Best of luck with the recovery Paddy.. Good health...
• PADDY - yeah, best wishes for the recovery...& do check in & gift us some training advice now & again...image

...in two minds whether to do the Clontarf Half on Sunday morning...apparently limited registration will be available up to tomorrow evening - 30euros to run my training route...don't know if it makes sense!

A.W.

All depends if you like to do a 'time' image. I did my half last week in ~1:46.. There is not a "hope in hell" I could do that in training. image.

But then it's local for you. Al least I saw some new scenary.. Nah give it a miss... Plently other half's around the place.

Or not pay and run anyway (just get slightly diverted with 100m to go)

• MAN DOWN!

Finbarr/Paddy - yeah, never did that half-mara (they got near-perfect weather conditions for it)...did some 800m intervals on Sunday evening instead...nothing to serious (no dramatic jump in duration or intensity etc...all quite modest really)...felt fine afterwards...woke up on Monday morning with a stinging sensation/discomfort (not pain) in the left hip area...it was there all day...foolishly I reckoned that maybe if I went for a jog, I'd loosen it out...could only manage two very slow kms...no realy pain...more an ache...long story short, I'm walking with a bit of limp now...apllied deep heat etc, tried ice...any advice/ideas would be much appreciated!

None unfornutnately from me.. I'm the worst ever for seeking / getting medical advice. I know I need to see somebody myself and I will not. Just waiting for it to heal on it's own accord....
• Hi all,

Sorry to hear all the injury woes on here. I hope you have a speedy recovery Paddy. Adog, sorry to hear about your hip. I haven't got any experience with hip injuries I'm afraid. I'd say just say rest it for a bit and if it persists see a specialist. How's your swimming - no impact but might help loosen it a bit? It was a cycling sportive for me at the weekend, it was my first proper one. It was very hilly, but enjoyable. Got a local 10K race tonight.

• Adog - My problems started with hip area pain/ ache. I'm no doctor but it could be something t do with the Sciatic nerve or piriformis.

How is it now - did it clear or is it still hanging around? If it is get it checked out. Go to a sports massage therapist - i find this approach better as a doctor will just tell you to rest (it may need rest but at least you'l have a better idea of what the problem is!. I'm still swimming instead of running - i'm going to be patient for a change!.

• Yeah Paddy, it has subsided but it's still hanging around in that I'm constantly aware of that area's presence if that makes sense...I can walk without the limp now but the hip area is whispering to me not to forget it...yeah, I'll see what happens today/tomorrow...hope the swimming is going well! yeah, I'll prob hit the pool myself if this goes on...

not running really affecting my mood image - I'm grumpy as hell...just looking for half an excuse to fight with everyone...

KP - how did the 10k go?

Finbarr - what's your injury woe?

• Finbarr65Finbarr65 ✭✭✭

Adog,

Nothing serious for me...

I get a stiffness in the back of the knee when I'm sitting for a period of time. When I stand and move it takes a few minutes for the knee to "free up". Doesn't effect my running. It's been like that for a few months now. I should really ask somebody about it..

/John

• Hi All,

Adog, hope your hip problem clears soon. I know the feeling of frustration though, I'm very grouchy if I don't get to train. The race was good. It's quite a hilly race so it's a good challenge. It rained too, which is my favourite running weather, especially in summer, helps keep me cool. I was 30 seconds quicker than last year so at least there was some improvement as well. It made a nice change to the usual track session.

Finbarr, I had a problem like that with my left knee at the start of the year, it was particularly painful when I was driving or if I sat down for a long time, but within a few minutes of walking the pain went. It was a really sharp pain that felt like it was quite deep inside the knee. It persisted for about 6 weeks, then just as I was starting to worry about it, the pain just disappeared. I haven't had any problems with it since (touch wood), bit of a mystery really.

Hi all, I'm signed up to Dublin, which'll be my first marathon! I'm not much of a runner, more into my hockey, but I'm looking forward to the challenge and I'm actually beginning to enjoy the training runs. Dreading the day when I'll have to go for a 20-mile run straight after match day though... Any other first timers out there?

Hi October,

Dublin is my first marathon too! I am reasonably fit but have never run competitively or long distance.

How is your training going?

To the rest of you seasoned marathoners.......looking forward to hearing how its done image and I hope those who are injured are on the mend.

Ellie

• I definitely recommend Dublin. My time there was half an hour quicker than my London time 18 months later, mostly down to the nasty heat in April compared to the cool loveliness of Dublin in October.

I stayed out in Ballsbridge at one of the D4 hotels and walked to the start line - it's about 25 mins walk which I found perfect for getting hydrated and warming up the muscles.

The whole thing was really well organised. One of the best things I did was meet up with the Dublin hash the day before for an easy run round the town and also going for a nice Italian with them them that evening. I haven't read this whole thread but I suspect Liam from the hash will be on here at some point if not already to invite people to join them before this year's race.

• Adog/ Fin - Any injury updates??

Hi Paddy,

I grand. Got out for a 13 miler yesterday with the Waterford club... Took it handish and popped around in 1:57.. I'm up around 35 miles a week at the moment. Probably hit 40 but not much more. Don't think I bother with going for another sub 4. Done it in '09 so happy enough with the one effort.

Hi Ms Jelly.. That was a good night alright in the Italian restaurant the night before the '09 run. Hopefully something similar happens this year..

For the new people remember Long Slow Runs are the key. LSR's should be approx 90 seconds slower than your expected marathon pace..

John

• Hey Paddy,

Yeah, I was pretty bad for a few days there..but it's been easing (slowly)...obviously haven't been doing any running...was doing some long walks, but no other training - so prob lost a lot of aerobic fitness (ie more than two weeks of no exercise) which is a real pain as I reckon I had moved up a zone or two...but hey, that's the way it goes I suppose...

DM is 15 weeks away today...by next week, I reckon I'll be able to hit the rower...have a dream that I'll be able to use the rower for two weeks to regain some strength (ie weeks 14 & 13) & then (fingers crossed) be back on the running trail commencing week 12...

& then ease back to the running keeping the rower up in tandem & maybe, just maybe, be able to still enter DM just for enjoyment & as a springboard to a spring marathon (maybe Barcelona)...

I just so love the DM that even if I were to jog it, I'd be happy...last year's pb is defo out the window...

how are you doing? spending much time in the pool? any start date fora return to running on the horizon?

Fin,

good to see you're back on the road...

• Adog - I have been Swimming and Cycling. I've had a 5 mile and a six mile run so far. I'm hoping to ease back in over the next few Weeks. Still not doing Dublin this year though. London is possible. Hope you recover well!!
• 14 weeks to go.

Went out for as few drinks Friday before last. Got up in middle of night to use the loo. Pulled a . muscle in my calf and fell over catching my back on door handle.image

Fell over another four times and had to crawl back into bed.image

Had to miss my long run planned for the Sunday. Thankfully my leg recovered quickly and managed 25 miles of road running and over 2 hours of cross training in the gym last week.

I won't be drinking for a while though. My back still hurts a bit but it could have been so much worse.

I'm nearly 44. I think I need to grow up.image

Good luck everyone with your training. To those who have to miss out this time any advice will be greatly appreciated.

• Just back from a 5 Week Holiday in South of France (What recession in Irelandimage) - I only managed about 20 miles a week with a maximum distance of 4.5 miles during that time so I was quite pleased to knock up 5 miles, 6 miles, and 12.5 miles (2:05:53) in the last 3 days and what I thought was a steady LSR pace was the same time as my halfway pace in the Barcelona Marathon in March. 4:30 last year in Dublin would love to do 3:59:59 but I think that is a step too far at 51 and 16 stone but we can dream. I am doing the Longford Half in 4 weeks and going to try for 2:00 and then try a sub 2.00 in Dublin 4 weeks later and then try to improve on my 3:17 in the Athlone 3/4 last year - Then I will decide if I gamble and go with the 4 hour pacers who are always excellent in Dublin.
• Also training for the DM.

Had a hip problem of my own come on a couple of weeks back. A deep ache, in the joint. It would feel fine, loosen up, when I got into my stride, but at the start of any run it made me limp. It also was especially bad when I got up in the morning, or if I'd been sat for any length of time.

I rested it for a week, then started building onto it again. It's getting better progressively. Still get some moments of ache, the odd twinge, the odd limp, but definitely improving. Hope it improves for you too Adog.

• Hi Ellie!

What made you sign up to the marathon? How far has your longest run been?

I haven't got a fixed training schedule, it's difficult with other commitments, but I'm stepping up the mileage now. Ran an organized half marathon a few weekends ago and around the same distance in training on Sunday morning. Ticking over during the week as often as I can with 4-6 mile runs.
• Hey David, Yeah, the old hip problems are a real pain - I will not have run for five weeks come this weekend - a lot of fitness lost (ouch); mine was very bad at one point, but it feels back to 'normal' now. I'm going to try a run on Monday (12 weeks out from the Dublin Marathon); I'll decide then if it's a viable option to take part...otherwise I'll just knuckle down for a slow, long camaign to Barcelona at the end of March...don't do anything risky yourself! I've heard some nasty stories about exploding hips....

Soon

• David Craven 2,

The hip problem is more than likely caused by your running style. i.e. Heal strike first landing and possible with a very straight leg. This causes a lot of force to go straight up the leg and into the hip.

I had the same problem myself for a long time. My hips were in bits after long runs image

A running coach quickly identified the problem. It took a while to change my running style (things of getting the toes down first). I still go back to the old style at times e.g. if I feel jadded during a long run. In general I do not have the hip problems any more.

John

• Exploding hips! Is that a joke? Spoke to my siter-in-law, a physio, and she'd never heard anything like that.

Cheers for the advice Finbarr, I've considered that as a possibility. When I've had gait analysis done my style seems pretty classic, but in still photos I reckon I am running with quite a straight leg on the landing.

• Hiya all,

popping back into this thread after a posting break.

Am also prepping for Dublin this year, and looking forward to it.
Training going well so far, touch wood no injuries, so hope to do it justice this year. Last year I overtrained, got injuried, and while I just about got around, I really should have given it a miss. So am hoping this year that I can train a little smarter.

Looking forward to a half marathon in a few weeks just to test the pace and see if my training is going as well as it seems image

hope everyone's training is going well,
Martin
• - was just being a bit dramatic what with the exploding hips phrase! but at one point mine did feel as if it were exploding...

ventured out on Sunday for a very gentle 10k - this was the inaugural comeback run...it went well...no symptoms either on the day or the following day...

ventured out last night for a gentle 14k...so far no after effects...

felt so good to feel that endorphin kick again! been buzzing all day! feels like I've overdosed on a whole pile of happy pills or something...

aerobic fitness has naturally significantly declined...

I'll see how it goes, but maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to do enough prep to show up for a respectable enough performance on Bank Holiday Monday ...

how you doing now David?

you raking up the kms Finbarr?

what's your ball park target time Irish Martin?

just under a dozen weeks now, isn't it?

• @adog, it's good when a run goes well, some days it's a struggle, other days you just glide.

I'm currently following a training plan for sub 3.30, and will see how that goes. (with 10k/hm pbs of 45/1.42 I'm don't think it's too much out of range, and I'm on week 5 of 16 now with no issues so far.

The next few weeks will be a decider though, when the LSR's ramp up in distance, 15/18/20 over the next few sundays as is was at this time last year that I picked up an injury. But hopefully this year by being a bit more lsow and steady, I'll be able to up the distance with another injury.

just under 12 weeks to go now, less than three months!

Martin

• October,

I'm running the marathon for a local charity. Its always been on my to-do list but I kind of pictured doing the 10k, HM route first. However, my little sister signed up with the charity then, after the first meeting called me to say they still had places and would I do it too? No way I could watch my little sister do something I've always aspired to do knowing I could have done it as well!

I ran 10 miles this morning after 2 weeks holiday.......its definitely the furthest I've ever ran I t was fine though. I'm quite enjoying building my running fitness up, and I'm not too fussed on speed. Once the marathon is over I'll go back to plan A and enter some 10ks and work on my pace. Or I might decide I hate running and never do it again!!

How did your HM go?

• Adog,

My LSR's were 15-15-16 for the last three weeks. The National Half is coming up in Waterford in early Sept and I want to do that (thinking about a PB effort).

I went to a Physio in Blackrock to see about my dodgy knee that is annoying me for the last 2/3 months. Seems there is some damage in the knee from my skiing accident last year that didn't heal right. I'll have to go see a Surgen with a view to getting a scan and a possible clean/tidy up of the cartridge. Physico told me what damage there is is already done image so he is leaving it with me to continue running or not imageimage What a decision image

I haven't ran in the last week and off to Poland hiking on Sunday. so I'll be away from running for 2-3 weeks. Will decide then what to do.

John

• Finbarr, hope the hiking in Poland going well; after 2-3 weeks off running, you'll have to polish (ha,ha) pretty quickly for the DCM.

Very quiet on here compared to previous two years.

Did 24kms yesterday, with 8k splits of 42m, 38m & 39m...happy that I'm recovering well after five weeks off...

hope to give this a go now once the old hip doesn't play up again...

IrishMartin, anything to report your end...

less than ten weeks to go...phew
