Bad luck Sharon. My son ruptured his achilles skiing a couple of years ago. The good news is that you WILL run again (he's doing London marathon this year) - but you need to stay really positive and be patient. It took 6 months before he was back to running properly again.
There are different views on when to start weight bearing and doing exercises. I guess you have to be guided by your doctor - and there's loads of info if you google.

thanks for that, I plan to use bike and gym first but if I can look forward to running again after just six months, I feel better already.
