  • Thanks Sarah, I did contemplate that as well.I'll make a mental note for next year

Well done on your first half,How are the legs, you'll be doing a good John Wayne impersonation tomorrow.
  • legs feel really stiff now! gonna have a hot bath and probably fall asleep in fron t of telly! and reward myself with a glass of wine.
  • Hi there all

Well done to everyone that took part! I only started running in any shape or form in May of this year so seriously doubted when I signed up for this that I could do it. And contracting scarlet fever a month ago knocked my training out of whack.
BUT it was a lovely day today and my first race in my home town so I decided to give it a go, and run as much of it as I could. And aside from the water stations, where I walked so as to drink my water as opposed to wearing it, I kept running the whole way, and crossed the line in a triumphant 2:12.32!!
Ok, so by the standards of this forum its no great shakes. But I am soooo proud that tomorrow the entire office is going to get a shiny medal waved in their face! Assuming I make it up the stairs mind, since my knee is killing me...
Anyway, hope everyone else that took part had as good a day as I did, and for those that missed out, sign up for next year. Flat course, friendly marshalls, dodging the Sunday shoppers on the pavement towards the end, laughing as the motorists getting held up in their quest to reach Asda 30 seconds early get increasingly irate....a top day out :)

    A limping but elated EE
  • Well done all. Missed a pb, which I'm a bit cross about, because it is certainly a pb course, and I was still on for one at 10 miles, but 1.51 is OK. Two weeks ago I had so bad a cold I wimped out of Marlow half, so maybe still affected, and I'm not quite doing enough running per week anyway.

Sat on the shingle beach by the car park in the sun afterwards, and got comfortable, and reluctant to set off home, where there has been no sun all day.

Like EE says, top day out, excellent race, fine, cheery marshalls, weather great, no wind, right choice on the layers - t-shirt under the vest, shorts, no hat.
  • Lovely day wasn't it! Loved the runs over the bridge and seeing the boats. Managed a PB of 50 secs at 1:53:50 so quite pleased.

Agree that this is a good course and conditions were perfect (although had to dodge a few cars along the way). Only ran, because I was off to play golf and it was cancelled due to frost; luckily I had my running kit in the boot and got myself down to Gosport. Even the beer & curry on Friday and Saturday night seems to have worked well for me. Reward - 1h21m and a PB by three minutes. Makes the 3.43 at NY two weeks ago a bit harder to explain!!
  • Hi all.

What a great day. I went for shorts, thermal long sleeved top and light hat which got taken off after 3 miles, but the rest was fine. FOundit a bit of a struggle to honest but managed just under 1:38 by my watch which is over 7 mins off my previous PB so well chuffed.

Mrs BDB made it all the way around and came in 3:02 so she too was very pleased with hereself. Marchsalls were brilliant - the lovely Len accompanied Mrs BDB for the last 3 miles and others kept checking up on her thoughout.

A great day out and will definately be on the list for next year.
  • Hello!

No worries about the weather then! But.. achilles a killin' !!

Strapped up my achilles and started off quite comfortable at 7:11 pace miles 1-3. Then it started to tighten so dropped down to 7:35 pace 4-6, then upped it again 7-9. Then the suffering started proper and I had to slow right up. From 10 miles it was 7:40 - 7:50 pace.

You know, I'm 90% certain that BDB passed me at the 11 mile marker. If you were wearing baggy blue shorts with a bit of red on them and a greyish long sleeve top, then it WAS you! I wasn't certain so I didn't distract you.

My final time was 1:38:56. I can't help to feel a touch disappointed, but then, there's always next time (hopefully uninjured). I don't know what the official time will be, as we had to queue in the funnel for a minute or so, just as a chap in front emptied his guts on the tarmac. Anyway, It was a good course (apart from the boring bit coming back from Haslar bridge) and the weather was fab!

Today? Well, my achilles feels torn to shreds! It's strapped-up and I can only hop down the stairs. Me thinks no running for a few days.

A few of you are wondering what to do next... I've got Keyworth Turkey Trot in three weeks (race full), but not expecting a good performance. Yet another week of non-running will bring my fitness right down.

Anyone been rejected from FLM? Swimsarah? If so, do the Lochaber Marathon on the same day. It's at Fort William, and it's FLAT (goes along the Loch). Dead friendly field too, only 450. Treat your family to a long weekend in the Highlands. That's where I'll be! Bring it on!

  • Hi Glyco - I was in baggy with some blue on them and a long sleeved grey top. We're you in shorts and a long sleeved grey/red/green top? I thought I passed you around that point but again, couldn't be sure. Shame to have missed saying hello.

Well done on the time with injury - great achievment. I think you need some serious rest noew and treatment to get you back into tip top shape!
  • Oh my God! What a fantastic day. Swimsarah, you just pipped me - 2.05 for my first half! I have to say this was the friendliest, most well organised race I have ever done and will definitely do it next year.

Everything went according to plan - even clothes were just right. Marshalls were fantastic. I enjoyed this race to the end when i was so euphoric I could have done another mile. Didn't know how to take it as I was worried about running out of steam but I averaged a steady pace right the way round (although mile 12 was a killer) and felt fresh at the end. I now know I could go quicker next time so will spend the next few weeks working on my speed. I felt comfortable with the distance that really surprised me so I am now looking forward to the Paris big one.

I don't think I saw anyone - despite my big LL on my number! Mr LL thinks he finished at the same time 2.12 as Evil Edna - he asks if you have red hair! We'll have to wait for the photos and see if it becomes clearer for all of us!

All in all a great day - roll on next year.

Gf - you did it! When's this Lochaber Marathon - sounds good. Will there be a half?

Well done all of you. What a day...
  • hi LL i agree was a fab day the marshalls were fantastic will send a big thankyou to them! I struggled a bit about the 12 mile mark too but having kids on the corner shouting did wonderds for the legs even tried racing to the finish against a man but failed !!gf i will look into that marathon feel like i need something to aim for.
  • LL

Not guilty - Mr LL must have finished ahead of me as I have long dark hair! And the photos are now up - you can search by race number or by section of the race -

For those who fancy a laugh I'm in photo 7733 on page 4 of the finishers. What gets me is it looks like I'm walking - that was a sprint finish, believe it or not!!!

    EE
  • Thanks for the link Evil Edna and congratulations on a fatastic achievment!

Just checked out my finishing photo - must have been suffering more than I thought by the look on my face!

Does anyone know if the offical results are availble yet?
  • Congrats to you too Little Lou - brilliant time!
  • Thank you BDB - it was fab wasn't it!

I've just seen my photo. Yes EE - I look like I was walking too, albeit in a hurry. I'm no. 7674 on page 4 of the finishers (just in case you haven't had enough of the blood sweat and tears)
  • My finishing picture is 7356. A 'reasonable' shot at the 8-mile point comes up when I type in my race number (200).

Go on, have a look for a laugh - the pics are not as bad as usual (even though I was suffering at the end).
  • My pic is awful!!! (113) Didn't even get a finishing shot!

Lochaber looks like it might be fun. Long way though!
  • Just discovered the results on the Gosport Road Runners website (follow the link from the event listing at the top of this page). But don't hit the Half Marathon button, just find the details from their home page.
  • just found my pic i am no 7653, also look like am walking!
  • 1H50 just as I predicted, if only the trains were as reliable! (Race no.473), faded badly in last 4 mles

Victory 5 next, then training for April marathon, never done one before, if not London, Lochaber..

Lovely weather, see..... Gosport is quite nice!!

    See you all next year
  • I really should do some work - but I'm having a great time looking at everyone's picture and checking out the results. Have to say that everyone looks pretty comfortable and relaxed.

My race number is 467 - it's only fair in put myself up for inspection. Just don't mention the finishing shot!
  • Well, I've not been on here much today. Having a day off to rake 300m2 of gravel off my drive. I'm not sure it's best therapy for an achilles injury, but it's sure been refreshing. Lovely weather!

Well done to everyone, Little Lou did great, Rachael got a PB, Swimsarah's so confident she's going for an April mara, BDB exactly met my prediction for him (1:38, can I feel smug about that?), and Mrs BDB came in smiling. That's fab. Sorry that Hendo missed out, but the way I'm feeling today, maybe I should have missed it too.

Anyway, lots of questions. No, Lochaber doesn't have a half. It's an ace, scenic out-and-back along a loch. If you can cope with the journey, spend the next £19 you earn on the entry fee.

No BDB, that wasn't me. I was number 286, but I haven't checked to see if I was photographed yet.

I had a walk around before the race, looking out for LL and BDB. Saw neither of them, but I'm now 100% sure it was BDB at the end. You went through the finishing funnel just as I turned in through the gates. I tried to catch you up, but then there was that queue and I lost you. Ne'er mind, lots of people had a great day!

Ooh, does anyone agree with me that the 12 mile marker was wrong. I remember passing 11 and it seeming like an age before 12 came up. My splits showed 11-12 was 8:06, which doesn't make sense. I was hurting, not crawling :-)

  • Just been amusing myself by typing race numbers into the photo website. It wasn't my best race, but I didn't hate it quite as much as implied by my stupid facial expressions.

I think the "coolest photo" prize goes to Little Lou, who looks remarkably relaxed at the finish. I know you said you could have run another mile, but in the photo you looked like you'd only run a mile. Nice one! Wish I could remain that composed!

  • BDB - I saw you! I'm sure it was you walking with Mrs BDB (congrats to her too - far quicker than she thought!) after the event back towards the start - we parked right there and I did wonder... I also definitely saw you at the start - I recognised the long sleeves and thumbs!

I'll make a big placard up next time. That or run in a sandwich board thing.
  • gf - your finish pic is great. the first one depicts your injury perfectly. ouch. I looked out for a buggy with people attached and didn't see one - I ended up leaving my children at home, bit too cold... Actually, I think next time I will put a big high placard on the buggy and use it as the LL meeting place. Then you'll all see me, or just the little man.

I would have been great to all meet up, but I am sure we will next year. Now we've seen the faces in glorious and not so glorious technicolor, we know who we are more or less. Let's hope we get a race together before then though.

I just wanted to say thank you all for being such great support. BDB with your time and weather predictions and gf with your injury clinic and wisdom, everyone for their wardrobe contributions and general lovely natures and superior wit. This was a thread and a half. Especially when I couldn't stop typing. i know i go on a bit...
  • Idly browsing through the results and photos, I decided to take a look at how much more athletic than me the 'older' runners looked. How come I get beaten by over-60s and over-70s - that sort of thing. Of course, I know the answer really - they have probably been running for years against my 2 and a bit.

But one of the photos suggested there may be more to it. Take a look at #669, listed in the results as John Tasker, Men 60-69. He definitely looks good for his age!
  • Yup, results already up and the photos. Quick, eh??

Although slightly disappointed with my running, and lots of pbs above show it was a good course, my legs are much less stiff and tired than normal for a half, which is odd. Thinking about it at work today, maybe because I had a shower afterwards (don't usually) and the weather was so sunny in the afternoon so I stopped to walk on the prom at Lee on Solent on the way home, rather than the usual driving time immediately cramped up in the car. Therefore kept moving about after the race. Will I be stiff and tired tomorrow instead?

    Again, well done all.
  • Can you tell me where the results are - I can't find them on the Gosport Runners website? Thank you.
  • Morning folks

Little Lou - probably was us. I was back in long trousers by then though. As Jaycee says the walking back to escort Mrs BDB in probably helped and my legs are fine(ish). Not running until tomorrow though. You did look remarkably relaxed in your finishing photo. Defo under 2hrs next year then!

You can be as smug as I am about that time Glyco. Great finish photo from you too - big effort for the final push.

Big thanks from me too to everyone for chating and the local advice and generally helping this to be the event it was.

Hope to be back here next year and to meet up at other races.
