HRM v speed

Am a new runner with a stone to lose before I can really get on with it and have read bits from this site, the magazine and the Polar running guide and am now completely confused. I did my long run yesterday (a bit short because I overdid it last week and tweaked my calf - foolish beginner) and instead of going at my normal speed, I tried to stay within 60-70% MHR. I was going MUCH slower than normal, and walked a lot to get my heart rate down. Should I be a slave to the HRM or just go as fast as is comfortable. I normally feel really energised when I come back from my run, but yesterday I didn't feel as though I had put any effort in.
