I got sick of Map My Run when they started charging for premium membership. This is what I don't like
1 When you use follow roads it doesn't let you run up a one way street the wrong way. 2 It doesn't have public footpaths and bridleways. Hence it's a pain to plot off road runs. 3 If you have saved a route but want to make a copy of it so you can change the middle it (say to add a loop) you can't. You have to start again.
All alternatives seem to be similar - does anyone know differently?
Simon Richards I'm not sure about 3, but they do have 1 and 2.
And of course it is free.
I use this version too. I haven't had a problem with it, although you can't add loops to a route, therefore have to start again. But I can save my routes using the free membership bit, which is useful because I use the better ones repeatedly and never remember how many miles they were.
It's pretty accurate when compared against Garmin. In fact, more so when compared against my 305, which loses GPS alot.
Hi. this site works really well. I've just made a route but how do I export it to my Garmin 305? I pressed the Export GPX button but how do I move that onto device? apologies for super dumb question!
I have only just started running really but I find gb.mapometer.com very easy to use especially with option for route to "follow roads automatically" and "close loop".
Does anyone use runtastic for android? It used to work great on my htc desire but has stopped logging distance etc (yes gps locator is switched on). I have tried to contact the runtastic advise but just get an auto response that says to use their forum. Unfortunately I cant remember login info so cant use forum.
Is there a better free app for android? I am a bit of a techno phobe so the simpler the better really. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Mike, I am using Adidas miCoach which is a free Android App. Seems to work just fine for me, it is multi-discipline as well so you can use for Cycling and Nordic Skiing (if that's your thing) amongst others.
Run Keeper is one of the best I have used - tried adidas micoach nike and mapmyrun and Run Keeper stands out. Very easy to use, includes coaching, you can amend and upload route. Share with your running buddies or street team. Definately recommend.
You can also track your progress with the routes on your smart phone, upload general exercise, manual entry or just run and see where the mood takes you. Can also be used for cycling, walking etc.

I haven't tried myself, but I guess you save it somewhere handy, then use Garmin Training Centre and use the file import course function.

G map pedometer
You have to double click rather than the single click on MMR. It is getting bloody hard to use isn't it?
click "Start recording" first, then double click on your start point

Try this, Ive used it for ages.
Tried the route measurer on fetch? It's cheap & cheerful (ie straightforward?)
Thank you all so much for those suggestions - will try one for my run this morning.
And am glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the new format for mapmyrun!
Good running
use this one, it even follows the profile of the road with all the bends turns etc and it's free

Another vote for gmap-pedometer from me.

i agree, mapmyrun used to be about the running, maaaan.
i use google maps for most things. as apple says, "there's a [widget] for that". see instructions here:

I prefer the UK version of MMR, they used to have a similar name but changed it to avoid confusion.
They are http://gb.mapometer.com/en/

Ooh, I'm liking the road-following thing!
I notice also (with gmap pedometer) you can turn it off for one click, to override it (eg if you cut across country) and then turn it on again
