Cannes

Have just booked an extended (5 day) bank holiday weekend in Cannes (hotel is very central, near to the railway station in the Boulevard d'Alsace). First time to this part of France. Does any one have any knowledge of the area - particularly early morning and early evening running routes?

  • Thanks JJ - I'll be sure to wear mine then!
  • Graham,

I live in Cannes so can offer you plenty of advice!

First, whatever you do, avoid the Croisette (main promenade area) anytime from 9am to midnight. At this time of year it is packed and you will not be able to run without tripping over poodles, prams or posers!! If you want to run on the Croisette do so early in the morning. From the station, just head straight down to the beach and turn left. If you head all around the bay to Palm Beach Casino at the end of the peninsula and then turn back that adds up to about 7.5km.

If you want some really great scenery I would recommend getting out of Cannes. There are some really great places to run around here. My favourite is a loop of Cap d'Antibes (in between Cannes and Nice) following the coastal road. It is just under 10km and will take you past the houses of Elton John, Bill Gates et al. Try and do it in the morning or evening because it is still pretty hot here and the midday sun can be a killer...

If you prefer a more shady, wooded route, head up to Sophia Antipolis (15km inland from Cannes) where there are an infinite number of routes that you can run through the Valmasque, Brague or Bouillides parks - fantastic scenery!

  • Theseus - must be a lovely and fascinating place to live - thanks for the information - the inland routes sound terrific.
