Hmm I may look at the Invincibles myself...I was always somewhat put off by the weight but most people say they run lighter than they weigh, if that makes sense. And I guess weight's not so important for a day to day shoe. I'll miss the Epics when they're gone as they had everything...comfort, cushioning but also light enough for speedier stuff. Even did my last Liverpool mara in them after having very sore feet in Zoom Flys at Vienna (though that was partly due to too much walking prior to the race, of course). Got almost the same time in both races (4:14) despite Vienna being flatter...I'd have got a better time too were it not for the wall of wind for the three miles down the Mersey. Anyway, I digress...

Hope you feel better soon, Ian.

Rcouture, I expect my max is over 200. It got to 199 during Dorking 10, although that was with the watch only. I expect it may have gone higher if I hadn't taken the walk breaks when I did. I seem to struggle a lot with warm weather.

Cal-Don't you usually run in light, minimal type shoes? These are the exact opposite, but if you get them from Nike you can try for 30 days and return if you don't like them.As a daily trainer I think they're excellent though.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Robert - re Nick Pearson, nothing would surprise me from parkrun's employees or directors, current or ex.

Ian - have you been poorly again?

Cal - maybe  a more supportive daily training shoe would offer some protection and help stop you getting all these niggles.  Keep the light, less supportive for your races perhaps.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Shades-Yes it started Friday, some of bug, felt really drained and hardly eaten the last 48hours but definitely over the worst of it,OH hammered me this week with 55 miles.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Ian - sounds like a nasty virus.   No wonder you felt rough.

You'll soon catch up on the mileage, she's certainly a woman on a mission though. 😉
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Robert, yeah, I saw that about Nick Pearson. He was the idiot that threatened legal action against landowners who weren’t meeting parkrun’s timescales for a return after Covid. That annoyed a lot of the volunteers who actually organise the events, as they have built up relationships with their landowners, and threatening ridiculous legal action doesn’t help those relationships!  Plus it was was just a stupid thing to say on Twitter of all places, and he did delete the post.

Big G - are you home now, or still living the high life in town?  ;)

8 miles today, weather overcast and back to being humid again.   Nice undulating route, mostly along leafy lanes, saw a couple of jays but not a seagull in sight  ;)

    Gym later.

I’m home Shades. Everything was on time and I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow but still tired this morning. Had a great weekend though.  Getting the van sorted today as we are travelling to Dover later for the ferry to France tomorrow. We are stopping in Bruges tomorrow, and as you probably know, I love it there.  We haven’t got all the campsites booked as we want a bit of flexibility but we have a good idea of where we are going. We have booked the TdF site though as we weren’t sure how busy it may be in the area, which is right on the route.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G -  exciting off on your hols especially seeing the TdeF, I'm guessing you'd certainly need to pre-book the campsite for that.   I remember you saying how much you liked Bruges.

Are you allowed to take food over, dairy, meat, etc now we've left EU?

Enjoy the packing, I bet it's a long list...
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Yeah, that’s right Shades, there are loads of restrictions on what can be taken over :( We will have to get supplies there when we arrive. We have decided to risk taking Tigg’s food and will plead ignorance if it’s checked.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
    Big G-Have a good trip.
In work a bit later today so got out for 7 before, feels back to normal now so all good.
Interestingly my son has today tested positive for covid, pretty certain it isn't what I had though.
171 miles for June now, should be my highest mileage month since Feb last year.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - I think I'd take the dog's food too, could be a lot harder to find his food than yours.

Ian - this latest variant is doing the rounds.  Now you'll have to avoid your son again.

Good you're feeling well enough to run.  Well done on your June mileage.

280 miles and nearly 8hrs of travelling (we stopped for about 30mins on the way). I hadn’t even thought about it but the A303 was horrendous with Glastonbury traffic, not helped by an accident and also a lorry broken down on a single carriageway section. But we are here now, staying in a Travelodge about 5mins from the port.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
Ian, no...I used to run exclusively in Nike Frees when I started taking running seriously, but for the last couple of years I've used Epic Reacts. They are a light shoe but also more maximal. But Nike don't make them any more...they replaced them with the Infinity Reacts which are wider, heavier and include stability features, which I don't want, so it's these I need a replacement for once my last pair bites the dust.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - That's a long day driving, I hope that's the only part of your holiday where you have traffic chaos.   I wouldn't have given a thought to Glastonbury traffic either.

Have a great holiday, looking forward to the updates and photos  :)

8 miles this morning, humidity has lifted, nice and fresh.

Lunch out with a friend later.   :)

I did go along to the gym last night, just across from the hotel and my key fob worked so that’s good. After the long journey I was a bit stiff so I just did an easy leg session, plus stretching and did feel a bit better having done something. It was just 45mins whilst OH was relaxing watching TV so all was good.

8am ferry this morning and all on time.  Hoping the paperwork checks on the other side all go fine with Tigg. I think some travellers get tripped up by the rabies checks, as some get in a muddle with the dates that are on the forms, but hoping ours are fine. We’ll soon find out!  Had to get the U.K. sticker for the van, and I put the light deflectors on, so all is good on that front.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Big G-Good luck on all the checks.
Cal-I've only ran in Nike Invincibles and super shoes,so didn't know the reacts where bigger than your older shoes.
My mum has now tested positive also.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
    Safe travels, Big G.
Ian...ugh...a lot of people seem to be catching it at the moment. At least people don't seem to be nearly as ill with it so hopefully that's the same for your mum.

Woke up nice and early for a run, but unfortunately my colon didn't so I ended up waiting until 10am to go out. That was no bad thing in the end as I wanted to do some faster stuff and I tend to be better at that a bit later in the morning as I'm not quite as stiff. The workout was 9 miles, comprising of:
    3 miles warm up
    2 miles tempo
    1 mile recovery
    2 miles tempo
    1 mile cool down

Ideally I'd have done the tempo as a 4 mile block, but I'm a bit out of practise at that so decided to split it so my heart didn't explode (I was wearing the strap for this and HR was in the 180s for the tempo bits so I guess that was prudent).
I was bang on sub2 HM pace for the first two mile block but was a bit too fast for the first mile of the second lot then slowed a bit too much for the second one. Still, reasonably happy with that considering it's been a while (tempo really is horrible, isn't it?)
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
12 miles this afternoon, the start didn't measure right by about quarter/mile so will come out less when I correct the distance on strava.
Managed to dodge the worst of the weather.
  • RcoutureRcouture ✭✭✭
Big G - Enjoy the trip

Shades - Hope you had a good lunch

    Cal - Tempos are rough

    Ian - Nice 12

Just under 7 from office to station this eve after rest day yesterday. HR starting to look pretty good. I think I’m going to get my knee checked out by a specialist. It’s in decent shape at the moment but the faint soreness is basically a constant (not just my imagination!) so would like to be proactive and have it scanned given that I’ve gotten pretty questionable diagnosis by physios.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Rcouture-I may have missed this,do you have any warm up races before Chicago?
  • RcoutureRcouture ✭✭✭
    edited June 2022
Ian - All I’ve got on the books is a 10k a week on Sunday and then the Big Half in September with the latter being the main tune up for Chicago. Been meaning to add races but haven’t got round to it yet. What have you got?
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
Rcouture - my physio Toby has his own ultrasound scanner. If you want an MRI though, you'll have to persuade your doc to send you, or pay for one (not cheap).
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Ian - sorry to hear your Mum now has Covid, hope it's mild.

Cal - well done on the tempo intervals.   Is this going to be a regular weekly session as part of your Chester training plan?

Rcouture -delicious lunch thanks.  Italian, my friend and I love to eat there and we know he's leaving soon, lease is up for sale and we're making the most of it as I think he'll move on as soon as he gets an offer.

Re your knee, this is what was perhaps a bursa, as diagnosed before.   Annoying it hasn't cleared up so if you can get it scanned at least you should get an accurate diagnosis.

Good news on your MAF stats improving.   :)

Today is my scheduled rest day.
  • RcoutureRcouture ✭✭✭
Cal - Yes I checked and fortunately it would be covered by my work scheme. Separately if I need a physio again I will try your man Toby for sure.

Shades - Italian, yum. Enjoy the rest day. I’ll be out later this evening when I have a moment.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
Rcouture, that's good then, if they'll pay. I hope it's not bursitis. My friend Colin has that in his elbow and it's really painful.
Also doing the Big Half despite saying I wouldn't do it again. But as Chester's the first weekend in October, I don't have much choice for a pre-marathon half. Let's hope it's less horrible than my race last year.

Shades (enjoy your rest day!), I will do some form of speed every week (aside from parkrun) - either tempo, hill repeats or strides.
A 5 mile recovery run today, though, trying to keep HR under 140...not easy as the bugger will climb any time I go up the slightest incline, cross a road or just let my mind wander. Had to resort to ridiculous slow motion running a few times. Honestly I've power walked faster than that.
A couple of brief stops during the second mile to stroke cats (one tabby, one black and white) - given I was trying to keep HR low, why not?

Cal - What was wrong with the Big Half again, I can’t recall your report?
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Rcouture-I have a half August 21st and a 10k the week before Antwerp.I was going to do a half next week but I'm thinking of leaving it and doing a 20,as I haven't got any done yet.
Cal-How come you want your heart rate to be below 140? If your max is 200,then it seems low to me.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
Rcouture - the smelly tunnel, the GPS nightmare of Canary Wharf, the Wapping cobbles and then the very boring bit through Bermondsey. I've run it three times now.
Ian - trying to keep it in the easy zone.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Had a great day in Bruges yesterday, staying at a site about 3K from the centre, which was perfect. Belgian waffles, beers (AF for me of course, but there is a lot of choice) and Vlaamse Frites (Flemish fries) were consumed :)

Left the site fairly early this morning to drive up to Joure in Friesland, staying at a marina. OH’s parents have come here on their boat and we’ll be going out with them for the day on it tomorrow.
