Wardi - it was similar temps here today. Next run is tomorrow, just having a few looseners.

Joe - i was loads fitter then, 3 or 4 bikes, 4 or 5 swims plus a few runs each week. Id have run more earlier n the year pre vlm though.

Jools - in that case only events in low tier areas can proceed then. Otherwise no one could get to them ? So thats conflicting info?
  • I got an email earlier this evening saying Outlon Park is on. No mention in the instructions regarding not leaving my area. Hmm. Not sure now given the info Jools has posted.

SJ - if its on do it. You wont get stopped at 7am on a sunday, and if you did, you are going to a covid safe race anyway. Theres no risk of spreading anything if you arnt infectious.
  • I should have visited England Athletics website before my previous post.

Very clear wording stipulating no travel out of Tier 3 to compete or officiate. Cheshire West (Oilton Park area) is Tier 2.

Technically I shouldn't run but damn its infuriating this close to the prize.

You're not going to visit anyone, not socialising, and if its like Goodwood it was well controlled and spread out. The race is on and grass roots sports are allowed.
We followed the rules 100% when we were isolating, but id struggle with this after a long build up, given its allowed to proceed and is covid safe.
  • Yeah it's going to be difficult to not run for sure. Its 45 mins away so not as if I'm in the car for ages either.

Sounds like it's well organised and similar to other events by RunThrough. No spectators allowed. Strict leave as soon as finished etc.

We have also done everything asked since March. I'm sure I'll procrastinate over it all week.

Having slept on it, I'm running.

That advice regarding no travel out of your area to participate is EA guidance. The gov guidance for their 3 is a lot more open to interpretation (rightly or wrongly).

For example, 'you should avoid travelling to other parts of the UK'. Followed by 'you can travel through other areas as part of a longer journey'. Nice and clear then.

  • Good call SJ. Sounds like you’ve been avoiding contact with anyone outside the home for months so you’re highly unlikely to be carrying it. You’ll be keeping your distance from everyone anyway & you’re outdoors the whole time. For extra peace of conscience you could self-isolate fully this week in preparation. Presume you’re wfh & with the shedmill + online food delivery you’ve no need to be out anyway.
  • Sorry, I didn't mean to cause anxiety. We had it posted in a club training WhatsApp group. I must admit I find discretionary guidance really annoying: just have nice, simple, binary rules so we all know what's ok and what's not.

12 with 3 chunks of marathon pace today. Similar places to last week although I felt a bit creaky as I slipped on an icy patch yesterday and gave my hamstring a bit of a yank. It's ok but a little tight so just need to be a bit careful!

I support your decision SJ, its an approved covid safe event.

Joolska - nice. Is that a current saturday staple now, backed up by a Sunday long run ? Its a good double.

I squeeked out 14m today, was pretty achey by the end, and it seemed a long way. But its progress from a week ago.
  • I think probably fortnightly rather than weekly. I'd intended to do some half mara pace efforts today but didn't want to push the hammie too much.

Nice work Jools, hope the hammy calms down.

TR.. must feel good to be back amongst the MLR's even if it was hard work.

SJ.. it is often confusing as to who can go where but I agree with your decision.  Once your mind is made up one thing less to worry about.

Our running club has about 25% of members in tier 3 so for the time being we decided not to have any club races/handicaps as it would be non-inclusive.  We intend to stick with solo/virtual races for now.
An easier day of 2 x 4.3m for me with a bit of preparation work in between for a decorator arriving Monday.  unwanted Dado rail & a door removed, phone line re-routed, light shades removed etc.
Now it's out of the way I can try something a bit longer tomorrow.  Looks a better day too, rained most of today here.

Jools - every other week is s good idea. This far out from any races im sure that mp or a bit quicker would be ok anyway, even if you dont hit hmp.

Wardi - a good mixed day there then. Hopefully ill adapt soon, id like to be back up to 5 days a week by the start of jan, for 13 wks to Dorney. Hopefully i can do 16m next weekend and 18m a week or 2 after that......it was mild here again, must have been about 10 degrees when i was running, yet i saw a couple of folks running with a jacket on !

Turbo intervals today, hope to run tomorrow.
  • 18 today to make 58 for the week. Currently on 233 for the month and unlikely to run tomorrow, although seeing as February's 239 is my second highest this year, there is a part of me which is tempted to do 7 just because  :D

SJ - That's the right call.  Its only guidance anyways and sounds you've been pretty much spot on through all of this Covid time.
TR - That's a good 14m d&d, not surprised you felt achy, it will feel much easier next time.  I am going to try and get some cycling miles in to add to the road miles, felt a real improvement when I did this in 2017 and 2018.
Wardi - Bit of a bugger there with the different tiers.
Joolska - Some good numbers and a good weekend of running there.  You've prompted me look at mine, 16m today, 62 for the week, 210 for the month and 2331 for the year.  Biggest month Jan 263 (full mojo) lowest Sept 152 (mojo ebbing). Mojo now coming back.

16m today with my mate, a bit cool to start with and then a beautiful morning @ 7.35 mm, to back-up 12 on Friday inc. a 3m burst in 18.45.
  • I'm on 2,358 for the year to date. Hopefully building a decent aerobic base for next year.

Jools - nice, you are setting yourself up nicely for next year. Are you doing a spring mara ? Wrexham, newport, dorney ? Or waiting  until vlm ?

Nice OO thats a speedy long run. I think some cycling can help if its intense like turbo.

I only needed 503m accross Nov and Dec for a 10m/day average and 3660m. But im only going to register ~100 for nov, so covid has put paid to the 3660. Main aim now is to be as ready as i can be in Jan to crack on a bit.

oh Jools, do those 7 miles while no one is looking, go on, go on, go on. ;)  Nice 18m today BTW, hopefully was it as blissfully windless as it is here.

OO.. that's a good 16m in the bank at a decent pace.  Nice conditions by the sound of it, sadly misty & murky up here.

Our club charity girls asked for as many miles as possible/sensible Fri-Sun to kick off their fund raising (British Lung Foundation).  My BIL has COPD so I duly obliged with 31.5m in 3 days.  12.6m today mostly on a foggy racecourse, start & finish was at the delightfully named 'Askham Bog'. :)
    66m for the week.

I had a bit of a niggle 'slump' in mileage roughly March to July but I have rallied a bit and currently stand at 2,467.
  • I'll wait for VLM. Psychologically I would rather target a race which has a good chance of going ahead, plus small wave starts are not my cup of tea.
  • TRTR ✭✭✭
You've got plenty of time to build more base then, as you dont really need to be doing specific marathon prep until summer.
  • SJ - Definite conflict this year between following the rules to the letter or abiding by the spirit. Can't blame you for running.

TR - Good to see you back out running. 14 miles is no mean feat post-Covid.

Wardi - sounds good on the decorator front. We're getting our internet moved to the new home office sometime soon. Well done on the charity front, any excuse for extra miles!

4 miles yday, 10 today with the aim of getting at least 5 secs/km quicker per km as I went on, but could only hang on to that for 11km. 40 miles this week which is the biggest of the plan so I guess it's a mini taper from here on in. 3 weeks to something like a 16:45 I hope!

Joolska - no worries at all re raising anxiety. I can do that all on my own :) Once I stopped and actually thought about it I realised there is no good reason not to race since the event is going ahead anyway. Nice MP running again and longer run. Hope the hammy settles down. The small wave start is something that I am not looking forwards too. Especially as we are called up in twos in the finish time we put down when entering. I think I put 2.55 which is probably an overestimation given the course and lack of others to run/pace with.

TR - Progress indeed from where you were with the positive test a week or so back. It won't take too long at all to get back to feeling strong again either. Awesome annual mileage and as you say but for the virus curtailing things you would have met that impressive 10 miles a day average.

Wardi - hope the decorations go well and not too much disruption. Nice charity mileage the last few days.

OO - Glad to hear your mojo is on its way back. Better news recently has lifted spirits of everyone I think re vaccines, Biden etc.

Joe - Did you settle on an event to do your 5k race in the end? You were looking at Oulton park possibly right?

I'd take today's weather next Sunday thank you very much :) Perfect day for running, no wind, 6ºC rising to 8ºC . The only issue I had with today's run was a crowded park. Still lots of other runners to chase I suppose and potentially practice for lots of weaving.

I did the 4.2km laps of the park for a half marathon in 1.33. Total elevation was 300m which is supposedly the total over the 42.2 of Oulton park. The last 6km were at MP and felt good. I purposely eased a little on the hill climb as I was getting carried away on a couple of the earlier laps.. save it for next week I thought.

Rest day today so Nov ends on 414km (283 miles). The first part of the year was iffy when I deferred London mid Feb as I wasn't feeling it (prophetic or what) and didn't get going until May (405km / 251). I picked things up over summer as I hit the fells most midweeks and weekends so currently on 3495km / 2171 which is already my second best annual total ever but 9% down on my best ever year (2019) so Runalyze informs me.

I'm just happy I have been able to string 3 years together having fallen off the horse from 2014-2018 (the wilderness years).

Weather watch for next weekend in Cheshire: 1ºC at 9am, 4 mph wind. Brrrrrrrrr.... might be a long sleeve, hat and gloves. I like the look of that wind though. The track surface might be a bit tricky. I think I'd rather be in Valencia with Marders next Sunday.
  • SJ - Excitement must be building. You've got yourself to a good place, it's now just about doing the business! A year to the day since my last marathon and my first sub 3. Temperature that day was 1/2 degrees. Patches of ice on the course were the real danger although my other half continues to remind me how cold it was spectating, not helped i'm sure by her falling over in the mud pre-race. I've heard it feels 10 degrees warmer than it truly is when you are running so shouldn't cause you too many issues but gloves sounds sensible.

I don't think I'll be running anything official under the current restrictions but will probably head to a park where the parkrun course is marked out. Since the fake 16:40 in the summer i'm wary of GPS issues so at the very least I want personal peace of mind that i've run a 16:xx.

SJ - id have snapped yr arm off for that weather back in Sept. As its a lapped race you can wear an extra layer that you bin after a lap or 2. The lack of wind is the key, 4mph is great news, i had 10x that.

10m run commute in this morning, less discomfort and even run quite a few 7:3Xs after the usual creaky wu.

Nice run TR, good to hear the old body is loosening up.

Joe.. my club are organising a solo 4m handicap race so the racecourse/Park run course here will come in handy.. one loop is just under 2m so 2 & a bit laps will do it.  Hope you get a decent day for your 5k TT.

SJ.. I agree that wind is the marathoner's worst enemy.  Must admit though I don't race well when the temps dip below 3 degrees.  No matter how much I warm up neither my lungs or legs function well.  Best of luck with the final taper.

Just over 5m with the Mrs today, very blowy compared to this weekend's calm conditions.  Legs a bit tired after the last few days but it has loosened them up a bit.
  • sj - you're looking in really good shape! And glad to hear you're racing.

TR - sorry to hear about the covid woes, but cool that you're all in the clear now. It's scary stuff.

rjr - congrats on the sub-17 5km. Nice one.

Plenty of good training going on as usual which is good to see. Not so much here. Things remain up and down - spent some time in isolation as my wife's work had an indirect case (child of one of the staff) and we got hit by a nasty virus (not covid thankfully, but it has still taken recovering from), plus picked up a foot problem (non-running related), as well as a lot of stress with a family court case (very much went in my favour to put a stop to 6 years of bs from the ex), and our house move is still up in the air (was supposed to be last Thursday but problems further up the chain so no idea if before or after Christmas).

Annual mileage to date to give an idea of what I've been up against this year, 961m......... though there has been a couple of 50m ish weeks over the last couple of months.

Managed an 8m jog yesterday where I felt almost over the virus though, and am quite chilled that I'll eventually get my fitness back, so more interested in what I'll do going forward, than what I've done, so onwards and upwards, etc.

Grrr... email from the organisers of Sundays race, I can't run as I'm in Tier 3. So that's that then. I could of course still turn up but morally, having been explicitly told not to attend, I wouldn't feel ok doing so.

Looking at it philosophically, there are far, far more important things happening to people all over the world. It's not the end of my little world.

Case in point, sorry to read about your recent concerns TT. Puts it all into perspective. I will read back properly later.

The training is banked. I'll move on with plans for 2021 after taking december quite easy I think.

    Onwards and upwards indeed.
  • Rotten luck SJ but I'm guessing the organisers had no choice.
  • I'd guess it's a licence condition
