Whats the best way to attach your race number to your shirt without using pins. Have just got a new shirt and am worried pins may end up ripping the shirt.
Tommy T you can buy race number belts from Canyon.com or try insulation tape works for shin pads... may look a bit silly just use really sharp pointed pins, the more blunt will rip the shirt. Must be expensive to warrant the fuss.. :-)
Safety pins, one on each corner, when you finish your race, put 3 closed ones on the fourth pin before you close it and put the fourth on your car key ring. Always handy then.
Pin the number on the shirt before you put it on (pull the shirt over the ironing board). This much easier that trying not to stab yourself with the pins while wearing the shirt.
What do you mean you don't know where the ironing board is kept?!
Easier as then you don't have the 'is my number on straight' worries. Or even worse - pinning the back and the front together and then wondering why you can't get into the damn top.
If you haven't got a tri number belt - get a Hi5 or SIS gel belt - then you have a lil pocket and the ability to carry gels for longer races.
Couldnt believe that despite all the advancements in technology they were still fumbling with pins at the olympics....Had two shirts ruined by pins now..Pulls the threads and is clearly damaged after removal..The sooner a better alternative to this ancient method is invented the better..
I dont know what other runners tops are made of, but I can categorically say that they have certainly damaged some of mine..With the price of decent breathable running tops these days an alternative method such as magnets is a must..
They will have to be really strong magnets to stay on I would have thought..As long as I dont run past too many iron pylons (bye bye pb) they might do the job :O)
personally I do use pins but have no shortage of shirts to wear as every race seems to give 'em away & have had to start donating wicking running shirts to charity.
Personally never had problems with the good old safety pins - they do need to be sharp. Just keep the same 4 ready in your race kit. Been racing since 1984 and never had a top ruined yet!
I've now ordered some of these magnets so will report back soon.I tend to do about 20 races per year, so obviously Id prefer not to have to keep buying running tops damaged by pins.It seems the more expensive the top is, the easier it is to damage?......I noticed that there are many sizes of magnets to choose from.Ive plumped for the 20p sized ones.Hopefully they wont rub on the skin too much and will withstand the constant body movements and variable weather without falling off.Testing these very shortly.
Ive noticed a few lucky runners are reporting no issues with pins...I can only tell my own experience which has been quite the opposite..Snagged materials, pulled threads right across the chest area..ok! Im sure that I could continue to wear them..But this doesnt mean pins are ideal or dont potentially cause issues. My main point (apart from some very helpful advice) is my total surprise that a better system for pinning numbers to shirts still hasnt been invented..Dragons den would love it!
lol Pete, best get down to see the dragons then (when you have the answer). I'll certainly not be wearing my Gore Jacket in a race and pinning a number to it! Thinking about it, can you even pin a number on to a zip up jacket??
I wont be trying that one in a hurry Andy lol.....I thought I was simply missing something about this pin snagging malarky and a quick check on google would throw up an easy alternative thread pull free method...It appears that there is not. YET! ;0)
There is an invention waiting to happen. Its something I often think about when I am running. Anyone wants to join forces with me to come up with a new invention. I have some ideas already!

Don't wear a jacket to race in, you'll get far too hot. If you are warm enough at the start, you're wearing too much
I've been pinning numbers to shirts and vests for 15 years, and never damaged one. Perhaps it's down to technique?

The only other wasy I ever did it was by sewing each corner on.. but it's not as good as pin's...honest!

As I only did 2 5k's 2 years ago it's nots bothered me that much but the pins did put holes in 2 new shirts, would the magnets not chaff?
Good Question on magnet chaffage ? no idea ?

what about bulldog clips? as long as you clipped them on carefully

Pin it to your shorts instead... no need for the belt!
