  • Why are all of your beers so strangely named? I certainly don't fancy any Old Dick of an evening. I'll stick with a nice glass of water and maybe a Revival rehydration shot. I used to favour Old Rosie cider back in my heavy drinking days. That was one of those cloudy, strong enough to knock you out but still goes down easy enough ciders.

    15 miles with a working Garmin this morning. I think it just wanted to give me a scare.

    Good advice seems to be keep away from drinking anything prefaced "Old", probably a good general rule in life. 
    Jools - Nice one. 

    Had a Proper Job, lunch and then felt incredibly tired so had a nap!  Just totted up last week, 69m of running, 60m cycling and 4m swimming which is a lot for me.  Running rest day so early morning 1K pool swim.

    Not surprised you're bushed after that week OO! Good choice of ale.
    Proper Job beats most of the competition IMO. Had a very refreshing Organic Pale Ale from St Peter's in Suffolk on Friday evening though. Only 4.5% so ideal refreshments before the fell race/TT Saturday afternoon. Could have done with some fortification during that: 50 mph winds on the tops & driving rain which stung like hail! 10 miles & 3,000' meant legs were sore yesterday. Waited til late to allow max recovery time then got out for 13 easy miles which ended up as 18 cause I got lost a few times :D I'd had enough by 14 but had to get back to the car. I was running on the lanes between the old Severn bridge & Thornbury as I thought it was flat round there. Ended up with over 850' of climbing too  :s

    Good weekend of lumpy exercise Jooligan, even if you did have to add a bit on!
    Jools.. that's good news if you felt well enough for a run, quite a relief for you too.
    CC2.. those cloudy ciders alway look strong to me!  Nice 15 miler yesterday.
    Speaking of cider incidents, some of you may remember Monique formerly of these forums.  Sub 3:15 runner, she was West Yorks based so I used to have a few races with her in the locality.  She told me a tale of a raucous cider fuelled girl's night out which ended up in a club; the guest band of the night were Showaddywaddy.  Our Monique thought it would be a great idea to clamber onto the stage during which she  managed to knock the bass player over. :o   These days she is a very talented freelance costumier - she designs and makes specialised period, gothic, historical costumes for theatre, TV & films.
    Got out for a pleasant 10k across the fields this morning.  A bit windy but I did escape the afternoon downpours & gales thankfully.

    TR.. sounds like a tired MLR but always nice to get those done.  I remember one commute I was 4m from home very cold & tired then it started snowing.  No choice but to get on with it but I was very relieved to get home!

    A sunny 5.5 miler this morning, by way of a contrast it poured it down for 2 hours this afternoon.  So much for light showers. :|
    A longer run planned for tomorrow.

    TR - Is that a more than normal run commute?
    Wardi - Unpredictable this weather  pretty warm when sunny.
     Two runs Tuesday for me, thankfully both dry and sunny. A slow and easy 7m followed by a hilly 9m with 1300ft of ascent this evening.

    OO - thats a nice double......Monday (sometimes Tuesday) mlr run home is usually 12 to 17m typically 14 or 15, depends upon time and how the run goes. I try to get a 12 or 13 in later in the week too......this week is about bridging the gap back to normal training after a minimal week and a light week, so 13m monday was enough anyway.

    8m back in yday, another run home tonight.

    12m this morning, pleasantly warm out there.  3 laps of the racecourse while they were busy setting up this afternoon's race meeting.

    Good miles again TR, do the legs feel pretty much recovered now?
    York racecourse has a tarmac service track just inside the grass where the horses go.  It helps the crews get around more easily to prepare for race days,  do repairs & maintenance etc, I think the camera crews use it too.  Otherwise used by dog walkers, parents/kids, buggy pushers, folks out for a walk, cyclists, plus runners of course.  I do occasionally run onto the grass infield if there's a traffic jam!

    Some more miles banked TR.

    10m progressive run to Padstow and back along the Camel Trail with my mate. Started off at 7.30 and got gradually quicker to finish on a 6.06 after a 6.16 and 6.28.  It was only at 6.25 ish did speaking get hard do silence reigned thereafter and just got into it to finish the session off. Same run as last week but finished today 3 minutes quicker at an average of 6.51 miling. Thankfully the weather played it's part being warm, sunny and still.

    OO - That's great work and nice to get that feedback that you're getting fitter!
    Wardi - That's not ideal for getting to sleep. We had just the one strike locally the other day but it was enough to knock some people's power out. Set off some house alarms in the vicinity.
    TR - Nothing short for you this week!
    Jooligan - you are having some month on the running front. You might not feel it but I suspect you are as fit as a fiddle deep down!

    No good news at my end. Peterboro has almost certainly slipped away. I'm icing and stretching 3/4 times a day but can only run pain free for a mile or so. I'll give it one last try Saturday and then sack it off. If I can get back to running in a month or so I may have one shot at London qualifying for next year in September.

    Wardi - that sounds ideal. The grass next to that must be decent for running on too.

    OO - nice one, thats backs up sunday nicely, the power of company.

    Joe - sounds like you need to stop for a while. To be fair there comes a point when you have to stop all the exercises to let it recover. You got yourself into good shape, so can do it again.

    Joe - That's a real bugger.  I had to bin my first ever marathon, in my hometown Cardiff 2004, with an achilles problem. Bitterly disappointed at the time but it was the only real option.  I took a month off of just complete rest, came back with more desire than ever and did the marathon a year later.  Now 30+ marathons later. 

    TR - Happy birthday, 54?  Enjoy the beers.   Your right if I was running on my own, maybe 10 @ 7.45 mm. It was Steve,  so I was telling him visualise TR in front of you at Goodwood, 150 metres ahead, run him down. :-).  He passed on his congrats for your sub3 Goodwood part 2.

    Many happy returns TR. Although I suspect, like me, you also secretly despise another candle on the cake. Enjoy those beers. Mileage inching back up duly noted.

    OO - terrific improvements over short space of time. I like the analysis regarding being able to talk etc. Far more informative than iffy gps splits lest we forget. 

    Joe - that's a real bummer but if you've done everything you can then there isn't much more you can do, should the final decision be dns come Saturday. I'm throwing all my eggs into the London basket, sh*t or bust for a gfa time for '22.

    Wardi - as TR noted, having that course on your doorstep sounds perfect. I have some green spaces on my doorstep too but not in the same scale as a racecourse. 

    A bit wet here but nothing too bad. We avoided the lightening but Liverpool and further along the north-west coast seemed to get it quite bad. 

    Standard week again so far. Tues 3 x 10 min efforts on reasonable runnable grass, save a few boggy areas. Graduated to the b group but still quite a way off 5/10k paces. HR effort was right up there so plenty of room for improvements at those paces. 

    Comfy 16.5km last night. Kept things nice and relaxed at just under 5:00/km (8min/mile) and noted nice low HR afterwards so that end of the curve is also getting stronger. 

    This is a down week so will be just over 50 miles before the final climb up to 60+ during next 3 weeks just before the serious business starts up. 

    Expecting delivery of some new Ride 13s. Up&Runing have them on sale at £75 so grabbed a couple of pairs for the imminent mileage spike.

    Sorry to hear the Achilles hasn't settled as quickly as would have been hoped, Joe.  It can be a tricky area to heal (apparently due to limited blood flow to the area).

    OO: nice progressive run.  Casually dropping a 6.06 mile is fine form, especially at the end of a progressive!

    Sounds like the fitness is coming back, SJ.  Keep plugging away and you'll suddenly get 'pace lift', if you're anything like me: everything clicks and sessions are 10-15s/mile faster.  Lovely but rare...!

    I took yesterday as a rest day and then did my MLR today.  I'd planned to do 12, but ended up with 13 (just outside 8s), as I came to a lane and found that a farmer was using it to move his cows from one field to another.  I didn't fancy my chances against an entire herd of cows if they spooked in a narrow lane, so turned around and went back by the shortest alternative route, but that still meant an extra mile.  (And yes, country mice can laugh at the town mouse freaking out at cows.  I can take it!)

    Did I post my monster track session on Tuesday? Probably not as it meant a late night. Basically it was 2k, 400, 1600, 400, 1200, 400, 800, 400, 400, 400 off 200m jogs and at progressively faster paces. It took a while!

    CC2 - That's probably all TR should drink from now. ;-)  That is a monster session, sounds a bit of a getting out of breath killer..

    Lunchtime tempo for me, 4m @ 6.13 mm. That's all the faster stuff done for the week, so just easy running - til next week.

    OO - i felt for him travelling all that way only to bump into a gale in Sept. Nice one today, defo no more fast running now this week.

    Jools - nice one, beats city running. I was tunning the lanes to work on Tues, didnt see a soul for ages and just had the birdsong for company, awesome.

    SJ - i got my Goodwood rides from there, they only have 60m on them, and i need a new pair of Pegs next. Although im about to buy a pair of Next% too, i tried to set up a nike membership in order to get a 25% voucher for my birthday, but did it too late, so ill have to pay full whack.

    Good one CC thats about 8k effort, i prefer a timed jog though to keep consistency.

    Cheers for the good wishes. I intend to stick to Gold rather than old beers tonight.

    Jools.. nice MLR including the re-route, ah the joys of country running.
    OO.. good pace in the tempo, I did 4m 'fast' as a club handicap a couple of months back and it did seem a strange distance to guess a pace for.
    SJ.. I have run Worcester Parkrun at their racecourse too.  It's more multi surface and a bit bumpy so not as smooth as York.  Good training this week!
    CC2.. crikey that's a big session of the faster stuff over a mix of distances.
    7m for me, I'm helping marshall a club handicap tonight (staggered start) so I intend to run to my post and back again.

  • TR - coach allowed my 88 - 90 seconds for the jog. I eeked it out to 90 most times! My last two 400m reps were actually faster than my official PB, but I don't ever race 400, I just jog it now and then to score a point for the club.

    Missed my morning run and was a zombie for this evening haven been woken at 3am by my cat chasing a mouse around the bedroom. She'd been locked in since 9pm, so where in the hell she found a mouse is a worry! It let me rescue it from her clutches and I took it outside, pointed at the field and hoped it understood directions. Couldn't get back to sleep until about 2 minutes before the alarm went off for my morning run. Needless to say I turned it off and got out of bed 5 minutes before I needed to start work. We have to start going back to the office soon, so that wonderful option will be taken away, as will the morning runs. Replaced with a 40 minute commute each way. I don't want to!

    CC - good that the rest times were consistent, shame yr routine is going to be messed up. No home working here at any stage though.

    Last yrs bday treat was my garmin, todays was a pair of next% v2, ill be a modern runner by the time im 60.

    8m easy done. Long run tomorrow.

    7 miles easy for me.  I'm not sure if it's the last lingering effects of the vaccine, or hayfever kicking in, or both, but I felt so sluggish despite a good night's sleep.

    It's going to be interesting to see which bits of working from home/remote life continue, and which bits get jettisoned.  If I'm back from my run by 7.45am I can still leave by 8.25am, which means I'm in time to do a 9am start in Bristol, but because I'm a bit slow to get going in the morning at most that gives me an hour's run.  I have tried running before 6.45am, but it just doesn't suit me at all.  Oh to be one of those people who can jump out of bed and run immediately...!

    When I was working my start time was 10am so I could fit in a 4-5m morning run without getting up too early.  Getting the bus to work and running home (anything between13-20m) I saw as a good way of using commuting time to run.  Having the right clothes & keys etc in the right place took a bit of organising and concentration!
    CC2.. good to see Mavis is doing a cat's job properly :) Nice of you to give the mouse another life though.
    Hope the birthday tipples went down well TR, a useful gift I see.  I take it you won't be hacking chunks off the heel a la Charlie? ;)
    A bit dull & grey this morning but with temps at 10 degrees and light winds I enjoyed a pleasant 12m in t-shirt & shorts.  I did suddenly feel somewhat overdressed however when I saw another runner who had taken his shirt off and stuffed it in his shorts!

    Wardi - overdressed in a T shirt? They werent gifts, more an excuse to spend the dosh. Charlie has lost the plot this rime, those shoes are all about the foam (with a plate to provide stability) so cutting the foam away is crazy.

    TR - Happy birthday and congrats on the gift. The gift of a few minutes off your marathon time if they work well for you!
    Wardi - I have a friend who does the top off tucked into shorts but then he is a very sweaty man! This is someone who managed to get burnt doing the Edinburgh marathon on a cloudy day. 
    Jools - I follow an ultra runner who ran 30 miles the other morning starting out before 5am. I too can't understand how those people do it but I guess with a job you often don't have any choice.

    I've deferred Peterboro. Still can't quite believe one run has taken me from running 60 miles a week to not being able to run half a mile pain free. I'm just clinging on to the fact it's not a sharp pain but just a dull ache and hope that means recovery won't take forever. Walking and cycling seem fine so i'll try to keep my weight down, do lots of stretching and hope that I'm back to running in a month's time. Have another physio appointment in 10 days so that will be a bit of a benchmark perhaps.

    Joe - well done, good decision, removes the pressure. Now is the time to see if you can turbo, swim etc.....shoes werent a gift, just an excuse to spend the dosh. I proved to myself i could still go sub3 without them, now to see how fast i can go with them. Reckon you'll be about right with a few minutes, might be a bit more as i dont wear race shoes for maras.

    Back to it today with 10m easy, 10m approx mp+10%, legs creaked a bit, but felt good to be grinding the bigger gears again.
