  • Are you on Strava LMH? if so, follow me so I know who I'm looking for at VLM.

TR - if it was solely windburn I would have expected it to fade today, but if anything it's worse and stings to the the touch like sunburn.
  • Sounds like some tough days at the office yesterday.  Marathon running can be a bit of a lottery at times, but it's always sobering to see folks you know have put in the hard yards not get the outcome they deserved.

Still, we've got Dan in Boston today.  Come on mate, let's have one of your good ones.

In the spirit of Boston being on a Monday, and with it being our eldest's birthday yesterday, I postponed my longer run at the weekend to this morning - 16 up north along the river in Seville.  A lovely morning for it and glad it's done, it's a lot hotter now.
  • @TR @Essex Eagle @Jooligan I can’t’ really say much more than everyone else here, it sounds like a day of tough conditions out there never mind the niggles and personal circumstances on the mind in the build-up. Officially I am sorry I could not join you, but hearing about the winds I am now slightly secretly happy I was a DNS yesterday. Of course, I’m sure now I’ve said that, the Merseyside wind is planning something very special for me!

    @Mennania 21 on a tredie @2h09?! Must have been a good movie!

Managed a cruising 21 miles myself yesterday in 2h40, in place of a start at Brighton as injury recovery continues, longest run since Feb. It felt pretty good all things considered. My right hamstring was sore afterward so I put a cool pack in my rear jeans pocket which sat at the perfect spot and did absolute wonders. Will try for 5-6 @ recovery later today.

  • TR - your face really did say it all at mile 24. My favourite spot to support a marathon, but you can see the suffering everyone is going through. Glad to hear you talking positively about Yeovil already, sub 3 is there for sure.

EE - great report, very honest and got a real sense of the day you had. Sorry I didn't spot you out there (I had you up on the tracker), that power station section is so bleak. Sensible to take some time to recharge the batteries, and then see what you fancy for the rest of the year.

TR/EE - when the pacer came past me at 24 there were literally just 2 guys with him, no one has been able to hang on. Tough going.

LMH - Katie and I were looking at Boston (UK) yesterday as well. Fancy giving it a go one year for sure. Might be heading to the other Boston next year though..

13 days to go then. Easy week and then I'm giving a 10km a pop on Easter Friday. Been umm'ing and ahh'ing about it, but YOLO, and it could all go tits up in London anyway.

Signed up for Abingdon this year.
Not run a marathon since 2013 - been doing some kayaking and karate, so core strength is OK but a long way to go.

Good to see lots of familiar names here...

Jooligan.. I have been in a bad way after a couple of my marathons so I feel your pain as it were.  Never been offered lamb & claret as a cure though :)  Kudos due to you for seeing it through when it started unravelling.
EE.. sub 3:15 is still very respectable, take a bit of time before making a decision on future marathons.  The elation when you do nail one makes all the 'off' days seem worthwhile.
Menn.. my understanding is that the Garmin works out your cadence etc from runs outside and uses this info to work out the pace on your treadmill.  I must say mine is pretty accurate.. 5m on the Garmin is around 4.95 on the treadie.  Great paces BTW!
TR.. one of the reasons I've done 5 Spanish marathons and keep going back is that apart from being cracking events the weather for marathoning has been nigh on immaculate at all of them.  We just don't seem to get that predictability in the UK, they've been generally lucky at my local York marathon though it pithed it down last year - made a change from being baked at VLM I suppose :/ I see Yeovil is in June so you could get anything from unseasonal frost to a barbecue summer!
Padams.. that sounds like a pleasant 15 miler.  Enjoy the pacing duties, I do find runners are generally very grateful for the service.
SJ.. for annoying coughs & sore throats I often gargle salt water.  Not very pleasant but the germs don't like it up 'em!
2 week taper starts today so an easy 5 miler planned later.
  • I'm not EE - but all being well I should be one of the first runners you see going through in a charity vest.

    Is your RHR elevated Jooligan?

I think I'd have been prize rather than PB hunting at Boston TR, it's much more likely to be windy in the fens than not and the course is very exposed. How did he do?

Hmmm, not sure which I'd prefer for a trip away Joe............LOL.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • LMH - No.

    As you were.
  • Ah, not great marathon news. I was thinking about you all yesterday morning.

TR Seem to have the right attitude, from your training that Ive seen, I can't imagine thay physically yesterday will have burnt too many matches so yeovil should be good.
I'm going to do London next year.

EE sounds tough, but as was said, there is no rush to retire

    Jools, christ that sounds rough

LMH RHR was 40bpm this morning, don’t usually monitor it though I do know it was 41 when I was having the pre-marathon medical Friday evening so no change.
Completed my lab rat commitments today by providing further blood & urine samples 24hrs post finish. A very sedate pootle round Brighton on the MTB with lots of stops to get there & to buy some tickets for a gig in December. Reassuringly it was still windy but also quite a bit milder so guess it could’ve been worse yesterday.
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
Wardi - mmmm, maybe i need to come to Spain with you then. Yeovil is 9am start so hopefully not too warm, last yr was fine.

WTG - i feel remarkably fresh today, and could run but wont.

LMH - goldrush bagged his gfa, so it'll be just you and me at yeovil.

Took my favourite girl to Hayling for a walk on the sand (SPO came too).
  • It's good to know what's a normal RHR for you Jooligan - the best indicator of illness or over training.

Sounds like a nice day out TR. Goldrush had just planned to do Yeovil as a back up then?

Jooligan - ouch!! That sounds like a rough old day. Well done for hanging in there until the end. Was that 5lbs lost after/by the end of the race or in the days leading up to it?

ES - nice weekend's work with the parkrun and 17!

EE - glad to hear you're satisfied with your time. The marathon will still be there if or when you're ready for it.

Cheers for the 10km comments. Last week was my first attempt at properly trying to restrict myself to allow me to even out my issues and restore some balance. A total of 60m including 5 x (2' fast, 1' easy), 6 x 1km (with 5 at what turned out to be 10km pace), and the 10km race was probably about right. I'm feeling a little rough after the race but I think that'll continue to be the case until I get over this flare up and manage to regain some decent fitness.

Jooligan - sounds like a tough weekend.  Ive passed ouit twice after a mara - once in a pub in the centre of london meeting up with the sub 3.15 crowd post VLM a good hour or so after the race. Sent peoples celebratory drinks flying everywhere.

Garmin - I am now inlcined to think the tready is more right. Im a fidgety runner adjusting earphones n stuff so it doesnt swing consistently.

Im reserving a target time for Edi until ive got back on the roads and something tangeable to hang my hat on but Im way too conservative to go for sub 2.30 at this stage. Maybe an autumn run or VLM next year before I take that one on.
  • MennaniaMennania ✭✭✭
On another note - does anyone have any experiences of a running coach and if so would they recommend it and could they recommend one?
  • JooliganJooligan ✭✭✭
TT  weight was measured about 7pm Friday then again about an hour after the race. I regularly lose that kind of weight training on the treadmill, sometimes more. Decent 10K from you with a very strong finish.
Menn I've never actually passed out so obviously not trying hard enough :DStevieW has a running coach & he seems to be making excellent progress.
Back home now after breaking the journey at my sister's last night. Legs feeling tired but not too achy but I feel generally shattered. It's raining here too so if I do anything today it'll be a gentle swim.

LMH -- oh no, sorry about FiL funding. My Dad ended up at a really nice care home, but it was eye-wateringly expsensive. Eventually he went downhill enough to get some kind of NHS continuing care(?) funding, which made a huge difference.

TR -- the most epic number collection exercise ever. Not much you can do about the wind, sorry you didn't get the result you were after though. Roll on Yeovil. (It would be interesting to know whether PP attempted to factor the wind into his pacemaking, or just had to crank the power way up into the wind.)

EE -- also a tough day at the office there.

    TT -- nice 10K

OO -- excellent result in Paris, well done!

Jooligan -- crikey, glad you're in one piece after all that.

I did my last training marathon on Sunday: reps/tempo staircase to ~14M, then steady, total about 3hr02. Conditions in Cambridge were perfect, I should add. I was pleased with that, but the pace for HR would still suggest about 2hr45 in VLM, not my previous "normal" 2hr40. I'd like to make it 10 consecutive sub-2:45 VLMs but even that might be a risk... will know better after my last MP trial on Sunday. But anyway, tapering now, and on a somewhat-reduced carb diet for the next week.

  • StevieWhStevieWh ✭✭✭

Menn - As Jools has said I am coached by Lewis Moses (New Levels Coaching) who I would highly recommend. It takes the mental pressure off setting training and also as TR has says makes me do stuff I possibly wouldn't set myself. I've also learnt a lot from working with him

Charlie - Your training is bonkers! Enjoy the taper

First run since Manchester last night. Quads still a bit achey but aerobically I was cruising

  • You do know the evidence for carb depletion is not generally thought to be very good now Charlie? I couldn't put myself through that. The only care home that will take FiL costs over £1400 a week - fortunately this should be approved due to his level of need. There are three sources that should contribute to the cost -  he is subject to Section 117 of the MHA; health and social - it's just that the evidence originally submitted was pants (I hope).

Sounds as though taking it easy is the right thing to do Jooligan.

    That's a while without a run Stevie.

I found a tri coach very beneficial Mennania but have never had a run one.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Menn - a coach would help most folks imo, as they will make you do the right things all the time, hard stuff hard, easy stuff easy etc and make you do what you need to do to get better. Id expect a lot more quality though.

CW - the pacers would have had to smash it to keep on pace, the were on for 2.59 when i spoke to pp. In order to maintain a ateady effort theyd have needed several minutes in the bank for the last 4 or 5m into the wind. The wind kept building, through the day, even 16 to 18 which was running east was eind affected even though it wasnt on seafront. The bell was tolling when you could feel the wind in he town centre.

Got a bit of lurgy, but no urgency to get back to it.
  • CharlieWCharlieW ✭✭✭
LMH -- I'm pretty half-hearted about the carb thing; half portion of pasta with extra topping, still have lunchtime sandwiches but the usual doorstops are cut rather thinner (extra filling instead), tub of cottage cheese instead of malt loaf for breakfast. I'm just aiming not to put on weight during the taper, when I still feel ravenous but aren't burning many calories. Best of luck again with the FiL!

TR -- that's just it, I'm guessing the pacers would have to bank time early knowing about the headwind later, which makes it all the more skilful a job on days like that.

An idle day by the way, just short cycling commutes, but I'll aim to run quite a few miles tomorrow and overdressed, for heat acclimatisation.

Cw - but if they do that they have to drag 2.59 hopefuls through 20 on 2.55 or 56 pace. It was ridiculous in last few miles, so would need a massive lift in effort. I will mull over going back next year. Shame it was an easterly too, which is rare.

Charlie - I'm having the opposite problem at the minute, less miles, feel like I'm eating for England and weight is going down............

Hope it's nothing too bad TR but as you say some down time won't hurt. How is your dad doing?
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Congratulations to all those who hit their targets in the spring marathons so far and commiserations to those where it just didn't quite work out! Manchester SJ, Stevie, WTGY, and Nicko1981, Paris OO, Brighton TR, Jooligan, and EE . Some nice PBs surfacing along the way (Menn@Wilmslow, SJ). Good to see Selbs, Tmap, CRAB & Ode popping in too!

TR - I feel for you after a so-so run at Fleet and now hobbled by the wind at Brighton. Reading back, you've had a difficult time (the train number chase topped it off!), I hope you can rally for Yeovil. It was good to catch up (briefly) with yourself and Goldrush during the warm up at Fleet

Things have gone fairly well on my side in the last few weeks, knocked 20secs off my HM PB with 72:35 at Fleet (off the back of a half week mini taper). I raced the Salisbury 10M Sunday just gone. Thought it was going to be a good one, short story is that the first two miles were promising (c.5:30 pace), the rest didn't live up to expectations. Had to run solo for 8M and struggled to keep the pace up.  Finished 4th in 56:58, so a reasonable run non the less.  Also saved myself the need to hang around for an extra hour+ waiting for prize giving.

On the glide path now, I think I'm in the best shape I've ever been for a marathon with 14 weeks to date averaging 107M/wk. I've been on the heat adaptation too with over-dressed treadmilling and (extended) sauna-ing at the gym for the last 10 days. Really can't wait for a week Sunday now (and even more so the beer afterwards  :D )

  • Blimey that's some mileage Al - I thought I was doing well with 7 weeks at 100+. Sounds as though you're expecting a warm one?

FiL's funding agreed, move to care home happening tomorrow, hopefully I can get some sleep and recharge a bit in the next few days.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

That's great news LMH and should take a bit of stress away from the family, not to mention your marathon prep!
Al P.. sounds like you're in great shape, hope the big day brings a PB for you.  Don't worry about a slightly off-key race, this can happen in the midst of a big mileage campaign.  Big picture & all that.  :)
Was anyone else tracking Dan A at Boston?  The 2nd half sadly unravelled for him so much so that I messaged him at the end to see if he was ok.  He was eventually revived though understandably dispirited after finish line care and attention.  I'm sure he'll be along soon with the gory details but thought I would let folks know that he is ok and lives to fight another day - presumably London if he fancies another one! :o
Our occasional club coach was down last night and some fast relays were organised.  I know my limits with this sort of thing so didn't push too hard, don't want to ping anything at this stage.  One clubmate did hobble home with a tweaked calf muscle.  :/
8m in the sun this morning, very pleasant and got to take the gloves off.  Pre-marathon massage tonight and haircut tomorrow.

SW - cheers - looking him up
CW - Fig rolls are my Carbo load snack. You can get through the daily allowance quite well sneaking one or two of them in - I only load from Wed to sat lunch of the race week.
LMH -  :) No excuses now then!!
Al_P - Thats serious mileage - Im looking forward to see how all the hi mileage trainers convert come race day
Wardi - Defo not worth the chance pushing now.

11 with 6 x 1000m at 5.11 pace last night. All ok including the one i did on the road. Off to see specialist re toe tonite then time to focus on a few weeks with as much as quality as i can fit in without overdoing it. (subject to green light)

  • I was wondering how Dan had fared Wardi - thanks for that - glad to hear he's ok though it sounds as though he may have a story to tell. Very sensible with the relays. I'm planning a haircut next week and my sports massage is next Thursday.

Mennania - I fear it may have come a little late to save this campaign but even if it just means a few nights better sleep it has to help. Hope it's good news from the specialist.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

LMH - good news, well done for keep fighting.

Al - good to see you,  i noted yr 10 4th place, very nice.

5m easy legs felt good, slightly sore/groin but much better than after Abo.
  • JooliganJooligan ✭✭✭
Very impressive training Al - hope it converts well for you.
Great news LMH. Just in time for you to destress for London too.
    Sounds very promising Menn.
Similar fare from me TR. 4 slow miles along the river bank for me. Apart from my troublesome right piriformis legs felt fine however I was reduced to CWesque plod pace to keep the HR down.
