I’m in, no point having a green number if you don’t use it and it’s Slow Ducks 20th
  • Becca7Becca7 ✭✭✭
I'm aiming for #8.  Hopefully so will be Marty and Carmen.

Count limpy in, going for half green again :)
  • Ooh exciting. A shiny new thread :)

Although I don't fancy my chances of qualifying for 2020, I hope to continue lurking here from time to time to see how everyone is getting on. 😊

Can’t stop now! 19 finished so far aiming for my 20th in 2020 - the numbers line up quite nicely...

I have already booked myself into Onomo.
  • Terry - I'll lurk with you :)
  • Well I’m still in Durban post 2019. This seems premature BUT.. I’ve already planned my next 3 years of Comrades so who am I to talk.

2020 - back to back. Experience down run.
    2021 - down run.
    2022 - up run.

So I don’t jinx myself I’m not going to set targets for 20/21 but we all know what I want :expressionless:

I wonder if I’ll get man flu when I land back in the UK.

once again, great experience. Thanks for everything !

Oh.. also. I’m doing 2 oceans 2020. I think I have a problem. Anyone else?

A lovely new forum, I promise I'll try to keep it clean Lowrez. I think I've been hanging out in the Paris Marathon forum for too long. Belaire booked, and, more importantly, my ex has agreed to the boys staying with her that week. 2020 is the one year for the next few years where they neither of them has any big exams in June, so another reason for not putting things off.

Im hopefully in as a novice, all I need to do is improve health (physical and mental), get an uninterrupted block of training in, qualify (marathon PB 4.06 so should be ok if i can get back to fitness), and most importantly convince my wife that spending such a large amount of money to run 56 miles is a good idea!

im thinking about staying for a few days after the race, so Belaire availability not quite released yet for my full stay. Price seems basically the same as Onomo so its a toss up for me.

Slow Duck- you seem to be an absolute pro at everything Comrades- I take it you were happy with Onomo this year if you've re-booked? it would be nice to have a pool for recovery. I guess the other important things are breakfast and how far away it is from bus pick up?
  • Mc HillyMc Hilly ✭✭✭
Great to see so many already making plans for next year, I’ll be there too, couldn’t miss Slow Duck’s 20th! I just need to decide on accommodation, probably Belaire again, and if just a flying visit or to tag a few days on (anyone else possibly interested in a few days afterwards?)
  • Slow DuckSlow Duck ✭✭✭
Johnny1984 - yes, I thought Onomo were very good for the price - location is pretty decent - only a couple of blocks from the Expo and bus pick up - although a slightly longer walk back from the stadium than the beachfront hotels...

baldstan ignore most of what I say, my tongue is usually in my cheek :)

McH I will have a bit of time on my hands but I'm worried that if I change my modus operandi now worse than only making to the top of Polly's will befall me. So maybe I will just make the usual flying visit... to tempt me to stay longer what was your thinking on additional activities? I recall Terry being aghast at our scant few hours on the ground too, maybe he has some ideas?

  • Peter RPeter R ✭✭✭
McH, I may be up for that … I was bought up in Durban and know the area pretty well.  Cant beat a safari :)
  • Terry48Terry48 ✭✭✭
Lowrez, as Peter R says, 'can't beat a safari' (e.g. to Hluhluwe Umfolosi or other.). A side trip to the Drakensburg mountains region would also be doable over 2 or 3 days.

    Hello!!!
Looking to put my hat in the ring for Comrades 2020 so hoping to pick the brains of all the experts on here.
also looking to make a holiday out of it so any tips on that would also be much appreciated
  • Becca7Becca7 ✭✭✭
Welcome aboard Millsy.  This is the best race in the world so you won't regret it and South Africa is a super place for a visit.
  • 1owrez1owrez ✭✭✭

Got The Hilton for £85 per night including breakfast but had to cough it all up right now :o went for an extra night so will be kicked out on Tue 16th - Blimey - did I get it right - it is running on 14th isn't it, how come that is so radically different from 9th this year? Of course I can hang around for longer as have not booked a flight yet.

Wow - Millsy - that means if you are successful and go for a back to back in 2021 - it will actually be a "face to face" medal you get!!!

  • Hi! I’m thinking of entering but at the mo I’m finding it tricky understanding the entry criteria for international runners. How do I get written authority to enter? And is it better to go through a tour company?
  • Becca7Becca7 ✭✭✭
No need for a tour company Mrs R, although they seem to provide a nice service, most of us go independently. The written authority requirement was rescinded last year and shouldn’t be needed (unless you are a contender for a prize).
  • 1owrez1owrez ✭✭✭

There's a point - I was very last person on the route this year, but I did not register - is that why I haven't been given a wooden spoon yet?

I'm in black back row far left, is that Thomas Clowes third person in on the second step on the right? is Slow Duck kinda in the middle of that row, Running Rodent top row far right, running out of misguided recognition now - lots of arms in the way in this one on some of it.

  • 1owrez1owrez ✭✭✭

Mrs R, welcome, what's your typical marathon time? At the moment you need a sub 4:50 commencing September this year and probably have until the end of April to get it. Although  this is the first year they brought it down to 4:50, in prior years it was 5:00, so we need to wait for them to declare the mark for 2020, suspect it will be the same though.

Where do you plan to run your qualifier?

You will be placed in a starting pen based on your qualifying time, with this being a gun to gun race that gets important for slower qualifiers who could spend a good few minutes before they cross the start. If you qualify in pen.D or below, you can register to collect for a Comrades charity and if you bring in more than 6000 ZAR, about 330 GBP, they will move you up to pen.C

Is that Marathon Talk podcasts' Tom Williams and his Dad Brian standing up immediately behind the flag? Their Comrades episode this week well worth a listen, Brian finished his first comrades at the age of 73.

6000ZAR isn't too much for the bump up to pen C, I'll have to get fundraising....

Wouldn't miss it for the world.

Training started with an impromptu trigger.  I was jacking up my gate to maintain it. It came off the retainers and fell on me whilst still in the crouching position. It weighs roughly 150kg. I was very lucky I was able to absorb the impact. I just have a cut on my shoulder blade. It was nearly the end of me.

So there isn't time to delay.

    4x 2 minute intervals done.

    Number 6 calling

Best race on the planet. Defo be there for number 8.

Thomas - knew you would be back!!!!!! TO is amazing as well and Cape Town is a great city to relax in. I have just come back from a week in Cape Town. Can highly recommend to visit, you won't be disappointed.

I think I see McH next to slowduck as well ... I left before the photo was taken

they announced on social media today that it’s a sub 4.50 from 25 August. Did anyone else see that?
  • 1owrez1owrez ✭✭✭
Social Media, she's fifth in from the lefttop row :D

Looks like I didn’t get the memo about wearing Mubarak comrades shirt

So.. the down run. It was hard enough for me getting up and walking 10 minutes to the start. The idea of getting on a bus from Durban at 3am.. eurgh.

Does anyone stay closer to PMB and/or use there own transport to get to the start?

Landed back in the UK. As seems to be the theme here I feel really rather awful :P Spent a large amount of my flight writing up my Comrades race report. Coming soon !
