Cal - stopping to stroke the cats is a nice way to lower the heart rate 🐈

Big G - lovely photos.   Good to see Tigg safely on foreign soil.😊. I take it his documents were in order.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, as far as we know the paperwork was ok....but it wasn’t checked! Absolutely no idea why as it should have been, but no one was there to check it. Everyone who had ‘Pet’ stickers on their screens drove right through without stopping. People are usually paying £100+ for these documents and there is a lot of fuss over the whole thing, so no idea why ours weren’t checked, except I suppose potentially a lack of staff.

Big G - Great pics. Belgians really don’t mess around with their chips.

Cal - That doesn’t sound great. I’ve also heard the course is also basically the ugly bits of the London marathon. Still, the timing is good for Chicago and it’s a big local race I’ve not done so I might as well.

6 miles this evening. Felt quite depleted and weak for some reason. Slept and ate well so only thing I can think of is that I jumped into OH’s yoga last night. Anyway felt better by the end. Have also booked a knee specialist for next Wednesday.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Cal-Great description, but not enough to put you off racing it again.
Rcouture-If it's good timing then you can just switch off from the sights and race.
Shades-I just noticed this thread has 100k comments now 🥳
  • Ian hope the families covid is mild!

Big G I loved Bruges when I was there, find memories of crazy people.

rcouture seen mixed reviews of the big half, a big race and local will be a big plus, think most people moan because of the boring route.

Shades hope you stuck to your rest day.

cal cats don’t come anywhere near me when I’m running 😞

finally got out for a 6 mile run after works felt rubbish but better than not running, going into the office all this week is tough after only going in half a dozen times in 6 months

  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - well maybe the plans are now not to check all pet documents, just when requested.   But I expect you're right and it's all due to staff issues

Rcouture - can't think a yoga session would ever have that effect, maybe you were just having an energy dip.
Good to hear you found a knee specialist.

Ian - 100k comments is a lot of waffling, I just looked at my profile 34.1k are mine, although that must be all threads not just this one.  Back when I joined RW forum, must be nearly 20 years ago, the threads on here moved so fast that it was a full time job to keep up with them.   Luckily at the time I had a job with generous forum time  ;)

Robert - I did no exercise at all yesterday, had a lazy day, don't feel any better for it though.

Will feel strange commuting every day for you this week.

8 miles this morning, feels quite fresh this morning and a cool 10 degrees.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Aprox 45 mins run/walk (60 sec intervals) this morning around the canal and park here. No real problem with the foot so let’s see how it is later today and tomorrow. Hoping to do a Dutch parkrun on Saturday, which if I do it will be run/walk again.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - I expect your run today and Saturday's parkrun will be flat as you're in the NL.    Hope the foot is OK, the long drive (timewise) obviously didn't cause you any problems.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
We’ve shared the driving so far and I think that’s helped a bit. It was 4hrs from Bruges to Friesland and we stopped about half way to do a swap, and it was only about 90mins from Calais to Bruges the first day and I had no problems that day so just drove the whole way. On the long journey from home to Dover we shared the driving too.

Out on the boat today. :)

  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - your foot is obviously improving as you're still doing a fair bit of driving but not seeming to niggle the injury.

Lovely photo.  Is Tigg's companion the one that he wasn't keen on when visiting you in Devon?
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, that was OH sister’s dog called Guusja. She was very full on and Tigg made it clear he wasn’t impressed with her presence near his stuff.  This one is Sam and although there has been a small
amount of barking as they met for the first time, it’s (mainly) been ok :)
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
Rcouture - you do go over Tower Bridge (the opposite way to the marathon) and end at the Cutty Sark, but a lot of it is rather dull. I'd think the London Landmarks is a nicer course but it's hard to get a place, and is more geared to charity runners. Big Half is a proper race with elites - I saw Mo the first time I ran. Do take snacks for after, though, as there's bugger all in the goody bag.
I have days where I have no energy but I'm a menopausal old lady, unlike you...but a lot of things can make a difference - sleep, weather, you name it.
Big G, great photos. I briefly visited Bruges when I was 15, on my way to Germany...I think I need a return visit as I remember the steak and chips I had more than the buildings.
Glad the dogs are getting on OK.
Rob, that would be draining, but at least you got out there.
Shades, also did 8 miles. Just normal pace, going by feel. Went down to King George's Park in Wandsworth - there's a swan family there and I counted five cygnets, all duck-sized now and fledging. The pond there is behind a fence, unlike the Tooting Common murder pond where baby birds are lucky to last a week before disappearing.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - from the photo the dogs don't look the best of friends but are tolerating each other.

Cal - is it dogs that have been killing the cygnets at Tooting Common?

Our swans down at the quay haven't nested this year, not even sure the pair I see are a couple or perhaps siblings.  In previous years the swans have lost their nest and eggs when we have a freakishly high tide and it's swept away.  They usually then make another nest and lay another batch of eggs.    If the eggs hatch the cygnets are usually safe as not easily accessible for dogs due to the river bank being quite steep.  Ducklings are far more accident prone, last week I did see a mallard with 11 ducklings and she was doing a good job keeping them all rounded up and safe.

Took a rest day yesterday and out for 9.5 today after work, similar route to last week but all segments were faster today.
I feel like I'm looking great for HM now so just need to get some long runs in.
3lbs under Boston weight at the minute,I've set myself a target of 7 so I'm nearly halfway there with 10 weeks to go.
  • RcoutureRcouture ✭✭✭
Cal - I must be blind as I’ve never noticed that pond and think I’ve got a local legend segment in King George’s park 😬. Is it the north end? I never run up there. Nice 8 miles.

Big G - Looks like a great trip so far with added bonus that your PF is improved.

Shades - Nice 8. What is your next race?

Ian - You seem to be rolling at the minute. What are you thinking time wise for Antwerp or is it a bit early?

Rob - Well done getting out for your 6. Getting back to the office regularly is a shock to the system, almost like you had never done it before for X number of years!

Club session tonight. Meant to be 4 x 1mi reps at tempo but of course they were run as speed intervals by everyone. It started tipping it down so had to slow considerably for the last two reps so at least those were at the right pace. Anyway with warmup/cool-down etc was about 7 miles all in. Should hopefully hit close to 50 miles this week after 45 last. A hassle getting home as decided to jump on a bus and our neighbourhood is rammed due to Wimbledon so traffic was a horror show.

  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Ian - great progress on the training and getting down towards your chosen race weight.

Rcouture - I have a half in August.   No road marathons available, Tenby is this weekend but I decided after Cork too soon for my ankle, shame as a lovely race.

Sounds like a good club session last night, apart from the rain and getting home.

Having already had 2 rest days in the last week I'm taking another today.  :/  I just feel a bit queasy and not up to a run right now.

  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
Shades...probably not dogs but there are foxes, rats, herons and terrapins, all of which will eat the baby birds. The only ones that survive are the coot chicks, probably because the coots are the most aggressive birds on the pond. A Jamaican lady who visits the pond calls them Yardie ducks :D

Rcouture...yes. It's in the bit through a gate where the tennis courts are.
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Rcouture-I am hoping to be under 3:05 in Antwerp, long way to go yet but everything is trending the right way.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Had a good day out in the boat yesterday and had a very nice meal out at a restaurant on the marina. There was thunder and lightening overnight, but we woke to another nice day today, grabbed a coffee in town with OH’s parents and then left the site, as they started up their boat to go to their next location.

We drove around 1hr have arrived at a campsite for Stadspark parkrun in Groningen, Netherlands. Looks to be a fairly small one (21, 22, 19, 22 finishers the last 4 weeks), but it’s in a very pleasant location and a short walk from Groningen, which is a nice city too. All being well this will be my first Dutch parkrun :) (Foot was a bit sore again yesterday afternoon but it’s ok again today).
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - annoying about your foot.

That seems extraordinarily low numbers for your planned parkrun tomorrow.  Does parkrun not really appeal to the Dutch?
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Big G-You on for the win tomorrow?
Rcouture-I am hoping to go over 50 this week, after my 7 tonight I'm on 35.5,may take a rest tomorrow then 16 Sunday.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Ian, ha, nope!  Probably I’ll be about 40mins :(

Shades, not sure it’s taken off fully but it hasn’t been going that long in NL. Even the one (and only) near Amsterdam only has around 100 runners.  But if you look at the parkrun map you can see there are far more in U.K.

  • RcoutureRcouture ✭✭✭
6 miles home post work. HR really has taken one of these MAF/tempo jumps. I’m off for a lads (well, dads’) night out for the first time in about 2 years 😬.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - the map is self explanatory!

Rcouture - hope you don't have a sore head this morning  ;)

5 miles this morning and after months of nothing I saw the kingfisher this morning, beautiful.   I stopped on the way back to tell a regular dog walker, she looks for the kingfisher too, and was introduced to her 14 week miniature schnauzer puppy.
Then that baby rabbit did the same thing as last week and froze with fear when it saw me, I nearly squashed it with my foot.
    Rain on the way home.

Hope weather is better in Tenby as I'm following a couple of friends doing the Long Course Weekend.

Tomorrow my friend is doing Bolton Ironman, she's only done 4 weeks training on the bike so she's got a challenge to beat the cut off.
  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
OH, Tigg and I ran/walked Stadspark parkrun this morning in about 36mins. It’s a really picturesque park, with lots of trees and a river, on the 3-lap course. Incredibly friendly with the organisers providing teas, coffees and biscuits at the end and as it’s so small I think most people knew each other there, and they were very friendly. Organisers have a house in Reading and used to work in the U.K., and have done lots of events, although it’s only been going on NL for around a year. We finished last (16th) but not far behind the next runner, and I think the winner was only around 25mins or so as we didn’t get lapped twice.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Big G - that sounds a very friendly and social parkrun.   I suppose the organisers enjoyed parkruns in the UK and took it to NL.

    Hope the foot is OK.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
That sounds really nice, Big G.
Shades, I love to stop and pet dogs (and cats if they'll let me), especially pups. I had the pleasure of fussing a poodle pup the other day, though he was teething and decided to give my hand a good chew. Fortunately it didn't hurt too much.
Glad you didn't stomp the poor bunny.

Did Royal Tunbridge Wells parkrun today, in order to fill an annoying gap in my parkrun map...20 mins on the tube, 45 mins on the train, then a 1 mile, almost entirely uphill jog to the park. The park is lovely, with lots of flower beds and a large boating lake, though I daresay the perfect weather helped. The course is two laps, starting on hard paths before then going into a grass field (it's about 50-50 path/grass). It was mostly OK but there was a section where it had clearly been muddy and had set so hard and lumpy that it was like running on cobbles and I had to be careful not to roll an ankle. It then returns to the hard path, with an uphill bit which felt very hard on the second lap (though not as bad as Bedgebury Pinetum). They had pacers today and I managed to squeeze ahead of the 29 minute one, though at the expense of kicking my HR into the 190s (watch only...no strap today). After that I was very thankful that the mile jog back to the station was almost entirely downhill.
  • RcoutureRcouture ✭✭✭
Cal - Haven’t been to Tunbridge Wells in years but remember it being lovely. Quite posh I think. Nice run.

Big G - Sounds a great, cosy parkrun.

Shades - Not sure I’d ever forgive myself for squashing a rabbit 😬

Managed to go out for 8 miles this morning. Felt horrible given last night’s festivities and HR told me so. Anyway miles banked and weather was great. I then had to listen to my youngest’s music class so a cacophony of 3 year olds did not aid the recovery 😣. Will leave the next night out another couple of years methinks.
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Cal -  I always think of Tunbridge Wells as posh too so I'd expect the park to be very nice.

I'd never forgive myself if I stomped on the baby rabbit.  But it's not going to live very long if it doesn't run away, dog owners often have their dogs off the lead there as it's not near any roads or livestock.   I know it's the same rabbit as it's lighter in colour than usual.  It's nice and plump, had a mouthful of grass when it froze this morning.

I see quite a few dog walkers on my runs and some of the dogs have got to know me.  There's a chap with a black Labrador, always keeps him on the lead and to heel.  When we pass the owner and I exchange Good Mornings and the Labrador always wags his tail at the same time.

Rcouture - sorry to hear you're a bit delicate today.  ;)  Perhaps schedule a rest day next time and bribe the children to skip the music class.

I'm tracking two competitors at the LCW in Tenby, one is a Teignbridge Trotter.  Swim was last night and bike today.  One is in first place after the bike and the other is 2nd lady.   However they have the marathon to run tomorrow and a lot can happen in a marathon, as we all know.

We left Groningen campsite at midday yesterday after relaxing and having breakfast following the parkrun. Our next campsite was only about an hour away so we stopped at a town (Drachten) for a couple of hours, which had a food market. We bought an appeltaart from the bakery and some kibbeling (chunks of battered fish served with a mayonnaise-based garlic sauce), which were very nice. Then we came to our next site which is in a National park, by a lake. We are leaving here later and going to Zwolle, which is where OH’s parents live, and staying with them for 2 or 3 nights.
