Jelly - that's good then that the huge ice cream is not included in race fee, not that there's anything wrong with free post race food.   But I and a lot of other folk wouldn't eat that amount of ice cream which is a junk food after a marathon or any other time.

Nice to have a good medal, buff and shirt.

Shades-Just looked at that after you mentioned, personally I wouldn't have booked it after this years,we had a bit of a flood last year and that was bad enough for the half.Looking at their numbers,in the last 2 years total numbers are down 20,but 40 down on the marathon and 30 up on the 20 mile.If they find a different route then it's great timing for a 20 mile being 4-6 weeks before the main April marathons.

In Big G's Nature Watch series, it's all gone a bit quiet.  No signs of hedgehogs although I'm fairly sure there are some around, but haven't seen them on camera yet so can't be 100% sure.  For two nights in a row, the camera has picked up a fleeting image of a fox, but really it's just a blur as it's trotting too quickly for the camera to pick it up properly.  No more badger sightings for quite a while.

Not sure whether to write this, but the club could potentially find itself in an interesting situation in the future as a previous male winner of the DD has transitioned to female.  Chair last night mentioned he is finding out what that means if the person turns up and breaks a female course record.  It seems a possibility, as they're only recently back running, but running very well. They were part of a mixed team at a recent, local relay race, where they were in the same team as AH, and the team won the mixed category and she ran very quickly.

I have to say, I’m finding it a bit difficult with the old pronouns. I vaguely knew this person as I went to school with them, so it’s the first time I’ve personally known someone in this situation. Obviously there’s the running connection and very occasionally I’d see them out running previously, and I had half registered something when my Strava feed had what I thought was a new person appearing over the last few days, but I just scrolled by and didn’t actually take it in. I hadn’t thought about how she could have suddenly appeared in my Strava feed so hadn’t twigged until Chair mentioned the potential situation regarding the DD last night.

I hope I haven’t said anything offensive there - it’s just a situation I’ve never come across personally before, and neither has the club.

Big G-In my old store we had someone transitioning and it's really hard to get used to more than anything, had people out of habit call them their male name etc.
In terms of racing it's really hard to know what's best to do,have they had surgery and fully transitioned yet? If not then they still have most of the physical benefits of being male so,in my opinion, shouldn't be allowed to race in ladies races if prizes are available,I appreciate some wont see it that way but until treatment is completed I cant see the difference from me saying I'm female and racing as such.
It's a massive can of worms though and people with far greater knowledge than  myself need to fully address it soon so everyone knows the rules.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Ian, I’m pretty sure they’ve fully transitioned. On her Strava page she mentions that she’s now a transgender runner, anyway.

On a separate note, I entered a few local races yesterday via different online systems and for the first time that I’ve noticed, they had M/F/non-binary as options. But what happens if a trans person identifies as female and so ticks the F option?  I haven’t really thought about any of this before, at our amateur/club level

Ian - I think Wrexham will do better with 10 and 20 mile distances.   There's already a very popular half in the area a few weeks before so I think the 10 and 20 will suit well especially for those getting ready for an April marathon.   That time of year not that pleasant for marshals either having to stand out for 6 hours or so.

Big G - I'm sure the wildlife will be back soon.   Plenty of food around this time of year so maybe less foraging in gardens/bins etc.

Re the previous winner of DD, crikey that is a dilemma, but it would be good to know the legalities of what are the rules.  I had a quick look and UKA issued a paper at the end of last year, ARC would adopt the same rules I'm sure.

Years ago I used to work in the same building as a local radio station and if I was working on a Saturday morning I often shared the lift with one of the DJs and he was transitioning to a woman.   This was before it was politically correct to treat transgender folk fairly and he/she was eventually sacked from his job.   But as we only met once every week or two weeks I noticed as he was changing, starting with the hair then the make up, then the shoes, then clothes.   We used to talk about the weather or about nightclubs, I worked for a company that had several clubs and bars.  He was very brave as he was a well known public figure.

  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Big G-If I remember right, they had to be living all aspects of their life as a female for at least 2 years before doctors are allowed to consider surgery and fully transitioning,so this could be one of the steps towards it.
Boston now let you run as a female if you self-identify as so,I remember reading some forum last year about it,as they were wary of many saying they are female to get an easier qualifying time.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Ian, not sure then - maybe they haven't transitioned fully as you mentioned.  It seems like one of those times where it's probably rude to ask!

Shades, I had a scan through that doc and it seems that a transgender person has to basically allow UKA access to the relevant medical records, via their GP.  Absolutely no idea if this person has done that, but they were definitely running at Haldon relays two weekends ago in a mixed team of 2 men and 2 ladies.

I missed out on Wrexham this year as it was house moving weekend, so looks like I won't get to go there.  Conditions didn't look great this year!

As for me, I was going to do a longish run today, but ended up shelving any run.  The shoulder is just a bit tender compared to recent days, so probably a day off is needed.  In hindsight, maybe the second run yesterday wasn't such a good idea, although I did feel fine when I left home, so actually didn't think twice about it before I left.  Also, I did do a very small amount of DIY yesterday as I hung a couple of pictures, so maybe that's aggravated it slightly.  Annoying as I had a nice route planned!
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Big G-I think that's why rules need setting up as soon as possible as there will be more examples over time.If she identifies as female and wins DD,is anyone going to be brave enough to say "nope you're legally still male"?
Good idea not to run if you're not feeling great.
Managed a decent run today, rain went but still very sticky out, done 16 and felt good, could have done more but mother-in-laws birthday meal later so needed to get things done.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - some transgender stop short of surgery, by their own choice as they are happy to live their lives without taking that option. Some call themselves transgender when they've gone as far as they intend to.

Re the mixed relay, some mixed relays only require one female or maybe the race organisers were happy to accept the entry.

I've seen a few of the non binary gender on entries recently.

Two runs in one day is far too much, I would suggest no doubles for a few weeks.  No DIY either, phone a mate!

Ian - that's a decent distance especially in this high humidity, glad the achilles was OK.

Robert - update please on your injuries, hope you're OK.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Shades-Talking i9f doubles,I intended to do them after manchester but life got in the way,I'm hoping to do one now and again, how would you do it? I'm thinking 8 in morning then 6@MP in the evening or something like that, thinking being if I can do it as part of a double it's a good place to be,or would you recommend differently.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Ian - re doubles, yes that's fine.  You can shorten the distances if you wish. Also take into consideration what you have planned the following morning too, i.e. not ideal to follow with a long run next morning.  I think you'll find them quite easy to do.

Big G - I just looked at the Haldon relays and the mixed relay is at least one runner of each gender. Seems like they chose an ideal event.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
I need to start doing some doubles myself next month to push my mileage up as don't want to give up any of my morning classes.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Shades-I will usually do them on a Tuesday, and my long run will usually be Sunday or vice versa as they are my 2 days off. What would be the maximum you would suggest on double day, obviously I'll manage it depending on my Achilles but if it's fine.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Ian - maximum is up to you but don't be too ambitious when you start doing them.  I have done 10 in the morning followed by 5 in the evening and done that up to 3 days of the week, that certainly boosted my weekly mileage.  The few times I did 100 mpw I did that double combination 5 days of the week. I had to rest up quite a lot though, I was on holiday at the time.
  • just a quick check in and will read tomoorw

oTB that’s a cracking achievement at the weekend, well done for feeling so strong on the 2nd day! If you enjoyed the terrain and the scenery then you’ll love the centurion races. Let us know when you’re about I don’t do Panshanger that often usually do Westmill

Shades we can safely assume that I won’t feature in Julys races.

finally had the op today, seems to have gone okay.   find out more tomorrow

  • Big G/ Shades re the arrows, I too was a bit concerned as thought it was obvious, more concerning was they kept on asking if there were arrows?

Jelly that ice cream if defy laws of gravity

Big G Going to be tough one to manage without upsetting people. As it doesn't appear that there are set guidelines.  Saw something withing EA (was either vlm ballot or VLM volunteering Male is born at birth as a male and identify as a male Female is born as a female and idenify as female, but other/ prefer not to say would cover it.

Cal goo news no fracture, hopefully settled down with time off

Ian a memory from a marathon talk interview with Callum Hawkings (I think) was talking about back to back runs, he'd always to the session 1st and the 2nd run would be a pedestrian pace for him (I think he said 8 min miles) Obvs alot of stuff about Mo's and Kipchorge training paces have been mentioned recently all based on running slow.

recovering well, still, will speak with plastics later this morning hopefully to see what has been done and what that means.  The people working in the hospital are amazing, they stuff they go through is beyond me! Mind you walking an inch is beyond me!
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, yeah, no more doubles for now.  I did feel fine on Monday though and the combined runs were only 8.5 miles.  But in hindsight maybe a bit too much after Torbay Half.  I'm just keen to get back to it!  Also, the term "DIY" was a very elaborate description for just knocking a couple of picture hooks in, but I think that is a contributing cause of yesterday's discomfort.  Depressing!  Regarding the Haldon Relays, it does look like they picked a good event then.  It was a very strong team anyway!

Sorry Robert, but I had to chuckle at that image; I had visions of a team of specialists examining you, frantically searching for the arrows that were in plain sight.  Not funny I know, but really glad the op seems to have gone well.  Did you have to stay overnight then?

This is a sensitive subject, but the only reason Chairman says he is looking into this for the DD is because he knows the person concerned.  Also, this person is being very open about what they're doing, apparently with an Instagram page, as well as Strava etc.  But he's only looking into it because he knows the person involved, so not sure what would happen if an unknown runner turned up, identified and entered as female, and won a prize.  How could an RD go up to that person and challenge them - they couldn't really, could they!?  I know this is a very sensitive subject and I'm not suggesting wilful cheating or anything like that, but just thinking of a scenario that I suppose has happened at different events.  Basically, even if there is a third category, what if that person doesn't choose to use that category for whatever reason?

5-miles for me this morning, at just over 10min/miles.  I could easily have carried on, and was tempted to, but thought I'd be sensible and just do what I'd planned, after yesterday's relatively poor day.  Also, I'm seeing a friend for lunch and will be walking the 3-miles there and back again.  If I feel okay tomorrow I may attempt 7-8ish, or possibly the 10ish I had planned for yesterday.  The 10ish would involve probably a couple of miles of walking as some of it is off road and some of it is very steep.  I'll just see how I am tomorrow and decide from there.  I'm really keen to have a plan and get going with the mileage but I still need to be careful, so it's still taking it one day at a time.  The mind is saying "right, come on, get on with it now!" but the body still isn't quite allowing it!
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Robert - glad you're OK and the op is done.   Hope you make a speedy recovery and at least will be able to walk very soon.   How long are you likely to be off work for?

Big G - I've no experience of relays but I do remember seeing on telly a few times that in adventure races, for the mixed teams, it's common for the actual number of male/female not to be specified as long as there's at least one of each gender so just looked at Haldon to check.   I think that's done so that if one runner drops out it's not too hard to find a replacement.

Re the DIY, I know but it's often those silly little things that cause us injuries.

Re the transgender runner, Chair is doing the right thing to find out now so that in the future should the situation arise at any one of the club races the information is to hand, instead of everyone getting embarrassed and not knowing what to do.   I expect the runner concerned knows all the info, but it's having the opportunity to ask them without intrusion.

Glad you're back running again today, didn't take you long to recover from Torbay so you've still retained a lot of your fitness.   I see the race shirts are white, I don't expect you're pleased with that.   They look a bit flimsy in the photos I've seen.

Circuits for me today, different instructor just for this week, but was really good.

  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, I have to say, I did have a quick look down the list to see if they'd entered our Ladies 10k.  Pretty sure they'd have a very good chance of winning it judging from their Haldon time, but they're not on the list.

Regarding the Torbay shirt, as I was about 1-mile from the finish, YT was running back towards Torquay doing his cool down, and he was wearing the shirt.  We said "hi" and I noticed the shirt and immediately thought "Hmmm, I won't be wearing that one!".  I wore it home after the race but probably won't really wear it again.  Last year's medium was really tight around the neck on me, so I gave that one away.  Will probably do the same with this one.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - it might be that she doesn't want to enter races where there might be queries/controversy now.   Maybe in a while when RO's and runners become more used to the idea.

I saw YT's pics and my immediate thought was that 'Big G won't like that shirt'!

I put a load of race shirts in the recycle bin at Tesco today, such a waste, but even if they fitted I couldn't wear them all.   I've got some that I like and they're really good quality and last for years.

So the good news is that my foot is not fractured. The bad news is that I have shingles again. I noticed a sore spot on my bum (next to the sacrum) when I was lying down to do my stretches last night and so it was off to the docs again this morning.
If bad things come in threes then I guess I have my three.  Hopefully by the time this clears up, the other injuries will be a bit quieter.
  • Cal shingles again that’s crap! I’m hoping shit happens in 3s too glue injury, PF and knee.  You’ll get over it again and hope if gives you a fortunate break to help the others

    july looking bleak for races!

I had one booked and one planned, managed to transfer (two weeks before) to my mate maciek, I’ve told him I’m glad it will be used and don’t want anything for it, he’s a lovely friend I met through running and would feel offended if I didn’t take the money.

im back home, nhs staff were lovely from the contractor staff, receptionists, nurses through to the surgeons. the waiting times aren’t so welcome.

so i have a cast and crutches i can’t drive, I can’t crutch a mile to the bus top so off work for a bit, back next week to see what’s happening hopefully the cast can come off then.

apparently they took a big chunk out of my thigh to put over my knee which will cause me a few issues when I start up again.

i’ll contact Physio (private) when the cast is off and look at what we can do for strength work. Hope the time off give my PF time to heal
  • Ps I am shattered
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Rob-That sounds horrible, didn't realise it was that bad, good luck with it.
Big G-Slow and steady wins the race.
Cal-Bad luck on the shingles,if there's ever a good time to get ill it's now so make the most of the weather.
Usual 6 mile loop after work, was considering the seaside 5k,but it was a head wind tonight so couldn't be bothered with that.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
Ouch Rob, hope you recover quickly!
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Crikey Robert, take care of yourself!  Looks really bad :(

Sorry to hear about the shingles again Cal.  You're really not having a great time of it either :(

Shades, I'm the same with T-Shirts.  I tend to keep them until the drawer is bulging, and then I have a cull and send a large bag full to recycling.  I only have probably half a dozen or so that I actually wear regularly for running at any one time, and I do have maybe 3 or 4 different ones that I wear sometimes for day-to-day stuff.

Cal - oh no, not shingles again. Hope as you've noticed quickly that the meds will kick in promptly as they did last time.   Do you have a case for getting a vaccine as this happens every year for you?

Robert - you've certainly been through the wars, you look really pi$$ed off in that pic.  :s  Must be sore too, you've only got one limb without any bandages. Incredible the damage that can be done from a simple trip, you've really been unlucky.
If you like tennis, you can settle down and follow Wimbledon next week. ;)

6 miles today, my favourite hilly run out and back to a very pretty neighbouring village.  Humidity has lifted and lovely breeze.

Blimey Rob!!! That looks a really bad injury.. and to have a skin graft too  :o Sounds a bit of a feeble thing to say in the face of all that but look after yourself (())

OTB - Fabulous running from you, a massive well done. Great photo too.

Cal - Unbelievable that you've come down with shingles again.. is that normal? Does that mean you're really run down or something?

Jelly - Well done on your marathon.. and for eating the biggest ice cream I've ever seen!

Big G - Your shoulder seems to be improving which is excellent news, it's taking a long time though. Must be a relief to be running again.

Sorry if I've forgotten anything but I'm writing this in a bit of a rush and if I keep putting off posting I'll never get round to it.

Just a quick update from me. I took your advice Shades and have gone back to HR base training. It was a real struggle trying to build the mileage up when pretty much every run felt like a death march. I dug my Maffetone formula out and am now on week 2 of my mission. I pretty much walked most of the first week, my HR was averaging around the 140s and that was with minimal running!! I put it down to asthma (which seemed to be better but was still there), or a faulty HR monitor or a serious but as yet undiagnosed heart problem. Week 2 and things thankfully seem to be better, I am managing to do a bit more running but now it's so bloody hot my HR seems to be pretty much at its limit by the time I get to the letter box  :/ Anyway, onwards and upwards. At least I feel like I'm making some sort of progress.
