Mick, you obviously approached this race in a relaxed frame of mind and I'm sure you don't look back and regret you didn't push really hard. You met your target of maintaining a steady pace and you enjoyed the occasion. A success I'd say and 4th out of 14 runners is pretty good too.
  • Hello

    NZC
good to see you treading this board again :)
It must be mid winter for you and it is great to see that you can still bang out remarkable AG results despite doing no running!!

    Graham
good summing up of the NUFC situation. About the only good thing that can be said of the Ashley saga is that the club is still solvent. However the money that is going out in transfer fees & agents add ons nowadays is obscene and if TV money ever gets reduced then a lot of clubs will be in Dire Straits.

I id the last in capitals as I went to see Mark Knopfler in concert recently and he was excellent - a straight 2+ hours performance without an interval

    Alehouse
coming along very nicely the AG in parkruns will come down quite quickly as you seem to be hitting a consistent training platform - just make sure the over train doesn't come in and derail you - sorry that was a really bad punning metaphor  :)

    Dave
sorry to hear your are suffering from an ill defined lurgy too
well done to the family members for performing so well both individually and as a part of teams

    Welshpoppy
your training is moving onto a new high even with hay fever and heat!  Don't forget the cut back weeks when things are going so well

    Ray
well done on finding a parkrun. Big fields and 5K's don't really go together but now that you know what to expect you can go back and boost your time and AG

    Mick
nice to be able to run in such an event and enjoy the occasion. 1300 is a really big field for a 5K  so you probably did right by easing your way round in very even splits.

I did see you query about cadence some time back and looked at mine. It stays remarkably constant at 177-179 despite what the speed is - so my stride must shorten quiet a lot as I get tired!

I was very busy for a while which kept me away from here- not that I have much to report. Saw an endocrinologist who was worse than useless and I have been referred to a "specialist" endocrinologist for more discussion.  Keep getting asked whether it is my age and I keep referring them to my running stats to show the abrupt decline and ask them - "is that normal?"  They don't appear to like irrefutable facts!

Only brief "runs" of late - well "runs" is a relative turn of phrase as I seem to be on another downward spiral - last weeks hash was 6.2 miles over footpaths & fields and it finished me for 3 days.  I haven't managed >3 miles since

I suffered an appalling injury last evening - getting out of an armchair :(
My right patella locked and I could scarcely stand on that leg.  I thought it would ease off overnight but it hasn't. I suspect the ligament that tracks over the bone has slipped out of its groove and is locking the patella in place so I am going to have to put my feet up and watch the women's football.
It is actually a better watch than most men's nowadays as they spend a lot less time rolling around on the ground which means more football played and less cheating
  • WelshpoppyWelshpoppy ✭✭✭
Good to see you Torque :)

Blimey it is amazing how easy it is to have a non running related injury...rest up in the armchair.I am not a football fan wrong shape ball but looking forward to TDF although with Chris Froome not sure it will hold my attention.
    Sorry to hear about endocrinologist:-(

Mick: Well done on placing and race and that is a large field for 5k.

Dave: I am always up this early in summertime to beat the heat! ;)

No run yesterday I felt ill like sunstroke and spent most of day sleeping!

I will aim to go out today but no idea as yet if up to it!

Mick-tremendous numbers for a 5k.Easy to see why you enjoyed it surrounded by so many happy people.

Dave-Hope you are on the road to recovery.

TS-you certainly are having a trying time with your specialist. That is real bad luck getting injured like that.

Mick - thanks - not sure - but although it is "low level" (my description) , and I seem ok doing nothing , I'm finding exertion difficult. So, after the ill advised 9 on Sunday (you are quite right, alehouse), just did a lowkey gym session Monday - 15 mins easy spinning, and a circuit of the machines, each set at comfortable levels.  Yesterday I ventured out to the park, and 3 miles plod really felt tough (though it was quite warm). Rest today , other than a 25 minute "purposeful" walk  :/

well done on your 5K, Mick - sensibly executed. . .

TS - welcome back - endocrinologist encounter sounds frustrating . . .  how is your knee today?

(Rip Van) WP  ;)  -  hope the sleeping did the trick . . .

Ray - nice 400's - well paced too, after the zippy opener . . .

Ray: Good session again it makes me tired just thinking about it :)

Dave: I hope the purposeful walk went well as did the refueling of liquid nectar :) well done on 3 miles I am sure it will come back quicker than you think.

Yesterday 4 miles in 40.24 which my legs sulked until half way.Today same course 39.20
    10.10
    9.02
    10.22

    TS,
Definitely don't like the sound of your knee issue. I have heard of it before but never experienced it. Common problem in dogs.
Your experience with cadence is the opposite of mine, my stride length increases as my cadence drops.

    Dave,
It will be interesting to see if your fatigue disappears when the temperature and humidity does.
We have very high temperatures around here at the moment, 34c with high humidity and I have found that I cannot tolerate the high humidity anymore. Once upon a time it never bothered me.

    WP,
    Looks good to me.

    Graham,
No regrets I really enjoyed myself with a very rapid recovery. The 70s are an interesting time of life.

The weather here is extreme so forced indoors today.

Treadmill felt very good despite humidity

Dave: 10 miles is 10 miles you will be able to build up soon we just need you 100%

Well I maybe in good shape but it did not reflect in race yesterday.

    Porthcawl 10k

First running of the race a few things they need to work on for next year 4,000 runners is a lot for a small place.Getting out of car park was slow with people trying to jump the queue so it took us 20 minutes to leave car park.

They delayed start for 30 minutes this was after I had eaten banana, loo stops and warm up mile! it was 26 degrees so not ideal the delay was the traffic  still runners arriving late.

So as line up in my pen I knew Plan A was out of window , onto Plan B just get around at all cost's.I hate heat and struggle with it.I start of okay but each mile I get slower and slower I was so glad at half way to see a water station and grab a bottle this helped to cook me down. The support from locals were amazing lots of signs, people giving out sweets, water and waving flags and cheering us all it was pretty amazing.I struggle with mile 5 especially when I thought it was mile 6!! any way soon enough we hit the prom with half a mile to go thank goodness! it is all over no idea of time till I finished.Water, medal and top and I wind my way through the people to get back to car and home.

Time 58.37 chip time 4 minutes slower than planned time
    8.43,9..02,9.24,9.27,8.52,9.25,8.40...for 0.26
    32nd out of 196 over 50's
    417 out of 1725 women
    1519 out of 3378 finishers.

It was very congested on course it took till mile 4 to spread out a little.I think it needed 2 or 3 waves I was in pen 2 and they could not get everyone in the pens .there were 3 more pens behind me.

Back to normal today and see what the legs want to do:-)

TS, what a freakish knee injury. I hope it's better. Who would have thought getting out of a chair could be so dangerous!

Ray, very good series of 400s. You're going well, unlike a few of us here....

Dave, very frustrating for you to be so below par. You'll come back stronger after the enforced break.

Mick, forced indoors in the summer as well as the winter. It certainly is an extreme climate where you are.

Welshpoppy, that's a very large field for a 10K and the planning needs to be improved by the sound of it. You ran well and I'm sure a lot of the four minutes you were short of expectations can be put down to the very hot weather and a congested course. You certainly needn't be discouraged. I too enjoy following the Tour. Very disappointing that Cav isn't there as well as Crash Froome.

I did a parkrun on Saturday I'd only done once before. It's an almost flat and uncongested two-lap route near the Tyne a few miles upstream from Newcastle. Reasonably satisfied with 25:55 at this stage of my training but a little quicker would have been nice.
  • Ray A2Ray A2 ✭✭✭
Welshpoppy, good going to overcome the heat and delayed start, not ideal preparation with a large field.Maybe not the time you were after but another one done is always good.

Graham, pretty sure you will be lowering that time soon.

Battersea Park 5k race for me last night. This is a totally flat fast two lap course.Weather conditions were absolutely ideal so no excuses.Like Hyde park there are a lot of fast men and women so I place myself a few rows back.My aim was to run sub 23mins if possible.Well I managed a time of 22:19 to get 1st MV70 and a nice little medal and a Peach.Quite happy with my pacing, but to be honest I latched onto a younger guy in front.
  • morning all

    Dave
..if it's any consolation you did 90% more miles than I did last week :)  So probably not!

    Welshpoppy
that sounded like one congested race situation - you did well to get such good finishing positions relative to the various fields - time becomes almost inconsequential when faced with the problems you had.

I too have hay fever problems - it really helps living opposite a hay field, (not!!).  I did reduce my sensitivity by using local honey for several years. Unfortunately the producer, who did it from her back garden, has now moved away taking her hives with her so I can't get the stuff any more.

    Mick
nice to know I share something with dogs - apart from my wet nose when suffering from hay fever!
So two/three weeks ago you couldn't go outside because it was too cold/wet and now you can't go outside because it's too hot!!

    Ray
cracking time for a 5K. Nothing wrong with tailing a younger runner and is only surpassed by overtaking him with 20m to go in a sprint finish :)
A peach is an unusual prize :) Nice to get a medal for your first place in the V70s

    Graham
good time for your parkrun - where was it held?
Never a dull moment in the life of a Toon supporter. very disappointed to see Perez go - a quality player who was not always appreciated by supporters.
The Benitez saga has been a bit too glib from the Benitez side  - reading between the various statements it looks like he had an offer from China for mega bucks some time ago, put it in his back pocket in negotiations with Ashley and said "give me an extra £4 million a year"
When it was rebuffed he ran his contract down and then promptly skipped off to China the day after it expired spinning the tale of budgetary control to keep him looking good in supporters eyes.
Or I may just be cynical...........................

Knee is mending - I tried a 1 mile loosener on Saturday after having stretched, massaged and taped it for a week and it was still a bit stiff and unresponsive but it settled down afterwards so I am going to walk the Hash this evening as its a new pub venue :p.  It will be good to see folk running back to me for a change

Torque: Great to see you back you have been missed and we all wanted you back running.Enjoy the hash tonight and the liquid refreshments:-)

Thank you for all thoughts on race much appreciated it was the biggest race I have run this year as most are under 400 runners.I have another in Barry in August same organiser's so I imagine the same issues. But Sunday it is 250 runners but hilly and warm.It may very well be September's last 10k be the one I get a good race with weather:-) At least i am getting weekly speed session's.

Ray, that's a brilliant time. I make it 79% AG. Well done on being first and you must have been competitive in M60 and M65 groups too.

TS, good news about your knee. The park run was Prudhoe Riverside, which starts half a mile or so east of the bridge to Ovingham. I agree about Perez, who I'll miss. Not quite so cynical about Rafa and reckon he would have stayed in different circumstances.

Great racing, Ray! That will put you around the top 20 in the country I think!

Good progress GL! I know each course is different but that seems a considerable improvement from around 6 weeks ago, which is not a long time!

TS: cynical about Newcastle, surely not! And GL as well...I'm happy with the Newcastle situation: most Leicester fans are happy to get Perez!

Good news on health improvements from TS and Birch! Keep on heading the right way please...little by little!

Struggling a little here with another niggle: did something to my hip/glute area getting out of the car going to do my stretches on Sunday! Cut yesterday's run short as I couldn't push off going up inclines, and it was also uncomfortable turning corners. A bit better today I think after beating it into submission with spiky ball, wobble cushion and foam rollers! Supposed to be racing Thursday but at present will just run easily.

Ray, wow, that's a quality field at both ends of the age range.

alehouse, like TS, another annoying non-running related injury. I get in and out of cars like an even older man than I am to try to avoid slight pulls but sometimes you just can't help it. At least yours is a bit better and sensible not to push things too hard on Thursday.

nice spot - and good to see parkrun spreading out.  I got an email from parkrun asking me to sign up to pay £3/month to keep parkrun "free for ever" which I thought to be a bit tautologous!!

    Ray

    Welshpoppy
very consistent mileage after your race - you are going along really well

Well I was stood there last night with my running gear on and thought I may as well give it a little go so I very gently eased round 4 miles with just a touch of "power" walking now and then in some lovely countryside and river banks
Very, very humid night so I did need liquid at the end and some Saltaire blonde helped. Unfortunately as I was driving only one pint was not enough and I then switched to Heineken 00 alcohol free lager - which tasted quite good going down but left a fairly unpleasant aftertaste - not something to be repeated!

London on business tomorrow and then we are off to Maderia for 10 days at the weekend.  Big question is do I pack my running shoes................. or indeed will I be allowed to :) ?

Good to see you NZC, but sorry to hear of your health worries: hope it comes to nothing. And a great cricket final in prospect!

An "easing back into it 6" is my long run, Birch! Good standard in depth at Donny!

So, pinned a number on this evening, although nearly didn't for all sorts of reasons...and wondered why I had pre-race and during! Hip and glute have been a pain all week, and there was a thunderstorm of mammoth proportions a couple of hours before the off. this stopped before Noah appeared but I suspect it was a close run thing. The warm up in full wet suit was spent working out which puddles to avoid; there were so many that the course resembled a cross country race in parts, despite being almost entirely road apart from a short section of gravel. Set off slightly further up the field tonight and was into my running more quickly. Gradually picked off a few runners and around half way it became clear that Ray's time from Monday would be under threat! Motivation indeed! Splits were reasonably consistent I think and managed a decent finish on the track whilst attempting to break 22. I failed, with 22:02 on my watch, but then remembered it was chip timed (am not used to that!) and clocked 21:52 for third M65 with an age grading of 76.71%. So you are ahead on that count, Ray! 278th out of 601 finishers. It was rather busy! Hopefully more to come if I can avoid any more derailments.
Progress is rarely a straight line. There are always bumps in the road, but you can make the choice to keep looking ahead.
