I've been re-reading 'The Hobbit' and the 'Lord of The Rings' trilogy. I first read them when I was about 9, so thought now would be a good time to revisit them.
Just finished the last book, and the final third of the book is taken up with appendices, explaining the 'history' of the books, like prior kings.
It's a work of fiction, FFS! What's the point????

There are sad people who like to read all that sort of thing. They then have it as their Specialist Subject on Mastermind.
My OH likes to read that sort of thing....loves the whole fantasy story telling stuff....terry pratchett etc.......he's not sad!
Its not my cup of tea but each to their own. He enjoys it, not doing anyone any harm so why is he sad?
<tut>
terry pratchett has alzheimers
so enjoy him whilst you can
Tolkien, like CS Lewis was a devout Christian (I believe they studieds at Oxford together), and Lord of the Rings, like The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe is intended as a vehicle for their Christianity.
I sort of see it for TLTWATW but Lord of the Rings is a bit lugubrious for my palate. Bit like the Old Testament really. If you want to be bored rigid with history read that....
'The Hobbit' was great, but the trilogy had too much blank stuff in it for my liking, it just seemed to drag on and on.
I tried to get into Terry Pratchett but never managed it. I know people who love his books, and I don't find any of them sad.
I tried to get into 'White Teeth' by Zadie Smith too. Never managed that either, it's still on the shelf partly-read. And all the reviews raved about it.
(Live Action RolePlay. You dress up & hit people with rubber swords. It's fun).
Will take your word for it, Duck Girl.
"I am theld-Gar, King of the Raal-moof tribe, conqueror of Theldor, crusher of trolls, King of Warriors, kneel beforew me puny Earthling. Tell me, do you knwo of a cure for acne, and don't tell anyone else that i still leave with my Mum and Dad."
And of course it is not sad in any way at all to feel the need to or spend time actually taking the p*ss out of those types!!!
And of course it is not sad in any way at all to blatantly troll.
I feel sorry for you.
