can't open any programmers bar internet explorer

had a pop up saying about malware...but it seemed to be nicely put in the virus vault.
Now I've returned to the laptop, and can't open any programmes apart from internet explorer....seems to be all files with .exe.
Says I need to open all the normal shortcuts with another programme...which never usually happens. Can't even open my AVG to check for viruses.
Had a few looks round online, but nothing seems to be something a non technical type like me could do easily!
Any ideas greatly received!

Are you able to boot it into safe mode?
ta squeakz....safe mode...but couldn't do anything there.
system restore...took ages...but worked...did the AVG...all fine on the western front.
it's as we were!!
1) Fist thing as you can state you can run internet explorer is to do a virus check, try an online virus checker such as house call

I think avast home which is also free is a vastly superior product
a few people i know hate AVG too Squeakz...must admit it normally does a decent job, but all i usually look at on the net is football and running stuff.
What did it today was watching some live football feed. I suppose they can be dodgy as anyone can put one up
