What do people read

I currently only buy RW but I know there are others out there such as Running Fitness. Apart from RW what other mags do people read and are they any different/better than RW. I like RW by the way!Just a question thats all.

I read Running Fitness as well, but nothing else. RF has some interesting stuff in (perhaps more about coaching and the history of the sport than RW) but is very badly edited.
  • Unfortunately the newsagent at work (I work in a hospital) only stocks Running Fitness. From that statement I think you can guess what I think of it. Despite this I do buy it because I need something to read when I go to the loo. However half its contents can be summed up as 'the adventures of the editorial staff'. With pages and pages dedicated to what each memeber of staff has been doing in the past month...almost like a literary version of The Office...but not funny.
I do go out my way sometimes to pick up RW which is miles ahead.
However this forum provides much more for my running needs! Well done to who ever set it up and all the contributors
  • I agree that Running Fitness is nowhere near as good as RW. The race diary section is pretty good, however - better than the RW mag, but not as good as the one on this site.

On holiday I picked up a copy of the Spanish RW. Very enjoyable (as far as my translating allowed), but very different.

Agree with all of the above, in particular what BBB said about the antics of the Running Fitness editorial staff - dead boring! Still, it fills the gap before RW is out again.

I read RW, RF and British Runner every month. Then 220 Tri mag and Athletics Weekly occasionally.

British Runner is excellent as it has the months rankings for all distances in the country.

Out of RW and RF I would say there isn't much difference, some months RW is the better read and other months RF.

I do hate all these double page Nike adds, which is in my opinion a waste of magazine space!
  • Besides RW John and I read Triathlete, and Mountain Biking
  • I'm with Glenn. I look at lots of magazines as part of my job and RF is easily the most badly edited mag I have ever seen. I still buy it every month, but each time I promise I'll never buy it again!

Hilly - without all those ads there'd be no magazine.
  • Mmmmm! Cant see this being the most durable thread somehow given that there only seems to be half a dozen or magazines to choose from. I used to like "On Your Bike" but apparently they couldnt shift enough copies so it ceased.
"Mens Health" what a joke. The same cover, the same contents (how to get perfect abs, great sex!, get that job!) for the past ten years. I inadvertantly bought the same issue twice but I defy anyone to tell one month's from another.

Chimp, we could maybe extend the thread by going completely off topic into non-running mags. Someone out there must be reading Fancy Ferret Fortnightly or You and Your Candelabra. What are the weirdest magazines read by otherwise sane runners?
  • I love 'The Lady' magazine, perhaps because I'm not one!
  • I only read RW but used to get Mens Fitness. Exactly as Chimp says. Abs, sex, job.... yawn!!!! Nothing wrong with any of these of course but a bit boring to write about it every month...

I've flicked through a few of the 'new' magazines for men such as Loaded etc. Pretty much soft porn as far as I can see.....
  • Surprise no-ones mentioned "Trail". I love looking at those walks I know I'm never going to do.
  • I read

    Runners World
    Snowboard UK
    Onboard
    Country Walking
    Nursing Times
    Nursing Standard
    Professional Nurse

and anything else which takes my fancy - this month it's the November Issue of History something or other

    :o)
  • Every month :
    ==========
    Runners World
    Running Fitness
    220 Triathlon
    Cycling Plus

    Occasionally :
    ==========
    Mens Health
    Mens Fitness
    MBR
    TGO

    Will

  • I read RW fairly regularly, but no other fitness-type mags.

In terms of what else do I read, I subscribe to all of the following:

    Wanderlust - excellent travel mag.
Kerrang! - for a weekly dose of HM
The Ties That Bind - Springsteen fanzine
Sproutlore - Robert Rankin fanboy publication

Also, I buy Private Eye all the time, so I suppose it would make sense to subscibe really.

And then I read Credit Today for work purposes.

  • I used to work for Parking Review. Any of you read that?

  • My brother works in PR. He used to think that the magazines on "Have I Got News For You" were made-up, until they showed one that he had worked on...
  • Yep. Parking Review made it on to HIGNFY.
  • but Rob it's gone downhill since you left...
  • I read Runners World and Running Fitness every month, even though I agree that the editing of the latter is excruciating.

Also read the British Medical Journal, the bits of the Lancet and the American medical weekly heavyweights that are online, some of the medical monthlies, and the Sunday Times magazine.

Have bought the occasional copy of Trail but see it as something for my future when the kids are big enough for real walking expeditions.

I dislike the women's glossies immensely. They're basically adverts for consumer lifestyle products of the type that my lifestyle doen't consume, padded out with showy-offy, look-I-can-do-similes-and-stuff diatribes on subjects trivial enough to be dismissed in a couple of sentences.
  • I can't bear woman's glossies either but occasionally get one pushed my way! end up feeling gastly for the rest of the month - they seem to have that effect of somehow making you feel totally inadequite about dress, appearance etc!
    Other than that I read:
    TES
    Scientific American
    biological scientific review
    Running Fitness - once.
Most of above supplied at work.
  • RW, RF, Trail sometimes, it's interesting. Never womens magazines, they are guff.

If I'm feeling clever, new scientist, the economist, and professional journals.
  • Who DOES read women's glossies then?
  • and Runners World of course!!!

    Runner's World,

Student Accountant (well, that's a lie actually - it gets delivered and occasionally I actually remove the plastic cover, even more occasionally I actually read an article),

Running Fitness occasionally, although it's been about 6 months - I was beginning to feel it was a waste of money - much better in the "Today's Runner" days.

Sky magazine - in case I spot a sporting event I just MUST watch.

Sporadic 220, and Cycling Weekly around TdeF time.

    And that's about it.......

    Have you ever read UET?
    Or LTT?
    Or Transit?
    Or GTO?
Ever been to an 'Important One Day Conference'? :-)

I agree that RF was better as Today's Runner, I ceased my TR subscription when it re-branded. I get RW (of course), UltraFit, Crafts, occasionally New Scientist, have got 2 of 4 issues of Personal Trainer (new), occasionally Athletics Weekly. Have to read exciting things like Oftel News for work!
