  • Righty ho then, here goes.

i am a newbie to this game and in a fit of boundless enthusiasm I entered the Fountains Abbey 10k in aid of Cancer Researcg (tbh, I found a link from Nell McAndrew's home page and entered on the off chance of meeting her there!!!). This has meant a total life change from couch potato to racing snake (yeah? Who am i kidding!!) in the last 8 weeks. But having followed the RW beginners guide I now find myself hoping for a sub 1hr time! Like I said, boundless enthusiasm!

In preperation I am doing the South Leeds Stadium 5 on 19th March, I'll post how it goes after I pick myself off the floor and the missus has poured me into a black binbag and got me home.

So if you have a few spare £££ then why not pop along to my just giving page at: www.justgiving.com/markjacobs

or email me throyugh this site or direct at m.jacobs4@ntlworld.co.uk if you want any other info.

    Cheers all.
  • I'm running the Flora London Marathon for Shelter, the charity that campaigns against bad housing and helps homeless people to get back on their feet. Its the first time that I have committed to fundraising on this scale (£1,500 minimum), so this seems more of a challenge at the moment than running 26.2 miles! (I'm not very good at asking people for money, so I've got some hurdles to overcome if I want to realise my target).

So, if any of you fellow runners out there have any spare cash, or feel as strongly about the cause as I do, please sponsor me on- line at www.justgiving.com/andrealowe

    Thank you in anticipation!
  • I was extremly luck to get through the ballot and therefore had a choice for which charity I wanted to raise money for.

As a Mum of two young boys I wanted to run for a local childrens charity so I am running to raise much needed funds for

Born too Soon, based at the Neo Natal Unit, Kingston Hospital , Kingston Upon Thames.

Born Too Soon is a registered charity set up in 1985 to offer information and support to parents of small pre-term babies and sick full term infants requiring specialist care on the Neonatal Unit at Kingston Hospital NHS Trust, and also to raise money to purchase equipment. Parental support is provided on a daily basis.

This charity has been trying to get Golden Bond place at the FLM for a number of years without sucess and doesn't receive as much publicity and attention as the larger charities.

I visited the unit at the weekend and was extremly moved by what I saw. I have been so lucky to have had two full term healthy babies and I cannot begin to explain how much care this unit and charity give these babies and their parents.

Please visit www.borntoosoon.org.uk to fund out more about the work done by this charity. Unfortunately due to cost we haven't set up a justgiving site but if you would like to sponsor me, especially if you live local then please conatact me through RW site.

I look forward to running alongside all fundraisiers on the big day.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. Good luck everyone.
  • Hi there!

I'm running the FLM for a charity which is very close to my heart - Cancer Research. Cancer has effects 1 in 3 people in their lifetime - an overwhelming percentage and three people in my immediate family have had Cancer which is why I want to raise as much money as I can to help Cancer Research.

    Please sponsor me at wwww.justgiving.com/sarah82

    Many Thanks,

    Sarah
  • http://www.justgiving.com/sollis-morocco

I'm taking part in a 5 day (>100 km) trek across Morrocco with a team of work colleagues. We will start from Ouarzazate at the edge of the Sahara desert, climbing over 3300m (10800 ft) through the arrid rocky landscape of the anti-atlas mountains and down to Marrakesh. Quite a task for someone who doesn't like heat! and a bit of a departure from my usual marathon running.

The Reason: My son was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome (a form of Autism) in 2004 and through the National Autistic Society's help and support I have gained a greater understanding of Autism and invaluable knowledge and techniques to be able to help and encourage my son's development.

Many thanks to the Vodafone UK Foundantion who are matching all donations.

    Best regards,

    Dave

  • I have been lucky enough to get a Ballot place in the London Marathon 2006. I have decided to join in the spirit of the event and raise money for Concern. As part of the london marathon team we are raising money for a school in Mozambique. It is amazing what a small financial contribution will actually buy.
£15 will buy school supplies for 8 children for a year.
£55 will help fund train a primary school teacher
£750 will help furnish a classroom for 90 children with desk, chairs and a blackboard.
So why not visit my website and sponsor me!

FE-LINE FIT TO RUN LONDON ?

I am running the marathon and raising money for the Horsham & District branch of Cats Protection. They are a small concern, entirely manned by volunteers and anything I can raise will a) go straight to help the cats and b) make a huge difference to them.

No one has ever run a marathon for them and we are all very excited about it!

If you would like to help, please visit my website.

  • SPINAL RESEARCH - starting clinical trials for repairing damaged spinal cords...

    www.justgiving.com/georgemarathon2006

Having suffered temporary paralysis in three consecutive rugby matches I was diagnosed as having a Syrinx (like a cyst) in my spinal cord. The Syrinx mean that I had to give up rugby and after two years of eating pies I decided to get of my backside and raise some money for Spinal Research.

I ran my fist Marathon for them in 2004 which was the first time I had run without a ball and again in 2005 and have raised over £8k (including this years total so far).

My goal was never to become a runner and I hated it at first, however after my fist marathon I was unable to stop and have become obsessed. With two marathons and 3 ultra runs (Fellsman and Thames Meander) under my belt I’m looking for a sub 3:45 time this year.
  • I'm running (jogging/walking/crawling) the FLM in 4 weeks time for Asthma UK.

One person dies every 7 hours from Asthma in the UK. Bet you didn't know that. I didn't.

"I simply had no idea asthma could be that serious, not until the day my daughter died in my arms." Leo Campbell, Oxford.

    Why sponsor me?

Because this is the hardest thing I've ever done yet I'm still doing it, despite a death in the family, illness and injury during my training programme.

And because I would be over the moon if you did - even just a quid.

    Go to www.justgiving.com/emmamcgowan

Or find out about the emotional roller coaster I've been on since I began this foolhardy escapade at http://seasidemessages.blogspot.com

  • In July i am doing the race for life in leicester to raise money for breast cancer research.
As many would agree this is a worthwhile cause that has touched many people and so i hope that if anyone would like to sponsor me they would visit my secure sponosr site!
    Many thanks Louise xxx

    Every penny counts.

  • I'm a 35 year old bloke, who until a year ago drank a bit too much, had the occasional cigarette, and pondered whether srating at my middle age spread would held lessen it. It didn't, so I'm running the London Marathon, for which I started training, I kid you not, the day after the last race finished. Believe me, I needed all the time I could get.

I'm running for the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund, named after the great man himself, and what feels like a particularly fitting cause in the year London won the Olympics in 2012. Ron's fund helps athletes with the talent, but not the resources, to discover is they've got what it takes to compete at the very top level. He commentated on many of the early London Marathons, and for many will be the voice of British athletics.

The fund works on many levels - it's not paid me a penny and turned a 15 stone slob into a man three stone lighter, who hopes to run a marathon in about 4 hrs and 15mins!

If you'd like to help me raise cash for this fantastic cause, and maybe give London a nod along the way in the year they gave us the Olympics, you can do so at

    http://www.justgiving.com/micksmarathon

Thanks very much. It's really appreciated.
  • Like many of you, I too am running in the Flora London Marathon 2006 for the first time. This will also be my first attempt at a full marathon since my only other outing over the full distance in 1985! That was exactly half my lifetime ago!!

Before I go on to make "my pitch", I have to say how blown away I've been by reading the above accounts of my fellow forumites!

I have so much admiration for the collective goodwill that exists from amongst the running fraternity and beyond, for people who wish to use their good fortune at being able to compete in events such as this in order to help those in need. The generosity of the human spirit is very much in evidence...long may it continue and good luck to you all. I am amongst those who is fortunate enough to be able to try to help others in this way.

My motivation for competing in this event is simple - I am running this in memory of our youngest son, George, whom we sadly and suddenly lost 3 years ago, aged 2 years and 9 months.

George was born with a Congenital Heart Condition known as Fallots Tetralogy which was diagnosed when he was one day old. During the 33 months that followed, George was a regular patient at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool. Despite his difficulties, George was a happy child with a cheery disposition.

During the turbulent days when George was an in-patient, we discovered and came to rely on the support that was offered to us by Ronald McDonald House (RMH) at Alder Hey. RMH is a real "home from home" that provides free of charge accommodation for the families of critically ill children. RMH receives no grants or government funding. RMH have only 5 Golden Bond runners in this years FLM, and I am proud to be supporting the House and giving a bit back for the help that has been provided for us.

If you feel that you can help me to raise some much needed funds, please visit my on-line fundraising page,

    www.justgiving.com/christopherboynton

No matter how much you are able to give, your donation will go to a very good cause.

    Thanks

    Hi

I am running my first marathon, the FLM, for a charity which has a real personal significance. The Mental Health Foundation is the UK's leading charity working in mental health and learning disabilities. With pioneering research and community projects it aims to improve the support available for people with mental health problems and people with learning disabilities.

I have had bouts of depression all my adult life, which I have learned to deal with thanks to the support of my husband, family and some very dear friends. Medication has also helped, and the best medication I have found has been running. It lifts my mood, helps my self esteem and gets me on my feet and moving when sometimes I'd rather hide from the world. Running to raise money to help other people like me is my chance to give back something for all the personal and professional support I have received over the years, so please dig deep and sponsor me online now at justgiving.com/shonacampbell.

  • Hi there everyone and anyone

Here's my plea! I am competing in the London Triathlon on the 5th August at the Excel Centre in the Docklands. I am raising money for the World Wildlife Fund (which has a lot of good projects home & abroad to help reduce the effects of Global warming).

I know it is not strictly running but I am primarily a runner, having previuosly completed the NYC 2004 - please take a look at my page at

    www.justgiving.com/janestriathlon

and give anything you can spare. Thank you, you help is greatly appreciated.
  • I've entered this year's Great North Run which is on 1st October 2006. I'm running on behalf of CANCER RESEARCH UK. This is a cause very near to my heart - literally ! 5 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. A very dear friend of mine died from breast cancer a couple of years earlier. She had 2 very young children. Their daddy died a few years later from a heart attack resulting from cancer.

Please help raise money to fund research into finding new treatments and, maybe, one day a cure so that other families can be saved the heart break of losing loved ones...

  • I am running in the Great North Run on 1st October to raise funds for the Downs Syndrome Association (DSA).

I have chosen this particular charity after my son, Alex, was born with Downs Syndrome in May 2006. This brought me in touch with the Charity and the work that they do.

The DSA provides support and information for people with Downs Syndrome and their families, and they were invaluable to my partner and I in the difficult first few weeks after Alex was born.

They strive to improve knowledge of the condition, which affects 1 in every 1000 babies born in the UK, and they respond to over 29,000 telephone enquires every year. The Association is reliant on voluntary donations for over 90% of its income.

You can sponsor me on a DSA approved web page, which will accept donations by credit or debit card. The site uses VeriSign and is totally secure, and the URL is www.justgiving.com/craigt.

All donations, however small, will be very much appreciated.

    Thanks for your time.

    Craig.
