Pain on top of foot - no redness or visible bruise, but a bit of swelling the size of a 10p coin. probably due to iether (or both) tight shoe laces and running a lot on hard off-road surfaces.
Self diagnosed it as inflamation of the extensor hallucis brevis muscle (used in pulling the big toe up).
I could run if I tied my laces differently, but don't want to aggrevate it. need it sorting as quickly as possible.
Anyone else had it and how long did it take to heal?

Hi dibbers,
Just a quick question - how do you know it's the Extensor Hallucis Brevis and not the Extensor Hallucis Longus?
Kind regards,
Ablefeet
Because it's right where this image shows it http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.ptlocker.com/images/muscles/extensor-hallucis-brevis.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.ptlocker.com/anatomy.php?mode=view&id=32&sid=77dfc5e2d9e133a6a8b58a51fce2a791&h=441&w=294&sz=45&tbnid=fo0em8NC6pJIxM:&tbnh=127&tbnw=85&prev=/search?q=Extensor+Hallucis+Brevis&tbm=isch&tbo=u&zoom=1&q=Extensor+Hallucis+Brevis&usg=__WceQVXIrLtrldJjmsyWNU4gJZng=&sa=X&ei=iQ8LTpb9BNCyhAe4jY3wDw&ved=0CCwQ9QEwAw
That's Ok then....
(Wonders why people go to Uni for years to become Doctors ? You could just rely on google)
Dave - I couldn't agree more.
dibbers - I was simply trying to help. Aren't you assuming that there's no other structrures in this area (which there are several - I could list them all if you want). If you've self diagnosed your problem, why do you need anyones help - surely you can self diagnose your treatment plan and rehabilitation programme.
Kind regards

No offence was taken, even with your sarcy comment. You're point was quite right, and I agree really. My query was more about how long it could take to heal, if anyone else had had similar. Whether I'm right or wrong about the exact muscle is not too important -it's imflamed (slight spongy lump on top of foot which moves when I pull my big toe up)
Hi dibbers,
Sarcasm - the lowest form of wit - brilliant isn't it!
Enough of that and down to the problem.
Where exactly is the pain and when do you now get it on a daily basis?
Have you recently changed your training programme/regime or your footwear?
Those for starters...
Kind regards,
Ablefeet
OK. I have been doing a lot of off-road running, and the ground is very hard at the moment. It's possible one or both of these has caused inflamation to the top of my foot. I have a spongy lump on the top of my foot(area of 2nd lacing point and in the middle) the size of a 10p coin which appears as I point my big toe downwards. It's in the position of the muscle shown on that illustration at the top of this thread. (IMO;-) )
It only really bothers me when my footwear rubs ontop of my foot, worse when I run. if I walk around and even run barefoot in the house for example, it's OK.
I've done no running for 12 days and tried 30 mins on tready yesterday without too much after affects.
Like with most niggles/injuries, is it OK to continue running but control it as much as possible (loose laces, not so long distances) etc, or completely rest and allow it to heal 100% ?
