Thing is, it's not about what's moderate in that sense. Fact is, a pint of lager is 200 calories. Only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take in. That can of lager means you have to run 2 miles at 9min/mile (someone correct my figures if they're not quite right!) just to get to the number of calories consumed in a day where you don't drink. Think about it... If you run 4 miles on a day where you HAVEN'T drunk, you burn so much more than if you run 4 miles on a day where you have drunk/will drink.
If you enjoy the beer and want to keep drinking it, fair play (I'm no saint when it comes to diet/drink) but you'll find it far harder to shift the flab (mine's going nowhere!)
Easier to give up the beer, I do a long run on Sundays, then I run for between 30 and 45 minutes once during the week, this is all I can fit in really, what with 2 kids, a job etc. So best to give up the beer during the week??
A running friend of mine took up running purely because he liked his food and drink and didn't want to give it up. He found that if he ran then he could eat and drink a little.
I thought you liked beer? Is it that you like the taste of the drink, or like getting drunk? 'Cause thems are two TOTALLY different issues... Please don't be offended.
I drink a lot more than you groder but I run at least 4 times a week and do exercise bike and or weights on the others.
I lost my beer gut (it took a couple of years) but my weight loss has bottomed out now so I dont think I will ever quite get a six pack but who cares? Enjoy eating, enjoy drinking AND enjoy running........WHY NOT?
To me there`s nothing worse than an obsessive fitness fanatic.
Suggest you try the Fat Face training technique as I did on Sunday last.
GPSNRS.......(get pissed saturday night run sunday) it`s a gruelling ordeal but it really works!
I was at my fittest when I was running 30 miles p/w but also getting blotto 3x a week! As long as you run more you can drink more! (I am not a qualified medical practitioner and just my opinion!)
Alcohol calories are alcohol calories, and alcohol contains 7 calories per gram (i.e. closer to fat than carbs).
Although here's an interesting article I've just found which suggests that...
...According to conventional wisdom, the infamous "beer belly" is caused by excess alcohol calories being stored as fat. Yet, less than five percent of the alcohol calories you drink are turned into fat. Rather, the main effect of alcohol is to reduce the amount of fat your body burns for energy...
...Rather than getting stored as fat, the main fate of alcohol is conversion into a substance called acetate. In fact, blood levels of acetate after drinking [...] were 2.5 times higher than normal. And it appears this sharp rise in acetate puts the brakes on fat loss.
Interesting stuff, but I'm happy to stick with the moderate intake of strong Belgian beer & red wine, plus ~50 mpw of running and other sweat-inducing activities.
It's like most other things - you need to decide what your goals are and how much of your life do you want to dedicate to it.
If you want a rippling six pack, you're highly unlikely to get it by eating a fry up every day, for example. You're already aware that drinking is not helping with your belly, and you want to get rid of your belly, therefore one fairly obvious solution is to reduce your alcohol intake. If you choose to do that by drinking wine rather than beer, then fair enough, but you probably won't see the same results as if you cut it completely.
Choice is yours - weigh up how much you want to lose the flab against how much you want to keep the drink.
By the way, I'm not meaning to preach - I'm not tee-total or anything.

Alcohol is no good then?
It doesn't help with the belly
But a moderate amount is good for the heart
Thing is I drink a can of lager and usually a bit more every night - this isnt helping is it??
What do we now class as moderate?

I'd rather drink and be happy than not drink and be miserable.
Decision made, then.
Drinking beer + 40-50 miles per week. Weight 11.5 stone and marathon time 3:20.
No beer at all + 40-50 miles per week. Weight 10 stone and marathon time 3:02.
(I'm as miserable as sin mind).
I run for between 30 and 45 minutes once during the week, this is all I can fit in really
Don't cheat on us, if you have time to drink then you have free time then you can run instead of drinking.
Thanks for all that guys
Are we in agreement then that wine has fewer calories??
I never understand this country's fascination with alcohol.

Good idea mate!
