  • Oooh Sheils - i had one of those runs last night too! Didn't want to go *at all* - had a really long day, felt like a wrung out dishcloth, and then my run felt really good!

OooO! When do we leave? I've got ski jacket, gloves and some fab socks somewhere.... I'm ready image (I have to be back for a trip to Dublin next week, is that ok?).

We're all going on a ski-ing holiday, no more working for a week or two......

I know! I have 4 and a bit more weeks til I get a week off image but then it's only 7 weeks til I will be heading to Mallorca for sun and cycling for a week then get home and have another week off. THEN 4 weeks til Spring bank week, then 7 weeks til Summer hols. Not THAT long really is it?! image

  • Fingers crossed Riggs!

I think they should pass a law that says it's illegal to work full time.

  • Working full time sucks. Hubby and I have worked out who is covering which school holidays (he is doing Feb, we all have a week together in April, there's various holiday clubs, family, he has a week and I have a week separately in August to cover summer, he's doing Oct, I do next Christmas - all arranged for the whole year, and I have one day spare in case the girl is ill image. So little time together as a family.

How about full time plus overtime like I have been doing last couple of weeks!

Of course in a couple of weeks we will be told no more money for overtime and we will have struggle with whatever staff we have.

Got a week off in Feb then not sure when I am off again (apart from first week in april after my week of nights) need to see the boss at work to book leave for next leave year (only booked one week off  so far)

  • Yep, school hols are a nightmare so we made the decision (being in the position to do so) that Mrs Didds works term time only, we lose some money but we don't have any alternative, non-paid support locally (i.e. grandparents) so would only end up spending the extra dosh on kids clubs etc during the hols (and I think Mrs Didds enjoys the time off).

Sheils - sounds like your fitness levels are quite good at the moment?

BB - told you you'd be sorry you asked about increasing your mileage.  I agree with Bex in that time/effort are as good a measure at this level as anything else (i.e. an extra 5 minutes sounds less difficult that saying an extra 1/2 or 1 mile.

Stu - how did you get involved in the Fell Running champs?  Will skiing hols affect your training for it?

    Morning image

6m last night, 4 at lunch today and 6 again tomorrow followed by the Parkrun on Saturday for me.  A couple of 10m (ish) runs next week and TT here I come image

  • That's a great arrangement Didds, I wish we could do that! Neither of our jobs would allow it, unfortunately.

For summer so far I have farmed the kid out to my sister for a week (over 100 miles away), got 2 weeks covered by me or hubby, which leaves 3 weeks which I'll probably split between the childminder and Kings Camp. Costs a flippin fortune, King's is about £149 a week, childminder is £18 a day.  And we'll need a week of childcare at Easter, and another for summer half term. I try not to think about how much that costs!

I keep trying to convince my parents that they want to move 'Oop North when they retire! Think of the money I'd save!!

Increasing mileage - I have a vague plan which is a bit like Becky suggested, keeping week day runs between 3 and 6 ish miles, and increasing my long run at at the weekend slowly, with a cut back every 4th week. I don't have time to run more in the week anyway, the 6 miles is optimistic (and as yet untried lol).

    Swimming tonight though! image

  • Ooh get in Dids! Looks like a fair few folk are doing TT? I'm undecided - free that day, but even though I enjoyed it last year, I'm not really keen on the terrain. I may cycle out - see you all off - whizz up to Tigger Tor - make rude comments as you all puff your way to the top - cycle back down and join you all for a  beer image. Though I will have to get a run in that day so it'll be an early start!

Stu (Accelerate) advocates training by time - I agree it makes sense - I just don't do it image.

  • Can see the sense of training by time rather than distance especially when recovering from injury but I still like to now how far I have run.

We are quite lucky now with the school holidays because the eldest tends to be home from uni for the big ones and the middle one (16yrs) can watch youngest (8yrs) at half term etc if we are working.

Working shifts means I can try and be at home for some time during the week but that means working the weekend plus I will be doing long days(0715 - 2030) by easter hols so will have 4 days a week off (if not on nights). Mrs Riggsy has some element of flexi time as well. For the long summer holidays I try and get a week of nights then get seven days off and book a weeks leave for a trip to the seaside. Mrs Riggsy then tries to book her holidays accordingly to cover some of the holidays to let the big uns have some time.

Mozzy doesn't first one back to the Rugby Club have to get the beers in!

  • BB - lots of good advice for you to digest. btw bear in mind that Moz was injured and out of all events up until the Olympics. She then sought advice of RW`s sages who said steer clear of intervals so she then did a 12 mile fast run including 12 x 1k intervals @ 3 mins per km, or something, thereby risking her legs actually falling off.

Good training Didds! Hope you can show me a few good runs in t`peaks later in the year. Please!

GI - Hope the brother is ok, as can be. Would like to meet up for speed session sometime but will probs be later in the year realistically.
  • Moz - I had a vague plan of cycling by the Tigger Tor route and offering encouragment so I might see you there (as you run past).

  • ET - you clearly know me so well!!!

As does Baz. If I cycle to tha start I'll see everyone lining up - lob me bike ver a hedge and join in (with me cleats on)

Riggs - no - the first one back gets to cheer/take the piss out of everyone else coming in and direct the last one home to the bar to pay penance! It was Cack last year - pre IM training - escorted off the course by the marshals - top effort!

    Best get training then image
  • Omg. I`ve just realised that the TT goes from Tigers ground which has Thornbridge beer! Shame you need first aid kit, compass, tent, canoe , etc to do it. Arse!

Just had bad news. Think I`ve lost one of my best lads. Disappeared. Pretty fuckin hopeless this job sometimes.

    Moz - you doing Bosa?
  • GIRO - hows the BiL?  Hope it wasn't his important wrist that broke?image

Baz/Moz - I really enjoyed watching the run from Higger Tor last year, but it was absolutely freezing just stood there (may not be as cold this year), though my shouts of support seemed unappreciated at the time (especially given Sheila's expression and Baz wasn't much better). image - I'm sure they were appreciated.

Len - yes, we're lucky in respect that we can do the Term Time working.

  • LOL! I love this forum! image

ET - yeah hoping to do Bosa. Leg fine today - swim later to keep it rested then 12 miler at a bit of a push tomorrow I  think. If that goes well I'll be there on Sunday image. Though London is my priority so treating it as a  tempo run.

Revised VLM targets: a) get to the start line un-injured, fit to race and get in sub 3.25 (nearer to 3.20 would be amazing) b) get to the sart line un-injured, fit to race and nobble a PB (even if only by a second) c) get to the start line un-injured, fit to race and get a qulifying time so that I can at some point make a sub 3.15 bid.

Can anyone give me a route description?

Can dig out my Garmin route from last year if I can work out how to remove the splits from it.

  • Didds, Bil ok. He is in for an op today on wrist. Also broken his bone vertically just under his knee which also requires op. Will need a couple of weeks recovery and approx 6 month of physio. Lucky really because it could have been a lot worse. Did i mention his other half is 8 1/2 months pregnant and in slow labour.

Mozzy/Baz, i may have a ride over to watch TT, if you can cope with a slow coach peddling behind you.
  • Haile/Baz - I think Baz sent out a map my run link last year?

Also - somewhere in a pile of papers I have a printed off route I think - but I may have binned it. If I can find it I'll phot ocopy it and give Sheils a couple of copies.

Or just follow the club vests!

  • Tigger Tor route (hopefully)

Not sure what the black circles are near the start. I'm going to see if I can get it in to Bing maps as you can get an OS view on there so you'll get a better idea of where it goes in relation to footpaths/bridleways.

Ooh forgot to mention, me n Haile are going to this SHAFF expert night- Running if anyone fancies it. Friday 11th Feb at the Showroom

  • Afternoon.

ET - you have lost one and I am gaining one! Not even been to visit the school and wanted her to start today! She's been to visit today and starts on Friday.

PPA this afternoon.....so I'm heading out on my bike image then a run. Wise use of time I think!!

Feel better for getting a bit of sleep last night. I am still tired though so early night tonight and hopefully more sleep and I should be getting back on track.
  • Glad you got a bit of sleep last night Aitch! image

Sheils - looks interesting, would have fancied it but gonna be up in the Cairn Gorms.

Dids - the champs races are open races but you usually need to enter in advance as so many people want to do them. That's one of the great things about fell running, anyone can rock up and compete along side the best the country has too offer. Skiing hopefully won't set me back too much, let's just call it cross training! Will have 5 weeks to build up to it when I get back so should be ok.

Look forward to hearing all the TT race / support reports in a few weeks, should be a good day!
  • Afternoon

Just over ten miles done on a lovely sunny, muddy pit top. Did 3 loops of the circuit I do so that meant 3 steep medium climbs and 3 short steep climbs plus a gentle climb back up from the pit. Ran at what felt a comfortable pace without pushing or slowing down. Took 1:24:10 for the ten miles, last bit after the ten I slowed down to a walk to cool down. Went through 6 miles quicker today than I did 6 miles last night.

Tigger Tor here I come imageimage

Speaking of which here is a link to an interactive map of the course from the Totley AC website

Tigger Tor interactive map doesn't show best routes etc just checkpoints

  • Afternoon all! image

Glad you had a good night's sleep at long last, Aitch! image

Nice running from a few folks on here! image

    I'm still ill. image

This cold/virus/whatever seems to be showing no signs of going away - still got chesty cough and runny nose, woke up with headache and have just got horribly feverish from having a quick walk over lunchtime to get some fresh air.  I actually had to ask my colleagues afterwards whether it was hot or cold today, because I can't really tell.  Apparently it is cold, despite me having to remove earmuffs and gloves and unzip my coat on the way round (I'm normally pretty nesh).

Starting to wonder whether I've been inadvertently coming to work with swine flu, although I think I might have felt even more ill if that was the case.  Did feel absolutely shocking all of last weekend (I certainly wouldn't have come to work if those had been weekdays) but maybe I'm over the worst of it.

I'm currently procrastinating over making a load of phone calls, as I know they'll probably descend into coughing fits/sore throat...

Run tomorrow looks increasingly unlikely. image

parkrun Saturday - not sure yet...

    LSR Sunday - who knows....?

    image

  • LP image

GIRO - I bet you're popular at the moment image

Haile - its all part of a cunning plan, especially as I haven't ran over 6m since November.  My lasy long run would be on Wednesday so plently of time to recover before Sunday and would benefit more from the confidence of a couple of 10m runs than not.

4m done at lunch in just over 36m - so slightly faster than last week.
