NDO - Didn't know you were Wenglish too. For the footie, both kids wearing England shirts and all of us supportin 'Engerland' yet for the rugby, red shirts out time, even though we are a football family (All Cardiff City fans).

Dan A - Big Respect for just going for the 100 miler, that's some running schedule you've had. No way could I run / or contemplate running for that long - what do you think about/ feel like after 50 miles? Well inside sub3 for the first 26.1 miles, then it all went wrong. Best of luck.

For Sunday, my running pal (proper Welsh), wants to run around 1:25 pace, so a more gentler canter around Torbay then....

Now that is harsh, Chaps. Fair but harsh.

Dan A- Because you're mad, you will complete it, despite the injuries kicking in at the 73 mile marker. How do you predict something like that?

    Any pointers?

Crab - "interesting" result from this mornings turbo session, thats equally applicable to your tready tests. Hopped on turbo and warmed up to 200w (hopefully IM race watts). This should have my HR ~140.. It was 141. OK good stuff. but then 8 mins later it was 148.. bllcks..

Was sweating quite a lot, so I opened the utility room door and switched on the fan. 5 minutes later 200w and I was sitting nicely @ 141 HR.

By the end of the session (which included pushing HR up to 175 for a total of 20 minutes), my average HR for session was 144 and watts was 200.

moral of the story, heat build up with no air flow in an enclosed room causes your HR to spiral out of control very quickly.

stick a fan next to an open orifice and point it at yourself, and it will be much better.

think this was also at the heart of my nightmare session on Tuesday too.
  • Hail Hail

Somewhere between 10 & 11M this morning. First proper outing in new (blue) shoes. Saucony Grid Triumphs. Bit fancy looking, and first time that I've ran in Saucony's. Felt a bit solid last night during a club dead slow and stop 7M, but today they seem to have softened up and probably averaged 7min/M pace - ran watch free for a change.

CRAB - watch what you're doing with them tabs. Overuse of ibuprofen can lead to liver failure, and possible heart problems when taken with alcohol. But well done on the game of pitch 'n' putt. Bet you look good ina Pringle jumper!

DanA - finishing in the top 3, with Mrs Dan finishing in the same position for the ladies. If she's still in it that is.

  • Just done first 20-miler of the year. It was hot and pretty tough (monster hill at 9m) could really have done with being able to open the door and put a fan on myself - no idea what that would have done to my HR but I reckon it might have prevented the sweat rash where the sun don't shine - OUCHOUCH indeed...

NDO - yes would very much like your Yateley place if you really can't use it. And I'm 90% certain of doing Cranleigh so I'll probably see you there.

    CM - nice new pic!

Dan A - Incredible to even be contemplating the 100m effort. Hats off to you but can't help feeling that you'd do sub-3 much easier if you cut back on the interim races (especially 100m ones!) and focused on training (and rest!!) Having said that, mentally you're clearly a tiger so I go for 2 - injury kicks in but you finish it anyway.

I have taken out a patent out on it. It's top secret cutting edge technology called cut and paste.

I know to you that might think it involves scissors and a pot of glue, but it is considerably more advanced than that. At present time I cannot tell you anything more, lest I reveal something which could lead to others on here stealing the idea.

    10K pb on Sunday, hopefully.
Proper pb should be in the bag (37:07), but 10K split from the Wokingham Half will be a challenge (36:30 or so). Currently training up to 10K shape in a month's time.

What are all those numbers you all post up? I've never really understood.

  • CRAB - Very impressed with your memory; I did indeed say I would be targeting the Millennium stadium for my sub 3 and Welsh too. No tatoos or moustache though. Ouch Ouch has hit the nail on the head though - English for the football ('cos we never qualify) and Wales for the rugby - it really p*sses my English wife off - especially since Gavin Henson kicked 'that' goal last year against England.

OO - I support Cardiff City too, which really p*sses my family off, as Wrexham are our local team.

NM2 - No problem with the Yateley 10k - I'll bring my number with me to Cranleigh. I am number 146 at Cranleigh and will be wearing a red Serpentine running vest.

Anyone run the Leafield 10 miles before? I fancy that at the end of July.

    And the winner is ....

DN being 12 seconds out 1.34.30.

Hot evening, very hilly course.AND over-estimated my own ability.

To improve my PB by 5.14 in 4 weeks and with marathon in between. I don't think so.

Positives- PB by 44 seconds. On target at 6m when miles 7-9 all uphill.

Sent HR soaring and had to slow down. Was aiming for 85% the whole way (never ran that hard for that long) Ave at end was 173 against 175.

2 days on beer did not help and back to the drawing board. Lots of miles at 75% required.

Good luck Dan and others tomorrow. 25.12.30

n2 1:25:14 (a mere one second out) (I did say I was aiming for 1:25 but thanks for the 1:22:xx votes of confidence))

humid in Torbay..ran fairly easily and consistent throughout...heart rate average ???, with progressive build up of sweat and feeling of age from 21 at the start to 41 at the finish. Enjoyed the swim at the end.

next attempt, as its World Cup Week, maybe in 1 week Launceston..

    well done England

10K PB for me (35:56). Very pleased with that, as well as obviously the football. Top weekend!
  • Well done to the racers.

I've almost run 24 miles today (2 runs) at an average pace of 6:47 per mile, so guess I still have some endurance hiding in my legs.
  • Hail Hail

Well done all racers this w/e. Sounds like conditions were similar to mine 2 weeks ago. Hats off to all!

Mrs RB completed her first marathon yesterday (albeit a Moonwalk thing where 8000 wimmin in decorated bras OUTSIDE their normal clothes walk through the night) in 8.50. Considering that she normally only plods 10k in 60mins, and her longest training walk was 12M, I'm very proud of her. Should see the state of her feet this morning though - not a pretty sight!

Fair play on the football - another uninspired performance. With Deco missing, you might have half a chance against Portugal now.

Any sign of Dan A? Or is he still going?

CM - you'll be pleased to know that I have succumbed and invested in a HRM. All data will be forwarded on to you for complete analysis!

Cos I'll no be able to understand half of it!
  • Good work fellas.

RB What d'ya mean you might have half a chance surely you mean WE man. Come on if the Tattoo 'n' Tache brigade can be Wenglish for a month I'm sure you can find it in your heart to be Sconglish or whatever you want to call it. (Or are you sulking 'cos Beckham's joined Joe Jordan as the only British players to score in 3 consecutive World Cups?). Personally didn't think we were as grim as people made out. Plenty of room for improvement for sure but at least we didn't enter the 'Who can play a pass over 50 yards and land it on a soup plate competition' too often for a change.

Not much to report on the running front - too much cycling as the state of my NADS will testify. Not a pretty sight - not that they are at the best of times. Main incident of note being Daddy CRAB's attempt to keep pace with mini-CRAB on the Ride your Bike Week 4 Mile Family Bike Ride - she was in the saddle and I donned my (RED) trainers. I'll spare you too many details but 'twas her (7th) B'day yesterday and as she was getting a bike (with 6 gears) decided it would be nice for her to have it a day early for the ride on Saturday. Tried to teach her about the gears on the way down but it wasn't sinking in. Off we set at a pedestrian (as expected) pace but as the peloton spread out the little bastid found 6th gear and set of like Tour de Lance! So the last two miles saw the little fcker making her dad display all his NADS to anyone who cared to notice as his heart rate soared and had to be maintained for over 15minutes at 178bpm or 96% of MAX - and all this after already having run that morning. Finally caught her up at the finish she turned and looked at me beaming from ear to ear 'Dad I won. I got here first!' didn't have the heart to tell her it wasn't a race. Mastercard can't buy moments like that. (Un?)Fortunately looks like she's inherited some of the old CRAB competitive spirit.

CM You doing a good impression of John Wayne this morning?

Anyone know anything about being stiff in the morning (sorry couldn't resist). For about a month now just as I wake and have a little stretch I get cramp-like sensation in my calves culminating this morning in them both locking solid and nearly bringing a tear to my eye. Gonna book a massage but wondered if it had anything to do with hydration/nutiriton?
  • CartmanCartman ✭✭✭
    as you asked Crab,

fck me my arse is sore ! feel like one of those baboons with a big red behind thats had to do several takes too many of the love scenes on the Brokeback mountain set (The Mouse made me go and see it btw)...

still did two quality (bike) rides over the weekend totalling 190 miles. Keeping an average pace of ~20mph over the distance which was good (av HR under 140). Was pretty fck'd by the end mind you.

managed to chuck in 5.5 ish mile run after the first ride. Once over the RCNBA syndome, settled down into IM marathon pace nicely, pace was sub 8:00 miles and HR a pube or two under 160 (~80%). Although much higher than normal, its not bad after 4.5 hours in the saddle. Most importantly though legs felt good and i was running freely. Would be nice if I can do that on the day.
  • nichs2nichs2 ✭✭✭
maybe a silly question...but does the saddle make any difference?

I've stuck with the same saddle since i bought my bike 5 years ago. I know if i go into a cycle shop i will end up buying something, but i'm under the impression that if you cycle long distances you will get a sore a**e. is it worth investing in a non a**e numbing saddle?
  • CartmanCartman ✭✭✭
a good saddle can make a difference, but it takes quite a while to get used to.

    Good running there TMap !
