Bad back

Hi all. Need some advice please. Whilst leaping gazelle-like over a swollen beck yesterday, I landed funny and hurt my lower back. I felt as if it compressed somehow and it was immediately painful. It was certainly a jarring type of injury. I completed the race and as the race wore on, my back became less painful and more free. It was fairly uncomfortable for the rest of the day however.

When I woke this morning, I could hardly get out of bed and unless I keep moving about, it seems to stiffen anew.

I suspect, if I run, like yesterday, the stiffness should ease but my question is, would I be silly to do this or should I give my back a complete rest?

Needless to say, I'm feeling pretty miserable today so any help would be much appreciated.

Chimp - I done my back in whilst on holiday last month – when I came home I went to see a sports therapist / osteopath – I went in; in agony and came out pain free and was able too ease back into my training the next day

It cost me £25 but was worth every penny

Get this checked out by a medic. See my post on Cougies busted leg. I spent 6 weeks shuttling around with what I thought was a "pull" - turned out to be a chipped vertebra.

WW, do you know how to locate a sports therapist/osteopath? Is there a web-site or anything? Can you simply make an appointment or do you have to be referred by a GP?

You only need ring the clinic to make an appointment – the best way to find a good clinic is through recommendations but you can search on-line database such as the one at:

    http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/clinics/indextherapist.php

    Or

    http://www.yell.co.uk

PS check out there qualifications before committing yourself - they should be able to give details over the phone of qualifications and governing body organisations they are members of

If it doesnt get much better I'll probably do that. Simon Frost. Unfortunately, it is virtually impossible to get a dodctor's appointment before 10.00 or after 4.00 where I live.

Anyone know of a good sports therapist/osteopath in Leeds/Pudsey area?

Chimp, it's worth going private if you can afford it as it's a lot quicker usually. I had good experience with an osteopath once, perhaps I should rephrase that, I found osteopathy to be very effective for back pain.

Local club might be able to recommend, or specialist running shop might have notice board with adverts.

    Good luck.

    Chimp -
get to a physio or other therapist

try some ice in the meantime and if you can manage - keep mobile - but dont do any hurdling !

you can also try some gentle stretching excercises - but physio is the best starting point- Chartered physio though

Thanks Bune. I'm feeling that fed up I cant even be bothered to make the obvious leg-over riposte to your advice not to hurdle!!

I need to sort it though. Its getting worse as the day wears on.

chimp - take yourself off to a specialist just as soon as you can. I was laid up (no funnies please!) at the beginning of the year and it was no picnic. I spend 8 hours a day in front of a pc at work, first thing my doc did was put me on rest for a week. I had an injection in my back, and then 10 sessions of exercise therapy (every 2nd day). I'm under strict instructions to get up and stretch at least 5 mins every hour, and to continue the exercise routine I was given. So far it works - but when it happened I thought I was dying, the pain was so bad. So you have my sympathy - but please don't leave it too long to get treated.

Cheers Ironwolf. Like you, I spend much of the day sitting down and its when I get up from my chair that it gets me. I'm going to the club tonight to see if anyone knows of a good osteopath? Chiropractor? but I will go to docs if its no better by tomorrow evening.

(Feel bad about being nasty about about Herod and Tyson now.-shame-faced chimp)

Hi everyone. No better I'm afraid. My query now is whether I should see an osteopath or a chiropractor.

Looked at sportsinjury clinics (thanks WildWill) but there's not one near either where I live or where I work. So I'm now ploughing through Yellow Pages.

BTW, anyone know what qualifications I should be looking for.

Finally, long shot I know, but any recommendations in Leeds area.

    Cheers peeps.

I did my back a couple of years ago playing football, and at that time was in complete pain, but the local gym i went to had plenty of details on sports therpists I belive you have the same gym in Leeds it's called Fitness First, the folks in the Coventry branch were great and gave me a contact number, you may even find they have someone there that can help you. good luck and keep your chin up

there's a BUPA wellness centre in Leeds, who do promote an extensive musculoskeletal/sports service - might expect the people there to be appropriately qualified /experienced but no direct experience myself 0800 616 029 - might be more expensive but physio prices should be fairly uniform(?)

also like PJ was about to suggest trying one of the larger gyms eg David LLoyd Tennis Centre (?Moortown), Virgin (?city Centre) or (JJB Birstall) - again these are likely to employ/work with physios etc with the right experience

Tip to any keen sportsman currently in good health and in employment - Join BUPA (or whowever) now! ...er sad but true

We have BUPA at work - but the way it works is you have to be refererd by you Doc to be able to claim back the dosh

chimp - you're forgiven, but remember it's not Herod and Tyson - it's Shani and Oz. And Shani deserves your sympathy too, I've just returned from a very long evening at the vet surgical clinic where she underwent a 1 1/2 hour op for torn tendons and cartilage in her left knee. Same as the football injury some guys get.

    Poor thing. :-(

How is she (Shani is a she isnt she?) this morning??
