If anyone fancies a good race abroad how about giving the YAU a go in 2004. Details can be found at www.arcticultra.de I did the 300 mile race this year and it was brilliant. Having done races in Morocco, Alaska and Jordan before this one knocks spots off all of them for difficulty - totally different league. There are so many extreme races about that I find it hard to justify going bck to repeating a race - but this one is worth it and my entry has gone back in for the 2004 300 miler. It is well organised and not for the faint hearted.

Did you have your kit in a ruck sac or one of those sleds you drag behind you?
What footwear did you use?
Well done for completeing - wasnt there quite a high drop out rate for the 300 miler
All the kit was pulled on a sled - with the exception of a small rucksack which held my camelback and a duvet jacet which insulated the camelback. The drop out rate as a percentage was high with only 4 runners out of the 8 starters finishing. In the 100 miler I think 17 out of 19 starters finished. I used nike Pegasus trail shoes - but in Alaska the year before I used normal road shoes. It sounds ridiculous - but as long as you keep moving your feet stay warm - I also used some Neo overshoes which held with the insulation - also kept the feet dry in overflow and in addition have a large foot print which helps going through soft snow.
As far as finances are concerned -its a lot cheaper than the MdS - but that doesnt take into account some of the specialist kit involved. In my opinion the YAU is a far better race - but you will have needed to have done some of the less extreme races first - as without doubt it is a bugger. If I hadnt done the MdS/Iditasport/JDC there is no way I would have done the 300 - the 100 is not a problem.

There is a 100 mile race and in 2004 there is going to be marathon distance as well - you fancy coming along??

Last year both eventrate and sleepmonster carried full once or twice daily updates. The official site www.arcticultra.de I think will also carry updates - but wasnt as up to date as the other 2 last year.
However, I recommend you save your pennies and come and do it - then you can watch it 24/7 live. I reckon it would be right up your street.

I followed the event this year and wanted to go for the 300 miler in Jan- unfortunately I have been unable to financially.
I'll get there eventually
