myself. Hip isn't great, either. I hope it calms down in time for The Big Half next weekend.
  • Hi all, new guy here. Been running for just over a year now and really enjoy it.

Aimed to do a long today but only managed 6kms. Wanted to go further but my body didnt seem to want to. Very slow run but got some hills in.

Hi Jack and welcome. You'll find us a friendly bunch on here. Well done on 6 kms - not to be sniffed at.

Great effort with your 18, Alipat. Hope the foot continues to recover well. Always a nice moment when you realise you've just done your longest run ever.

Hello, Benjamin   I'm afraid I've no experience with IT band issues, but hope things improve quickly for you.

My brother in law is a Bushy regular, Cal and one of the JPR volunteers here is one of the original Bushy 13. I hear it's a bit chaotic at times, not surprising really. Nice time anyway.

That's a bloody quick 10K, Hazelnut - kudos. I may try to train up for a PB attempt at 10K after my mara, but will get nowhere near that. I reckon 52 mins is more realistic for me. I did get out for a recovery run this morning, namely Junior Parkrun with my son, his 43rd. That plus a few efforts chasing him round the bandstand actually work very well as a recovery. A nice little loosener :)
    I run, therefore I am.

Fantastic 10k,Hazelnut,you must be really chuffed with the time.10k is definitely one of the harder races, fast and furious.Your hard work is paying off, well done.

Well done on the 21 miler,Will, that'll give you lots of confidence for your mara.Have you binned your Asics!

Great 18 miles, alipat, good news your foot is ok.

Bet the paths are clogged with that many park runners,Cal.My local one was cancelled because of a water logged car park.Great time as well.

Welcome  Jack, hope you're enjoying your running.

14.2 yesterday, also used a gel for the first time.Thought it would be thicker but it wasn't too bad once I managed to open it.Left my hands sticky though!

6 gentle miles this morning, calf is slightly sore.

Great news on your foot Ali, that must have been a relief! Impressive distance too. Nice run Hazel, it's such hard work running into the wind. Benjamin, sorry to hear about your pain. I did see some exercises for ITB, it described it as a mechanical problem that needs a mechanical fix, might be worth some investigation. Cal, having volunteered last week at a much smaller Parkrun as a timekeeper it is tricky, but I think I was particularly inept!

My Sister and BIL finished their HM at Dartford, it sounded a difficult course.
I ran 16.5k in the morning, my longest run to date at an average of 6m/k. Round and in Regents Park as has become the easiest place for these. Weather was drizzly, but I quite liked that. Tried gels and isotonic tablets for the first time. I managed the last 1k at a faster pace, so perhaps they helped. Oh and I almost collided with what looked like a 10k race in the park! Duh.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
Hazelnut, I was chatting to the guys who fish at the pond today and they said some people were trying to catch the swan and take him to a sanctuary but he wasn't having any of that - they were chasing him round and round in a kayak without much success. Well done on the 10K - great time!
    Welcome, Jack.
Good run, enrvuk. I use SiS gels as they're easy to get down but I've tried various brands and none have given me any problems yet.
I've done my share of timekeeping too - my first attempt, I pressed the wrong button and wiped the stopwatch. But I guess that's why they have two timekeepers, eh?
A diagnostic 4 miles for me. Hip and knee are really grouchy - knee is still giving me the stabby stab if I try to squat, and hip is just grumpy, but I feel it most when I'm in bed. Fortunately I can run with it. I need to do something about it, though - I'm considering a movement screen as the physio that sponsors my club will give me a discount. Won't be cheap though.
  • A very ploddy 10 miles last night. 1 hour 40 mins. Used about 1200 cal.

In training for a half. couch to 10 mile in 3 weeks so going to be walking funny today. I never learn!
  • Bad luck on losing the 30 seconds on your parkrun Cal.  And well done on the marshalling - occasionally being on the other side of things in races tends to make me better appreciate the efforts made by the volunteers when I am racing.  I like the idea of a kajak chasing a swan.  I had similar with the hip recently - fine running but constantly annoying otherwise.  It has eased off fortunately.  I applied a foam ball (rather than roller) to the meaty bits around it every now and then - don't know how much that helped.

Hello Jack.  Well done on your 6km.

Good you got out for a recovery run after that long one Will.  All those mara training miles could well give you a chance at a PB over a shorter distance once you have had a good recovery from the mara itself.

JD regarding gels:  are you using the isotonic or the standard variety?  I find the isotonic easier to get down but the disadvantage is the size of the package (around 100ml for the ones I have), harder to stow in a pocket.  I hate the sticky hands bit of using them. Careful with the calf.

    Nice 10mile+ enrvuk.

Welcome also to LintonTravelTavern.  couch to 10 miles in 3 weeks is hmm quite a lot.  You must have some sort of base fitness to be able to do that but be careful.  When is your half?

4 miles recovery for me yesterday in pretty windy conditions. I laughed at myself at one point trying to keep going forward in the worst of the gusts.  At least it wasn't that windy for my race on Sunday.  Legs tired but no specific niggles, feel ok today rather than the typical race day + 2 = DOMS.

  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
I'm rolling it, Hazelnut - I use a hockey ball for that. Achilles is more annoying during the actual run - it comes and goes, though. It hasn't bothered me much during my races and parkruns but I think that's a combination of faster pace and Zoom Flys. It's more of an issue on easy runs.
Linton - welcome - that's a decent pace for an easy run. I generally do my 10s around 1:40something. Did one this morning - 1:42:42. Legs seem a bit bouncier than last week, due to the lack of a Sunday long run. Niggles are there, though. Hopefully I will notice them less when running the Big Half on Sunday.
  • Just short of 10 miles yesterday evening.  About 3 solo then the remaining miles with my Tuesday group - a good turnout of 7.  I pushed harder up the hilly second half than was probably wise but the legs were generally feeling better than I was expecting.   I might well suffer for it tomorrow in the planned LT intervalls session though.
  • <div>Good work on the hills Hazel. Sometimes it's just impossible to resist pushing yourself.

My body took a lot of persuading to get out of bed for a 5:30am run today. Hearing the rain bouncing off the windows certainly did not help with the encouragement!</div><div>
</div><div>As my legs often take a while to warm up at that time of the morning I decided to go for a progressive 5 miles. Managed to lift the pace from 9:03 per mile to 7:39 (I also managed my fastest outdoor mile that I've recorded at 7:29). Job done for today!

I can feel some pain in my foot again today but it seems to come and go from time to time. It's looking like I'm just going to have to get used to that until after the race.</div>
  • JD1JD1 ✭✭✭
I'm using isotonic gel,Hazelnut, need to experiment with different types, see what works best. What's a bad turnout!Nice run.

That sounds painful using a hockey ball,Cal!What stretches do you for your achilles ?I used to do a lot of eccentric heel drops, they helped me greatly.

Good progression run, alipat. Nothing worse than waking up early and hearing the rain bouncing off the windows, but it always pays off when you start racing.

Club interval session tonight,6miles,with 2 miles of hill sprints sandwiched in the middle.
  • Good running all. A nice few rest days for me. Did get some doms after the 21 at the weekend. Back out last night for a 4 mile loosener at relaxed pace. Going to be putting in some miles and efforts for a final big week before I start my Manchester taper. Feeling my way to the end of my mara training plan. I've adjusted it a lot over the last few weeks as I've learnt what my body (and mind) can and can't handle. A very good learning curve for next time.
    I run, therefore I am.
  • Great progression run alipat in particular considering the time of day and the conditions.  Well done.

    Nice club session JD.

Sounds good Will.  I am already looking forward to you doing Manchester. :p

A bit under 7 miles for me yesterday lunchtime.  Picked a flat route to compensate for Tuesday's hills and the fact I was out running again within 24 hours.  Now to find the motivation for today's LT intervalls - depending on how the wind picks up today I will juggle things around.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
Well done on the 10, Hazelnut.
6 for me this morning. It was a "get it done" run. Legs felt tired and niggly.
I have booked myself an appointment with a biomechanics specialist. What she does is very interesting - she is the only person in the UK to have such advanced diagnostic equipment so she can get right to the bottom of any issues. It's costly but at this point I want to get my body working properly. If I want to run a sub-4 this year, I need to do it. I'm seeing her on Tuesday, which means a lengthy tube journey, but I think it will be worth it.
  • That sounds interesting Cal.  I hope you can get something out of it.

Another 10 for me as a late lunch outing: should have postponed it really as doing LT intervals in a fairly strong wind isn't funny.  I will also class it as a "get it done" run.   I used my 1km (ish) loop with mostly a crosswind but even that was very tough.  Breakdown: WU (5km), 20 mins LT, 4 mins recovery, 15 mins LT , CD.
  • Damn, as everyone suggested, I ve overdone it like an idiot. The outer lower side of my ankles really hurts!

Is this normal? Will it go?

    Half marathon is 7 April

    Thanks
  • Can I still train or should I rest?
  • Linton rest up! If you end up having to
run/walk on the day that's not the end or the world. If you end up having to walk the whole thing (which is likely if you end up doing more damage) then that will not be fun in the slightest.

So I managed to fit a steady 6 miles in before work this morning. I rarely see much sunlight during my morning runs but the sun was up for a good portion of today's. I think Spring has finally arrived.
  • I agree with you, alipat. If it hurts, rest it until it doesn't, Linton. If not you could do proper damage.

Nice morning run, alipat. I just enjoyed running through the cherry blossom - certainly improves the mood.

I hope your biomechanics person does the magic on you, Cal. Sounds like it might tune you up nicely.

Good consistent miles, Hazelnut. I too am looking forward to Manchester. Having gone with a 20 week plan, it seems like it'll never end! Can't wait to toe the starting line.

Having shaken things up a bit this week I am feeling well up for all things running again. Think I just ahead to get through a mara training dark phase :) I did a off-on-off-on 4 miles last night, with the 2 'on' miles zooming along at around 8:45 m/m! Enjoyed it and so put a bit more speed training in this morning with another 4 miles at a decent lick with 7 or 8 full on strides mixed in. My legs are feeling good and strong and I seem to have shaken some of the fatigue out of them. Parkrun + there and back planned for tomorrow and then a 10 miler on Sunday. Will do my final proper longie next weekend. I'm not going to go as far as 20, despite that being the original plan. I think that would be a bit too much for the legs with 3 weeks to go, so will do somewhere in the region of 15 instead. With 2 x 21 and another 20 under my belt, in addition to quite a few 17/18 milers I think I have the miles in the bank already.
    I run, therefore I am.
  • JD1JD1 ✭✭✭

Good advice from everyone,Linton, rest your ankle over the weekend and get some ice on it.

You're sounding very chipper,Will, glad you're raring to go for Manchester.Enjoy your weekend running.

That sounded like a tough session,Hazelnut.Another run bagged though.

Hope this specialist lady can help you with your niggles,Cal.It'll be interesting how she can help you.Good luck with your HM as well.

Tempo session today.Hoped to do it in about 6.55m/m,but my legs legs gave up on me,think it was Wednesdays hill sprints.Came in about 8 miles @ 7.22m/m.10 miles all together.

  • Thanks for the advice guys, I have always played football so have reasonably good cardio fitness, but I am struggling with running on tarmac, it's playing havoc with my ankles.

I look forward to spring when I can hopefully run on the fields near my house in the evening, possibly giving my bones a bit of respite.

I also know I have done too much too soon, which I am annoyed at myself for, live and learn I guess, although I do hope they get better fast.

Some of you lot do great milage, it's inspiring!
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
Linton, sounds like your peroneals. They can get overworked quite easily. I'd book yourself in for a sports massage.
Raphael parkrun today - nice park in East London, quite far out (almost Essex). Will, I found it interesting that most of the pigeons there were white or mostly white. No Egyptian geese, though, although there were plenty of Greylags, which Tooting doesn't have.
The course was two and a half laps, flattish for the most part but there was one nasty little steep hill which I had to go up three times. Achilles did not like that one bit so I've an ice pack on it now.
Decent time though - 25:17 and 1st VW50. Bushy's now corrected last week's time to 25:16 so that stands as my fastest parkrun this year.
Also did 2 miles to pick up my lift there and another mile on the way home, so 6 miles all told.
  • Good Parkrun effort, Cal. Notching some good times this year. Do you think a PB is on the cards? Pigeons are very inbred, so whatever colour predominates in a given area will generally get stronger and stronger.

Nice tempo session, JD1 - pretty darned fast if you ask me!

I did Norwich Parkrun this morning with my Dad (although didnt run with him). My first one for a while and decided to go for a decent time. It was very windy, which didn't help, and also congested for the first few minutes - 542 runners today. However,  I clocked 24:36; one of my best times, so well happy with that. I think I need to start nearer the front in future, to avoid delays. The only trouble is then I'm likely to zoom off to quick with the fast boys and girls!. Jogged there and back too so 6 miles in all. Happy running y'all!
    I run, therefore I am.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
That's a super time, Will. How did your dad do?
I'm a bit like you with pacing. Both this week and last week I got slower with each mile. I'm a bit off my best, 5K-wise but I've not done any speed work, really.
Tomorrow...with my niggles and the fact it's going to be windy, I'll be lucky to get another PB. I'll do my best but if I don't beat my Hampton time, it'll be understandable. Conditions were perfect there.
  • My Dad was 74 yesterday, Cal, and finished in 29:05 today. Good luck for tomorrow.  Hope the wind drops for you.
    I run, therefore I am.
