  • JB, thanks. Your run today sounds a bit like a fartlek workout.
750 pressups today with more to come, that is amazing!!! I  did 20 this morning and thought that was good. I've started doing more exercises including yoga. I'm nowhere near as flexible as I once was☹
When I lived in Surbiton as a teenager, I used to watch Richmond rugby club. They were taken over years ago, but I can't remember who by.
I watched the ladies cup final this afternoon, Manchester City v Everton. I'm very impressed by how much the ladies game has improved. The same with cricket.
  • HS, fartlek in the sense of random bursts of speed  is spot on. This used to be hugely fashionable but these days I get the impression that people tend to be far more structured in terms of intervals? I defer to you on this as I am confident that you have far more insight into training than me.
I managed the 1000! I did them in batches of 50 at first but then 40 and finally a whole load of 25s. I did my last 25 in front of Mrs JB at 9.00 just as the TV series we’ve been watching, Hugh Laurie very good, started. Her comment after I grunted through number 1000 was that ‘I thought you were meant to straighten your arms’. Off to see a solicitor specialising in divorce this morning!
  • JB, I think you might be correct in saying that fartlek is not as common as in the past, but believe that it is still an important tool in the serious runners tool box.
Very well done for completing 1000 pressups! That is amazing, especially if you haven't been building up to it gradually, in the way we up our mileage in running.

Did an enjoyable forest 10k this morning with the Monday gang. Making the most of the bubble before Thursday, when we will only be able to run in pairs. We ran a course that we had run before, navigating with my Garmin where I had synced the route. It worked well with an arrow and an alert advising which way to turn,  and an alert if we ran off course.
  • hillstrider: Think 28:15 is a pretty good time in those conditions. I'd be very happy with that. Sounds like a nice run that you had today too. That Garmin sounds like a decent piece of kit.
JB: 1000 press ups!!! and that was just part of his routine. What was his name. I'd be interested to read up on him. Might have a go at that challenge, and respect to you for achieving it. Need to vary the style of press ups though (i.e. hand placement width, distance in front and behind shoulders and incline/decline). Apparently, doing only standard press ups day after day can result in 'man boobs', due to over development of a single area of the chest muscle group.
Clearly, you were sitting in the wrong seat at college. Yeh, I remember the old school GB rugby league standards, before the Aussies showed us that you actually need to be athletes to be the best at any sport. For a posh game, there's a lot of Wigan influence in the Union game these days, with the Farrell family, Sean Edwards and a few other cross-coders.
Just love the encouragement that we get from our better halves. Each time I return from my garage/man cave, after a run or exercise session, I'm greeted with a tut, a slow shake of the head and a mutter that sounds like 'idiot'.
I passed on the Sunday 9 miles and instead did a speed session on the treadmill in the evening. Of course, I use 'speed' as a broad description and probably only appropriate to me. I managed 400m, 800m, 1K, 2K and 3K, each followed by a short rest and stretch. It took me just under 50 minutes and I really felt like I'd worked hard as my legs were cramping up a little. I may well add this as a new regular training session.

    RM, this is the guy.
    https://www.olympicchannel.com/en/stories/features/detail/john-mcavoy-ironman-former-criminal-cope-isolation/

His is a brilliant story but this link doesn't give full details of a specific training programme and the 1000 press ups is just part of it. This 'bodyweight regime' seems to be a big thing with prisoners. (By coincidence I once did a week volunteering in a prison but I didn't see any of this sort of thing.)

Mrs JB is quite into fitness and does these Joe Wickes type of exercises and parkruns when she can. I tried one of her exercises once, thinking it would be a piece of cake and couldn't manage it. (My man-boobs might have got in the way!)

Today is pull ups. Will try to get to 200..............

Another good workout from you on the TM.

PS hope the link works but there are others if you google his name.

PPS You are right about rugby union not being quite so stereotypically posh as I characterised it. Even a southerner like Joe Marler (from my own county) seems to be pretty 'ordinary'. I went to a football school (a secondary modern) and then transferred to a rugby playing grammar one and all the rugby lads seemed posh (and huge*, no doubt repping out a zillion pull ups before breakfast)). It clearly marked me for life.

*one of them, inevitably called Simon, was a total man-god at 17 (and actually a very nice lad). A few years ago I was browsing the results of a nearby parkrun and - you guessed it -there was his name, some 3 minutes behind my time achieved on the same day elsewhere. I can't tell you how much pleasure that gave me, and I probably should be in therapy.
  • Redmist, thanks, we weren't aiming for a fast time on Saturday because of the conditions. Yes, it was a nice social 10k forest run this morning, but unfortunately the last for at least a month in a 6 person bubble.
The garmin is a 645 music, and it is amazing. I'm still finding my way around it, which is good for my brain.
That's very impressive doing interval sessions on a treadmill. As I've said before, I just can't get on with them.
  • JB: The link worked fine thanks. He did really turn his life around didn't he. My only question is, how the hell did he manage to eat the amount of calories that would be needed to power through that level of exercise. Well done re the prison voluntary work too.
Funnily enough I have never played a single game of rugby league. I did play two games of Union for charity; once on the wing, which I hated and once in the thick of it, which I really enjoyed. As my dad played football for Wigan Athletic in the fifties, when they were in the Northern Premier League, I was always going to follow that sport and would still be playing now if I could find a local team that didn't know my medical history.
hillstrider: Just Googled that model and it certainly looks the business. I've never really invested in any good wearable technology. I have an old Soleus GPS watch that I bought on ebay for £15. I just use the stop watch as it takes far too long to pick up any GPS signal. I have an even older Garmin Forerunner 310XT. I stopped using that for the same reason and because it was useless when open water swimming. Might invest in a new model if I manage to sell my golf trolley. My interval training would be less impressive if you saw the associated times, all five of which were PBs, of course.

RM, good point as he must have needed about 6000 calories a day.

I think a game of footie would just about finish me off if I tried it. Your dad played to high level. Prior to Covid I’d regularly watch my local team which plays at a fairly modest level ( 7) and am very impressed with the quality and fitness levels. The better young players find their way into Division 2 teams.

Rest day for me, partly because I want to have the energy to stay up as the US election results come in.

Of course this isn’t a political thread so it would be wrong to disclose my preference, so I’ll  confine myself to saying that he isn’t orange.

PS Mrs JB and I have both had letters from HMRC giving us a tax rebate. The JB household will have a Xmas after all.

  • Good afternoon everyone,

Redmist, I'm really pleased with my Garmin 645 music, and am finding my way round it. There are functions that I will probably never use, but you never know.

JB, my local team when I lived in Surbiton was Kingstonians. I used to watch them with my Dad from the terraces. There was a grandstand, but we never went in it. When I lived in Waterlooville, my local team was Havant and Waterlooville, who a few years ago got through several rounds of the FA Cup. My local club is Dibden and Hythe, but I've never watched them. Their new ground is only a 5 minute walk away.
That's good news that you and your wife have both received tax rebates.
I won't be staying up all night to follow the Election, but if I have to get up in the night to visit the bathroom, I will turn on the radio to see how it's going.

Today should have been a rest day, but it was bright and sunny this morning with no rain, so I decided to go for an easy run. I had synced the course that I ran with Alice a few weeks ago into my Garmin, and used the "course navigation" function. It was really good, but the only thing was that it didn't show the pace. I knew this, so it was good, for once, to run without knowing my pace. I compared my run time with my run with Alice, and it was nearly 5 minute slower.

    Afternoon all,

Damien - I see you battled the strong winds a few days ago on your run.

JB - I see you were also battling windy conditions a few days ago but managed to avoid the rain. I was looking forward to the rugby as well - was pleased to see us win. 1000 press-ups! .. think I'd struggle to do more than 10-20 but haven't tried. I see you managed 1000 but your spotter said you weren't straightening your arms - reminds me of Superstars when they were sometimes marked down for the same thing. Great news on the tax rebates - I have worked out I'm owed one but last time I checked they still hadn't worked out the calculations themselves. I'm also due a rebate of some NI - the last correspondence was them saying "we sent you a cheque in June" and me replying "oh no you didn't - go and check again".

Redmist - having only discovered a couple of years ago I enjoy watching the Premiership rugby union, I tried watching some rugby league as well. Not sure what it is that's different but it didn't 'grab' me in the same way so not bothered since. I'm the same - don't mind getting soaked in the rain (makes me feel even more virtuous afterwards) but don't enjoy battling strong winds.

HS - I'm still waiting for Margaret to decide about a Garmin (still trying to persuade her to go for a wrist-based one like the Vivoactive rather than a hand-held eTrex .. but the fact the Vivoactive is re-chargeable but the eTrex need 2x AA batteries might be enough to persuade her). Good to hear you managed a forest run and were able to navigate with your Garmin. I can't justify a new Garmin as the current one is working fine and I'm supposed to be treating myself to a new electric golf trolley first - maybe next year, but I bet by then there'll be yet another new model to have to consider!

I ran 5.3mls @ 10:56mm pace this morning and thanks to me running early on, and a clubmate running early as well but at a slightly slower pace than me, I found myself at the top of this week's notpub2pub leader-board. Of course, it won't last long but I'll enjoy my brief reign as notpub2pub king for the time being! :)

A nice surprise - one of the notpub2pub'ers messaged me saying he'd be happy to drive over to where I live so we could do a socially-distanced run together. We both want to up our mileage to 10K and he thought it would be easier together. I've suggested next Thu (12th) as that's the day we used to have our pub2pub club runs.

I went into town after my run to the Dulux decorator centre to get the paint for the dining room/kitchen. Because of the forthcoming lockdown they have been busier than usual and didn't have some stuff I wanted in stock. But they assured me they're open over the lockdown period. So either myself or Margaret will pop back there over the next few days to get what I couldn't this morning.

Mel, great to have a runner partner. HS seems to have hundreds! I’ve always been more of a solitary runner (halitosis?) and usually found it a bit tricky to find someone with the right pace. When I was younger my partners would hold me back but with my current one, half my age, I feel bad when I slow him down. As I’m a terrible chatterbox any partner has to have patience.....or earmuffs.

Good to see you and HS got out today. Will try tomorrow.

Mel’s reference to Superstars took me down memory lane. Jonah Barrington was  trumpeted as a super fit competitor....got disqualified on the squat thrusts and flounced away.
  • Lovely day for a run along the prom. Sunshine and just a breeze. 3 miles in 22.27 was OK especially after a night spent glued to CNN fearing the worst.
  • WtnMelWtnMel ✭✭✭
JB - in normal circumstances my problem was the other blokes in the club are mostly younger/faster/fitter than me so I couldn't run with them. And the ladies who are my pace tend to stick together and dare I say it, are a bit cliquey. The Thu runs we used to do (the pub2pub run) were good because the faster runners had to loop back to collect the slower runners at various points on the route. I've got used to running solo since the original lockdown so it was a nice surprise to find a fellow 'plodder' was interested in running together (albeit 2 metres apart).

Been playing golf today - last time for at least a month. I didn't win - but was only 7 shots adrift at the end (I can sometimes be 10-15 shots worse). And managing 5 bogies (1 over par) on the first 9 today and a par on the 2nd 9 made up for that.

Going to try and run early tomorrow morning but will just do 3-4mls. Then I have to go to the Dulux decorator centre before lunch to see if I can get the paint that wasn't available last time. Then tomorrow afternoon I have a U3A Science & Technology zoom meeting and this month, we're being told about nuclear fusion - sounds interesting!
  • Good morning everyone,

WtnMel, I hope Margaret doesn't take too long deciding what device she wants. I would definitely recommend a wrist worn, rather than a hand held. That reminds me of the old days, running with a stop watch! There are already new Garmins on the market, so next year you will be spoilt for choice. There are comparisons on u tube, between models x and y, which can help decide whether the more expensive model is worth the money.
Well done for being top of the club's leader board!
That's good having a member of the notpub2pub'ers offering to do a socially distanced run with you.
That was lucky getting in a last minute round of golf. I saw on Strava that you managed to get out for a run this morning. I haven't run today, as I was waiting in for my new trail shoes which I ordered from Wiggle yesterday, to arrive. They've just arrived, so I might nip out for a short run after lunch, but not in the new shoes. I haven't opened the box yet, it was in a plastic cover which was wet, so am waiting for it to dry, before proceeding.

JB, I will have to limit my hundreds of runners to just the one, but it doesn't have to be the same one each time. 😁
I remember Superstars, there was a guy whose surname was Jacks, who did endless dips. Was it Kevin Keegan that came off his bike in one of the races?
Well done getting out for a run yesterday after staying up half the night watching CNN.
  • WtnMelWtnMel ✭✭✭
HS - I'm not 'nagging' Margaret to choose the device I'm helping her buy as I'd rather she decided in her own time. And since the golf course is now closed for a month, I can't go and order my electric trolley that she's going to help me buy for myself. She doesn't want any bells & whistles on her Garmin so the easier to use the better - as long as it has the 'back to start' function she'll be happy. Yes - was a nice surprise for my Thu run clubmate to contact me out of the blue. The golf course was really busy yesterday (people obviously getting a last round in before the course closes) - we had to wait 30 mins before we could start. I think it was Colin Jacks who did endless dips - and am pretty sure it was Kevin Keegan came off his bike trying to overtake someone on a 90 degree bend.

As HS noticed on Strava, I managed a 4ml run this morning and was pleased to see my pace improve each mile (11:09 10:38 10:28 10:23). I had a young lady pop out of a side road ahead of me at one point - she was wearing shorts and a t-shirt (I was in shorts too but had my thermal top on underneath). But it was the gloves and woolly hat to accompany the shorts/t-shirt that amused me. Though given the speed she was running, I doubt she would have noticed the chill in the air.

I popped into town earlier to get the rest of the paint we wanted - they have obviously had a  delivery in the meantime as the stuff out of stock two days ago was available. Compared to two days ago, the shop was fairly deserted (just a couple of other customers).

Right - off to lunch now as I have the U3A Science & Technology zoom meeting at 2pm - feeling weary after my early run so hope I don't spend the whole meeting yawning!

HS and Mel, yes it was Keegan who came off the bike. The dips guy was Brian Jacks from Judo. I always used to enjoy the team events when the unpaid guys from rugby union would beat the superstars from soccer.  We even did a kind of spoof superstars where I worked, ending with the final event of darts in a pub!I reall, and this was 1979, that I won the gym tests, but not the 1500 metres as I had to miss it. I wouldn’t have won it anyway.
Funnily enough my best mate there, a guy that I lost contact with for about 30 years or so, got back in touch from Munich. He mentioned that he was a keen cyclist and swimmer and took part in team triathlons. He didn’t know that I was now a runner. Neither did he know that at the time he was planning to pop back to the UK and see me, there was a triathlon planned in my home town.
All I had to do was to find a cyclist and we had a team.
It just so happened that I was always seeing guy at work who obviously commuted by bike. Further enquires revealed that he was a top regional competitor. We had a team. We won the trophy! It was one of those rare occasions in life where everything was perfect. Especially the bloke on the bike!
  • Just popped in to say that I've downloaded and installed the Windows 10 October Features update. It took less than 10 minutes, which makes a change from the usual several hours.
  • Good afternoon everyone,

WtnMel, I was wondering whether the young lady wearing shorts ahead of you was the reason you increased your pace😁
Good to hear that you have now managed to get the paint you wanted.
Hope you managed to stay awake during your zoom meeting yesterday afternoon.😴

JJ, thanks for the clarification re the superstars competitors.
That's a coincidence, your best mate you hadn't heard from for 30 years getting in touch, advising that he entered team triathlons; and you had a top cyclist at your place of work. It obviously worked out well, as your team won the tri trophy.

My new Salomon Cross 5 trail shoes arrived yesterday and I gave them a work out this morning. Just an easy pace 5.2 miles.
I've reset my TV again as another couple of channels have changed their numbers. The pictures seem brighter and the sound louder, so I must have done some tweaks. I've been watching the BBC News Channel all afternoon, and it is nail biting. It looks like Biden has got it, but it's still very cold.
  • WtnMelWtnMel ✭✭✭
    Evening all,

** Anyone who hasn't already done so, please flag 'the sneakercover' as spam so we can get rid of that post **

JB - that 'mock' superstars competition sounded like fun. And it sounds very fortuitous to get that triathlon team to fall into place and to win the trophy.

HS -  I didn't know there was yet another Windows 10 update on the way .. guess I'll know when it arrives and starts downloading when my laptop slows to a crawl for no apparent reason. Re the young lady in shorts .. she was too quick for me to catch. But I'll freely admit to using ladies ahead of me in races as a target to catch and overtake before selecting my next 'victim' up the road ahead of me. Good news to hear your new Salomon shoes have arrived and you've been out in them. I'd seen the prompt for new channels recently but as usual, have been ignoring it. Perhaps I need to respond to it next time. Speaking of tv .. I have the Radio Times each week and go through it, selecting what to record. But for some reason, it hasn't turned up yet so I've sent an enquiry message and will check the online programme guide in the meantime. I managed to stifle my yawns during the U3A zoom meeting and I think I got away with it! :)

I ordered some waterproof trousers from Craghoppers. Bought some the same size as other Craghoppers trousers which fit perfectly. Unfortunately these waterproof ones were too small so I've had to send them back today and will ask to exchange them for the next size up.

As we've now had our first frost, I dug up our dahlias today and have wrapped them in newspaper and put them in a shoebox in the garage (the method suggested by my friend Alan as that's what he has done in the past without any problems). I had to sweep up the leaves at the front of our house - the back garden is a different matter and as well as leaves, we have seeds from a sycamore tree so I'll get the leaf blower out tomorrow to do that.

HS, good luck with the new trainers. You must trust the brand to take them for a 5+mile trial.

Mel. we get loads of leaves. I used to go out and rake them - great exercise. I then bought a leaf blower which was a bit of a waste of time and money. Last year I thought I'd leave them on the lawn for the worms. They all went somewhere by the Spring and the lawn looked none the worse for it.

A rare excursion up the hills for me today. Some long and gentle, others short and very sharp. Only a 30 minute workout but I was well knackered by the end.
  • WtnMel: Yep, just flagged the sneakercover, and they look so cool too (not).
Tagging on to a young lady in shorts has always been one of my ploys, ever since this incentivised me to drag myself up the well named Plodder Lane in my first Bolton marathon.
hillstrider: Looks like I'll be retuning this weekend as well. What really bugs me is having to delete masses of rubbish channels and the adult channels as every time I retune they all come back.
JB: 30 minutes on hills is enough for anyone and I imagine that you would pick some pretty steep examples to test yourself. Had a pretty quiet week as I've been resting a sore shoulder for a few days. Them flippin pull-ups again. Managed a TM 10K on Wednesday evening and cracked 55mins for the first time (54:50).
  • RM, that's a very decent time for your 10k. Well done. Sorry about the shoulder - my fault for banging on about pull ups!
A lovely morning down here and this encouraged a very big turnout of runners along the prom. Managed my standard 3 miles in 22.30 including a 7.10 final mile which pleased me no end.
My football team scraped a point against even more desperate Burnley. It's going to be a long season.
  • WtnMelWtnMel ✭✭✭
    Afternoon all,

JB - the leaf blower was something Mrs Wm bought herself - nothing to do with me. Raking the leaves is easy enough - trying to rake up sycamore seeds is a pain and nigh on impossible, so hoping the leaf blower makes that easier and at least gets them all in one place. Well done re your hilly run and prom run.

Redmist - I haven't re-tuned yet and probably won't as I've just set up all the recordings I want to make for the next 7 days. In the past I've selected the wrong update option and all the recordings I'd set up got wiped out and I had to schedule them all a second time. Well done re the TM 10K.

Ran 4mls this morning - it was cooler but I'm still in my shorts though I have started wearing my thermal top under my t-shirt. I've been needing my head torch again when I set off and hadn't re-charged the batteries so they conked out half-way round . Luckily it was getting light enough by then so I could see okay. It was noticeably quieter this morning when I was out .. I started to do the cyclists, dog-walkers, pedestrians, runners count I used to do in the previous lockdown. This morning it was 2,3,3,2 (began getting into double figures last time).

Still no Radio Times in the post but they did send me a link to an online pdf version. I find circling programmes I want to record with a red pen the easiest way - but had to go through online version and note down programmes of interest. Done it now but it was a bit laborious!

And stupid admission time - I was almost at the bottom of the stairs when Mrs Wm appeared so I jumped off the last one. And now one of my knees has a little twinge. Hopefully nothing to worry about but can't believe how stupid that was :(
  • JB: I'm just too impatient on those bars and tried a daft exercise I'd seen on YouTube. Those runs along the prom sound idyllic, as do those 22min 3 mile times you keep trotting out. I was quite pleased with my 10k effort until I realised I'd be trailing 10 minutes behind you at that distance.
It's going to be a pretty intense footy season and I expect many changes and a few surprises between now and next May(ish).
WtnMel: not looking forward to putting on base layers or thermals, gloves, etc. I tend to warm up quickly after a couple of miles and begin to resemble a steam train puffing along the streets.
Just how scary is Mrs Wm to bring about that reaction from you 😀. Hope there's no lasting knee damage.
  • Good afternoon everyone,

The spammer seems to have been deleted now, I don't know why they bother posting on these forums. I suppose there is always one, as they say.

WtnMel, it always helps to have someone to chase whilst running, but I usually find that they turn off just before I catch up with them.
Glad you got away with your Zoom meeting.
It's  unfortunate, that the waterproof Craghoppers were to small and had to be sent back. Does that mean that your waist is expanding🤣
I'm not much of a gardener, but usually rake my back lawn with a wire rake which clears the leaves and also aerates it.

JB, thanks, the new trail shoes were fine, but I didn't wear them for todays 5k. I want to break them in a bit more before trying any speed work.
Well done for doing some hill work yesterday, remember "hills are your friends!"
Very well done for this mornings 3 miles, especially  the final mile in 7.10! My best final mile in this years forest 5k's is 8.20, which I've manged 3 times.
The Saints are top of the Premier League! My amateur team Havant and Waterlooville are playing tomorrow in the 1st round of the FA cup, and it is being televised on the red button.

Redmist, well done for your sub 55 minute TM 10k. It always amazes me how runners mange to run for so long on TM's irrespective of pace. Sorry to hear about your sore shoulder and hope it soon gets better.

WtnMel again, I'm still wearing shorts, and a thermal top under my t shirt. I only wore a cap instead of a woolly hat this morning as it was a bit warmer.
There were quite  a few runners out in pairs , but more solo runners than usual. I ran with Sarah F and we saw Karen and Alice at the top of a hill. It was difficult to not stop and chat! There were also quite a few dog walkers but I didn't count them.
I had to laugh at the thought of you jumping off the bottom stair when Mrs Wm appeared. Were you showing off, or did she scare you.👻 Hope your knee will be ok.

Ran the Saturday 5k forest challenge again this morning with Sarah F, and we ran a course that we hadn't run for several weeks, as we fancied a change. Not one of our best times but 27.37 and a WAVA of 67.47% for me was ok. My Vo2max is now 48, which is approaching the max of 50 for over seventies. It says that I have the fitness of a 20 year old. I wish that I could run as fast as one!
  • HS - that's a brilliant Vo2max! You could show many (most) 20 year olds a clean pair of heels.

Mel - I too am an habitual 'circler' of TV programmes. I'll confess: it used to be such a thrill to get the Xmas Radio Times and go through it with a felt tip. It used to kind of kick-off the festive season somehow. Those were the days! But I'll still do it this year and hopefully run out of ink when it comes to Mrs Brown's Boys!

RM - don't worry as I really slow up over the 10K. I might try one tomorrow to illustrate this. I'm not quite sure how I could face winter were there no football. One of my sons is a chip off the old block and is a total anorak. The other one - for all my encouragement  - has never had a sporting gene in his body. I feel that I failed him in some way!
  • RM, as stated, I do slow up as evidenced by today's 6 mile in 52.53. Found it very hard too!
  • WtnMelWtnMel ✭✭✭
    Afternoon all,

Redmist - ha-ha .. I jumped off the bottom step to scare Mrs WM ;)

HS - no expanding waistline here re those trousers :) Just the sizing of these waterproof ones being different (same size as others - different fit). I've been wearing a cap when it's been raining - am saving my thermal hat for when it gets really cold. I'm not quite sure how I'll manage if I need my head-torch AND a cap one morning .. I should probably see how/if that combination will work. Yes, I was showing off for Mrs WM .. I said I was going to try from the 2nd step and she said nooooo (I wasn't really going to - just pretending - and would probably sprain my ankle if I really did try). I was curious and just checked my VO2 max- it's currently 41.

JB - Mrs Wm goes out early for a walk. She always makes me porridge on a Sunday and this morning, it was presented to me with a Radio Times tied with a ribbon as she'd called in to the newsagents on her walk. These days we find it much easier for me to go through the RT and set up the recorder for the week ahead - saves missing anything we want to see or us having to find the programmes on iPlayer. Also, with the various series we can do series record, then watch them like a box set which means it's easier to follow the plotline(s).

Tried the leaf-blower yesterday but despite the motor working fine, there was hardly any power to the air being forced out (suction wasn't working either). I'll have to strip it down as I suspect its blocked inside. So I reverted to the lawn rake yesterday and managed to collect 4 dustbin liners worth of leaves. They've been left behind the shed to rot down over the Winter and needless to say, there are more new leaves on the lawn today.

My knee seems to be better today - don't think it will cause any problems next time I run.

Our house looks a bit like we've just moved in as furniture is spread around. We're having the decorators in on Tue/Wed so we've been clearing the dining room today. The kitchen is being done too so Mrs WM is currently pottering around moving some stuff from the kitchen to the conservatory (trying to do it so she still has access to things she wants).
  • Good morning everyone,

I’m just popping in to say hi, and hope everyone is keeping well. I’m afraid I’m a bit behind in reading your posts, but hopefully there are no new injuries being reported or other woes.

We’re still doing the Couch to 5k thing, but have had to repeat week 7 as Steve was finding it a bit too much stepping up to 25 mins running without a break, and occasionally had to walk for a bit which was a bit demoralising for him. On his last run however he did manage the full 25 mins (apart from small breaks to open and close farm gates), so this week we are going to do week 7 for a third time to consolidate that 25 minute stretch, then move on to week 8.
Other than that we have managed to fit in an odd walk or two, notably last Wednesday when we encountered the local hunt on our “blackberry route” (no blackberries left now unfortunately). I was surprised at how many people had turned out with their horses to join in (it isn’t an actual hunt club as such, just a collection of local riders who keep in touch online, and set up these hunts whenever they can get the landowner’s permission). There was also a number of spectators, both pro and anti hunt, so all in all there was quite a crowd. We got talking to one of the spectators (pro hunting) who told us they just used a scent trail these days for the dogs to follow. Whatever it was it certainly got the dogs excited, I’ve never heard such a frenzied cacophony of barking, howling, yelping and screeching, it sounded like something from a horror film. It was quite unnerving actually, I was glad we were nowhere near them.
I’m busy at the moment with getting renewal quotes for car insurance and house insurance. I really hate this job, but needs must. I’ve also just received an email from BT to say our broadband contract is coming to an end next month, so that’s another comparison job looming. On top of that our fuel provider went into administration, quite out of the blue, a month or so ago. Ofgem allocated our account to Scottish Power in the interim, but I'm still waiting for them (Scottish Power) to get in touch to tell us what tariff etc we are on. I expect that will turn out to be higher than I'd like, so I expect I'll have to do another comparison search to get a better one.
Pleased to see that Biden has won the election (whatever Trump may say), and just hope that is good news for Molly and her friends.
Have to go now as our Sainsbury delivery is due. It’s really handy getting a weekly delivery, but we have to unpack the skips and bag everything up ourselves, so I’ll have to hunt out our spare bags now.

  • JB:  Bet you could easily knock up to 8 minutes off that time if you concentrated on 10K running for a short while. I overslept yesterday (too much Douro wine) and decided not to do my Sunday 9 miler. Instead I tried my speedwork session again but in reverse, i.e. 3k, 2k, 1k, 800m, 400m. Managed faster times at all distances and am knocking on the door of 15 minutes for 3k. I really hope that some of these improvements will transfer to the open road.
WtnMel: For a couple of reasons I find that I'm watching less and less TV these days. Firstly, I rarely find anything to watch that is new, either in plot or content. Basically, it's all been done before and, in many cases, done better. Secondly, I cannot keep quiet and constantly find myself criticising speech or grammar, resulting in the brandishing of a red card by my wife. I'm turning into Victor Meldrew.
Aquarius: On my return to running events and struggling to get near to an acceptable time, my daughter suggested I should try 'jeffing'. This is what I started doing on the TM, resulting in huge improvements. If your friend, Steve, is not already incorporating this technique into his training, I would highly recommend it.
