  • Difficult for anyone to properly diagnose this over the web.

I would advise seeing a sports physio for a proper assessment. My GP is great and I would never critisise him, but by their own admission it is best to go to a physio who specialises in looking at this sort of problem.

The clear MRI scan is a good sign, but I'm surprised you got referred so quickly without even being sent for physio. Like I say though, thats a good sign if there is no obvious sign of damage to cartilage.

There are lots of websites of knee injuries which it might be worth taking a browse at, some examples:

From my own experience of knee problems, it can be dealt with, and there are a number of common injuries which a decent physio will treat either through some sports massage therapy, or exercises. There is also the chance that your running gait isn't quite right, which influences the tracking of your knee. If the complaint prolongs itself, then some orthotics might be a last resort.

Any physio worth his salt though, will help sort this problem.

Good luck. I know how rough it can be when you can't run. I had several months out in 2004 with a knee complaint, which in the end got sorted by orhtotics.
  • Thanks very much for that martin just today a date was sent through the post to see a physio so hopefully they will sort thanks
  • I've got the same problem, it started around the time that I was getting over a back injury, so I also think that it's a gait problem, possibly iliotbial band friction syndrome, tried resting it for 10 weeks along with gentle stretching exercises, pain still there, ibruprofen helps. Would be very interested in your results. Anyone else with ideas or solutions?
  • Well cobbo cheers a good warm up is very in
important i tryed ice at night and it helped lots but sometimes you have to just run and put up with the pain. Do you know wot pattpads are dont have a clue wot there are.
  • Thanks so much for the above advice, I am in the same position as you Sean. I am quite a novice runner, training for the FLM, have had problems recently with my left knee with a pain starting on the left hand side and then kind of spreading. It seems to hit me after i have been running for about 50 minutes. A neoprene leg support has helped but problem has not gone away, does anyone know how long you are supposed to rest knee injuries? Am getting nervous about resting too much, if want to stand a hope of being ready for the marathon!! The article on this weeks runners world update is very useful, btw, 'When to run through pain' and it links through to an article about 'runners knee'which seems to aptly describe my symptoms, might be useful to you guys?
  • Never heard of pattpads. But like Sarah I to wear a neoprene support. Why is it the left knee that people have problems with? But as you say sometimes we just have to grit our teeth and run with it, the trick is kowing when to draw the line and rest.
  • I am seeing a physio for a knee problem. Initial consultation was £38, subsequent appointments are about £32. Best money I have spent, we are working out problems I have had for years.

Lots of things above the knee can affect/cause knee problems, so its worth getting assessed.

I am doing some knee stability exercises, for example, I stand on one leg, bend at the knee about 30 degrees, hold for 10 seconds and then straighten up. This plus about 4 other things in the gym for 4 days now.

This morning I did the stretch where you stand on one leg, bend your other leg back up and hold the foot behind the thigh and I was stood pretty solid - much better balance. I was having trouble doing this stretch for as long as I can remember, wobbling all over the place and having to hold onto something to stay upright, so my improved balance is a revelation.

From what I understand, this improved balance/stability will mean that as my foot strikes the ground when running my muscles will stabilise me, as opposed to my knee having to do the work. Something like that anyway.

I still have problems with my running technique but we are going to work on that when my stability is improved. I remember someone taking the mickey out of my wayward right arm when I was jogging with a friend in 1996, so I am now sorting out decade old problems.

Sorry, rather a long-winded way of saying 'go and see a physio' - its paying dividends for me. I'd also recommend joining a gym, as I am finding the equitment they have invaluable and it has the added motivation of actually doing the exercises. If only doing things at home i find it a bit too easy to do something else...
  • Hello

This all sounds familiar. Left knee has been duff since mid-december. It is funny though, painful sometimes and not others, I can make it do a long Saturday run, 15+ so I am going to just put up with it.

Quick mararthon is out of the window though, it is one pace stuff or the knee really gets stroppy!
  • Would agree with cobbo, I was diagnosed with ITB syndrome by a physio which relates to nunners knee. Started with a lower back problem in which my G.P. thought was a trapped nerve. This then went to the outside of my knee and worked onto the front of the knee and gave me some problems. I carried on running through the pain barrier and eventually broke down. 6 months out and lots of pysio to stretch the band again....pysio suggested that my biomechanics were wrong and I needed to change shoes. I changed my shoes from a pegasus neutral to Asics structured cushioing and had some orthotics inserted...been running pain free now for 4 months...touch wood!
