  • I am running my first marathon - lucky enough to get a ballot place but making it worthwhile by running for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Just 2 weeks after I decided (completely ay random I might add) to run for Macmillan my sister-in-law was diagnosed with breast & bone cancer - so the choice was both fortuitous & ironic at the same time!

I want to raise as much as I can for this fantastic charity, so please sponsor me at...

    www.justgiving.com/macmillancancersupport

...and help to make the lives of cancer sufferers and their families a litt more bearable.

    Many thanks.

This will be my 4th ever marathon and 20 yrs since I last ran London (1988). I did a bit of running in the late 80's and did the old defunct Glasgow marathon (1987) followed by London the year later. In my second running re-incarnation (20 years later) I did Windermere last year.

Im the same as you Rosie and running for HEART.

Both my dad and my wifes dad died from heart attacks with high cholesteral being one of the big factors. Mrs K's step dad has had several by-pass surgeries, and again a contributing factor has been IHC.

IHC isnt a well publicised problem and so HEART being the main highlighted charity at FLM should recieve good coverage which should help to raise awareness.

I've done the charity sponsor thing to death (no pun intended) in the past and am struggling with the amount this year, so if anyone is feeling generous please click on the link and make a donation.

Looking forward to seeing all the other HEART runners in the tent afterwards.

My dad died of lung cancer in 1996, when I was 16. It was a real shock to us - he died within weeks of diagnosis and left a very big hole in my life.

Macmillan nurses helped out my family a lot. I never realised how much until I was speaking to my mum about running for Macmillan. She talked about how the Macmillan nurses gave so much useful help and support, that they gave her and dad hope at a point when they'd really reached rock bottom.

Macmillan nurses do so much for cancer patients and their family, from financial help to small practical things that you wouldn't even think of, like a comfy chair that they lent my dad to relax in after chemo sessions.

Now I want to say thank you to them by running London marathon in memory of Dad and raising money for Macmillan. If you can help at all by sponsoring me, even a tiny amount (or a big amount!), then I would really appreciate it image. Thank you so much for your support and wish me luck in getting round the marathon! (Those who know how little natural running talent I have: you'll know that 26.2 miles is really going to be tough for me...image)

  • Hey all you fellow mad runners .image..I will be there on the London start line with thousands of others but then, just two weeks later, my epic journey begins....I will be running from Lands End to John O'Groats over a period of 10 weeks.  No support, no back-up crew....just me, myself and I....I really am insane!  Why you ask?  because I can...and many others can't and that's a good enough reason for me.  If you think that this is a courageous enough effort then it'd be great if you would sponsor me....

Happy running and good luck everyone in London....may you achieve your goals

  • Hello all.  Like the rest of you, you will find me somewhere on the starting line at the marathon this year.  However, for me, the fact I am even attempting this is a huge accomplishment as I wasn't even running recreationally until last Autumn.

You may well ask why someone with no running experience at all would decide to attempt such a gruelling race and there are two answers.  Firstly, it is simply to prove to myself that I can and to push myself further than ever before.  Secondly, I will be running for the British Heart Foundation in memory of my grandfather who died of a heart attack last year.  I want to raise as much as i can for this fantastic charity to try and prevent others from having to go through the pain of heart disease or the loss of someone close to them due to heart disease.

If you could please visit my fundraising page and give what you can.  www.justgiving.com/robertgough

    Thank you.

  • Hi, 2009 pitch already.

My husband and I (sound like the queen) are running the 2009 FLM for a charity called Regain.

This charity supports inividuals who have become tetraplegic through a sporting or leisure accident.  Which means that basically anyone of us could need them if we were unlucky enough to have an accident.

As most of you on here prob know I run regularly, but my husband has never run before, in fact he is Devons strongest man, and as such is built like a brick s**t house.  This is going to be one hell of a challenge for him, but he is the most enthusiastic person I have ever come across.  What he lacks in running experience he more than makes up for in determination.

We really need your help here, but REGAIN need it more.

Many thanks.  (you will love the picture)

    RUN FAT BOY RUN

  • We are not far off our first £1000 would be great if we could reach it before the end of the month.  Know this is a daft request but if anyone has a spare tenner or more please go to our page above and sponsor us. Thanks
  • The address is above.

We are running for the Air ambulance (details in link at justgiving) I am sure we would all like to think these guys would be able to get to any of our loved ones if ever needed.

However just to keep the helicopter in fuel will cost an extra 140k due to increases in oil pricest. So please if you feel you can spare some of your hard earned cash we might be able to reach our target you will with out doubt be saving a life.

I know the requests are never ending but please take a look at least. None of the guys were runners 16 weeks ago when I talked them into running the event.

    Thanks for looking

  • After years of doing nothing, I started running at lunch time with a few work colleagues and I am now taking part in the London Marathon 09.

I am running for an international charity called:

    WaterAid

Safe water and sanitation close to people's homes have far reaching and wide ranging benefits which extend way beyond the expected improvements to health and the reduction in time spent collecting water.

Their projects enable WaterAid and its partners use practical solutions to provide safe water, effective sanitation and hygiene education to the world's poorest people, enabling communities to achieve a better quality of life and escape the spiral of poverty.

For more information on WaterAid, please check out the website below:

  • NI RUNNER TO MAKE HISTORY FOR CHARITY!!

    Hi Guys,

I'm here to try and drum up some business for a friend of mine; Jonny Steede.

YOU don't run hundreds of miles to give up on the last 26 - some gallows humour used to reassure those who are nervous about running a marathon - but one Ballymena man is attempting to run upwards of 150 miles in the days immediately before this year's Dublin Marathon.

Jonny Steede from Galgorm in Ballymena, N Ireland will spend four days running from Belfast to Dublin, taking one day's rest and then running the Dublin Marathon.

He'll be averaging 40 miles per day, passing through Lisburn,
Lurgan, Portadown, Banbridge, Newry, Drogheda and a whole host of smaller towns to collect donations for three charities, and once in Dublin there's the small matter of a marathon.

Not surprisingly Jonny will go into the record books with this mammoth challenge, which starts on October 22, launching at 10am at Northern Ireland Children's Hospice. To give to this worhwhile cause please goto www.thelongrundown.org and click on the "Donate Now" button on the homepage which will bring you to the justgiving website.Thank you all in advance....
  • Obese people can't run marathons...

Well, lets hope this one can. I've been training for the London Marathon 2009 since December 2007!

I haven't lost weight image I'm still 30 KG over weight. But, undeterred...I continue in my quest.

But I can now keep up with my rather tall husbaned when he walks down the street...mostly.

I'm running the London Marathon for a very deserving charity, VICTA. They provide visually impaired children with grants to buy specialist equipemtn, like braile machines. Sinple things, that make such a big difference in the lives of these kids, and their faimilies.

If you can see your way to a small donation, it will be very useful to this small charity!

    Thank you for you time.

  • Hi All,

This year im running in Nessie "the great big pink Wellchild" Nurse, it's about 12ft tall and weigh's in at about 2 1/2 stones. That's got to be worth some sponsorship alone.........this is a great charity that provides nursing care to sick children and their families, any amount of sponsorship really does help so if you can please dig deep...these really are children in need....check out my costume anyway...

  • I'll be doing the London marathon in 2009 - and I don't run! I'm going from nothing to 26.2 miles in the next few months and I'm completely determinded to finish!!

I'm running for my work charity team and in turn I'll be raising money for a total of 6 charities which gives me such inspiration to finish. They are

Marie Curie Cancer Care, Childline, The Calvert Trust, The Foundation for Conductive Education, Canine Partners for the Disabled and Hope and Homes for Children.

I'm struggling for support from people at the moment (in a believing in me kind of way)  image as I'm not a small girl, am not a natural runner and have never ever done anything like this before but so long as hubby keeps coming out with me on his bike while I run then all will be well!!!

Thanks for reading, happy running everyone!

  • I'm running the 2009 London Marathon for MS Society.

I've chosen this charity as my uncle was diagnosed with progressive MS nearly 30 years ago.  Over this time I have slowly seen him lose his mobility.  He is now paralysed from the neck down and is beginning to lose the use of his facial muscles.  Despite this, I have never known him complain.

MS Society provides support to all those whose lives are affected by MS as well as investing in research for treatments and ultimately a cure.

If you would like to help me help MS Society then please visit my fundraising page at www.justgiving.com/kelly_williams

    Thankyou.

  • Hi, we, (my husband and I) are running for Sense in the London Marathon 2009.

We chose this charity as I work with people who are hard of hearing and wanted to be able to do something for those that I am unable to help with hearing aids.

The reason I chose Sense is because I once read an advert that said a deaf and blind child can be petrified by even the touch of their mother as it startles them due to not being able to hear or see.

Sense are a fantastic charity, and although I am unable to donate loads of money to them.... I can do the next best thing, and RUN!

If you would like to help us, please visit our fundraising page on

    Thank you very much

  • Cancer affects millions of people and its not just those diagnosed with it that need help. Macmillan cancer support do so much whether it be providing home care or some one at the end of a phone to talk to that really knows how your feeling. I ask you to give as much as you can comfortably afford to help them make a real difference. And remember every penny you give helps people in this country. It could even be someone you know and love that needs Macmillan’s help.

my mother in law died on the 1st July 2008 just 16 days after becoming a granmother for the 1st time. i'm a non runner who is doing this to say thankyou to macmillan for providing us with a safe CLEAN hospital where we could take our baby May-Rose to spend time with her beautiful granmother.

  • The Liverpool Santa Dash is the biggest, best and funniest fun run around – but with a serious purpose – to raise money for charity. I am running to raise funds for the Shyira Trust – a small charity based in the North-West which sends ALL its funds to Shyira in North-West Rwanda.

If you are running the Santa Dash, please consider running in aid of the Shyira Trust, by going to www.bmycharity.com/shyiratrust and following the 'Become an online fundraiser' link.

If you are NOT running it (and why not ?) then please think about sponsoring me by going to www.bmycharity.com/petermorgansd08

In either case, if you want more details I have a blog at www.running4rwanda.com

  • Firstly apologies for posting this as I absolutely hate asking people for donations, especially as there are so many other people on here, all equally deserving of your sponsorship money. But, if you don't ask you don't get and I am exploring every avenue I can to reach my target.Subject to raising £1500 for charity, I have a guaranteed place in the 2009 London marathon. The charity I hope to be running for is The Anthony Nolan Trust, a charity that helps people with leukaemia. This is a charity that I have been involved with for about 10 years, since a family friend unfortunately died of leukaemia. To find out more information about the charity, or to become a bone marrow donor, please visit http://www.anthonynolan.org.uk As I don’t actually do much running (none in fact), and as £1500 is a lot to raise, I have decided to start both the training and the hunting for sponsorship very early. I would be very grateful therefore if you could spare the time and money to visit my fund raising page at http://www.justgiving.com/peterwray  and make a donation. All donations will be very gratefully received and will be going to help an extremely good cause.

Please pass this on to anyone else you think may wish to sponsor me.

  • Does anyone know if there are any charities who sill have Gold Bond places available?

I am desperate for a place in London 2009 and have so far been unsuccessful where ever I have tried. I realise I have left it late to try for a place, long story!!!!

    Any help gratefully received.

  • Dorian - a charity near me is looking for FLMers, wanting you to raise a minimum of £1000 which I believe is quite a bit less than some charities want. They provide help and support for carers in Leicestershire. It only went on their website a week ago, so they've probably got some places left.

  • I'm running for Action On Pre_eclampsia. Pre eclampsia is the most common pregnancy complication and in the UK alone around 6 women and 500-600 babies die every year as a result of it ,globally it is estimated that 1 woman every 6minutes dies due to this condition. Anyone who wants to sponsor me can do so at

  • Hey there, Hi there, Ho there

I'm running for the Rural Housing Trust for the 2009 FLM. They do some wonderful work, but why should you pick mine over anyone elses equally worthy causes this time around? Because I'm tempting your inner greed, my dears, and I'm organizing a prize draw.

    Here are the prizes!

    (a) 2 tickets to see Jude Law in Hamlet [11 Aug]
    (b) £40 gift certificate to Liberty
    (c) £40 TopShop Voucher
    (d) £40 Amazon vouchers
    (e) £40 Threshers Voucher

Prize Draw tickets are £5 each and 5 for £15. You can donate online at my Bmycharity page link below [make sure to tick GiftAid] and then email me at ryan@porterwalmart.co.uk to allocate your tickets to whichever prize(s) you'd like.

Prizes will be drawn the night before the Marathon, 25th April 2009 by a very giddy and nervous first time marathon runner!

  • I'm running with my mate for Shelter. We chose this as we run through London and are struck by the large problem with homelessness and poor housing. As doctors we also experience firsthand the knock on problems this causes. As the credit crunch increases, Shelters work to keep families in their homes will become increasingly important.

We are aiming to raise £3500. If you want to help you can do so via www.justgiving.com/luciandgemma

  • I'm running for Shelter Cymru.

Why?  Last year my landlord suddenly decided to sell up and I lost my home of over 12 years.  I had little time to sort anything out, had no money saved up to cover moving or a bond for a new rental property which meant for a few weeks last year I could not even afford to buy food.  A year later I am still in temporary accommodation I can't afford, so I'm still struggling financially despite being classed as 'priority: homeless' on the waiting lists and I'm still suffering a huge amount of stress and uncertainty.  Without my family stepping in to help me out now and then I dread to think what would have happened to me.  I was forced to take time off work, my health was already poor but the sheer stress of it all has caused more setbacks.  I was due to run FLM last year but I was too ill to train as all this happened in January and February last year, so Shelter Cymru kindly deferred my place for me in the belief that I would achieve my goal despite everything.

I have worked hard all my adult life after finishing university.  Homelessness is not something that only society's 'drop-outs' experience.  Shelter Cymru offer free legal advice, a drop-in advice centre, out of hours advice lines and can help with identifying the best way forward.  They can also help if your landlord is not carrying out repairs or if there is a dispute over rent.  They can offer budgeting advice for those struggling financially and can signpost to other agencies that might be able to assist.  Their education and lobbying programmes are extremely acitive and they will continue their work in the belief that everyone deserves a safe, secure, affordable home.

Unlike Shelter in England, Shelter Cymru does not have it's own Just Giving page (it's too expensive for them) so if anyone wants more info or feels they would like to make a donation please message me.

  • Hi, I'm not really called Basil Brush (no, really), but I am running FLM for Asthma UK.

I'm not the world's speediest runner, so I won't be breaking any records - but that's not really the point. Those of you who know me personally will know that I have moderate-severe asthma myself, and it's going to be a huge personal achievement for me to run 26.2 miles. As well as that, though, it will be helping to raise funds for research into asthma for those millions of people country- and world-wide who suffer with this condition. The money raised will also help to fund the Kick-Asthma holidays, Asthma UK's residential holidays for children with asthma, which I volunteer on. The psychological and health benefits that these holidays confer on the children who go on them cannot be underestimated, especially for those whose asthma is at the more severe end of the spectrum.

Although many people live with asthma and it does not trouble them, for a significant number of people it is a daily struggle, and sometimes literally a fight for breath and life. Asthma can kill, and should not be underestimated.

  • imageHello everyone!!image

Sorry to bother everyone, but I'm really stuck!

I'm a new runner with my first race coming up in May the 16th. I'm running for cancer research uk on this particular day because it would of been my mother's 51st birthday, but unfortunatly she died in 2005 suffering with ovarian cancer. You see i have alctually lost both my parents to cancer, and has been my ambition to run for cancer research so that my kids dont have to go through the heartache of watching anyone close to them suffer. Thank you for your time and sorry again for asking money.
