Schoolboy error Gul you need a proper watch that measures pool lengths 😂
Garmin 735 XT for example. Got mine on eBay for £160 a year ago.
My next 5k is tomorrow evening on the quay at Newcastle. My wife is in the B race starting 30 mins later so I'll problaby run both and pace her.
I got the gfa confirmation too Gul, which is always a relief.

VTR hope the hip settles again soon
    GUL nice cross training.
0054 enjoy the 5k double tonight.

8x400m after work last night, most just over 6 m/mile pace part from the second which  came in at 5:45 and the last which was a struggle and much slower than the others. A bit difficult to sleep after that !

Hi everyone, I haven’t been near the forum for months so thought I’d let you all know I’m back running (slowly). I’ve had a hard time after my back and hip injuries which has taken its toll mentally. I’ll not go into too much detail on the forum but I’ve been off work and I’m being treated for depression and anxiety. Going from running 10 miles average a day, to no running, really hit me hard.

I’m back at work now and on the road to recovery. I’m off on holidays next week to Spain which will help too.

My fitness has totally gone and it’s almost like starting running from scratch again. I’ve been running my local Parkruns in around 21 minutes, so pretty much 1 min/mile slower than at peak. I haven’t managed a single mile yet anywhere near my Berlin Marathon 6:24 m/m pace!

It is good to finally be running without pain again. I was stupid and tried to come back far too early and only made things worse. The Doctor has advised I don’t run the way I used too, so I’m keeping to lower mileage now. I’m still determined to reach 100 marathons/ultras though. I’ll run when I can, walk when I must and crawl if I have to!

I ran a marathon a couple of weeks ago and it was a hard slog. I had to pick up the pace at the end to finish in 3:47, which is exactly an hour slower than my PB at Berlin. How the mighty have fallen. Next up for me will be a 50k on Sunday which will be my 84th mara/ultra.

I’m off to read back a bit. It’s great to see all the familiar names posting. :)

Welcome back BB. I’m really sorry to hear you’ve suffered from anxiety and depression following the injuries benching you. I wonder whether the running kept symptoms at bay all this time or whether suddenly not running triggered the conditions? I do know there’s a high incidence of mental ill-health amongst the elite ultra-running community. I wonder if  the mindset of the extreme ultra-runner is commonly aligned with those dealing with mental health challenges. These are wide-ranging from anxiety and depression (Jim Walmsley) to eating disorders (Amelia Boone). I hope you are able to examine what’s underlying your challenges and emerge from it stronger and more content than ever. Perhaps more Badbark than Madbark, as has been suggested, may be the way forwards. My years away from running through various injuries (inc two ankle surgeries) has certainly led to much introspection and self realisation. What we all gain from running, whether or not there is a diagnosed mental illness, is a deeper meaning in life and I wish you lots of luck in coming back to it happier than ever.

PS This article caught my eye because it references a therapist, William Pullen, who offers psychotherapy through movement (Dynamic Running Therapy). Willam now has a free App that means you can access his therapy without seeing him. https://www.runultra.co.uk/Articles/December-2017/Running-and-depression

OO - my basic model will do just fine :) Hope you and Mrs OO have a good 5k.
Leslie - can't imagine doing a session like that after work! Nice one.
    MsE - wise words.
This morning I did my first double digit run since the "injury" - 12 easy miles.
  • JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭
8.5 soggy miles with strides for me.  Just had a sports massage and so a late start in chambers today (but I find my boss - me - is pretty flexible about these things).
  • SBD - one of the guys in my club has an Abingdon spot available if you are still looking? I'll private message you his number.

Badbark  - good to hear from you and excellent news you are running again, and doing "lower mileage" with just a mara and ultra  :D Sorry to hear that the lack of running took its toll on your mental health; hope that you can get consistent again and get to a better place mentally and physically.

Not much going on here; plodding away and just about sticking with the diet plan - full weigh in and body comp scheduled for Saturday after a visit to Cardiff Parkrun so hopefully see some improvement both in physique and pace on that day.

nicko - still after the Abingdon entry, thanks for making the connection, if you want to pm me the detaiIs I can sort out.  Hope the diet plan is working.

15 MLR scheduled for today.  Currently sat at work, struggling for motivation.  Can someone please give me a virtual kick ...

Thanks nicko - received and actioned.  York would have been nice, but I have fond memories of Abingdon and the race day logistics (I'm less than an hour's drive away) are a lot simpler.

Due to the lack of thread of encouragement, I had to resort to drastic measures to get myself out the door tonight.  So, 1 glass of wine for completing the run, 2 glasses if the average pace was better than 7:45 and 3 glasses if I could come in under 7:30.  As usually happens, once out the door the legs felt fine and raring to go.  However, a 7:07pm departure for a 15 mile run was probably a bit optimistic in terms of daylight hours and the last few miles, on unlit country roads, had to be completed in less than ideal conditions.  The average pace came in at 7:35 but I decided that battling the last few miles through the darkness had earned me the third glass!

Glad you've got your race to focus on SBD.
Good run at the quayside 5k tonight. 17:41 is s seasons best and held on to my V55 title. Mrs OO cried off with the rain which was a shame.

Well done SBD. The evenings are drawing in now and it does creep up on you!

    Bit of a read back:

BB - wishing you well with everything. Keep posting. Runners come and go over the years, but running itself, and other methods of spending quality outdoor time, are always waiting to welcome us back.

Leslie - the hedges look fab in GoT, no doubt with a bit of CGI - what a great place to run.

Lorenzo - did you get to the Terracotta Army? One of the world's greatest ancient sites.

As for liquid/powdered meals, I'm really surprised to learn of so many runners using them. Clearly out of touch as I thought this sort of thing was generally the domain of seriously overweight people. I take the points about nutritional balance, ease of use etc but can this really be as good as "real" food?

CC - good mileage efforts, I think you will cane it at whatever distance you choose

OO have you had the kayak out in the Lakes this summer?  Thinking of going up next week but I suspect the rivers may be a bit high in places with all the rain.

Other than that, well done with the GFAs and good running all round.

Nothing much to report here, still waiting/hoping to see a specialist, don't dare run or jog. I tailwalked at Park Run last week, it was surprisingly good fun to go round at the back and gain a prestigious new PW of 54 minutes.  Some of the back-of-the-pack stories of endeavour and determination to get fit were very impressive.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
Poor kayaking year for me so far Poacher. Wise words as ever👍
  • Gul DarrGul Darr ✭✭✭
Jools - good soggy miles :)
nicko - hope all goes well on Saturday.
SBD - that's one way of finding motivation. Job done.
OO - great performance - that's a cracking time! Did you still do the b race as a warm-down?
Poacher - hope you get to see the right specialist soon. Keep hanging on in there.
Another 30 min swim today - felt a tad harder than Tuesday's session, maybe because of yesterday's 12 miler or maybe it was just a tad faster. Feeling very proud of Miss GD the younger today who has had her place confirmed at York Uni - just waiting to hear the details of her results after she has opened them with her friends.
  • PoacherPoacher ✭✭✭
Nice one Gul! - presumably you guided her towards York because the uni campus is the race HQ for the Yorkshire marathon...you'd better sign up.

OO get that boat out.  A decent upper body workout, and the rhythm of a self-powered water craft is so relaxing.

SBD - well done on the mlr, Abo place noted. I'll save you a place on the sub3 train. Its about time we shared a few paces together, we keep missing each other at Worthing.

No Gul I went to the pub instead ;)
Poacher will not be shocked to hear this...

Happy to catch the Sub 3 train at Abingdon TR but I get the feeling you will be on the Sub 2:55 or Sub 2:50 train!  Will be good to hello at least.

Well done to your daughter Gul - you must be very proud.

Hope you can get back running soon Poacher.

Well done on the 5K result OO, the AC win and the SB.  So no plans for an Autumn marathon?

13K recovery tonight with 10 sets of 100m strides.  Have been missing some of the stride sessions in previous campaigns due to fear of aggravating background niggles but am making a conscious effort to get them completed this campaign.

SBD impressive wine fueled 15 there , motivation comes from wherever you can find it !
0054 anything starting with a 17 for 5k is very fast indeed, ageing like a fine wine unlike most of us !
Poacher game of thrones has brought many tourists the only down side is the coaches they arrived in were parking on the ancient tree roots as the road is narrow and damaging them then they fall down  in the winter in the storms , motor vehicles are banned now but as the road is still open its not being fully obeyed by some ! Beautiful place for sure , glad you are getting a parkrun in even if its a pw as the bench isn't much fun as we all know .
GUL congrats to miss GD on her results.

45 min club tempo tonight 7:26, 7:34, 7:29, 7:01, 7:26, 7:35 which is as fast as I've gone in a long time , mile 4  I thought I was catching another club runner far ahead which I was for a while.. (I was wrong lol!) and the last 2m were quite a struggle to keep the pace up after that ...totally whacked at the end and almost 10m in total.
  • Gul DarrGul Darr ✭✭✭
    SBD - very diligent.
Leslie - another good session; maybe you'll catch that runner next time :)
10 steady miles this morning. Off to a wedding reception after work and staying over night so that's possibly it for the week (30 miles and 2 swims).

Nice steady miles Gul - enjoy the wedding.

Excellent tempo session Leslie - was that on the track?

Tempo session for me tonight - on the treadmill so at least I stayed dry.  Is it just me or does anyone else get stressed before a tempo session wondering if they'll be able to hit the right pace and last the distance!  12 miles in total with the middle 10K tempo in 39:19.  A bit of a mental struggle, but avoided a break and good to have ticked off.

Just Sunday's 22 mile LSR to stress about now ...
  • Leslie HLeslie H ✭✭✭
    GUL enjoy the break.
SBD It was on the pavement , and yes big tempo's when I was looking to hit paces could be stressful as many a time I just couldn't get the numbers coming off shifts .Great effort on the treadmill id catch fire long before 10k at that pace with the heat build up , the dreadmill belt must have been like a wet road !

    5 recovery last night.

This is a very lazy c+p from the sub-3 thread.  Sorry!

Two Tunnels 10k for me.  Short report: 40.40 so a bit meh, although it was more of a tempo run than a race, so maybe not quite so meh.

Longer report: I hadn't done this race before and the course looked fairly fast, so worth a try.  It's a curious event, in that they have lots of different races going off at 10 minute intervals (the course is narrow, so you are started in groups of 100-150 runners).  Today they had on offer 5ks, 10ks, half-marathons, marathons and a 50km race.  My 10k was the 10th race of the day and so there were a fair number of runners out on the course of varying speeds, plus various dog-walkers and cyclists using the Two Tunnels path.  Running in the tunnels was slightly disconcerting, because the lighting wasn't as strong as I expected, which made it really hard to guess at your pace:effort ratio.  I was overtaking quite a lot of people, but after about 4.5/5km I don't think I was overtaking many people in my own race!  Effort-wise it didn't feel flat out (thank god!): sort of midway between 10k and half marathon pace, at a guess.  I've got the Cardiff 10k in 2 weeks' time and that will give me a better sense of where I am.  Hopefully sub 40 with people to chase!

A strange race Jools but a good marker to lay down in advance of the Cardiff 10K.

Good recovery miles Leslie.  The treadmill belt is not normally too bad but my clothing is usually drenched after the dreadmill tempo sessions!

Late afternoon LSR for me, so getting out at 4pm.  Still quite windy with a bit of rain towards the end.  Decided it was a good day for a 24 miler.  Set off on my flat course with the legs feeling pretty strong and picked up the pace over the last 5 miles.  3:01 for the 24 with the last 5 at 7:09 pace.

Gives me 83 miles for the week.  Not feeling too drained, so hopefully can keep up the mileage over the next two weeks.

That’s very impressive SBD. I only managed 16 plod miles today and 41 for the week with 2 hours of swimming (6km). I also passed 1500 miles for the year this week, which is a decent milestone.
Ive got very little planned in the coming weeks so just ticking over nicely- I could fancy a marathon before the end of the year but nothing booked.
  • Leslie HLeslie H ✭✭✭
Jools not too bad for a meh race , you will be sub 40 again very soon.
SBD very strong 24 miler looking good for sub 3 again.
    0054 decent week there.

8m on sat and 6m last night both after work giving another 40 miler week with hopefully a 10k race on Wed.
