  • It looks magical, a proper snowy christmas!

Were still waiting for "proper" snow.

Been out skiing twice today in the field opposite our house.

(still not run since Dec 23rd though!)

  • Still good cross training Higs, and NO I am NOT jealous................much!!! lol
  • Anyone managed a 'proper' run yet?  I'm still on the treadmill which is ok, but I'd love to get out.  10k this morning.  Slow.  Am struggling a bit at the moment.  No clue why (although wine, beer and an extra 1000 calories a day over christmas can't help!)

Did 5miles (that's 8k for the continentals amongst us) on the tready yesterday. Apart from the utter tedium it went fine but my foot problems were back this morning. On the plus side it meant that it was possible to locate the source fo the problem rather than the more general pain previously. It seems that the issue is with my plantar fascitis at the point it attaches to the big toe.

  • Blizzard conditions here yesterday, wanted to run but was a rest day.... and legs felt tired, so I rested. Today the snow has  frozen and is deadly, so wishing now that I had run yesterday!! image

Higs well done on 5 miles on the tready, I couldn't do that.... Good luck with sorting the foot, hopefully now you have pinpointed the area of pain more closely you will get it sorted. I have X-line inserts in my trainers, which helped to sort my PF, the lady that sorted my PF said it would be a good idea to wear them in my "day shoes". Reason being that we all have the support etc in our trainers and then wear very casual shoes with little or no support... exacerbating the PF. As she is a seasoned marathon runner/ sports injury specialist and has suffered with Pf herself I would go with it, touchwood, her suggestions sorted my problems.

    Sorry for the ramble!

It's a long, long time since I've done that kind of distance on the tready. I don't know about you but the ones I use have a big red 'Stop' button that gets bigger and bigger the further you run.

Podiatrist feels that my foot problems are due to having a short, high foot and pronating. Something about the foot being 'locked' during parts of my stride when it should be mobile. This placing more stress on the big toe joint. So orthotics for me.

More drama though... had an accident on Saturday night which left me with a small nick on my calf. cleaned it up and went to bed as it wasn't bleeding any more. Woke up about 3:30am Sun morning to find myself lying in a pool of blood with a proper arterial squirter. Ambulance man reckons ~1- 1.5litres of blood lost. He put a pressure dressing on which stopped the bleeding, then I had a couple of hours in hospital on O2 before the docs tied it off with a single stitch. Been feeling like cr#p since, probably due to blood loss so no running for a while. In fact my big concern is re-stocking on red blood cells before I go skiing weekend after next. I don't fancy being anaemic at 3330m.

Ho hum - good job there's still plenty of time to go!

  • Jes' Higs.  You OK?  Rest up this week!  Just one week.  Nothing's worth getting splattered for..
  • Bliddy hell (((Higs)))

Look after yourself, and do rest up. x

    Righty-ho

Feeling a bit better and tempted by the gym this eve and, if that goes alright, a run at the weekend.

Between the bike crash, the skiing, the icy pavements and the exsanguination my training's taken a bit of a knock so I've dropped the Stafford Half from my list of races in the run up for the 'Dam. Definitely going to do the Alsager 5 (assuming I come back from my next skiing hols in one piece). I think I'm entered in the Leeds Half and am definitely entered in the Freckleton Half too.

  • Evening all!

    Hope your healing well Higs.

  • How you going Higs?  Everyone?

After a Christmas of little exercise and over indulgence I've managed the gym almost every day the last couple of weeks.  Not big distances, but some good sessions.  Am behind for an april marathon (was thinking Rotterdam), but there's one called the Maas Marathon in May.  Possible?!

    OKish here.

I tried a run the other day but it didn't go well. Been out on the mountain bike tonight round Macc Forest which was fun but I was below par. It's quite easy to judge on a bike in that I know what gear I use to go up various hills - tonight I was a couple of gears down. I don't know if that's due to Xmas podge, lack of recent training with one thing and another, lack of red blood cells or some other random factor. I'm not going to fret about it though - skiing next week so I'll pick things up again when I get back.

    Brief progress report....

Ran yesterday without any pain but have hurty foot today. It was a locum physio this morning who agreed with my normal physio that it's all to do with mobility of my big toe joint. But she manipulated it rather than massaged it and has now strapped my foot up to support the joint - apparently the joint is dropped which is what's locking it.

Gym after work and then I'm off skiing for a week - I shall trynot to eat half my bodyweight in melted cheese. running starts in earnest when I get back.
  • Forward progress at least Higs, have another fantastic week skiing, hope the weather is good for you. Enjoy!

    H,

A fine day's skiing today under blue skies. Followed by a swim and sauna. Now halfway down a pre-dinner beer. I'm sure it's all good mara training - possibly not the beer.

Managed my first (relatively) long run on monday.  On the treadmill of course due to the ice.  Still... 10 miles.  My legs are still stiff!! Working my way to the first mara of the year, Maas Marathon, May 9th image

    How's everyone else this week?

  • H,

my longest run this year has been 7 miles, but I am not planning on a May marathon, have a half at the end of May so have plenty of time for that! Admire you for being able to do 10 on a treadmill, I don't think I could.

Wonder if Higs is back from skiing?

  • Well TB I don't have a TV at home (Dutch TV worthless and can't get BBC), so if I plug in to the TVs on the treadmill I'm ok.  If there was no TV though I don't know what I'd do....

    Sadly yes.

Went for a run yesterday and did a massive 3 miles - first run for ages and it was unpleasant.

Physio tomorrow is a mix of good and bad. Foot good, knee bad.

Alsager 5 on Sunday if it kills me.

  • Morning all.

    H. I save the boring telly for doing the ironing! LOL

Higs, welcome back. Hope its just niggles from not having run for a while? Paws crossed.

Rest day for me today, hoping to do 7 or 9 tomorrow depending how tired I feel!!

    And it probably would have.

I'm going to get grumpy now. I hope H backs me up but I'm normally quite a chirpy chap but between injury, accident, illness and skiing*, I reckon I've run three times in 2010, two of which were on the tready. Now I've got manflu (sinuses, snotty nose and sore throat). The knee thing is a ski injury and not serious - physio reckons I've not done any of the typical skiing bad knee things but have tweaked one of the muscles where it comes up my shin and attaches to the bottom of the knee. In fact she reckons running will be good for it.

CBA driving over to Alsager to cough and spit my way round a race but will try to get out for a plod later.

As the great Tony Blair once said "WMD in 45 minutes"

or was it "Things can only get better"

     .

(*OK - I can't complain about too many skiing hols. It's not like I was forced to go)
