  • evening all

podds - yuck, feel better soon.

lots of birthdays going on - hope they were all good ones

my course started last week and I am really enjoying it, the journey isn't too bad, although I don't like getting back so late - ok, only 7:30 but too late for running etc. I have managed a couple of early morning sessions though
  • Glad the course is going well MC!

Sorry you're feeling rough Podds :( Motivation sorely lacking in lots of places at the minute I think - as you say, so hard to drag yourself back out once you've got in

DL, I'm laughing at your description fo XFC's birthday - hope she's doing ok though

    (((((((((((waisters)))))))))))))))))

No running for me - in fact barely any walking. This living in the middle of the countryside malarkey is doing nothing for my waistline. I used to walk miles every day to get to and from places - now there is pretty much nowhere within walking distance so I end up in the car all the time. Yes there are footpaths and scenery - but 'going for a walk' is a very different prospect to 'walking to work'.

Forcing myself out every day to go 'round the block' (which is mostly fields) is working - this morning was simply stunning with the mist settled in the valley.

Anyway, gloomy and grumpy here this week - some of you will know a stoat got into the hen house last Monday night and killed two of my beloved chickens :(:( So awful finding them, and the other two just standing in shock. We had a suitably upset burial the other day, and the remaining two have been living in my study ever since. Slowly coming back to health and eating - and after a week are now being a bloody pain in the arse which I'm taking as a good sign!

Mr Cheery won't let them outside on their own again yet (they're still very nervous) so he's currently supervising. We've got extra fine mesh to cover their entire 8 foot high run so hopefully once that's done they'll at least be safe in there (although probably get eaten by a fox while free ranging which is what we always expected). And then maybe I can have my study back - I am meant to be on sabbatical after all (from what I can work out so far from the one chicken-nursing-free day I've had it feels rather like a grown up angst ridden PhD)

    Waist well waister pals xx

    Good evening, people.

Good to hear you're enjoying the course, MC. It's a pain though when the travel impacts on your running.

(((((Cheery chooks)))) I'm so sorry to hear about your sweet girls. It's very sad. I'm loving that you've moved them into the house for care and rehab ❤ I didn't realise you're on a sabbatical. How long for? What exactly is a sabbatical? Are you supposed to be doing something?

(((((Podds)))) There are some nasty lurgy germs about. I hope you're feeling better. I imagine you're very proud of your boys being super hero life savers.  I'm in awe of those brave boys especially Trouper. Please ask him where he got his super big brave pants from because they work amazingly well❤

Not much doing here. Work is ...well you can imagine. Ma is good. The boys are good. Nice young lady is well. Had a tough but luffly beach run on Sunday and have a few days off work this week followed by a weekend away with NYL.
Something is eating the hedgehog food in the alleged pest proof hoghouse. Unfortunately the condensation on the wildlife camera lens obscured who it was

    Hello?

Is it me you're looking for?

I can see it in your eyes.....

Oh, no hang on. I'm having an inappropriate Lionel Richie moment.

    Let's start again

    Hello

    Is there anybody out there?

I haven't been running I need to start again

    Again

    Hello

Sorry, not again with the singing, meant the running

You just can't get the staff these days

It seems that the lurgy may have killed off the thread.

    Hello????
  • I had lurgy last time I was here

Then I didn't have lurgy and managed a couple of run / walks and a swim or two

I now have lurgy again and I am sick and fed up with it

I am fat and unfit and am also fed up with that too........

    <sighs>.............................

I think I have infected the WAISTer lounge thoroughly and now every one is staying away :(:(:(

Oh dear, poor gloomy waisters!! :(:( Perhaps we need a bit of a spring clean?? Throw open the windows and wave that duster round while you're singing and dancing DL!

I ran yesterday for the first time since the ultra marathon attempt! Very slowly and huffily of course, and not very far, and I'm not going to promise it'll happen again... but it's a start. Trying to have more comebacks than DL...

Did you find who was stealing your hedgehog food Yums?! Pesky critter. It wasn't, er, a hedgehog was it??

Pleased to report that original chicken ladies are now back in their own house after THREE FECKIN WEEKS in my study. THREE WEEKS!! Have you ever had a pair of chickens live in your house for three weeks?! It's exactly as annoying as you'd imagine. Well, for the first week it was rather sad and they were still bewildered and quiet, but then as they got better... they became a bit of a menace... and I did lots of glowering and we did lots of banging and hammering and it took forever to make their own house safe.

Anyway, it's safe now (hopefully...) and they have three new chicken pals - who they shouted at for a few days and now mostly ignore. (The new ladies are lovely though, fresh out of cages and very much appreciating it (although not appreciating the rain!)

Yums, you asked about my sabbatical... Basically it means that I don't have to do any teaching til September. Teaching is only one part of my job - but it's rather a big part, and as such I don't get much chance to do the other bits (despite them being what is needed for promotions and glory and whatnot). So every few years we get to apply for sabbatical, and get let off all teaching and teaching-related admin for a semester to focus on catching up on several years of other stuff.

It's great. I love it. I applied for this about 18 months ago and it's taken FOREVER to come round but I'm having a GREAT time. I'm writing a funding bid (which will fund me a couple of days a week for a year - buying me out of some more teaching, if we get it of course), writing several journal articles and a book proposal, and generally sitting and staring at a computer screen and not talking to anyone.

It's great :D I'm also spending lots of time in cafes, and wandering round the fields, and generally knocking about and reading (serious intellectual stuff, not only books about chickens). But I do have to have something to show for it at the end (apparently) so can't spend the whole time slacking...

I do scan over here occasionally to see if there is any action ...

Daffs, I thought of you last week as we went on Bidston hill, and to Tam O'Shanter farm - lots of hens scratching around!

Here, lurgified ones, have a tissue and keep your distance!

We had a lovely half-term in the Lakes, little cottage for 2 of us on the outskirts of Ambleside (in fact, at the top of the road near Brathay where the marathon starts). Good weather, with two rainy days, then really warm at the end - Mr P had shorts (zipped off legs - I hadn't bother to take mine!) and I was just in a Tshirt.

Still trying to go for a walk each evening - not running much, but I can walk without having to get ready! Not cycled as muchs as intended (I knew I wouldn't!) too windy, rainy, snowy, busy. But I have now got a basic turbo, so no excuses. I kept thinking about it, putting it off a silly idea and it's nearly spring. .. but it's pouring, so I got one!

Marshalling at Parkrun tomorrow for the all female takeover part 2!
  • YumsYums ✭✭✭
Good morning, last few fellow WAISTers.

You didn't lurgify me. It's an occupational hazard working in a school. I'm surprised you're not lurgified more often. Please don't be fed up. You got out there for runs/walks and swims when you were well which shows you are determined to get out there regularly.  I think I need to come and meet Trouper soon

Daffy I need a sabbatical! You do make it sound wonderful. I'm loving seeing the FB pictures of the girls and your updates and the recovery of the traumatised chooks and the progress of the new girls. I don't know much about chickens so can only guess what sharing your house with them is like.

DL you've not restarted running? What the heck has happened? Is there an anomaly in the space time continuum ?
How have you been filling the void left by not running?

Tam O'Shanter farm, pippi  :-) Were you inspired to sign up for the marathon now you know of a cosy cottage near the start?  It sounds as though the weather was kind to you too.  A turbot is a good idea. No excuses not to train now. When is your ride?

Apologies for my absence. I've been  away. First weekend was with NYL. We went to Colchester which is Britain's oldest town. Visited the castle which started life as a Roman temple but was destroyed by Boudica. When the Normans arrived they built the castle on top of the temple foundations.  The weekend just gone was a work friend's hen do. 15 of us shared a 200yr old manor house near Bath.  This week I am mainly lying down!

    Taps on the glass

    Hello......is there anybody there?

    *hears ghostly moaning *

Well I'll just make myself comfy.

I have  very exciting news. Last night hog cam captured a series of pictures of a hog visiting the feed station. I'm made up because next door had said their staffy had killed at least 2 hedgehogs. I've blocked all access to next door from my garden but I must remain vigilant

Who cares about Brexit when hedgie pigs come visiting again :-)

  • Pippi LSPippi LS ✭✭✭
Ahh, hedge pigs! Piccies? So many things to take your mind off Brexit - sweet peas germinating, owls, Mr Ps birthday ...running ...
  • Pippi LSPippi LS ✭✭✭
Pippette came round last night as we were having tea to drop off her dad's card which she forgot to bring with her on Saturday, then to ask when I wanted to go to Stratford to see Taming of the Shrew - turns out she is pretty fully booked up! It ended up with us all planning to go to Mallorca in spring break! How did that happen? Apart from the fact we spent many years waiting not to go on holiday with each other!!! We haven't made any final decisions yet, but it's a good idea!

  • Pippi LSPippi LS ✭✭✭
Yay! We're off to Palma for a break en famille! With the agreement we can do our own thing. I see our old friend Footpather is there now. 🇪🇸 ☀️ 🥘 🍷

    Hello

Popped out, forgot to pop back

What excitement - Hedgehogs in Mallorca - sounds like an Indy band or an arthouse film

I still haven't restarted running - someone kick me

I have joined a walking group - least weekend we were in Derbyshire in the snow and   the horizontal freezing windy hail. Had to remind myself I had chosen to do this for pleasure.

Went to see the film 'Can You Ever Forgive Me' it's jolly good and I recommend it to the house

Yums - see you still haven't sorted Brexit - stop looking at Hedgehogs and get to it!!!!

Happy hooray it's the weekend - hope it brings you something chilled and refreshing

It's bringing me a chilled and refreshing birthday! and not on a school day. I'm starting celebrating tonight ... once I've done the marking ...
Then on Sunday I'm leading a chilled and refreshing Ramblers walk in Glenridding to the foothills of Helvellyn. (hoping it's not too chilled and we should get some views - it was horizontal sleet on the recce!)

Mr P is making me tea (he usually does now he's not working). He's having his first go at a Jamie Oliver 30 minute meal ...I'm not timing it!

Getting a bit crowded in here?  ;) (that's a wink so I don't offend anyone!!!)

Realised I'd forgotten to offer the belateds Pippi

Hope you had a happy one!!!!!
  • YumsYums ✭✭✭
OMG I don't see a WAISTer for weeks and then several come along at once.

I've no idea what FB conversations have taken place because I'm not in the group. Well not since I had to change my FB identity.

Happy birthday, Pippi! 🎂Your walks always sound fantastic. It makes me smile that you have to do it twice once with the recce  and again with your group. It seems to me the group get the better weather. As for Pippette...She's  finally growed up😀 Do you think there will be some reversal where you want to stay up late and she just wants to read a book ?

DL, walking is the new running dontcha know. Just ask Pippi.  I can see that you're having g the same success with the weather that you did when you went camping. I've not heard of can you ever forgive me. Who is the star and a brief synopsis if you don't mind.  As far as brexit is concerned I noticed in the press yesterday that Uri Geller has vowed to stop Brexit telepathically. I've decided to take this week off of work as clearly my efforts to prepare for a no deal scenario are no longer needed😀

Amadax bum to not sleeping well. The worry of insomnia is enough to keep you awake at night.

I had a lovely fairly effortless slow 6 miles along the prim  with chum this morning. I will try to sort out my hedgiepig photos but that involves outsmarting the various technological devices🤔They're infra red so not great quality. Anyhoo the hog visitor is very hungry so I am wondering whether I have 2. They also left 2 poops in the feeding station so again maybe more than 1 hog

  • Hello hello one and all

I have had a naughty school day off........officially looking after Mr P who had one of his cataracts done yesterday evening but to be honest he doesn't really need any looking after!!  But I feel so little loyalty or enthusiasm for work these days that I'm happy to play the system :)

I see some things on FB but only for some people - I think I'm not friends with some and blocked by others - it's all so very young and high tech!! :D:D

Glad you had a splendiferous birthday Pippi and family holiday plans sound like fun :)

Yums - you are welcome any time you like to come and see Trooper :) If you want to see some of his adventures I'll add you to a FB group Friends who like GT Canterbury.  Our adventures in Agility and Saturday morning jaunts are chronicled, sometimes even with photos :)

    Hello DL and Amandax :)
  • DLDL ✭✭✭
    Hello!

    I have been and run.

    Twice.

Hope Mr P can see properly again. I got a hospital appointment at the eye  clinic 7.30pm - what's that all about? Can I blame Brexit??  .Annual check as I am a galucoma risk so most to worry about?

Hope all the purview have passed.

Hope the coffees shop research is going well Daffers. Maybe I should consider  a career in academia?? Though hegehog research may not be on the agenda if it involves clearing poop.

Are your birthday celebrations still going on Pippi?

Happy Tuesday . Hope it brings something indulgent and frivolous
  • ""waves" hello pals I'm so sorry for my absence and I would leave a note on Meldy's desk but she is even more absent!

I think I will save this page as a favourite or something because its a nuisance to find

glad to see its the same in here, chickens and hedgehogs with DL making another comeback :)

I am currently on a secondment which actually means I don't have much work to do - shocker! have applied for another position if not will have to go back to the old job. I'm very relaxed about it all and would retire if I could :)

running is plodding along and have Stratford marathon soon and Liverpool in May. Mr FF is improving although can't realluy walk far but at least we can make campervan plans.

many will have heard that we said goodbye to our lovely Emmydog - at 18 she was a very lucky old lady - we miss her and will get a friend for Ned soon when we are ready :)

  • YumsYums ✭✭✭
    Good evening WAISTers!

How are you all. It's like Piccadilly circus in here😀

DL I like the sound of your plan to become a professor of daffyness and study coffee. I'd like to apply to be your assistant specialising in cake.  Running twice? Are you training for an ultra?  Are the eye clinic keeping an eye on you😀

Ah poor Mr P. I hope he's seeing better now. I'm sorry you're fed up with work. We need the waister lottery win !  Thank you for adding me to the FB grouno. I loved reading about tge agility adventures where Tom was the star ❤

((((((JFF)))) I was sad to hear that you lost Emmy dog. WAISTer pets always feel like my own. She certainly was a lucky old lady.  I'm glad your secondment is going well. You sound happier. Applying for a new job to avoid going back to the old one is a great plan. When will you find out ?

Plenty ofhedgehog activity in my garden. They are prolific poopers.  Today they're having hedgehog myself and hedgehog kibble from their new anti tip bowls. I'm still shuffling along. Some great news today. Miniyums number 2 has been accepted to the full time police force. Looks as though his training will start in September
Podds I'll organise NYL and myself and sort out coming to see you and my boys😀

  •    Yums great news for Mini2 :D
  • Well done Mini Yums 2 :)  Don't they just grow up well :):)
  • YumsYums ✭✭✭
    Good morning fellow WAISTers

How are you all? Apologies for my tardiness. Gosh it's taken me ages to read back😉

What have I missed? * waves to Mrs Farfast and Podds*   what have you both been up to?  Which races do you have planned JFF?

Podds have you found another job yet, one where they will appreciate you and you can take the boys to work?

All dull here😀 enjoyed a sunny and restful Easter mainly pottering in my lady garden.  My hedgiepig continues to visit
To have its kibble and hog museli.  Went to a bird of prey evening at the wildlife centre . The ladies were from the Kent owl academy. Excellent evening with buzzards, owls, vultures flyining or running around.  Still shuffling with run club and my ladygang.

Missing you all. I'll fire up the WAISTer bus and we'll  visit those missing in action.

    Hop on board
    X

    Gosh I think I've been dumped😟
Well I'll just tell you all about my life - that'll teach you to abandon me.  I have entered VLM 2020. Dog knows why. 😄Mother was thinking of selling her apartment and buying another in the same complex. FFS!  Yesterday tea time I returned home to find a very poorly hedgie pig near my feed station. Me and miniyums no1 put him in a box and snuggled him in a towel with a hotwater bottle and took him to a wildlife hospital which wasn't exactly local. Poor fella had a broken leg and ringworm. Their policy is to release every animal they treat back to the wild. No idea whether he'll make it.  On a happier note I peered out of my window as I went to bed and saw Biggie Smalls my big hedgie bimbling across my lawn

Well I've been a thread member since 2004. It's been an amazing source of support and amazing people. It was a place to share so much more than we do on FB X

  • oh the sad demise of the WAISter thread, you guys have been proper pals and at least we are mostly friends on FB but its not the same

I had a lovely weekend at Stratford and did the marathon - it wasn't my best but enjoyed it and will probably be back next year :) I have a 10k this weekend and then Liverpool marathon

Yums I'm so jealous of your garden visitors and  hope the poorly one recovers, I have seen a hedgie for a few years

I'll keep popping in here in hope xx

  • Pippi LSPippi LS ✭✭✭
I lurk around the edges too ... and yes, I miss it!

Mr P and I are off to Yorkshire tomorrow to do a sportive on Saturday - 50 miles for me, and no, I haven't trained according to the plan, but I have done a few 30s and a 40! He's sticking with 25. It's looking a bit showery, but not as wet as last weekend was for the TdY (it was nice here)

The weekend before that we had signed up to do a small local 40mile Audax, but Storm Hannah decided us not to even set the alarm ... 60 mile gusts and torrential rain!

I did try to find you on the VLM tracker, JFF, then realised!

Work's okay - new head still very positive. I had a bit of a meltdown last week for no apparent reason, very tearful, so got sent home on Thursday morning to have 2 days off plus a long weekend and feel better. I do. No apparent reason for it - lots of little things on my mind and some things I'm not terribly happy about (work-wise) but nothing that I usually wouldn't shrug off or just get on with, and nothing that is any different to before really. Put it all down to tiredness or hormones ...
