I realise now why you prefer to do this as I know myself when running in 70f plus humidity it really makes one boil. At our age it may be prudent to avoid straining under such conditions whereas a sensible steady regime in the meantime can't be so bad.
Interesting concept about getting away with just 3 weeks without the training. That makes me feel a bit better! I'll let you know if my performance is affected after the 10k on Sat. Mind you, we have to remember other situations that slows us anyway, such as wind resistance,wet/slippery surfaces after rain, etc. At least we don't get the tornado effect as they've had in Missouri!

Just a quickie as I am out all day today. That is after my run which will consist of about a 30 mins run with a some strides at half marathon pace with easy jog in between. I shall have to really hold the bit hard back on such training runs as I know the legs will want to run faster also my mind always wants me to run as fast as possible!
Re the 3 weeks off, I like impy will know more after my race on Sunday, how much the time off has affected my pace. Also there is the effect the virus itself has on the body, short term. too late to worry about it now. And yes we have to take into consideration the weather elements. Also I am having a bit of a crisis here, the father of my children (I was married to him for 24 years) is critically ill, it is very much touch and go as to whether he makes it. I am therefore very concerned for my children. They are spending as much time as possible at the hospital, miles and miles from where they live and trying to work at the same time.
  • Hi Peeps,

It is quiet in here today. JJ, you asked me on the General abou t my runnung. Well, my knee is bad at the moment. I have been seeing a physio since January but keep getting injuries. On Saturday I am going to London to see someone that specialises in running injuries.

So, how are things with you all? Hi Ceal!
  • I'm fine Spud, thanks. Ran a 1hr 21 10 miler on Monday and that's it until the autumn.

    What's the knee problem?

    Hi all,
I did my 30 mins yesterday, continuous 2 mins half marathon pace then 2 mins easy jog. It felt very fluid, I am pretty sure that I ended up running faster then half pace so therefore compensated by running the easy jog very slowly, I think!

Whilst I find humidity difficult to cope with, I have a dislike for the very cold conditions. Especially, when it is wet, cold and windy. ( I think you all have got the message by now that I do not like the wind). Therefore in the 2 years I have now been running I have tended to do my hard training in the winter with next to no racing. You could say I am bit of a whimp. After I have done a long run in the winter I like to get home asap to have a hot bath as I get very cold very quickly.

    Anna,
I am sorry to hear that your injuries are still troubling you. Let us know how you get on at the running specialist won't you?

I have just received a letter (at this late date) from the race organisers of my race on Sunday at Sandringham. the organisers are Marie Curie, they organised my last race at Castle Ashby very well). They are saying that they have had to change the course because of new safety concerns. It was to have been through beautiful villages around Sandrings estate. Starting and finishing within the estate. However, now it is the same course as the 5 mile race but through the woods. Goodness knows what the terrain is like ie tree roots, rabbit holes etc etc. Ideal for training on but to have to look for hidden dangers in a race not so good. It will be 2 plus laps of the 5 mile course. I am sure it will be fine, but it makes one wonder because they are offering for people to back out of the race and have a guaranteed place in the 2004 race. Also maybe it is not a very wide path. Well we shall see. It just leaves one feeling a little unsettled, unecessarily I hope.
  • Hi Peeps,

JJ, I am not sure about the knee, I think it is ITB friction syndrome. I also have had a bad hip for over three months now and an inflammation on my biceps muscle ( arm).
Ceal, you will be fine if you decide to do the race. Don't worry!
    hi LI!

Thanks for your encouraging support. As usual. I shall just have to hope for the best!! The organisers also gave one the option of changing to the 5 mile race which they are running alongside the half. However, I have trained for the half and therefore, in my mind, not appropiate to run a 5 mile race. Incidentially, I was impresssed by your time of 40 mins to run 5 miles. I ran 24mins plus a large number of seconds to run a 5k about a year ago. It was under 25mins just! I am sure that I would not be able to maintain that momentum for another 2 miles. In that race it was infuriating there were two teenagers running the same race, they sprinted for a certain distance and then ran out of breath so they walked until they recovered and so on, They still finished in front of me, maddening.

    Hi Spud,
Amongst many different probelms on my knee I suffere from a tight IRB. I keep it under check by icing it sometimes after a long run. I massage down the outside of my upper leg quite regularly. Also, although it is a difficult muscle to stretch out, there are some good stretches, which I am sure you must know. Somehow I mostly manage to keep it in check. Interestingly, very recently I had a low back problem, ocurrs every year when I seriously start gardening again. It soon goes, but this time after a week my knee started playing up, so there is definatly a connection. All is well now, I just increased my Pilate's exercises and no pain now.
  • cealceal ✭✭✭
Spud sorry finger touched wrong key, I mean ITB band. not IRB!!
  • Aww Spud.
Can't elaborate any more than JJ/Ceal info/advice.Stretches seems to be best.
    JJ.
8 miles per hour on a cross-country! And on your second race to boot. I'm still in the Conference League then.
    Ceal.
Go for it gal. Hope weather kind for you.

Day of rest tomorrow for Impey. Then Saturday........kkkkkkkkkk

    Impey
This is to wish you all the very best in a speedy run on Saturday. I hope weather is kind to you too. Remind us what your pb is for the 10k. I know if I look back I can find it, I am just being lazy.
How many miles did you go for in the end on Wednesday?!

I am going for a very easy 30 min jog today, full of determination not to carried awayand run faster than I intend. What usually happens I go into a dream and when I come out of it I find that my pace has hotted up a little!
  • LI.
Exciting isn't it. Whatever else you do, enjoy it. Racing's fun and you find out a bit more about yourself each time you race.
Good running, and let us know the result asap.

Another good training session this a.m.
3.5 miles steady. 2 x 1300 metre laps(measured) round a lake with a 2 min. rest in between. Both laps timed at 5mins.30 which equates to 6.45 miling.
Ran one mile sprinting 2 lamp posts, jogging 2. Ran as hard as possible (but slow) up 3/4 mile steep hill onto the ridge where I live. 10 min. gentle jog home. Total 1 hr.20mins., about 8.5 to 9 miles but mostly high quality.
I feel knackered but very satisfied.

Separate good wishes for your re-designed race. Just give it all you've got; you're a tough lady.

Thanks for the good wishes, it all helps.

Well under 7 minute miles, we shall have you running r 100 metre races yet!! By a lot of peoples standards 1hr 20 is quite a long run for a mid week run, and to have such a high quality element is admirable, keep it going.
  • Hi Peeps,

Ceal, I have been doing some stretches but nothing seems to change. I have this painful click on my left knee even when walking. Was yours like this?

Is your race this Sunday, Ceal? If it is I wish you all the very best! I will be thinking of you!!

LI, Good luck and all the best for Saturday!

    Hi, JJ!
  • cealceal ✭✭✭
    Spud
Yes I had a painful click on my left kneee, and still do ocassionally, this is/was worse when I went downstairs. I also use an infra red wrap on my knee when it is bad, made by a company called Nikken. (You have to be open minded rather than cinical in order to get one's head round the idea). It reduces the inflammation very quickly. Then the clicking is much less and certainly without pain. The stretching takes a long time of continuous work to see good results. I think that it is the low back around the sacro-iliac area that when loosened up produces the best results for the knee. If you want to know more about Nikken products, just ask. Do you live anywhere near St Alban's? There is a very good representative there. If you find a good rep. they will loan you their products for a week or so to see if you have any benefit before trying to sell you something. The products are either infra-red or magntic or both and are there are specific products for each part of the body.
  • Hi Spud.
    I'm good with knees..........!

  • JJ/Ceal
This question has most likely been asked by many before.........
Just prior to running a race, is it best to have a short jog/run as a warmup.Or does it make much difference?
On previous runs(I know I haven't done many yet) you hardly ever see many entrants doing a pre-race run. I've only seen a handful and yet some just do stretches instead. Maybe a lot think they would be wasting some energy which should be saved for the race itself!

  • Ceal.
In answer to your question about PBs.
    1st 10k in 60m.10s(Apr2002)
    2nd 10k in 57m.43s(May2002)
    3rd 10k in 55m.54s(Apr2003)
If I can at least better the 2nd above which is the same race for tomorrow then impey will be reasonably happy!
  • Ceal.
    Nearly forgot.......
    You asked about Wednesdays run.
Just did about 4 and a half miles including a 1 mile and half hilly spell.

In answer to your question re warm-up. I always have a warm up, consisting from anything from 5-10mins very gentle jogging with a few strides towards the end just to awaken the heart and lungs! Then I do a few stretches, I do not do stretching without the warmup.

You are ceertainly making good progess with your 10k times. Best of luck.
  • LI
You should warm up as a matter of course.10mins at least or about a mile. Incorporate a few longer strides as well.
    Then stretch.

Then you can start at racing pace.

Every event I go to there are hundreds warming up.

I have just looked at the 5 mile course, which my husband is running. It is a 2 lap course for the 5 mile race, so goodness knows how many laps it will be for the half. I shall be chasing my tai1! Also very boring. I feel very let down. I would try and run a different half race on sunday somewhere else in the country but do not want to do Stewart out of his race. However, I must change my attitude by sunday, which I am sure I will do!!!
  • Hi everybody,
How dreadfully frustrasting. I have been following your conversations for a couple of weeks now and everytime I try to join in my messages don't get through. I really feel ostracised! I am not going to say much this time because I may get shut our again and that would be a waste of words. I am not ignoring your chat - I have just been unable to add my pearls of wisdom. Briefly, I had my first run two weeks after the FLM and felt good. Now I run twice a week for the rest of the summer - a 10 miler easy (9min 15 sec miles) and a 5 miler `fast' - 8mm. That is intended to maintain some level of fitness before I begin building in September for the winter racing. Actually ran a Fun Run on Bank Holiday Monday. Only just over a mile and not much competition but managed second overall and first lady. It was all very amusing. I am not sure that Fun and Run are compatible. What's the term - oxymoron? A contradiction of terms?

Hope this gets accepted. Good luck to you all. I am following your progress with interest.

  • Wow,
This time I got through. I was beginning to think that you had shut me out. The fur was about to fly! I'll be back.

    Welcome back. Welcome back
    Welcome back. Welcome back,

You have been missed, we were all wondering if you were OK.

I will write more to you tomorrow, Stewart has just come in from a tennis match and needs feeding. Bye for now, great to have you back.
