I'm doing a ride in Derbyshire with some people off the cycling+ forum on the 29th Feb - hopefully talk them into it - if I can I'll sign up for it and repost this then.
WildWill - audaxes are fun if you do them with others - you get a route and have to go from one check point to another where you get your card stamped to prove you made it. The check points are generally cafes, pubs etc and there will be other participants already there or arriving whilst you are there - I think some people probably whizz off straight away but my plan is to stop and have tea and cakes at each stop. I've only done one which was a 200k and the stops were 30something miles apart so still a decent ride in between breaks.
had to go to munich for a few days mo, hence the absence... rented a car and attempted to go and check out karnten, but we decided to go 'the pretty route' and we got lost in the alps on little windy ice roads
I'm not sure - I think it may be at the discretion of the organiser - I've only ever done one and we didn't need mudguards for that. I'm assuming you don't need them as it's in Summer but probably worth checking - I haven't got them anyway though I am looking for a bike with guards and rack for a bit of a continental tour this Summer.

that way you could get an 8 hour workout out of 100 miles... much better than doing it on a racebike and finishing in 5
