Running with arthritis in hip

hi all, anyone any experience of this? Diagnosis of osteo in right hip, early days but the thought of this getting worse... *shudder*
now have similar pain in left hip but there are races I want to do... about to start running again after a lot of hip strength exercises etc referred by physio when I didn’t know it was arthritis. Anybody managing it and running regularly?

Hi Badgerdaddy, I have arthritis in both hips. Run regularly, but do try to keep up with the exercises as well. Can be painful, most often not. Been told will need THR in both hips at some point in the future but also told by consultant that running will not cause it to become worse, it will get worse wether I run or not so I am running!

  • Fantastic - that’s exactly what I was hoping to hear, thank you TT!
  • Wondering how it was going? I'm in a similar situation to you - only a couple years behind..

One thing which works for me in winter is thermal kit! That and a very long warm up.
  • If it is inflammation then anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen could be used. You can also use cold or hot compresses to deal with such problems. However, if you want any therapeutic solution then you can proceed with osteopathic manipulation therapy (OMT). Yes, my husband recently got 2 sessions of this treatment https://www.archiecoogan.co.uk/treatments/osteopathic-articulation/ and he got much relief.

However, you should reduce your weight, use cold or hot pads and regularly perform the prescribed exercises. Indeed, there is no permanent solution to this problem.

  • Yes, I have been managing osteoarthritis in both of my hips for several years now and I have been able to maintain a regular running routine. I have found that the key to managing my condition is to keep up with a regular strength and stretching routine, as well as to pay close attention to any signs of increased pain or stiffness.
I also find it helpful to take regular breaks in my running routine and to switch up my activities to give my joints a break. With proper attention to these things, I have been able to maintain a regular running routine despite my osteoarthritis.
