I'm guessing the term 'tracksuit' comes from meaning a suit that is worn at the track, over shorts and vest/leotard in some cases, to keep athletes warm whilst they are not running. Therefore not actually made to perform.
I personally don't think there's any point in wearing tights....Your legs warm up after 10 minutes running in pretty much any weather conditions.....
If warmth is an issue, a hat gloves and maybe a gilet is the maximum that you really need for a training run...
For races in any weather you can't beat the old shorts and running vest and maybe some gloves if the weather is dire..You'll never see anyone running a race in any serious fashion wearing tights...
I've found a hat to be much better at keeping me warm than running tights. And besides, certain colours of running tights verge on the pornographic and should be banned.
I only tend to wear tights when it is really cold i.e below freezing an a high wind chill, and usually only after dark to prevent abuse from young school girls!
Even if you'll never see anyone running a race in any serious fashion wearing tights... serious runners, international athletes, etc do train in them. What's the point of getting cold, or not protecting your legs from injury? I certainly wouldn't want to run above pace in the winter without them on
I always wear tracksuit bottoms. For one thing, the tights dont seem to have any blasted pockets. And I've just seen some awful sights of other people wearing them.
I was initially sceptical about tights but bought a pair of Nike Dri-fit ones for £10 off last week.
I am impressed by them. After some initial man-in-tights self consciousness, I virtually forgot I was wearing them and got on with running. They kept out the cold even during a blustery winter run along the Union canal in Edinburgh.
I should have made that clearer. The tights were £25, reduced from £35. Not dirt cheap, but I'd heard good things about the range so thought I'd take the plunge.
And, much as it pains me to say this, I got them from JJB.
I went in on a whim, having just finished telling my friend how useless JJB were and that I never expect to find anything other than chav-wear in there.
I ended up eating humble pie, but I reckon this is simply an example of JJB's buying power. If you buy enough stuff with a swoosh on it you're bound to end up with some proper running gear amongst all of those voluminous basketball pants.
Yes why are they called tights ? Tights to me are the things ladies wear, which are the chastity-belt version of Stockings. I thought the only time men wore them was if they were from Essex and going to the bank, in which case they wore them over their head.
Tracksters or tight-fitting tracksuit bottoms would be better names......ah maybe that is what they were and it got shortened to tights ?
I think Nike Dri-fit are the only tights JJB sell - I bought my first pair of tights from them......have since got a cracking pair from Sugoi..........
and once you get past the embarrasment factor you will wonder what the fuss is about - and I guess some of us who are also cycists are used to wearing tights for the bike so it doesn't bother us.........
Just bought my first pair of 'em .... very comfy to run in. Wife rather sceptical (despite being a runner herself) .. "seems a bit odd that's all!". Do people wear anything under them?

I got laughed at by the girls at JJB when I called them tights
Mate of mine confessed to wearing ladies tights when stood on the terraces at footies matches
And I hear jockies wear em too
But only at weekends
...specially on the right legs...
