  • Great 5,000m there Stevie (you have to start to be a track snob now and refer to track races in metres and not kms). I cannot agree with 0054 over the other distances: 800 and 1,500m races feel much tougher than 3,000 and 5,000m. It is only when you get up to 10,000m is it that the number of laps gets too hard.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
I think 3000 is my favourite distance. The 800 and 1500 are for the specialists but coming to them new I find them quite thrilling.
  • The 800 is thrilling as you actually get to start on the start/finish line. The 3,000 and 5,000 are 7.5 and 12.5 laps respectively and I find it a bit odd being out on the far corner of the track to start a race: almost seems apologetic. I used to race both 3,000 and 5,000 and the 3,000 probably has the edge for me as well. The 5,000 almost has three phases: go out hard, the middle bit holding on and then come home hard whereas the 3,000 seems to miss the middle bit and goes from hard out to hard home.

I may try a 3000m (there you go PMJ :) ) but I feel it would be too short for me! Would be good to go sub 10 though and there is a monthly one in Coventry.

Straight into marathon training following Saturdays race, so 6m and 4m recoveries on Sunday/Monday and then 15m last night. Torrential rain from start to finish so pushed the pace on to try and reduce the time in it. Average pace of 7.33 for 142BPM. Managed to keep the average HR below 145 for 12/15 miles which was the plan. Good to open to legs up but wouldn't want to run them at that effort every week
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
Sub 10 is where it's at Stevie ,😚
  • DT19DT19 ✭✭✭

Excellent 5000m result, Stevie, you are progressing well.

Great 800m, OO. Incidentally the v55 winner of Saturdays 10k (and I think 4th pace) was 35.xx. He runs for the same club as Nicko and Jools. That is some going!!

SBD- fingers crossed you get a place somewhere. Is Bournemouth still open for entries?

Like Stevie I have not had much rest since Saturday with 7m sunday, 4m and spin Monday and 14m last night in the most torrential rain I can recall running in. I ran it at around my usual long race pace (8.09) and my hr was also on the low side at 136. The conditions probably helped in that respect.

4m recovery this morning completes july at 174. Basically averaging 10m per week less than mara training. Strange as it doesn't really feel like i'm doing that much and adding 10m per week wouldn't be that big a push.

Good base building and maintenance there, DT. Hope you dried out OK after the downpour. Nice to run in those conditions once in a while, feels like an adventure.

Just a 5 mile steady for me last night. Really can't get my glutes and hammies firing. Everything feels stiff and hurts at the back of the legs. A rest day today with some foam roller and glute specific exercises. Also planning my first ever lake swim if I can finish work in time.

Just 100 miles for July but only 6 runs!  :D
  • July done.

183.36 miles in 25:36:48 hours at an average pace of 8:23 per mile. When I logged it I noticed my best July was 184 miles so maybe should have run an extra mile to break that.

Did my long run today as I am off on holiday on Friday and will probably run but the South West Coastal Path is pretty but slow and does not encourage long runs. Today was just inside 1:40 for 13 miles and that is the first time I have done that in training for many years.

My aim for 2019 is 2019 miles and I am currently about 50 miles up on target so that buffer means I only need about 120 miles in August as it is busy with holidays and work trips.

  • DT19DT19 ✭✭✭
I'm on 1327 for year, which leaves 692 over 5 months, averaging 138. I'm 150 ahead of schedule however August will be low with a 2 week holiday. Though 4 months at 170 Sept-Dec would pretty much get me there.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
About 1400 miles for me. I think this year will see a slight fall. I've been increasing year on year setting new records for the last 4-5 years but have deliberately tried to reduce this year and replace the runs with swimming.
Good luck with the lake swim GDawg, you are braver than me.

Good monthly totals.  I managed 321 for July and am on 2,043 year to date.  Unchartered territory for me but the main thing is to avoid injury over the next few months.

Sounds like you need a bit more recovery time post RTTS G-D - hopefully back to normal soon.

Excellent track work from OO (congratulations on the PB and AC victory) and Stevie (that's a big improvement on the PB and I'm sure there's lots more to come).

Some good mid-week MLRs from DT, Stevie and PMJ.  13.1 miles for me tonight at an average 7:24 pace, with the HR averaging 140bpm.  All feeling nice and easy with the pace picking up at the end for a 6:38 penultimate mile.

Have a confirmed place at Yorkshire Marathon in October.  If I get offered a place at Abingdon I'll take this instead but otherwise Yorkshire it is.  At least I now have a confirmed target race four weeks in to the marathon training!

Loved the lake swim tonight!! My first open water session.
Pitched up and handed in the medical form I'd completed before arrival, bought a swim cap and hired a wetsuit as a one off to discover what size I am and see how it felt. Then had to do a short 50m test in the water so an observer was confident I wouldn't drown.

Passed the test and set off. There are 2 courses laid out,  a 400m and a 750m. Went for the 400 first as a test to make sure I felt OK and didn't drown. Felt confident so kept going and did 2 x 750m loops.

It felt great not having to hit a pool wall and go back down a lane, just keep going and work on your stroke uninterrupted. The buoyancy in the suit was noticable and breathing felt easier. With my bright orange swim cap I felt streamlined as I took it easy on the water and concentrated on just doing the distance.

Sighting was an issue, I lost the marker buoys on a few ocassions, especially as the sun went down behind them but I soon got the hang of checking the course every few strokes.

Funniest part was when I looked up to find a duck crossing my path, looking at me like I was some sort of weirdo!

Only did 43 mins as I didn't want to overdo my first session and time was getting on. Got 1.25 miles done, my biggest ever swim. Went ghrough 1 mile in 35 mins, 3 mins faster than my recent pool PB for the mile.

Totally loved it, such a nice way of swimming. Will buy a wetsuit and be back for more. Very confident I can do the 2 miles in the Swim Serpentine event in September to complete that challenge as well as earn the London Classics medal for doing the swim, the marathon, and the Ride 100 mile cycle.

    And...I didn't drown!!  :D
  • SBD, that Good for Age at Yorkshire seems to be quite good but it is pretty much under the radar. It is good it is open so late for an autumn 2019 race.

Stevie that's a stellar debut. Chapeau.
OO still not bad for an old fella.
  • Tokyo Marathon entries open today if anyone is interested, just applied myself; nice Boston warmup   :D
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
Monster miles SBD and great to have a target.
Great feedback on the swim GDawg, I noticed how fast you swam and wondered how you found it. You've pretty much caught up to my swim pace on just a few weeks!
    Tokyo, uhm interesting Nicko 😉
  • Leslie HLeslie H ✭✭✭
Stevie cracking race time well done.
SBD 2000 mile already you are clocking the miles these days ! and nice speedy 13.
G-dawg soon be a triathlete by the sound if it.

121m for the month and 592m for the year so far.

Tues was 2x200/2x400/2x800/2x400/2x200m with 70 secs rest a tough but enjoyable session and starting to feel some fitness coming back.

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
Nicko I've entered the Tokyo ballot 😁
  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭
OO - the swim was easier than I thought but then again I had done a few miles in the lido to get ready for it. The suit buoyancy definitely helped but the main thing I liked was being able to work on my stroke unrestricted by lanes or pool ends.

There were a couple of times when I got my body rotation right where I could feel a real sensation of speed as the water whizzed past. Felt good.
Having a destination to aim for, rather than the end of a pool also seemed to help.

I still think you're quicker than me as the buoyancy and streamlining of the wetsuit certainly helps.
Ordered my own wetsuit last night and will try and swim for an hour on the next session.
I definitely feel it will be my new summer cross-training sport, just a once a week fix.
I certainly will give a triathlon a go too.

Great mileage, SBD and good shout on Yorkshire. It's a nice event and good course.

Leslie, 121 for July is a decent uplift given your years total.

Tokyo is appealing but something that is outside my prospects whilst the kids ate young.

I tried to do a 7m tempo at mp last night having gone out on the beers and for a curry the night before. i could tell in the warm up it wasnt on so just went out at 7.10s. Felt awful first 4 miles, probably more the prospect of how mych more was to be done. Was able to pick it up a little in last 3  to 6.50s so averaged 7.02. Had i not been hungover that would have been a top end easy run. Aeribically it didnt entail much effort at all.

Up for 5k recovery this morning, now sat in departure lounge waiting on a flight to join family in lanzarote for weekend.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
Wet suit is my Xmas list GD but I am a cheapskate so no panic.
I'll be hitting my local parkrun tomorrow for a last fast blast before a 10k race next Tuesday. LSR Sunday but I'll be lucky to scrape 40 this week.
  • Chances of getting into Tokyo are so small I don't hold out much hope; however need to start applying for everything anyway if I'm ever going to get that 6 star medal.

Stevie - great track racing; smashing it as usual.
OO - fantastic pace on the shorter stuff; hardly worth turning up just to run for a couple of minutes though
Fantastic mileage totals from PMJ, DT, OO and ridiculous from SBD  - I'm not going to look at mine, will be embarrasing!
Good tempo attempt despite the hangover DT - enjoy the holiday.

Ticking over this week with progression on Monday and track last night - achilles and calf playing up a bit so mindful of doing quality over quantity to start with. Did manage my apparently best 200m effort during some 250s last night at 30s so that was nice.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
30 secs is blistering pace Nicko- you should definitely try 800m 😉
  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭
Good luck with the Tokyo ballot, Nicko. I was going to chance it but then I was reminded that the race is the day before my youngest's 21st birthday. After New York, I'll just need Tokyo to get the 6 stars medal.

Chose my finish line option and travel preference yesterday for new York. Going for the finish line poncho option and the Midtown bus transfer. Selected the 6.00am bus rather than the 5.30am as after hearing what OO said last year, I don't want to be cold atvthe start area for.too long.

    Hello All.

Interesting discussion about preferred track distances. I was a 400M and 300H guy in HS/college. Ran the 800 once in HS and felt lost. Did cross country mainly my last 3 years of HS to get in shape for wrestling and track. Hated it. Each race I would say to myself (about 400M into the race) "why am I doing this!" My wife did marathons when we met in our early 20s and I said "you're crazy, I'll never run that far." Fast forward in time and I have a few marathons done and sit at 1538 miles on the year. Who says we can't change?;) Addiction is a powerful thing (to running, endorphins, other factors, all of above?)

Great running going on here. And good luck to those coming back or waiting to return to action.

I'm on a bit of a long build up for my October marathon (Baystate). I started doing 2 subLT runs  (13 milers with 10 at roughly MP) per week back in April. And started adding proper long runs in June. I've been 2 wks on and 1 wk off since then. LRs have been 4 x 20m and 2 x 17 during on weeks. Been 3 years since my last marathon (or any race). Have run 3:09 at this particular race a couple of times (14' and 15') and 3:13 in '16 (coming off two kidney stone surgeries so was happy with that one). So far my MP stuff has been up and down. Some runs are like they were a few years ago and others are a bit slower. Hoping to get another gear down the stretch but wonder if I may be cooking the cake for too long. Regardless, has been challenging to be this regimented again but also very rewarding (have lost about 10 lbs too). But had forgotten how much time it takes to log 60-70 miles per week and balance everything else in life. But foot never tastes better and clothes never fit better than during the peak of marathon trainingB) .

VTR great to see you back at it and in a campaign again
0054 not too shabby a time and we always want more !

Did the Dark hedges half marathon today in a time of 1:49
The course seems to have changed a bit since I did it in 2017 and it is now a proper hill fest with what seemed like 12 miles of mostly climb and 1 mile of downhill in the middle whizzing past all the tourists at the "dark hedges " many of whom were clapping and cheering! Magic ! but unfortunately I have done no hill training at all so it was going to be a very tough day and its was 20c
Started of at around 8 m/m pace and stayed there as long as I could with a 7:44 at mile 8 downhill then the pace slowly dropped away as I was running out of gas with an 8:48 last mile and nearly walked at mile 10 and mile 12 but just managed to keep going. Quite a few who went out too hard walking after halfway , no sprint finish as had nothing left at all and when I got home had to have a 2hr kip to recover .
New Nike zoom pegasus 36's arrived today for when I got home as my 35's are well worn now .

Good racing Fellas. Leslie, that race sounds like a gut check event. Challenging but rewarding. Nice effort to the end (and great pic!). Sounds like you left it all out there. OO, I wish I had a bit of your speed. Am really impressed with your strong season of "fast."

20M today. Low back did not have fun, but good energy and pace. 66M for the week. More hay in the barn. Day off tomorrow (and a visit to the PT, which my body will thank me for!).
