OK, so as this is the most helpful place on the planet i thought I'd try you out with this one...
So, I was on the 'puter this morning browsing the internet and I suddenly got this message that I had some viruses on my PC. I was invited to download a program to get rid of these only to suddenly find that I needed to pay something like $79.99 for the prviledge. The program / service appears to be called Security Tool. I didn't pay for it but it is a bit late as it now keeps coming up with messages inviting me to try to get rid of various trojans, worms etc...
The question is - how do I uninstall this thing? I can't seem to find it on the computer...
Just so that you know, I have Avast already installed.
Cheers,
RB

You need to get that malware off Rattie. It's not good news.
Removal GuideI'm not a guru by any stretch of the imagination esp re security but just did a quick search and here's one site that guides you in how to get rid of the software for free.
Cheers LN. I'll give it a whirl...
Ratbag, my pc got infected by the same damned thing about 6 months ago.
I got rid of it by downloading and running Malwarebytes anti-malware free software.
Good luck, it's a nasty virus.
Ratbag, I'm pretty sure that the message your getting is itself a mixture of virus and a con to buy software.
If when the message comes up, it starts totting up the viruses you allegedly have on your pc, as if you've run a scan disk yourself, just come out of the page.
I've had that message before, and have just deleted out of the page, and have no problems.
The scam is designed to look as if it's your own pc telling you you have big problems, but is in reality a clever programme built by those damm scammers.
Ratbag,
Most geeks would go down the road of combo-fix and malware bytes or trend housecall

SteadyState is a good idea but we have had problems with some computers booting once it has been installed, have no experience of Muttley's other suggestions. If you want to be bombproof do all your work from a cloned virtual machine - too techy to go in to detailabout this.
Phew!
I 'think' I may have got rid of it but now the PC is running unbelievably slowly. Like I can type this but it takes a minute to show on the screen. There is a process called pctsSvc.exe that seems to hog all the processor time. I managed to make it a low priority and I can at least get something done.
Any ideas now how to get the speed back to 'normal'?
Thanks....this is fecking killing me...
remove SD in Control Panel/Add or Delete Programs and it should be much better
now you've got rid of the malware it shouldn't be an issue but watch out for other ones and don't get duped - Avast should be enough if you also run Malwarebytes or CC Cleaner from time to time
I have to say that it was pretty scary...the bloody thing completely took over my PC...it wouldn't let me launch any programmes and basically made it a useless piece of junk...I am so relieved that it seems to be fixed now....you wouldn't believe how many infections I had....
The one thing I don't understand is why Avast didn't manage to stop it...as it seemed to recognise and stop it on Sunday evening...
Anyway, all is well now...thanks again all...
