Running Shoes

Hi.

I am a beginner at running and rather large at 17 Stone. When I first started Running my shins and knees hurt badly. A kind runner suggested that I change my running shoes. This was excellent and did the trick, all the pains seemed to stop like magic. My problem is that after spending £100 on shoes they wore down in 3 months and the more they wore the more pains came back. Surely there must be an alternative to spending £100 on shoes every 3 months.

I am afraid this is a fact of life for us large chaps.

I am sure you do not have to spend £100, I scour the special offers in Runner's World, and usually get some good bargains.

Also there is a company often advertised in RW that will resole your shoes, so if it is just the sole that is worn, then you can get that done.
  • Thanks 'Squirrel'

I hope to find the advert the shoes are perfect except for the outside of both heels
  • Brookes Beasts are generally accepted as the ultimate "big guy" shoes. I wear them but I feel they are a tad heavy (I'm 15 stone) but I can honestly say I've never had any injury through them and I also have to say I'm in a minority not liking them so they might be worth giving a go.

Oh and they're only about £80 and seem to last fine.
  • Colin,

Have a look at the up and running web site. If you are neutral they have the saucony shadow at nearly half price at 50 quid. Very sturdy shoe and designed for the heavy runner.

  • I'm heavy (18st plus) and I use Brooks Addiicition 4 and Brooks Beast. approx £65. Get two pairs and alternate, also keep a check of your mileage and time.
The running shoe guide on this site can give an idea how long a pair should last.
But it's tough luck on us heavier runners, we wear out shoes faster than the lightweights.
  • Hubby's also a fan of the 'Beast' and also New Balance 801s. He's 6'1 and currently 200 pounds.
  • 200lbs !!

    A mere strippling!!
  • I used Brooks Addiction 4 as well. They're very solid and stable, and they got me through FLM training and the race itself. But as always, it's worth going to a 'prepoer' running store for advice. I'm afraid it's a fact of life that the heavier you are the more pressure you'll put on your shoes and the quicker they'll wear out. I'm about 200-210 pounds ususally, and am on my 4th pair of shoes in about 15 months.

  • Oh joy - I have all this to look forward to.
I'm 5'6" and around 15st 7lb, and only just started this lark.
Bought a pair of swanky running shoes to get started in, thinking if I enjoyed it I would upgrade after a couple of months as times started increasing, but the vibes and feedback I'm getting from people on here suggests I go and see a specialist right away to check gait and 'special needs'.
    Would you chaps concur?
  • When I started out I was 17st, down to 15st 5lb now, found the beasts good. My son is a big guy and is trying Mizuno Wave Legends, which he says are good and a lot lighter - I've got some on order £39.95 through on on the shops on the RW links
  • Its great to hear from other bog runners - all the ones I see look like racing snakes
  • Didn't mean bog runner - BIG runners of course
  • I like Nike Pegasus, loads of cushioning for a neutral runner, stand up to use and abuse well and you can get 2 pairs for £100 from www.startfitness.co.uk

I've been recommended Adidas supernova cushion too.
  • I started running last year in a pair of Brooks Addiction.
I've kept up the regular running since last December and have worn out 2 pairs of Addiction - which I found to be fine.
I currently use a pair of Asics GT2090, which I wasn't too keen on at first. They feel not too bad after 2 or 3 months wear mind you.
I think I'll be having a look at what New Balance have to offer for my next pair.

Incidentally, I'm down to 14 and a half stone from a whopping 17 stone 9 at new year! :D
  • Meester J, got to a running shop this morning (run and become in Victoria, London) and came away with a pair of Saucony Omni, which felt great on. They'll get their first run-out tomorrow, but they felt much more flexible - and a lot lgither - than Brooks Beasts, which I'd gone in with half an eye on.
  • First run out was v v good indeed... And I also discovered today that I can chance my username! Yay!

  • Has anybody got any opinions on the NB1221.

I squash a pair of trainers in about 3 months and very quickly suffer if I dont replace them. Have recently used Mizuno wave Renegaden (OK) and the Asics that replaced the Koji (OK). The Beasts are a bit too much like surfboards for my liking. I always used to run in NB and had a great pair of 1121 but when I changed them for 1122's they were rubbish, I thought that they might have been a friday afternoon job so tried another pair but they too were poor. I just fancy trying out the 1221's
  • anybody 18stone ,used kayanos, beasts, and a new balance shoe? to compare?i've run a half in kayanos, but that was 2half stone ago!!! beasts seem to give me a slight ache in arch, have an eye on NB m1221's- as you gather i'm lost- advice would be great,i'm heading for 16/7 or less!!!cheers rik.
  • Mizuno Wave Legends.I started weighing 18 stone, now I'm 15 and still swear by them. Also bought the same version but for off road running.
  • I have not been over impressed with the NB1221's. although in fairness it was the first time that I have gone away from motion control shoes (following a gait test that said I dont over pronate)however I haven't felt comfortable in them.
The wave legends were OK and so were the Brooks Beasts although they felt very very stiff. I think the best that I have bought recently were the Asics Evolution which took over from the old Kojo's.
I will probably go back to them very shortly.

I had trouble with the NB 1121's as well, the first pair were very good, the second pair were awful, I purchased a third pair and sent them back and was given a full refund. No probs regarding the company but I dont seem to suit their shoes any more

The first 2 pairs of Evolution that I bought also had to go back as the round disc on the sole was bulging. Asics were great about it and soonb got me a good pair.

Hope this is of some help
  • I'm a 15 stoner using ASICS GEl Kayanos with sorbothane inserts for the last two years but wonder if I'm not replacing them often enough - every 12 months, how do you know? Had a few injuries so up for perhaps a different shoe though at the same time I'd like a lighter one for racing. Any advice out there big buddies?
  • I currently use the Asics Evolutions and they suit me down to the ground, however I still only get about 3 months out of them, You can feel when they go, because all of a sudden there is no comfort, its like driving down a track without any suspension, injuries usually folow within a couple of runs so get rid of them, even if they dont look worn out.

A good scout about generally finds a pair for about £70 although I did find them for under £40 before Xmas so I stocked up.
  • Thanks Pete, I did the wet footprint test and chose 2 pairs of Asics Nimbus from virginrunner £70 each - arrived this morning and going for a test run shortly.
  • I have to report two longish runs and no aches in the usual places (calf).
  • Somebody mention the Brooks Beasts ??!

I am named after my shoes, although the latest version are somewhat stiffer than they used to be and I now have orthotics and have moved down to Stability shoes (Adrenaline/Trance).

If you have tried them and they don't suit then try something else. Saucony are a reasonable brand as well. Can't remember what there heavyweight shoes are now but worth a look at least.
  • well im 140 kg ( 21st) and back to this after a 15yr lay off and loads of beer and pies later
needing to get serious but worried over shoe choice - im a supinator with obvious need for HUGE cushioning, after looking on web reviews i find:
    Brooks epiphany 2
    Reebok Premier Ultra dmx 2
    Saucony Grid Shadow 06 / 9
    Saucony grid triumph 3

none of which are mentioned in this thread - what gives?
anyone any advice , i will be on a mixture of surfaces inc. trail, money not an issue
but there is no specialist running store within 200 miles of me - Im in republic of Ireland

    Help!!
  • no problems about the distance as I always buy mail order anyway, try either Start Fitness or Treadbear, both have given me excellent service and are always worth giving a call to with regard to choice. Also have a look at the manufacturers websites where they offer guidance on the type of shoe that you require.
