I just reckon that Xmas is the awful season - mainly becuase everyone feels that they have to put so much effort in!
Why not do something simple and just enjoy the time with the family?
Go for chocolate mousse or ice cream or something? I much prefer a hot Christmas, becuase we spend the time outside in the sun and swimming and it's far too hot for anyone to slave in the kitchen
Rich christmas cake, packed with fruit, orange zest, molasses and dark sugar
Mind you, we abandoned the traditional Christmas dinner years ago - we'll be going for a curry on Christmas eve, then Christmas day everyone can just graze and booze as they wish. No stress, no kitchen ban - happy day!
We made a nice mince-meat lattice tart for christmas dinner last year, that went down quite well.
We also had the same deliberation over this years main course, we've gone for individual beef wellingtons after two very successfull trial runs!!!! YUM YUM.
I dont like Christmas pudding or mince pies Don't mind cake but rarely have it. . When I was 11 we made mince pies at school, thought the white bit looked nice from the mince meat, so I ate it. Turned out to be lard or suet I was nearly sick right there. Never touched them since. I get pud for those who want it and I have Belgian choc meringue roulade from Morrisons
Christmas cake is one of the few cakes I ever cook.......mine was made a month ago and I can't wait
I love christmas cake...........it weighs over 5lb without the icing or mazipan
and christmas day has to be turkey and all the trimmings...presents then church then making christmas dinner....I love making it and having a few glasses whilst I do..........although I always cook the turkey the day before so that there is plenty of room in the oven for everything else...........no stress no hassle
Given the choice I'd go for all the traditional stuff but I'm not too fussed. I'd rather people had some time to relax than stressed over making the perfect meal - unless they really enjoy the cooking of course.
Maybe i don't get stressd because I don't lay it out all pretty in serving dishes etc.i just serve it up on the plates.......and get the family to help...If it got me stressed I wouldn't make it
oh yes and then go to a race on boxing day so that i know its time to stop celebrating
usually christmas pudding - home made to a recipe that I inheritted, dates from the 1900s, has rather a lot of alcohol in it. They get made in bacthes about once every 5 years. Byt the end they have matured something marvellous. Flaming brandy on the top, just in case there isn't enough booze on the plate!
I love cooking christmas dinner, certainly don't find it stressful - my idea of fun is to have a house full and feed them! It allows me to exercise my organised self and strutt around self-importantly. Bliss!!
Anyway, we've had a yule log for dessert before now, (basically swiss roll with a holly sprig on top!) or ice cream.
One of my favourite christmas meals was spag bol and Sarah Lee chocolate cake. Sam was 1, Charlotte 2 and a half and we were of for the works on Boxing day to the in laws.
I do put things into pretty dishes, Seren but enjoy the whole process.popsider, we write a time plan and love doing it
This year my eldest daughter's Swedish bf will be with us
Even my MOTHER has cottoned on to the fact that no one's bothered about Christmas cake and it's always mostly still in the tin come July, so she's decided not to do one this year.
