  • Riley was diagnosed with Tetrology of Fallots with Major Arterial Pulmonary Collateral Artery (MAPCAs) when he was 6 months old and underwent open heart surgery, which lasted around 9 hours and spent several days in intensive with his chest cavity left open in case of swelling around the heart, but was soon closed a day or 2 after.

Riley has had a number of surgical procedures 5 in total throughout his nearly 3 years of life, which was not just for his heart. Riley has to be reviewed by his Cardiologist on a 6 monthly period, as ongoing open heart surgery is required throughout the rest of his life.

When babies and children have such conditions it effects them in all kinds of ways, Riley never sat up on his own till 14 months old and his physiotherapist was even unsure if he'd crawl let alone walk due to his lack of gross motor skills. But Riley proved them all wrong he is walking, but was also diagnosed with Hyperflexibilty of all his joints and needs to still have physio for his balance and co-ordination. Riley is still unable to walk long distances without becoming breathless and is still on medication for his heart, lungs and weight gain.

So David Clarke & Terry Edmunds are running in the Great Midlands Fun Run (8.5miles) on the 6th June 2010 to help raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Who have helped and supported since Riley was born.

  • Hi,

My girlfriend Kirsty and I are running/walking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks on the 10th of July. We are aiming to complete the challenge in under 12 hours.

We are doing this to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Action.  This cause is very close to our hearts as  Kirsty's mum is undergoing treatment for this disease, and has done so (other than a remission period in 2008/9) since being diagnosed on Christmas Eve 2007.

Ovarian cancer is the fourth largest cause of cancer deaths in women in the UK yet relatively few people know about it.  Ovarian Cancer Action is seeking to promote knowledge of the symptoms amongst women and health care professionals.

Ovarian cancer kills 12 women a day in the UK and greater awareness of the early signs will lower this number.

If you would like to sponsor us, or simply to learn more about ovarian cancer, then please go to www.justgiving.com/kirsty-richard

    Many thanks

  • Hi,

I’m doing the Olympic triathlon at the Gay Games in Cologne in August and raising funds for three charities:

1.) an orphanage and Montessori school in Port-au-Prince, Haiti

2.) Medica Mondiale, an organisation supporting traumatised women in war and crisis zones

    3.) LGBT youth work

You find donation details, a lot of information on the charities and a regular blog on my project website: http://www.charity-triathlon.eu/

It will be my first Oly distance race, and I won’t deny I’m oscillating between nervous and terrified. Feedback, encouragement – and donations, too – are all immensely welcome. Thank you!

  • Hi I'm going to be running a series of 10K's, half-marathons, marathons and ultras in preparation for the London to Brighton Ultra marathon in September 2011.

So far I've completed 7 miles for sport relief, the shinfield 10K road race, the seaford half marathon and isle of wight half marathon. My next challenge is my first ever marathon, the eden project marathon in october.

My donation page can be found at http://www.justgiving.com/Liam-Chessell

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hey all i'm a new member here and i've found all the information here very good for beginner.
    About me;
My name is Marc i'm 24 and a primary school teacher, i have always had a big interest in helping young children with disabilities and spent 3 out of my 4 years at university caring for a boy with Downs Syndrome. When i watched this years marathon 2010 it inspired me to apply for a place in 2011. I applied to a charity called PhabKids who isn't a large charity but they organise days out with children with and with disabilities to try and promote inclusion and understanding.
As many of you will know you have to raise £1500 for a gold bond place and i really want to raise this ASAP so i can concentrate on my training.
This will be my first marathon and i really hope to do more in the future!
If you can donate ANYTHING i would really be grateful!
For more information about PhabKids please visit:

  • Hi there

I will be running in my first half-marathon in a few weeks time. The longest distance race I have previously completed was a 10K run nearly 20 years ago! I'm aiming for a time of around 2 hours, or just under, but primarily to finish!

I am entered in the Nottingham Robin Hood Half-Marathon and I'm raising money for the Treetops Hospice.I'd welcome sponsorship to help me reach my target of £400, and you can donate here: http://www.justgiving.com/AndrewPhillips2010

    Thanks

  • Hi

I will be running the 2011 London Marathon for the ABF - The Soldiers Charity. The charity is all about helping the brave men and women of the armed forces who put there lives on the line everyday to help us feel that little bit safer back in the UK. Unfortunately some do not make it back, the ABF strives to help the families that have suffered such a tragic loss aswell as those soldiers that come back home with severe injuries. As well as that they help train former soldiers as a way of helping them to find new work after having served our country so well.

This will be my first marathon. I was inspired by watching the 2010 VLM, and seeing a guy running it with a fridge on his back. If he can do that then i can to (without the fridge). My aim is to run it in around 3.45 but anything under 4 hours will be great.

I have setup a just giving page where you can sponsor and find more information. The company i work for will also double anything I raise which is absolutely brilliant and will help this worthwhile cause achieve more of its goals.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any donations.

  • Hi everyone,

I am running The Great South Run this year for the NSPCC - a great charity helping so many children who have had such terrible beginnings in life.

I've never run this far before (10 miles) in fact I've never run a race before but I'm very committed to doing as much as I can for such a worthy cause.

I've set up a Virgin Money Giving page and if anyone would like to sponsor me or offer some words of encouragement & advice, I would be very grateful.

    http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/LynseyFry

Thanks for your time. Wish me luck!

  • Hi

I'm running the Blackpool Half Marathon on 27 Feb 2011, the Liverpool Half Marathon on 20 March 2011, and the Great Manchester 10K Run in May 2011 all for NSPCC / CHILDLINE.

I used to volunteer as a counsellor at Childline and honestly can't tell you enough about what a fabulous service this is for children and young people in need of help. Just to have a friendly voice and someone willing to listen can make all the difference, and am doing all I can to raise funds to keep this services going.

I'm a relatively new runner (started 5 months ago) and think I may have stretched myself too far with what I want to achieve, but it will be worth it - am I'm looking forward to it.

More details can be found at www.justgiving.com/Jessica-Leech0

Congratulations to everyone who has raised money for your charities - well done!

  • In April 2011 I will be running my first ever marathon at the Virgin London Marathon in aid of the British Heart Foundation.  I have chosen to support this charity as unfortunately I lost my brother Mark to a heart attack just over 10 years ago.  Mark left behind two young sons and was only 40 years old when he died.  I hope that by raising money for this charity other families may be spared what my family has been through.

As part of my fundraising effort I am holding Black Tie Gala Dinner at the Cathedral Quarter Hotel in Derby on Saturday 13th November – as part of the evening we are holding a silent auction and are asking  companies to help us by donating something for the auction.  We have already received some generous donations such as vouchers for overnight hotel accommodation, electrical goods and sports corporate hospitality tickets and sporting memorabilia.  I hope that you may be able to help too.  Any donation is gratefully received and I am sure you agree that this is a very worthy cause.

If you would also like to attend the event, tickets are priced at £40 each, with all profits going to the BHF, and can be bought by contacting me on the details below.

I hope that you can help in helping me reach my fundraising goal of £2,000 for the British Heart Foundation

  • I've never run  before and by the end of August 2010 I couldn't even stand up let alone walk/run because I've been suffering from a form of psychosis.

    People won't talk about their own experience with mental health problems and as you'll see if you do take a look at my page even I'm quite coy about it ... so as an experiment here's the public pitch and the real story;

I'm running Edinburgh Marathon in support of the Mental Health Foundation. The MHF have invested significant amounts of time and money into researching the best ways to help people with mental illness manage their lives. One of the key strategies identified is exercise to promote mental well being.

I am running to make myself better and it's a real privilege to do something more than that too. Exercising just for my own benefit has been fantastic but doing it to help others who are suffering is just amazing. I feel less isolated and alone than I have for years because I feel all the other people who'll benefit from the MHF's work there with me as I train.

So that's the public pitch ...  I'm not particularly ashamed of the more detailed version or so fragile I can't stand to talk about it so if you want to ask a question please feel free. It's sometimes nice to be able to talk about something that has been such a big part of my life for so long, even if it hasn't always been a pleasant presence. .

Psychosis is essentially a break with reality.

The psychosis very nearly killed me over the summer as I went for 30 days on a diet of just water because I believed everything was contaminated. At the end of August I couldn't manage to walk downstairs because the muscles in my legs had wasted making it difficult to support my own (dramatically reduced) body weight. A walk from the car into the hospital for routine blood tests proved too much and I collapsed as my BP fell to 63/38 and my heart continued to beat irregularly.

Fortunately I've come through it now, but the experience has had a profound affect on me. I almost feel that I need to justify being alive. I feel like I need to do more and to be more. Complaining that I hadn't achieved anything or was worthless just wasn't good enough, I realised that if I couldn't respect myself then the solution was obvious, do something to be proud of....so here I am.

My very first run was in October, I managed half a mile with about 4 stops, from there I worked really hard and ran my first half marathon at the end of November. (It was pitifully slow at 2.20 but completed without stopping, walking or passing out!)

All the altruism aside I just love running, I've discovered that I never hallucinate when I run so it's a little piece of each day which is peaceful and safe. On days where I'm really tortured by voices and people others can't see breaking out for a run is like breathing clean air again. I'd be running even without the marathon to complete but with the marathon comes a sense of purpose and achievement.

  • Hi everyone,

on behalf of the Japanese society of the University of Leeds, 4 of us will be taking part in the Leeds Annual half-marathon, in May.
This is in order to raise funds for the people that were harmed by the earthquake, tsunami, radiation and all it's effects.

As we have all studied there for a year, and many of our friends and their families having to go through a very difficult time, we feel attached to the cause, and hope we can help just a little bit.

    you can find us here:

  • Hi all,

I'm running the Edinburgh Marathon in aid of the SSPCA who receive no govt funding and are an entirely separate entity to the RSPCA who only operate in England and Wales.

This will also be a huge achievement for me when I complete the marathon as two years ago I was paralysed from the chest down with a condition called ADEM. I have since made around a 99% recovery and only started training in September 2009 as I had been unfit to do so prior to this.

  • Hi All,

I am running the Great North Run on the 18th of September to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The foundation grants the wishes of children with life threatening and terminal illnesses, giving them and their families a welcome break.

My 6 year old daughter was lucky enough to have her wish granted in December 2010.
This has led me to take up running and participate in my first half marathon so that I can give something back to the charity and help them grant the wishes of other children.

Even if it's spare change, every little helps.
    You can donate at www.justgiving.com/paulmawson

    Many thanks,

    Paul
  • Hi all

I am running 3 races and trying to raise funds to help both
    MacMillan and CLIC Sargent charities.

I'll be running the Stowmarket Scenic 7 on the 13th Nov.
The Hadleigh 10 on the 20th Nov, and then the "big one"
Land Rover Malta Half Marathon on the 26th February.

I will most likely find 2-3 more races to take part in before the February run and hopefully continue to race funds.

I thank you most kindly for any kind of sponsorship.

  • Hi All

I shall be running the London 2 Brighton Challenge 2012 for Macmillan Cancer Support. 100km in under 24 hours. I am hoping to manage it in under 16 hours but I am a realist

Well I say running, it will probably be nearer a case of run/jog/walk and repeat until the finish as I have only really recently started running.

I chose Macmillan as my charity of choice as they have provided amazing support for 2 departed friends and I believe the world would be a worse place without them.

As to why so far. I would like to raise as much money as I can and something this epic will hopefully encourage support, and I shall need all the support and incentive I can get to finish.

Donations can be made here http://www.justgiving.com/Robins-London2Brighton and if anyone is on Facebook I have a charity page with updates here http://www.facebook.com/pages/Robins-Big-Charity-Event/147330805310866

If you do donate please could you add runners world in the comment so that I can see this is working.

If all you can do would be to 'like' these pages on Facebook and '+1' them on Google+ I would be really grateful.

    Cheers

    Robin

  • I am running for Down's Heart Group

    http://www.bit.ly/joyarnall

My daughter Hannah ( hence my user name ) is my inspiration having being born with Down's syndrome and a large hole in her heart underwent open heart surgery at 8 weeks and this group was such a support to us in our darkest days.

Please help them raise vital funds so they can support other families like us.

When we thought that our world had ended, we found that through the Down's heart group support, the door had just opened on an another exciting new world.

My daughter Hannah is now 9 years old, is in mainstream education and loved dancing, swimming and has even appeared in Eastenders, we would never have dreamed she could have had such a quality of life

Thank you Down's Heart Group for giving us hope in those early days and I hope I do you proud running this VLM to raise vital funds for you
