lumps and pain in leg when running

My son has recently taken up running but now after about 2k he gets pain in his lower leg and small lumps appear, the pain means he has to stop. After about an hour the lumps go and he has no problem walking. Any ideas ?

Where are the lumps on the lower leg? Shin splints spring to mind but I don't think the bumps disappear after the running stops.

Best off getting him to the GP for a diagnosis or referral to a Physio.
  • Sounds like Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome to me. It's a condition where the facia over the (usually) lower leg muscles doesn't expand when the muscles expand through exercise. Usually comes on after 10-15 minutes of running and goes away after running is stopped. Very common among teenagers. I had the surgery to fix it a year ago and I can finally run again.

    Good luck!
