Does anyone use nasal strips? I'm doing a marathon in the spring and wondered if they will help. If you have experience of using them, did they work for you or just look silly?
It's not the fact of looking daft, but looking fast. I just presume anyone wearing one is a whippet so I could never get away with one as I'm a plodder!
using a nasal strip in an effort to increase the volume of O2 inhaled is a great concept....
......except for the fact that most athletes open their mouths when they require more O2, rather than keep it closed, doggedly breathing through their nose and wishing "if only i'd stuck a plaster on my nose!"
O.K. people, let us not forget that the nose serves three functions in breathing: it filters particles such as pollen, moistens it and warms it to body temperature before it reaches the bronchial tubes and the lungs. If you have asthma there is no worse thing than cold, dry air especially with pollen in it and as an inflammatory condition it also means you are likely to have problems breathing through your nose. I have not tried nasal strips for running but I have tried them for sleeping and sometimes just around the house when I don't care what I look like and can honestly say they make breathing a lot easier, and I am totally willing to believe that it will help in running (for some people at least and especially in the right - or rather wrong - conditions).
Lol yeah, only saw the date after posting! Millsy, just felt the need to put on a nasal strip (I mostly just use them for sleeping) and then remembered that I had seen Meb Keflezighi (recent winner of the Boston marathon) wearing one in the picture on his Wikipedia page so thought I'd do a quick google search to see if they were any use for running.
I use nasal strips for both exercise and sleeping. It helps open up your airways, so you can take more air in. They have stopped my snoring and I actually feel like I am getting a better sleep.
I tried a few nasal strips and brought them from eBay. Most of them where useless but I found one seller who has the genuine product rather than copies and they are amazing.
Check them out, and they are not expensive at all so its always worth a try to see if they work for you - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-200-BETTER-BREATH-NASAL-STRIPS-Reg-Large-RIGHT-AID-TO-STOP-ANTI-SNORING-/142457894859?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

I tried one once, seemed ok although it fell off when I started sweating badly.
Have seen Paula R wear one.
try some and make your own mind up
There is a pic in RW of the NYC Mara winner and he is wearing one.
Who knows eh ?
excellent - I'll go get some and blame you if I don't win
They have no effect whatsover.
It doesn't matter how much O2 your nose can hoover up - it's the body's ability to utilise it that counts.
I think the snoring ones work though
FB - I am not suggesting it, I am guaranteeing it !
And the lottery.

FWIW - I've used them when I had a bit of a cold - and they do seem to make it a lot easier to breathe through the nose.
But as people say - who does that when running ?
Paula also wore titanium bangles and compression socks as well as these.
