Hello all, ive been running in the gym on the treadmills for about 2-3 months now and am proud as i can now jog steadily for 30 mins whereas before i struggled just walking! (at 24 years of age this was bad)
Only problem is i really want to get out and run but i live in rough part of birmingham (Kitts Green) where i risk being happy slapped or worse run over by a mini motor every time i leave the house. (not happened yet thankfully but only cus my dad has had words some of the neighbours!!)
I do drive which is handy but i never see any joggers about and would have no idea where to go!! So what do i do?
Also different factors come into it such as weather and equipment, what does everybody else wear and take with them?

Hi Sarah,
I think treadmills are really useful for midweek runs. Especially when the nights draw in. In certain areas you are right to be safety conscious. However, nothing beats getting out there and running through a lovely park or along a trail for a longer run. I can do 30 mins on the treadmill and that is my limit. Anything over that it has to be outside. There must be a big park somewhere nearish that you could drive to and do your weekend run/s there. Plenty of peoiple about walking dogs, cycling etc means there are more distractions and helps with safety.
Good Luck,
Norm.
There are pluses and minuses to running on the tread in the air con. If your race is going to be in Sept, then you really need to get outside for at least some of your running because if we have an Indian Summer (and let's face it, we haven't had a British one) the heat will hit you like a brick. Where's the HM? I'm training for Dublin and do not anticipate very warm weather in Ireland at the end of October, but you must allow for everything. Try running in the rain too. It's all good experience!
Honestly, I was really phobic about it and now I'm converted!
Somebody in Brum please help Sarah out with a list of running clubs near Kitts Green please!
I don't know whereabout's in Birmingham Kitts Green is, but there are some very nice parts of Birmingham where you'd be safe running - Edgbaston is the first that springs to mind, Cannon Hill Park, Sutton Park if Kitt's Green is over in that direction and I'm sure there are others, but can't think of them off the top of my head.....If you go to Mapmyrun.com you can search for runs in Birmingham and see what comes up.
Definitely join a running club though. Good luck!
I used to live in a pretty grotty part of London, but the scallies were never up and about at 6:30 in the morning.
I would also join a running club. It was the best thing I ever did and they cater for all abilities. It's also fun and people are very welcoming.
I just did a Google search and these came up, however I have no idea where you are in Birmingham. Not my area.

Even if their mouths are smeared in choc.....
lol LB - I guess that makes them easy to recognise!
Sarah, I would suggest that you start another thread with a more specific title. Something like 'safe places to run in birmingham' might attract peeps who can help.
FWIW, I agree with LB that dreadies are the work of the devil
Im going to join Centurions hopefully on Tuesday, they r a bit closer than Bournville and trust me when i say i should be laying off chocolate!!! lol
Thanks for all the help guys, let u know how i get on
Hope you discover the outside. I'm a treadmill fanatic- hopefully moving towards the outside.
Hope it goes well. Join up with a good running club
